Peugeot 407 2004, petrol engine 2.0 l., 143 hp sec., front-wheel drive, automatic transmission - DIY repair
Is the sleeping bag being pushed up?
So your liquid was running away?
I bought a kit for renovation.
Need a gland size! could not create intrigue and write the size right away.
I don’t remember but where I wrote it down I lost a piece of paper. so take off the size with a barbell in place
Useful article. I just need it, because the same sore got out and it is necessary to eliminate it. I would be grateful for the size and brand of the oil seals.
I recommend that the dimensions be taken based on the removed oil seals, taking into account the grinding of the shaft thickness by 1 mm. It will take no more than a day to search the shops.
The model of the French company Peugeot, indexed 407, was first presented to the public in the spring of 2004. The developers used PSA as a modular platform, which already guaranteed the success of the model by default. These cars are distinguished by their reliability and working capacity, but, like any other technique, the Peugeot 407 often has problems. As experts note, most often they are associated with breakdowns of the steering rack (hereinafter PP), which wears out quickly due to poor-quality roads and improper care.A steering rack or gearbox is a power unit of a car, the main task of which is to transfer the driver's efforts directly to the wheels. How does all this happen? The driver acts on the steering column, then the impulse is transferred to the gearbox, which, in turn, with the help of rods and tips, transfers it to the pivot levers.
In case of malfunctions of the steering rack, you need to contact a car workshop for specialists to carry out the restoration. Gearbox restoration is a set of measures that includes cleaning and replacing faulty system components. The main goal is to restore the original performance of the steering rack.
Considering the fact that the steering rack is one of the most important elements of a car's structure, it must be very carefully monitored and timely diagnosed, because any malfunctions can pose a threat to the lives of the driver and passengers.
Video (click to play). |
- It takes more effort to turn the steering wheel than before. In addition, the steering wheel of a car often "bites" (in such cases, it is important to always take into account the design features of the gearbox).
- An uncharacteristic rhythmic knock emanates from the side of the front suspension, which transmits vibrations (usually this indicates an already running problem).
- The hydraulic booster pump makes an unpleasant noise.
- The steering wheel has become more wobbly, due to the appearance of backlash.
- Oil leakage from the power steering system is again accompanied by tight rotation of the steering wheel and an unpleasant squeak.
If at least one of the above signs is found, you should immediately seek help from specialists. You shouldn't even think about repairing the rail at home, since for high-quality work you need to have a narrow specialization, as well as have the necessary set of tools and special equipment.
Many motorists consider full diagnostics a waste of time, especially in cases where the problem is "obvious". However, this opinion is erroneous, since comprehensive diagnostics helps to look at the whole picture, and to detect the causes of gearbox failure not only in the gearbox itself, but also in auxiliary systems. Full diagnostics is carried out in three stages:
- Initial inspection - helps to detect the root cause of the breakdown, as well as to exclude or confirm the involvement of malfunctions in the chassis. Carried out according to the following algorithm:
- Analysis of the performance of the hydraulic system.
- Analysis of the level and consistency of the lubricant in the reservoir.
- Analysis of cross-shaped backlash.
- Analysis of the state of the worm pair.
- Analysis of the support sleeve backlash.
- Analysis of the performance of steering rods and tips.
- Dismantled element diagnostics - for this, the removed unit is neatly placed in a vice, and first of all, the specialist checks the backlash of the support sleeve, and only after that analyzes the production by the teeth of the worm gear, also examines the apples of the steering rods for rust. As a result, the auto repairman has a complete picture of the situation, and he can already determine whether it is worthwhile to carry out repairs further or whether it is better to install a new gearbox.
- Steering rack troubleshooting - at this stage, the auto repairman carries out a complete disassembly of the gearbox into its components, and then carefully examines each element and checks its performance.
After completing the full diagnostics, the master is armed with all the necessary information and can begin to draw up a plan for the repair work, as well as discuss the financial side of the issue with the client.
Before proceeding directly to the discussion of the nuances of repairing the Peugeot 407 steering rack, let's talk about what components it consists of:- support sleeve;
- the basis of the system is a toothed shaft, thanks to which the gearbox works;
- spool mechanism.
- disassembly of PP;
- cleaning of all elements of the steering mechanism;
- Replacement of faulty component parts of the unit;
- Cleaning the gear shaft;
- Checking the gearbox;
- Replacement of components.
It is worth noting that in some cases it is possible to replace a faulty rail with a used one, but you only need to go for it when you completely trust your auto repairman and are confident in him.

Thank you, I have already started to think this is a contact signaling the self-unscrewing of the bolt, such as there is a signal to the panel that the bolt is unscrewing. In appearance, these strange plates look like the one I drew in the picture. If this is not a pillow, then I will boldly unscrew the bolt, thanks for the help!

The model from the Peugeot company under the index 407 was presented to the public in March 2004. The vehicle is based on the PSA platform.
The model is completed different types of steering boosters, depending on the engine: a hydraulic booster with a variable displacement pump (1.8 & 1.6HDІ), a hydroelectric booster (2.0 & 2.2 & 2.0HDІ) and a hydraulic booster with a control unit that processes data on vehicle speed, crankshaft revolutions, steering wheel angle and varying forces on the steering wheel (V6).
Leaking and knocking steering racks are the main reasons with which cars come to us. And the steering rack of the Peugeot 407 is no exception. The cause of fluid leakage from the power steering is the wear of the oil seals due to corrosion of the secondary and primary shafts, and it is necessary to diagnose the knock, because the knock may not come from the rail.
For diagnostics, we drive the car onto a lift.
We remove the steering rack, for this we remove the wheels and disassemble the front suspension.
We replace worn out bushings, oil seals, O-rings with new ones, clean the shaft from corrosion and restore it to its nominal size by spraying.
We check the rail on a special test bench under pressure
We install the repaired, restored rail on the car.
The last step in the repair is flushing the hydraulic system.
The car has been repaired. Repair time is 6.5 hours.
We guarantee the result. You will pay only after your problem is solved. The warranty applies to all our work for a period of 1 YEAR and without any mileage limitation. Therefore, you risk nothing.

Farhad, You should probably ask about the Peugeot Club at the Peugeot Club.
What's the point of specializing in Peugeot steering racks? What's so exclusive. IMHO - the company will burn out.

In order for the steering mechanism to work for a long time, you must not turn the steering wheel all the way, and even more so in this position, drive in, for example, on a curb when parking. You also need to change the power steering fluid in a timely manner. These are a few, but important points that you should pay attention to in order to steering rack your car was kept in working condition for as long as possible and did not require investments in its repair.
After removing from the car steering rack gets into the sink, then it is completely disassembled, all the main parts (housing, input shaft, torsion bar, output shaft, pressure mechanism, tubes, etc.) undergo a more thorough cleaning and troubleshooting. Our craftsmen make the parts necessary for repairs on their own using specialized equipment. The shafts, if tolerances permit, are restored. All seals: oil seals, bushings, etc. must be replaced with new ones. After assembly, the steering rack is tested on specialized equipment with deliberately exceeded loads than when operating on a car, and only after that, if all indicators are normal, is installed on the car.
In the process of repairing a steering rack, we always pay attention to the following things:
- Steering universal joint. It should work softly, without backlash, not bite or wedge.If this is not the case in the steering rack, the input shaft oil seal is damaged. As a result, the power steering fluid leaks through the upper oil seal.
- The fluid in the hydraulic system must be clean, free of impurities. Otherwise, during the operation of the rubbing parts of the mechanisms, the ‘skin’ effect appears, as a result of which the rack and the pump valve become clogged and worked out, and rapid wear of the units occurs. When repairing a rail, we must change the fluid.

hello everyone, please tell me please recently changed for the winter when turning on the spot there is a vibration on the steering wheel and is accompanied by a hum on the summer one like this was not possible because of rubber or not the car bought not long ago
This is not rubber, but a disease of all 407s. The thrust begins to fail. At a slow speed, turning the steering wheel, the steering wheel cracks as if there is no fluid in the power steering. It is necessary to restore the rail in the future or buy another
here is the rake and the price is there. But she is dear to me right on the service recommended that they can restore it. They remove, disassemble, clean, chrome in my opinion, if I'm not mistaken, put all sorts of new parts on it. In general, they restore it and put it back. They said that it is eternal, we'll see. For all this and some other little things, I paid almost $ 400. They did it for 2 days, although they said that it would take 3 days. But the steering wheel is as oiled, as once new, or even softer.
The steering rack of the Peugeot 406 is a mechanism that provides the ability to turn the vehicle. It is the connecting part between the steering wheel and the wheels, therefore it is important to monitor the correct operation and, if necessary, repair the rack.
You can determine the malfunction of the steering rack by the following signs:
- knocking and knocking felt by the driver through the steering wheel;
- the steering wheel has become tighter;
- the power steering pump emits extraneous noise;
- there was a play in the steering wheel;
- oil is oozing from the timing belt.
If any of the problems mentioned above occurs, contact the service station so that the technician can diagnose the rail and, if necessary, repair it. Do not postpone this work, as without timely repair, a complete replacement of the mechanism may be required.
Before starting an independent repair of the Peugeot 406 rail, you need to acquire all the necessary tools and equipment, as well as understand the technology of work.
Steering racks of all cars have several basic elements in their design:
- support sleeve;
- spool;
- gear.
Most often, the Peugeot 406 steering rack has to be repaired due to the appearance of a knock in the gear rack. To determine the cause, you need to carefully inspect the unit by driving the car into the inspection hole and turning off the engine.An experienced specialist will immediately determine whether the rail can be repaired, or if it already requires a complete replacement.
Remove the clamps and rings that secure the protective covers of the rail, and then remove the covers themselves. Having unbent the edges of the lock washers, you need to unscrew the inner tips with the outer tips and ball rods. Unscrew the stop locknut using a 41 spanner wrench. After that, unscrew the stop nut and pull out the spring.
Turning the gear clockwise, the stop must be shifted and pulled out of the crankcase using special pliers. Dismantle the cap that protects the gear, and then unscrew the nut with a wrench 24. With light blows on the crankcase through the lining, pull the gear and the ball bearing out of the crankcase.
Remove the thrust washer and press the bearing off the pinion shaft. After that, the steering rack of the Peugeot 406 can be removed for later repair.
The ball bearing of the steering rack must rotate freely without jamming. The front bearing races and rollers must also be intact - no signs of wear. If you have any doubts about their condition, you need to replace them.
Rail protectors, outer caps, cuffs, cap and rail bushings also need to be checked. If there are any breaks, cracks or loose fit to parts, it is best to replace them.
Be sure to check the radial and axial clearances of the steering rod joints and outer ends. If there is a backlash in them or if sand or dirt has penetrated into them, as well as there is corrosion, it is better to replace the parts as an assembly.
The rail should be installed with its smooth end into the crankcase from the gear side, having smeared the rail with a lubricant. Slide the ball bearing onto the gear and replace the thrust washer. Lubricate the gear and bearing with PIOL-1 and insert into the crankcase.
Next, you need to put the cuff of the gear in its place in the hole of the bearing nut, having previously lubricated the surfaces with the aforementioned grease. It is recommended to apply a special enamel, for example, NTs-273, to the thread of the bearing nut. Tighten the nut and then screw it in four places. Lubricate the cylindrical surface of the crankcase with a thin layer and insert the stop, and then the spring. Apply NTs-273 locknuts to the thread and screw it into the crankcase.
Tighten the locknut and at the end of the thread stroke, align the middle edge of the locknut with the stop nut mark. Lock the locknut in this position and back off the stop nut 30 degrees. Further, holding the stop nut, it is necessary to tighten the lock nut with a force of 6.5–8 kgf · m.
Throughout the course of the rack, the torque of the gear wheel should be in the range of 0.06–0.17 kgf · m. Insert the lock washers into place by inserting the tendrils into the grooves in the rail and tightening the rod ends. Bend the antennae to opposite sides.
The Peugeot 406 rail must be set to the middle position so that the difference in the values of its travel in both directions does not exceed 1.5 millimeters until it stops.
Replace the protective covers and secure them with rings and clamps.Place nuts and lugs on the threads of the rods, and tighten them after installing the rack and pinion mechanism to the machine and adjusting the camber / camber.
After completing the assembly of the Peugeot 406 steering rack, you need to make sure that when the rack is moved on the protective cover, no swelling and pinching occurs, and the torque of the gear along the entire course of the rack is within 0.06-0.17 kgf · m, as before ... Otherwise, you need to adjust the steering gear and repeat the measurements.
We invite you to watch a video about solving the problem with reiki knocking:
Suspicious rattling of the steering rack is a rather unpleasant experience for any car owner. The owners of Peugeot 405, faced with such a problem, are even more indignant, because the repair of the Peugeot steering rack from the official dealers of the French company costs a lot of money.
If you are faced with such a situation, it is important to know that you can solve this problem with a minimum investment of money. So, in this article I will tell you how to repair the Peugeot steering rack on your own.
I talked with experienced reversals and found out that in my case, either the support sleeve on the left knocks on the rail, or the repair kit on the right side is wearing out. I didn't see a single backlash on the left, but there were plenty of backlashes on the right side. I could believe that it is possible to make a fluoroplastic bushing.
This is exactly what I decided to do.
First you need to dismantle the wheels and support the car. Be sure to keep in mind that in the future you will need to work with the rail on the left. Make sure there is nothing obstructing the installation.
Next, you need to take a syringe and use it to pump out the hydraulic fluid from the power steering tank.
Now it's time to unscrew the nut from the tie rod and from the tip.
This can be done using a specialized tool, but if you do not have one, you can solve the problem with an ordinary hammer.
From my own experience, I will say that those parts that you unscrew during the repair process need to be thoroughly watered with a wedge.
The next step will be to work from the side of the passenger compartment: before unscrewing the cross, you need to put marks with the help of which it was easy to navigate in the future and set the steering wheel and wheels straight.
Next, you need to dismantle the hydraulic pipes by carefully unscrewing them.
In order to make the work easier and more convenient, it is worth getting confused and making small keys.
Next stage. You need to unscrew and remove the cross from the bottom. I think you, like me, will not have to make notes there, because traces of rust will tell you the right way.
I think you know that in the Peugeot 405, the shift rods are attached to the steering rack. I do not recommend removing them with a hammer and a guide - it would be much safer to do this with a 16 key.
It's time to unscrew the steering rack.
To remove the rail, you will need to unscrew the following bracket:
So, we can easily remove the steering rack.
It is necessary to disassemble the steering rack. There is a chance that you may need a gas wrench (you will need to use it when removing the steering tip).
Using a chisel, you need to carefully mark the pipe of the hydraulic pump.
Next, you need to remove the steering rod boot. With the so-called "cap" you will have to suffer and re-arm yourself with a chisel. We unscrew the steering rods.
Here's a top hat in person.
Then you need to unscrew and get the support sleeve. Care is required at this stage, as there is a spring in this structure - it is very easy to lose it.
We dismantle the rack housing. For this purpose, a fitter's assembly is ideal.
Everything needs to be thoroughly cleaned and washed. Folds into a bag. Personally, I went to the turning shop and tried to make a fluoroplastic bushing.I do not recommend purchasing a repair kit - it is very short-lived.
We are looking for the necessary mandrel and knock out the spent sleeve.
The photo does not convey the whole problem, so I will explain: the worn sleeve was the culprit of the knock.
Here are some fluoroplastic bushings they made for me: the first is too wide, the second is too narrow. I hated it, but I took the file and tried to rectify the situation. I grinded the outer diameter in order to insert the bushing into the rack housing. Then I inserted and processed the inner diameter.
Now you need to secure the bushing with a bolt.
At the end, we process everything with grease and assemble in the reverse order. Ready!
The knock of the steering rack always causes negative emotions in the owners of the Peugeot 405. Especially the manifestation of negativity comes after the owner finds out how much this repair of the Peugeot 405 steering rack costs from the officials.
And so, having weighed all the pros and cons, it was decided to try to eliminate this ailment with our own hands. There is time, hands grow from the right places - there are all conditions =)
After talking with the knowledgeable, I found out that either the support sleeve on the left can knock in my rail, or the repair kit on the right is rubbing off. I did not find any backlash on the left side, but on the right it was pretty much backlash! There is reason to believe that it is possible to carve the bushing out of secondary plastic.
So it was decided to do so.
First you need to remove the wheels and put the car on stands. Think in advance that the rail will have to be reached from the left side in the direction of the car. Park so that nothing gets in the way
Using a syringe, pump out the hydraulic fluid from the power steering reservoir
Then you need to screw the nut on the steering rod and on the steering tip
This procedure can be performed using a special puller, but if this is not at hand, we resort to using a simple hammer.
We recommend preliminarily treating all loosening parts with a WD-shear.
Next, we will work in the cabin: before unscrewing the cross-piece, make marks so that it is easier to put the steering wheel straight and the wheels straight in place later.
Now carefully unscrew the hydraulic pipes
For more convenient work, we make keys of smaller sizes
Farther. He unscrewed and took out the crosspiece from the bottom. There was no need to mark here: time marked itself, everything is rusty, where there are no slots.
In 405-ke, gear shift rods are attached to the steering rack. I do not advise knocking them down with a hammer and a guide, it is better to torment them with a key for 16.
We unscrew the steering rack itself
To remove the steering rack, you will have to unscrew this bracket
Now we take out the steering rack
Let's start disassembling the steering rack of the Peugeot 405. You may need a gas wrench to remove the steering tip.
With a chisel we carefully mark the tube of the hydraulic nose
Now remove the steering rod boot. It is more difficult with the "cap" - I had to use the chisel again. We unscrew the steering rods.
We unscrew and take out the support sleeve. Here you have to be careful, there is a spring, if it fires, you will search all over the garage to look for.
We remove the body of the worm. In order not to break anything, I had to try. The best fit was a montage.
Everything was thoroughly cleaned, washed and folded into a bag. I'll go to the turner tomorrow. Let's try to carve a bushing out of secondary plastic. There is no point in buying a repair kit, because it is enough for a short time.
Use a suitable mandrel to knock out the old sleeve.
The photo is bad, but the reason for the knock is visible: the copper-graphite bushing has worn out from old age.
These are the bushings made of secondary plastic for me: one is really big (dangles on the shaft), and the second is too small. I had to pick up a file and then work with a little knife. I immediately grinded the outer diameter to insert the sleeve into the rack body. And then, having inserted it, processed the inner diameter a little.
Video (click to play). |
Here you go.Now you can thoroughly lubricate everything with lithol (salidol can eventually roll up and stand in one place) and collect. Since I plan to ride a typewriter happily ever after, I changed all the rods, tips and anthers.
