Do-it-yourself suzuki swift steering rack repair

In detail: do-it-yourself Suzuki Swift steering rack repair from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.

As you know, I have a 2005 Swift, FWD on mechanics in the simplest configuration, Hungarian. The mileage has already exceeded 126 thousand km, but there was a knock when hitting obstacles, especially when turning left. 15 thousand ago, the left tie rod was replaced, as well as the front arms and stabilizer bushings. Specialists said that the steering rack was a little loose, but not a crime.

Now, apparently, it’s already a crime, because the knock is starting to get… So, in fact, I’m turning to you, friends, did anyone repair the steering rack on their Swift with their own hands? Repair in specialized services costs from 9500 rubles to 11 thousand. Where how. Yes, and it is not known how long such a rail will last. I do not plan to sell the car, so I want to fix it at minimal cost. Waiting for answers and comments.

Hi) I didn’t do such repairs, and my Japanese didn’t break), maybe one of Ours will say something. )

Hi hello)) a familiar problem!) I ran into such a problem at about 75 poke - also a knock on the steering wheel, I also thought that everything was a crime and we would all die ... I went to Avtomir on Irkutsk (where I have been serviced for 4 years), then another to other specialists, just in case … yes, there is a small backlash in the rail. But this is a disease of our kids and replacing the rail can save for a short time or not save at all, and they told me that it’s easier to drive like this ... and I drive (already 100k) ... the unpleasant knock disappeared over time, after about a few tyks ... it’s just nowhere - I took it and disappeared ... my tie rods are in good order, they don’t require replacements, I have already changed the stabilizer bushings 2 or 3 times — when the grease goes out, for example, when driving through speed bumps, the sound is heartbreaking! the way out is either to lubricate or periodically change ... it's just an elastic band, and the rubber bands still wear out quite quickly ...
In general, my advice to you is to contact the specialists in order to EXACTLY understand why this sound is (I can tell you to whom, if necessary, the more simple diagnostics are budgetary), if the traction is normal and only the rail backlashes a little (!, i.e. within ) - then drive like this, trying to fix factory sores is pointless ... but change the stabilizer bushings for sure, there the gum is probably already in the trash ... but from worn bushings it’s not a knock, but rather a rattle ...

Video (click to play).

I had the same position, but seriously thought about it. I wrote that the bushings changed 15 thousand ago. They were quite lively, but replaced at the first opportunity. I want to fix the rail with my own hands!

A familiar problem. They changed the steering wheel on my Swift under warranty for 45000, began to tap at 55000. They changed a friend at 25000, began to tap at 45000. I also started clattering on the SX, I will do it. pm. He will help and tell you what and where.

Thanks! I read his post, but he did not do it himself ... I would like to read the comment of an expert. What parts are worn out, what to buy and generally what pitfalls.

He is aware of the whole process, write.

Can he be attracted to this topic ?! I think that EVERYONE will be interested!

Same stuff" ! I was told that over time, some kind of plastic bushing in the rail begins to knock. It seems like she doesn’t go separately ... And there x.z.

The result - I scored and drive like this ... I will fix it when I replace the shock absorbers with adjustable ones, and I will shake up the suspension =)

Actually, I'm here! Characteristic knocks appeared and only intensified, so it was decided to repair the steering rack! in the course of action, the steering tips were also replaced (there were silks when turning, this is 100% that the tips) you also need to check the salent blocks on the levers, becausebecause of them, too, can be knocking! My good friend repaired the steering rack for me (that’s why he did it honestly!) By the way, our adjustable rails can be tightened, and if the knock goes away, then it’s definitely the rails (it will appear again later) In my case, the rail was already tightened before me and the factory anthers were stuffed grease! Therefore, as it turned out, when you remove the anthers from the steering rack, they need to be changed to rubber ones (plastic from the factory and on heat shrink) and since some smart guy didn’t change them and additionally tightened them with ordinary clamps, water got in and did its insidious business: it got under the replacement bearing, bushings were machined from caprolon (today this is the best material that will go) and the rods were polished. Rust appeared on them because of the water (there may also be a working out then the bar will need to be machined!)

Thanks for the info. I read that post, but I realized that this is not exactly our case (not that car), although it looks similar ... I realized that I need to change this bearing, but WHERE TO GET this material ... I don’t know ... maybe I don’t quite understand WHAT it is ?! What dusters to take? The ones on the pulls? Is it necessary to install original Suzuki or are there substitutes? What are the best clamps to use? As I understand it, if I also got water, then it’s almost impossible to polish in garage conditions ?! Or use sandpaper from 800 to 2000, and then some polishing paste on a drill?! I need help... :-(

I took the anthers (which are on the rods to the steering rack) Lumferder (analogue of the original ones, but it is imperative that they be rubber) or when you remove them to look for (pick up) similar ones, after repair I put them on the sealant, I took the usual clamps that are tightened with a screwdriver (but tighten without abuse because everything will be on sealant there), when you disassemble the rail, then you will be guided by the place whether it is necessary to change the bearing and whether it is necessary to polish the rods (you simply cannot buy a bearing, took measurements and called all the stores that sell bearings, took the most expensive and reliable one) as a friend of mine did it to me, he polished the rods for me at the factory and machined capralon bushings in the same place (they also took the dimensions of the bushing there)

Here I read and there is less and less hope for repairs on my own ... I don’t like it when the car hangs on a lift or is generally immobilized. Therefore, most likely, I will go to the masters. They promise to complete the work on the day of the request (minimum 4 hours). Only here is the price of 300 USD. If possible, I will try to film the entire repair process ...

As if not everything is as simple as it seems! Removing the subframe is also not so easy, but not very difficult either! My advice to you is if your arms grow from your shoulders, first tighten the steering river for a couple of weeks (there is a nut there) if it is then go to the masters if it’s something else, look for the reason further, if you were closer, you would be happy to help you!

It is easier and more interesting to work in a company with like-minded people! As they say, one head is good, but two or more is even better! I will mature. On the next bump under the roar of the steering rack, I can spit on everything and go to the masters ... (

I'm having the same problem along the way. The knock is deaf when driving over bumps if I go to the left. I dived under the steering wheel, removed the protective cover on one side, pulled the rail up and down and it could move about 1 mm. I think I might try pulling it up too. Do you have to take it off to tighten it up? not possible on the spot?

To pull up it is not necessary to shoot, a good pit and a set of keys! If the knock or click is on the left, look at the steering tips just in case!

ok thanks, I'll take it into account!

my.housecope.com/wp-content/uploads/ext/44/921206u-960.jpg a nut to turn!

thank you so much for this!

I decided to repair the steering rack myself, as indicated above in this post. I ordered a bushing on the rail in advance (I found the part number somewhere on the Internet), waited for the part to arrive … and crawled under the car.In short, I removed the rail, although everything turned out to be not as simple as it was written on the Internet. Imagine my surprise when the rail turned out to be not the same as shown on the Internet ... In short, the rail turned out to be collapsible, instead of a rubber-metal bushing there is a split PTFE bushing, which is quite easily removed. But here the problems began: this sleeve is not sold anywhere ... nowhere at all! As a separate part, it does not go (I did not find it in any catalog). Of course, you can carve it yourself from fluoroplastic, but there is no such material, and the dimensions must be exactly observed (a very thin-walled sleeve is obtained). In general, there was nowhere to go and I took my rail to Moscow in HYDRAULICS. The repair took 4 hours (I don’t know what they did there, but all the bushings were changed, serviced, and they gave a guarantee). I put the rail in place, I haven’t been able to test it yet (it’s not possible to leave the garage due to weather conditions).

Explain a few points, what does it mean to be fixed with a retaining ring? those. was a cut made along the entire diameter of the sleeve and the sleeve sticks out a little outside the rail and is fixed with a ring? or how? Photos to see.

I think it's safer to drill in 3 places and ventilate.

I just plan to do this procedure myself, there are a few misunderstandings, so I’m trying to take them into account so that it doesn’t work out that I will walk for a week until I correct the situation.

Picture 4 (counting from the top) shows how to remove the retaining ring (it is number 2)
On the inner surface of the cover there is a recess around the circumference, and this is where the retaining ring is located.
Easily removed with a thin flat head screwdriver.
It is very easy to check the method of fixation by loosening the collar of the anther, pull it off and look at it (5 min).

Today I bought a sleeve for OKI for 26 rubles - the diameters are suitable, it seems. I’ll get into it on the weekend 🙂

I repaired the rail by replacing the bushing, THE REPORT PRESENT HERE HELPED VERY MUCH!, I can add the following: since the rail is not collapsible, i.e. the sleeve cannot be pulled out just like that, it is necessary to grind off the rolling, but not completely. leaving with 02-04 mm straighten with pliers and then roll it back with a hammer. We get less crap and take it with drilling holes for the pins or installing spring rings (you don’t have to do this at all) and it will be fine to keep such a winding.

I also recommend liberally lubricating the rail with LITOL, and especially the gear roller.

I will help with the repair of the rail to the Novosib-Berdsk swift drivers

there are 3 ways to find out, the first one: drive the pepelats into the pit, pull off the boot from the left edge of the rail and check out how it looks and compare it with the photo of Ansar; the second is to climb into the Suzuki forum and ask there if anyone did it; and the third is to look for the manual for the cruise and look for this rack assembly there.

after the rack stopped rattling, there were still small knocks in the steering, which appear on roads with an abundance of small gravel-type bumps, at speeds of more than 15-20 km / h. There are two reasons, the first is in the telescopic axle with 2 cardan shafts, which is attached to the rail (photo No. 1 of Ansar) and the second is in the steering column, somewhere in the electric booster. I decided to score for now, still quiet knocks are heard when you pile on the primer from the heart and go without music.

eggor] at the chevrolet cruze itself, and the steering wheel is knocking, for a long time I searched on the internet about this terrible knock, and who once stumbled upon one OFFICIAL site where letter for letter is described about it, even these pictures))) so hare to praise anNSAR , he just copy-paste, and you pour pride on him))) ugh, ansar, shame on you. And if anyone is interested, I can send you the link

Yeees! Russia is rich in smart people who will solve the problem and not break off to enlighten people! Honor and praise to them. But there will be some “Eccentric with the letter M” like ErgoP, who is hammering with a rattling rack and cannot solve it himself, but here it is.army man always please. At the same time, here's what's interesting - “one OFFICIAL site, where letter for letter is described about it, even these pictures” in earlier comments asks for permission to use this material, and this one “. erov Megre ”convicts Ansar of plagiarism, at least look at the dates of publications, radish. The author of the review not only didn’t get any “nishtyaks” from this, but also let other artisans earn money. So, as Miloslavsky, who had just leaned back from the zone, said in the film “Ivan Vasilyevich Changes Profession”: - If you interfere with the academician again, I will U. And you, Ansar, respect and respect from all normal people.

*The cost of repairing the steering rack includes:

  • primary diagnosis
  • fault detection
  • replacement of all seals
  • repressing the piston on the main shaft (if required by the design feature)
  • replacement of teflon rings
  • replacement of rubber seals
  • grinding (in the presence of corrosion fragments on the shafts)
  • final check on the hydraulic stand

In case of non-repairability of the main shaft (non-removable corrosion, lack of teeth), distributor gearbox (non-removable corrosion, lack of teeth), wear of the steering rack inside the housing, damage to hydraulic lines, the cost of repairing the steering rack is negotiated additionally.

A company specializing in the repair of steering racks will reliably take care of the control system of a Suzuki car. The work takes place using the latest equipment and experienced mechanics. We work daily in Moscow.

Uneven road surface leads to defects in the distribution gearbox. You can notice problems by the following symptoms:

  • There is noise when turning.
  • The steering wheel is too hard or too soft.
  • The steering wheel returns to its original position with a delay.
  • Loss of vehicle stability at high speeds.

With timely contact with a car service, debugging the mechanism is inexpensive. You will need to clean the device of dirt and replace the seals and crackers.

With significant wear on the assembly, it will be necessary to replace the main parts (toothed main shaft, auxiliary shaft with gear, tie rods), which will increase the cost of putting the system in order.

When contacting a car service, work begins with diagnostics and determining ways to debug the mechanism. The client is informed of the location of the damage and the methods by which the situation will be corrected. At the same time, costs are calculated so that before the start of work it is known how much it costs to debug the mechanism. The price is agreed with the client.

The steering rack is dismantled from the Suzuki car and transferred to a place specially equipped for work. The mechanism is disassembled into its component parts, and each part is checked for wear.

Damaged parts, bearing bushings, gaskets and seals are replaced with new ones, and those suitable for performing their functions are cleaned and polished. The device is assembled into a single unit and tested outside the car. Then the installation and debugging of connections with mating parts takes place.

Come to the car service, give your Suzuki car professional care.

Repairing the steering rack or power steering gearbox, as it is also called, is an important matter - you need to be able to do it yourself. Why? Yes, because if there is a malfunction of the steering rack, then there is a steering failure, and this can turn into a disaster on the road. To prevent this from happening, you need to know how to fix steering rack.

Since the rail is the part that connects the steering wheel to the wheels, it also feels the bumps in the roads, bumps when cornering. Accordingly, the steering rack wears out quite a lot and needs proper care.

  • there was a knock in the rail, a noticeable beating in the steering wheel;
  • the steering wheel began to spin harder;
  • when turning the steering wheel, the play of the steering rack began to be felt;
  • power steering fluid began to leak from the steering column;
  • there were unusual sounds during the operation of the power steering.

Basically, repairing a steering rack on a VAZ 21099 is not much different from repairing a steering rack on a BMW 3 (E46), for example. The principle of operation is the same, but there are some differences in the design. I must admit that the work is quite complicated - before starting it, you need to know the steering rack device.

A steering rack repair kit will come in handy, consisting of oil seals, o-rings, bushings, as well as corrugations, a gear shaft bearing and a tube of grease. The tool box should contain: a special octagonal wrench, tools for removing bearings and pliers for mounting the retaining ring. Of course, a standard set of wrenches should also be at hand. Do-it-yourself steering rack repair is done on a flyover or inspection ditch.

This happens in three stages - 1) removal of the steering rack, disassembly / cleaning of parts; 2) replacement of unusable parts with new ones; 3) check the gear shaft of the steering rack.

  1. Use a flat screwdriver to unscrew the steering rods from the steering rack
  2. Unscrew the bottom plug of the gear shaft.
  3. Loosen the lock nut.
  4. Remove retaining ring and knock out shaft.
  5. Remove the bottom seal
  6. Remove the locking pin blocking the upper gland.
  7. Turn the retaining plug, pull out the retaining ring by the wire.
  8. Pull out the steering rack on the right side, remove the oil seal with a plastic sleeve from it.
  9. Pull out the stuffing box, plug, remove the spring, clamping mechanism.
  1. After applying a special lubricant, install the inner oil seal (spring down).
  2. Insert the rail into the housing.
  3. Put the bushing on the right oil seal, lubricate all parts, install the oil seal.
  4. Install the plug, not forgetting to fix it with wire.
  5. Slide the lower oil seal onto the gear shaft.
  6. Set the steering rack to the middle position and insert the toothed shaft into place (previously lubricated).
  7. Install the upper seal, install the circlip.
  8. Tighten the lower lock nut, as well as the bearing, plug.
  9. Install and tighten clamping mechanism, spring and plug.

Further installation takes place in the reverse order.

As seen, do-it-yourself steering rack repair quite within the power of a person familiar with the repair in general terms. By the way, mechanical and hydraulic steering racks are subject to self-repair, which are much more common than their modern counterpart - an electronic steering rack. The latter needs a special setting, the fuss with which is best left to professionals.

Repairing a car is rarely a pleasant experience, especially if it is extremely necessary. Unfortunately, quite often such situations are unexpected and, as always, inopportunely, require financial investments and time. If we talk about such a moment as the repair of the SUZUKI steering rack, then in this case, it is possible to predict the occurrence of problems in general. Since the main reason for their appearance is the wear of the mechanism over time and poor road conditions.

However, all the main malfunctions of steering racks for SUZUKI cars are, as a rule, wear of seals, loosening of the fastening system, corrosion damage and leakage of the hydraulic booster working fluid.

It should be said right away that this breakdown does not depend on the model or brand of the car. And if you are the owner of a Suzuki cx4, you may need to repair the steering rack for this configuration with the same frequency as the repair of the Suzuki Swift steering rack. The first malfunctions in this mechanism most often appear only after a run of 200 thousand kilometers, and subject to regular maintenance, this interval can be much longer.

As with all types of vehicles, repairing Suzuki steering racks is a top-priority task that definitely should not be put off for the future.After all, if problems in the steering have already arisen, a complete failure of control can occur at any time. And this means that the movement on this transport can lead to a real emergency on the road, which can not only aggravate the condition of the car, but also put people's lives at risk.

The most common signs of SUZUKI steering rack failure are: fluid leakage from the power steering hydraulic system; loosening of the mechanism and the occurrence of steering wheel play; various noises (knocking) and deviations from normal operating modes (difficulty turning the steering wheel), etc.

All these signs, both in combination and individually, indicate the need to seek help from our service center.

Many motorists ignorantly assume that SUZUKI steering rack repair can be done independently. Yes, it is quite possible if you have professional equipment (lifts and diagnostic stands). But even in this case, extensive knowledge of how to dismantle the steering rack of this car will be required. You will spend much less time, effort and money if you simply contact a specialist, not to mention the quality of the repairs being carried out.

In a car service, the repair of Suzuki steering racks is divided into several main stages. The first is the removal of the part and its complete cleaning from all possible contaminants. The second stage is the diagnosis of breakdowns and their elimination, including the replacement of worn parts and lubricants. The final stage of the repair is testing the rail under a load created on a special stand. In some cases, it may be necessary to completely replace the steering rack mechanism with a new one.

Symptoms: knocking in the steering rack, which manifests itself when driving through small bumps (a disease of all Corollas with electric power steering).
The diagnosis of servicemen is the replacement of the rail (in practice, it helps out for a short time and costs a lot).
Solution: replacing everything in the rail that can knock. And there are only two places in such rails - the adjusting unit and in the area of the sleeve located at the opposite end of the rail (in the case of right-hand drive cars, the left side of the rail). And since nothing needs to be changed in the adjusting unit, the entire repair comes down to replacing the factory bushing with a custom-made one.

We climb into the pedal assembly and remove the protection from the steering shaft, it is unscrewed by hand, it can be removed easily:

We completely unscrew the bolt that secures the intermediate shaft to the cross:

Image - Do-it-yourself Suzuki Swift steering rack repair

IMPORTANT! Put the wheels straight, remove the key from the ignition lock, lock the steering wheel. This is done in order to prevent, after removing the rack, turning the steering wheel by more revolutions than it should be. Otherwise, a break in the wires of the “snail” of the airbag and a malfunction of the latter is inevitable.

We hang out in front of the car and take off the wheels (the front ones are enough).

Next comes the removal of the steering rack. It has been proven from our own experience that it is possible to unscrew the fasteners of the rail without additional disassembly, but pulling out the rail is very time consuming. Do not waste time, twist the stretcher - save a lot of time and effort.

But first - the steering tips: we take out the cotter pin, unscrew the nut, with a sharp biting blow of the hammer we hit the place indicated below, and the finger falls out by itself (we do it with both sides

We unscrew the subframe, 4 bolts to the body, 3 bolts in the area of the rear engine mount and 3 nuts in the same place.

After that, the subframe, along with the rail, gently (if you planned to unscrew the last bolt correctly) lowers and hangs on the levers and anti-roll bar. Everything - the rail is in full view: unscrew:

We remove and carry to the workbench

Let's start disassembling it:
1) Remove the rubber boot.

2) We take the key for 12 and unscrew the bolt indicated in the photo.

3) Remove the intermediate shaft.

4) Unscrew the locknut (we used a gas wrench)

5) Unscrew the clamping glass of the rack shaft.

6) Then we put on and fix the intermediate shaft again, then with a light blow with a copper hammer on it we take out the entire shaft with the bearing.

7) Turning the rail over, disassemble the adjusting unit: with a 41 wrench, unscrew the lock nut

8) Then we unscrew the adjusting cup using any flat object, take out the spring and the clamping piston.

10) We unscrew the left rod from the rail using the keys 29 and 22.

11) On the reverse side, relax the large clamp and unfasten the boot.

12) We take out the rolling pin from the rail, put it aside.

13) We look at the rail from the left end - we see an aluminum pressure washer, behind it - the notorious bushing.

14) We hook the washer with a hook and knock it out, then take out the sleeve.

We are modifying a prefabricated PTFE bushing according to the attached drawing.

15) On the new sleeve, we make a longitudinal cut, which is necessary for its compression and putting into place. We orient the cut in the direction of the direction of movement of the car - in this direction the rail experiences the least load.

16) Lubricate the sleeve and carefully straighten the sleeve, check the fit of the sleeve with the free end of the rolling pin.

17) With a suitable head, we press in the aluminum washer. We put the rock in place. We insert the shaft into place, for this, with a key of 22, we swing the rolling pin around its axis and at the same time push the shaft - at a certain moment the gears are combined and the shaft falls through. We twist the clamping cup of the shaft until it stops, lock it with a lock nut. We assemble the adjusting assembly, tighten the adjusting cup until it stops and release it 90 degrees, lock it with a lock nut. Subsequently, the tightening torque can be adjusted on the car after a test drive with a certain skill, the mechanism must be tightened to a state where, when exiting a turn, the steering wheel itself returns to a straight position. Thrust into place, anthers into place, tighten. Rail on the subframe, subframe to the car. Near the rear (in relation to the rear of the car) fastenings of the subframe to the body there are holes on the body and on the subframe, the combination of which excludes the removal of the caster. We attract everything and climb into the salon. There we weaken the upper cross, move the shaft between the crosses up and put the lower cross on the intermediate shaft. We are tightening everything. Subsequently, you can similarly align the steering wheel if, when driving straight ahead, the steering wheel looks slightly to the side.

Any car owner understands how important the correct operation of the steering unit of the car is. After all, it is this part of it that ensures safe movement and peace of mind on the road. It is necessary to monitor the condition of the steering rack, because if it is faulty, an accident may occur. It is impossible to allow a complete breakdown of this node. Therefore, when the first signs of premature wear of the rail appear, you need to go to a technical service. The Korsa service station in Moscow recommends Suzuki Swift owners to come for free diagnostics if the car has the following symptoms:

  • clearance in the steering rack;
  • difficulty in turning the steering wheel;
  • drifts when cornering;
  • unpleasant sounds in the front;
  • oil leakage.

    Mechanics carefully inspect the entire steering system of the car on a computer stand, and, if necessary, begin restoration work. Repair will be inexpensive if the parts of the steering assembly were not too broken. The warehouses have the necessary components that need to be replaced first:

  • oil seals;
  • main shaft;
  • distribution gearbox;
  • toothed shaft;
  • crackers;
  • support bushings.

    The price of repair work depends on the time spent by the specialist, and the parts themselves, which are replaced with new ones. You can find out approximately how much the necessary service costs on the website or in the technical center itself. The exact amount is called only after computer diagnostics.

    The cost of a new unit is slightly higher than the partial replacement of its elements. But such a service may be required if the entire steering rack is completely unsuitable for work. Our technical center makes it possible to buy new items at a more loyal pricing policy. You can sign up for service or clarify whether the required unit is available by phone +7 (495) 308-83-09. We are always in touch, because we are ready to help the client in any situation.

    Service "Auto-Rail" carries out repair of steering racks Suzuki Swift. The price for it is formed from several types of work.

    hello, we drove the car after repairing the steering rack, after starting the car, the steering wheel itself turns all the way to the left, is there any way to set it to its original position, thanks

    Probably not sorted carefully. so I had something similar on the Lancer - they mixed up the tubes when assembling.

    So you need to calibrate the position sensor.

    it is necessary to somehow set it to its initial position, it does not oscillate on them

    In your opinion, you can stupidly change the rail and everything will work.

    There is a position sensor, so it needs to show zero.

    Perhaps the procedure is done by dealer equipment.

    Maybe through the DLC jumper.

    ))) in this every now and then the rail was changed to a used one and everything works, but they gave this one to the dealers, they said that there would be some kind of rail and they would put the shaft on it))) thanks, the topic can be closed

    The modern, balanced and ergonomic car SUZUKI SWIFT pleasantly surprises motorists with a wide range of active and passive safety.

    Are you interested in steering rack repair on Suzuki Swift?

    Image - Do-it-yourself Suzuki Swift steering rack repair

    When driving, one of the components of safety is the serviceability of the steering system. Maneuverability, stability, controllability, safety and ride comfort depend on it.

    Steering rack SUZUKI SWIFT - a unit exposed to the external environment. If the working fluid is contaminated, driving on poor-quality road surfaces, hitting curbs and obstacles, the rail fails.

    You can detect a malfunction by the signs:

    - noise from the power steering and pump,
