For the convenience of assembling the Peugeot 406 steering rack after repair, clamp the crankcase in a vice through spacers made of wood or other non-solid material. Install the rack bushing with the ring in the crankcase, lubricate it with FIOL-1. Next, insert the bushing thrust ring and press the roller bearing into the crankcase, filling it with the same grease.

The rail should be installed with a smooth end into the crankcase from the gear side, smearing the rail with a lubricant. Slide the ball bearing onto the gear and replace the thrust washer. Lubricate the gear and bearing with FIOL-1 and insert into the crankcase.

Next, you need to put the gear collar in its place in the hole of the bearing nut, after having smeared the surfaces with the above grease. It is recommended to apply a special enamel on the thread of the bearing nut, for example, NTs-273. Tighten the nut, and then tighten it in four places. Lightly coat the cylindrical surface of the crankcase and insert the stop and then the spring. Apply NTs-273 locknuts to the threads and screw it into the crankcase.

Tighten the locknut and at the end of the thread stroke, align the middle part of the face of the locknut with the stop nut mark. Lock the locknut in this position and back off the stop nut 30 degrees. Further, holding the stop nut, it is necessary to tighten the lock nut with a force of 6.5–8 kgf m.

Throughout the course of the rack, the moment of scrolling the gear should be in the range of 0.06–0.17 kgf m. Insert the lock washers into place by inserting the antennae into the grooves of the rail and wrapping the tips with the rods. Bend the antennae to opposite edges.

The Peugeot 406 rail must be set to the middle position so that the difference in the values ​​\u200b\u200bof its travel in both directions to the stop does not exceed 1.5 millimeters.

Check the full travel of the steering rack in one direction and the other until it stops - it should be equal to 124 mm ± 1. A protective cap must be installed on the splines of the gear so that the index of the cap at the middle position of the rack coincides with the protrusion-pointer on the crankcase of the mechanism.

Put the protective covers in their places and fix them with rings and clamps.Install the nuts and lugs on the threads of the rods and tighten them after mounting the rack and pinion to the machine and adjusting the toe/camber.

After completing the assembly of the Peugeot 406 steering rack, you need to make sure that when the rack is moved on the protective cover, swelling and pinching do not occur, and the moment of rotation of the gear along the entire course of the rack is within 0.06–0.17 kgf m, as before . Next, you need to take a syringe and use it to pump out the hydraulic fluid from the power steering tank.

Now it's time to unscrew the nut from the tie rod and from the tip.

This can be done with a specialized tool, but if you do not have one, you can solve the problem with an ordinary hammer.

From my own experience, I’ll say that those parts that you unscrew during the repair process need to be thoroughly watered with a Vedashka.

The next step will be work from the side of the cabin: before unscrewing the cross, you need to put marks, with the help of which it was easy to orient yourself and set the steering wheel and wheels straight in the future.

Next, you need to dismantle the hydraulic tubes by carefully unscrewing.

In order to make the work easier and more convenient, it is worth getting confused and making small keys.

Next stage. It is necessary to unscrew and remove the cross from below. I think you, like me, do not have to make notes there, because traces of rust will tell you the right way.

I think you know that in the Peugeot 405, gearshift rods are attached to the steering rack. I do not recommend removing them with a hammer and bit - it will be much safer to do this with a 16 wrench.

It's time to unscrew the steering rack.

The steering rack needs to be disassembled. There is a possibility that you may need a gas wrench (it will need to be used when removing the steering tip).

Using a chisel, carefully mark the hydraulic pump tube.

Next, you need to remove the tie rod boot. With the so-called "cap" will have to suffer and again armed with a chisel. We unscrew the steering rods.

Next you need to unscrew and get the support sleeve. At this stage, caution is required, since this design contains a spring - it is very easy to lose it.

We dismantle the rack housing. For this purpose, a locksmith is ideal.

Everything needs to be thoroughly cleaned and washed. Folds into a package. Personally, I turned to the turning shop and tried to make a sleeve from fluoroplast.I do not recommend purchasing a repair kit - it is very short-lived.

We are looking for the necessary mandrel and knock out the used bushing.

The photo does not convey the whole problem, so I will explain: the worn bushing became the culprit of the knock.

These are the PTFE bushings they made for me: the first one is too wide, the second one is too narrow. How I did not want to, but I took a file and tried to fix the situation. I turned the outer diameter in order to insert the sleeve into the rack housing. Next, I inserted and processed the inner diameter.

Now you need to fix the bushing with a bolt.

At the end, we process everything with grease and assemble in the reverse order. Ready!

The knock of the steering rack always causes negative emotions among Peugeot 405 owners. Especially the manifestation of negativity comes after the owner finds out how much this very Peugeot 405 steering rack repair costs from the officials.

Now remove the tie rod boot. But with the “cap” it’s more difficult - I had to use the chisel again. We unscrew the steering rods.

Unscrew and remove the support bushing. Here you have to be careful, there is a spring, if it shoots, you will search all over the garage.

We remove the body of the worm. It took some effort to not break anything. Fitting was the best.

Everything was thoroughly cleaned, washed and put into a bag. Tomorrow I'll go to the turner. Let's try to carve a bushing from a second-layer plastic. It makes no sense to buy a repair kit, because. it doesn't last long.

Using a suitable mandrel, knock out the old bushing.

The photo is bad, but the reason for the knock is visible: the copper-graphite bushing has worn out from old age.

These are the bushings made of recycled plastic: one is really big (dangling on the shaft), and the second is too small. I had to pick up a file and work with a knife afterward. I immediately turned the outer diameter to fit the bushing into the rack housing. And then, inserting, carefully processed the inner diameter.

Here you go.Now you can thoroughly lubricate everything with lithol (salidol can roll up and stand in one place over time) and collect. Since I plan to ride a typewriter happily ever after, I changed all the traction, tips and anthers.
