In detail: do-it-yourself Mercedes 210 steering rack repair from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.

I had the misfortune to carry out the procedure for replacing my knocking rack with a "restored" one from the above mentioned person. I lured the issue price: 200 USD + my rake in offset + 30 c.u. installation (against 300 ... 350 USD for a used rail) and the idea that the rail was sorted out and its residual resource is higher than that of a used one.

After installation, everything seemed to be fine; but after a week, light knocks were felt in the steering wheel. Moreover, after a long stop, especially in cool and damp weather, there are no knocks in the first hours of movement. But as soon as the car "disperses" the knocks appear again.
Thinking that most likely it was a suspension, I checked with our common masters ... and they didn’t find anything on the suspension.

I drove up to the person who installed this rail for me - he firmly believes in the infallibility of his own work and talks about gears, about how all this should work correctly, etc. ... at the same time, he also invited a specialist who had once been trained by the officials (on Hoffman, it seems) and, having checked the suspension together with him, they also did not find anything ...

Now I drive and wait for this knock to come out - I hope that this will happen before the 3-month warranty on the rail expires.

So replacing the rail with a restored one is a very controversial event. I recommend you think twice...

At its core, a Mercedes steering rack is a mechanical device that transmits power from the steering wheel to the turning mechanisms of the car's wheels. Thanks to this, the wheels turn in the direction necessary for the driver.

A seemingly simple design consists of many details, the operation of which is not so easy to figure out. The Mercedes 210 steering rack - a system of springs with rods and tips - is not at all the simplest structural element of a vehicle.

The loss of responsiveness and information content of the steering may indicate the first signs of a malfunction and that the Mercedes 210 steering rack needs repair.

There are a number of other signs by which you can determine the malfunction.Usually, such breakdowns reveal themselves when driving on rough roads, or when cornering. Then you can feel the play in the steering wheel, or a knock that gives into the hands of the driver.

In order to continue to feel comfortable driving your car, you must immediately contact a car service. Experienced professionals will deal with this problem and help fix the breakdown.

The reliability of a car is determined not only by its technical characteristics, but also by how it is maintained by its owner. Mercedes w210 steering rack repair may be required not only because of careless driving or any other similar situation, but also because some parts have worn out and need to be replaced.

Of course, most often the Mercedes 210 steering rack suffers from increased loads during intensive maneuvering and driving on our often uneven roads, or when accidentally hitting an obstacle.

In order for this mechanism to last longer, you must drive your vehicle carefully and perform regular maintenance.

The first step in the repair of any complexity is the correct diagnosis of the breakdown. In order to do this on your own, you will need a fairly voluminous baggage of knowledge and skills.

The car service always has the necessary tools and special equipment for diagnosing and testing both individual parts and the entire mechanism.

After the diagnosis, a decision is already made on which parts are to be replaced and which repair kit is needed in this case. And, sometimes, the Mercedes 210 steering rack requires a complete replacement with a new one.

The steering rack adjustment of the Mercedes-Benz w210 must be carried out at regular intervals. Do not wait until the first signs of a malfunction begin to show themselves. It is best to do this in the off-season, or when necessary.

The w210 steering rack is a reliable element of the car, but discord and breakdowns are not alien to it. The car service will be able to help establish the normal operation of the steering unit and adjust to the desired parameters.

An experienced master from a car service, using the available equipment, will be able to quickly perform all the necessary work and return an already working mechanism.

The Mercedes W210 is driven by a special mechanism - the steering rack. This device provides simultaneous turning of the front wheels of the car with the steering wheel.

Failure of this mechanism can lead to an emergency on the road.

Of course, you can prevent many problems, but on condition that you pass scheduled checks at the service station on time, or contact experienced craftsmen at the slightest deviation in the operation of the car. But there are a number of breakdowns, the occurrence of which cannot be predicted. In particular, we are talking about malfunctions of the steering rack and its entire system.

The automotive industry is so arranged that from time to time many parts have to be bought again. It is unprofitable for manufacturers to create perfect cars that never break down. In the event of a breakdown, you can contact our workshop, where professionals will undertake the repair of your car. Image - Do-it-yourself Mercedes 210 steering rack repair

So, the Mercedes 210 steering rack, like many other parts of the car, tends to break. What could be the reason for the breakdown of this mechanism:

  • Wear of the teeth in the connection between the gear and the gear base of the device. This part is the most loaded, respectively, and mainly breakdowns occur here. As a rule, most of the defects that cause tooth wear can be eliminated by adjusting the nut;
  • Mechanical deformation of the teeth in the mount between the gear base of the rack and pinion. In this case, it is necessary to replace the rack or gear;
  • The tie rod end is deformed or worn. In the event of such a malfunction, a detail will be required.

As a rule, all these details are checked during the passage of scheduled inspections. If you suddenly have a breakdown associated with the above reasons, then you can contact us for help.

How long it will last and how soon it will be necessary to repair the Mercedes 210 steering rack depends directly on the quality of the roads you drive on. As you know, there are big problems with the road surface in our country. With frequent driving on poor-quality roads, the car may experience a breakdown associated with the steering, which can be identified by the following signs:
  • The formation of a specific knock heard when driving through the pits. When turned to the side, the sound is muffled or disappears altogether;
  • When turning in different directions, the steering force decreases;
  • The force on the steering wheel disappears after returning to its original position;
  • When the car exits the turn, the steering wheel does not return to its normal position;
  • The angle of the steering wheel is different from the angle of rotation of the wheels;
  • With a slight turn of the steering wheel, the car begins to throw from side to side;
  • The drop in the liquid level in the tank for no reason.

Depending on the cause of the breakdown, our masters will carry out a number of necessary repairs. So, if you have no effort on the steering wheel when cornering, then this may indicate that:

  • There is not enough liquid in the tank;
  • The working parts of the pump are worn out;
  • The belt is worn out;
  • Weak belt tension.

Having identified the exact cause of the problem, they eliminate it by adding fluid (if necessary), replacing the belt, installing a new pump, or, if possible, repairing the old one.

In the event that your car has a different wheel angle than the steering wheel angle, this may be a sign that either the W210 steering rack is not adjusted correctly, or the shaft crosses are worn, or some parts of the chassis are worn, or the distributor torsion shaft is damaged.

By contacting us with these problems, you can be sure that our masters will quickly and efficiently perform all the necessary repairs.

If you lose effort on the steering wheel in the initial position, then this indicates that the breakdown lies in the annular wear in the body of the power cylinder. In this case, it is necessary to replace the old rail, since there is no point in repairing it. You will also have to buy a new steering gear with annular wear in the distribution part.

If a specific creak is heard during the operation of the car on an uneven road, then this indicates a breakdown, which lies in the deformation of the transverse shaft.

The reasons for the appearance of extraneous sounds may be as follows: the tank filter is clogged, the liquid level is low, the pressure in the system has dropped, the functionality of the pump has deteriorated, the hoses have deformed.

To fix the problem, our workers will replace the tank, add or replace fluid, replace the pump and hoses; eliminate the causes of fluid leakage; replace seals and other parts.

After you have brought the car to us, the master:
  • Carry out an inspection of the steering system of the car;
  • Carry out the dismantling of the steering rack;
  • Determine what the breakdown is and how much it will cost to repair;
  • Troubleshoot;
  • Carry out the installation of the steering rack;
  • Check system functionality.
