If it's not difficult, could you send me such an instruction too?

Volvo cars have been recognized as one of the safest in the world many times. An important element that ensures this safety is the correct operation of the steering rack - the main unit of the vehicle control mechanism. And, accordingly, any malfunction in the operation of the steering rack can cause an accident. Therefore, the motorist needs to know what breakdowns are, what are their main signs and, most importantly, how the steering rack of Volvo cars is repaired.

Steering rack in a car performs the function of transferring the driver's effort on the steering wheel to the wheel rods. The rails of modern cars are supplemented by amplifiers, mainly hydraulic and less often electric. Such amplifiers contribute to easier driving: the driver does not need to exert a lot of effort on the steering wheel, shocks and vibrations are not transmitted from the wheels to the steering wheel.

Video (click to play).

The design of the gear rack of the car includes the following elements:Image - Do-it-yourself steering rack repair Volvo 960

  • Aluminum crankcase. Inside it is a cavity with special protection;
  • Spring. It serves for reliable engagement of the gear and the teeth of the steering rack.
  • Drive gear. Mounted on bearings and located in the crankcase.
  • Bushing and restrictive ring. Contribute to the course of the steering rack in the desired interval.

The principle of operation of the Volvo steering rack is quite simple. The efforts of the driver directed to the steering wheel are transmitted to the rack through the shaft and gear, which is mounted on it. As a result, the rack moves in the right direction, the hydraulic booster oil is pumped through the piping and valve system into the required cavity, making it easier to slide the steering rack.

The ability to identify malfunctions in a car in time is, of course, very important, because a breakdown of the steering rack while driving can provoke quite serious consequences - the car becomes uncontrollable.

It is recommended to periodically inspect the steering rack for the following signs of malfunction:

  • Decreased hydraulic fluid in the reservoir. The reason may be the wear of the sealing glands.
  • Backlash when turning or knocking in the steering rack area. It is likely that the ball joint or the rack teeth themselves have worn out.
  • If it takes a lot of effort to turn the steering wheel, the shaft was bent.
  • When driving on rough roads, it may appear "beating" of the steering wheel. In this case, check the tips for damage.
  • Oil stains under the car signal that the seals in the power steering cylinder are worn out or the steering hoses need to be repaired.

Image - Do-it-yourself steering rack repair Volvo 960

Any of these signs should serve as a signal for repair work. In no case should you continue to ride in a car, especially at high speed.

There are several main reasons why the steering rack of a Volvo car can fail.

  • Driving on rough roads. Perhaps this is the main reason. Unfortunately, our roads really leave much to be desired, but if you really have to drive on bad roads, you need to take care of your car. Otherwise, soon the driver will hear a knock in the steering rack on the Volvo.
  • Harsh accelerations when the steering wheel is in the extreme position. You can't do that. The movement must be smooth.
  • Frequent rides on curbs can also damage the car rack.

It is necessary to carry out diagnostics of any malfunctions of the steering mechanism extremely carefully. Turn the wheel, pull the rods, and then shake the rail itself - this is not a diagnosis, but a direct road to the breakdown of your car.

Image - Do-it-yourself steering rack repair Volvo 960

If you hear something knocking under the hood while driving, you need to stop the car and try to turn the steering wheel to the sides with the car turned off, thereby checking the free play of the steering wheel. Increased play may be a signal of a worn inner rack. If you hear tapping at the extreme moments of play, the problem may be in the steering tips.

After that, you can visually assess the condition of the steering rack by looking under the hood. It is also worth checking the rubber anthers for damage.

Adjusting the steering rack makes sense only in the case of a small output in the rack and a relatively weak backlash. On the Volvo, you can tighten the steering rack, pressing the input shaft against the rack body. To do this, tighten the adjusting nut, thereby pressing the clamping sleeve with the help of a spring.

This should be done very carefully, with smooth movements, checking the steering wheel travel and the presence of play in the process. But it can be quite difficult to perform such a steering rack repair, for example, a Volvo 850 car. The hex-shaped adjusting nut in this model is located behind the subframe, which means that it will be impossible to get to it without removing the subframe.

In the event of any malfunctions in the steering mechanism, car service employees increasingly began to offer replacement of the steering rack in a Volvo car, rather than repair. Thereby guaranteeing high quality and durability of the mechanism. But in cases where such a solution to the issue does not suit financially, you can try to carry out repairs.

We will tell you how the steering rack of Volvo cars is repaired using the example of the S60 model.

Image - Do-it-yourself steering rack repair Volvo 960

Repair of the steering rack of Volvo s80, xc90, 940, s40 cars is carried out according to the same principle.

Experienced motorists recommend constantly monitoring the general condition of the steering rack, in particular, paying attention to protective anthers and changing them in time. Also, in order to avoid rapid wear of the hydraulic booster and an increase in the load on all elements of the steering gear and steering rack, do not spin the engine when the steering wheel is in its extreme position. This can also cause a breakdown of the seal in the hydraulic booster or contamination of the entire system.

It must be remembered that the best way to avoid malfunctions and save money on repairs is to carry out preventive maintenance and check the car. Replace worn parts on time. And if trouble has already occurred and repairs are inevitable, you should not put it off “for later” and continue to drive a car with a faulty steering rack, this can cause an accident.

  7. Replacement of worn parts (if necessary)
  8. Assembling and retesting the rack
  9. Installing the unit on a car
  10. Filling the liquid and checking the steering mechanism (the liquid is provided by the client or ours from 500 rubles)

Only when going through this repair procedure, we can guarantee the uninterrupted operation of the unit and give a guarantee of 6 months without mileage limitation.

You can get acquainted with the list of completed works and the repair procedure in the Completed Works section.

It often turns out that it’s not the rack that “knocks”, but the steering cardan, the price of which is only $ 95. Solving the problem in this situation will cost:
95 (part) + 20 (replacement) = $115.

If the rail really knocks or flows, on most Volvo models it can be sorted out, which also turns out to be much cheaper than replacing it with a new part (approximate prices are given in the table).

Unfortunately, the steering rack is not always repairable. Here are a few situations when the rail will have to be completely changed:

corroded steering shaft, no spare shaft;
the steering shaft is deformed (bent), there is no spare shaft;
cracked steering rack housing.

140 240 740 940 960 S90 - 200 (used rail) + 20 (installation) = 220 or 400 (new rail) + 20 (installation) = 420

The steering rack is one of the most important parts in the design of any car. Without a rail, it is impossible to control the vehicle, namely, to make a turn to the left or to the right. Damage to the steering rack can complicate or completely lead to the impossibility of driving.

In new cars, a power steering rack is installed, which makes it easier to control compared to conventional mechanics. At the same time, with the use of hydraulics, new malfunctions appear that appear over time.

Volvo steering rack failure is a problem that can manifest itself after 160 t. Km of run, depending on operation. The main faults are as follows:

  • Knock - noise
  • Steering wheel play
  • Leakage and drops of oil on the pavement under the car
  • Uneven force when turning the steering wheel
  • Vibration on the steering wheel
  • heavy steering wheel

The knock of the Volvo steering rack is quite common problem in mechanics and hydraulics. There is no single solution to this problem. There are several reasons why is the steering rack noisy and knocks. The first thing that comes to mind is the tip, or the tie rod is clogged. If everything is in order with them, you need to check if the bushing or beam is broken - a worm is paired.

Steering wheel play comes from a variety of factors that are interrelated. Basically, it all starts with a torn anther, which should protect the gear rack. As a result, moisture and small particles get on the rail, grinding it down and succumbing to corrosion. Therefore, it is always worth monitoring the condition of the anther, because its replacement will cost many times less than a complete repair of the steering rack.

Oil drops under the Volvo in the engine area can be caused power steering leak. Conversely, this can be caused by the wear of the anther. Dust gets on the gear shaft and grinds off the seals, which is why leakage occurs. The gear rack is also damaged, becoming unusable.

Once every 4-5 years, this fluid should be changed, but if you actively use the car, then at 3 years. You should not save on ATF oil, because in the future it can lead to big waste. Fluid leakage also occurs if the steering wheel is turned to the extreme position, the oil pressure increases and the temperature rises, which negatively affects the oil seals.

If you listen closely, you can hear the characteristic hum of the power steering. The noise of the pump occurs for several reasons, sometimes air enters the system or low-quality liquid due to the exhaustion of its resource. This sound is the first bell that requires replacement of the working fluid or repair of the pump itself. It is best to contact our service center Rostov-on-Don Malinovsky 9a as soon as possible, no matter what starts the problem that can lead to complete failure of the pump and its further unsuitability.

Uneven force when turning the steering wheel or turning the steering wheel in jerks, most likely, the bearings were damaged, they simply crumbled. This will require a complete disassembly of the steering rack and replacement of the bearing. The exact cause can naturally be determined only during diagnostics in our service center in the west.

The problem of a heavy steering wheel is associated with a breakdown of the power steering. In turn, this problem is likely to be caused by wear of the anther and dirt getting inside the steering rack. In this case need a complete cleaning and replacing the power steering fluid and most likely grinding the toothed shaft. Performing a real high-quality restoration of the steering rack requires certain skills. In our service center at Malinovsky 9a, we offer our services and give a guarantee for all work performed!

It is possible to accurately diagnose the problem of the steering rack only after disassembling and removing the system. To carry out a complete analysis of the rail requires a set of special tools and skills. We offer free diagnostics on special equipment. Do not trust garage craftsmen who promise to fix everything with just one screwdriver. Often the work is not completed to the end, which leads to an early re-breakdown.

We are also engaged in the restoration of the steering rack and spline mechanism Volvo. If you often drive in a straight line and turn a little, or do not unscrew the steering wheel to the extreme position, then the gear rack begins to wear out in the middle. For this reason, a knock and play of the steering wheel may appear, and then one tightening of the steering rack is not enough. Would need complete restoration of the gear shaft.

Restoration work requires not only a special tool, but also a machine for thorough polishing. It is best to contact our service center in Rostov-on-Don, where the masters have vast repair experience. Also our advantage is a narrow focus on the repair of Volvo steering racks.

*The cost of repairing the steering rack includes:

  • primary diagnosis
  • fault detection
  • replacement of all seals
  • repressing the piston on the main shaft (if required by the design feature)
  • replacement of teflon rings
  • replacement of rubber seals
  • grinding (in the presence of corrosion fragments on the shafts)
  • final check on the hydraulic stand

In case of non-repairability of the main shaft (non-removable corrosion, lack of teeth), distributor gearbox (non-removable corrosion, lack of teeth), wear of the steering rack inside the housing, damage to hydraulic lines, the cost of repairing the steering rack is negotiated additionally.

The Swedish company Volvo is rightfully considered the supplier of some of the most reliable cars on the planet. For this, she has been awarded more than a dozen awards. The build quality of the machines has been verified by dozens of crash tests. Despite this, they are just as not insured against ordinary breakdowns, like everyone else. Any equipment is characterized by wear and tear, so you should always be ready for a trip to a service center. The most common is the repair of the Volvo steering rack. This is because there are many connections in this node, and all of them fail over time.

  • Image - Do-it-yourself steering rack repair Volvo 960

The craftsmen in our service center carry out the repair of the Volvo steering rack according to a very simple principle. First, the entire part is disassembled into key components, then worn-out fragments are removed from there, and new spare parts from third-party manufacturers take their place. Such a simple procedure allows you to make a more durable part that looks better than new in operation. Volvo steering rack repair is not always possible. If the spare part is worn out to the limit, it will be easier to replace it. But this operation will cost much more, so it is better to visit the service at the first signs of a breakdown.

I just called one service, they suggested that it makes no sense to tighten them, you either need to restore them (70ls with a guarantee for half a year) and this option is not for long - or buy a restoration at the factory (expensive but angry).

Indeed, no one has tried to pull up?

I don’t know about the s60 specifically, but on the 940 the “tightening” after some time ended with this:

Volvo cars have been recognized many times as the safest in the world. To a large extent, this safety is ensured by the correct operation of the steering rack. At the same time, malfunctions of this important control unit can lead to an accident.

This article is intended to help you not to miss the moment when a small malfunction that needs to be repaired can turn into a replacement of the entire assembly or, even worse, lead to an emergency.

The content of the article:

Steering rack (or steering gear) - the main assembly of the steering mechanism of the car. It is with the help of the steering rack that the efforts applied to the steering wheel are converted into turning the wheels.

There are three types of steering racks - mechanical, hydraulic and electrical.

  1. Mechanical rails use in their work only the physical effort applied by the driver to turn the wheels.
Until the mid-90s of the XX century, almost all passenger cars of domestic production were equipped with this type of steering gearboxes. Turning the steering wheel in such machines is quite difficult.
In addition, the so-called “feedback” is very strong here - all vibrations, shocks, shocks are transmitted directly from the wheels, through the rack to the steering shaft and steering wheel.
  2. Hydraulic racks - the most common type of steering racks. The physical impact on the steering wheel is enhanced here with the help of a hydraulic power steering (GUR). When is Volvo Power Steering Pump Repair Needed?
Comfort when driving on rough roads, in this case, is much higher - the steering wheel does not strive to "jump out" of the hands. The effort applied by the driver to the steering wheel is reduced to a minimum.
  3. Electrical rails - work on the principle similar to hydraulic ones. However, the amplification here is provided by an electric motor.

There are several signs that you can tell if your Volvo steering rack is not in the best shape.

Let's look at them in order of clarity. That is, let's start with the most non-obvious and end with the most recognizable.

Now that you know the basic steering rack symptoms, the question arises by itself -

With due desire, in garage conditions, you can assemble a full-fledged sports car. Of course, if there is a very great interest, you can independently replace the steering rack with a Volvo.

However, it is time to ask yourself the question - is it worth it?

Let me tell you a story from my life.

At the beginning of the 2000s, at the dawn of his life as a car enthusiast, the author of these lines decided to replace the steering rack on his own, considering that the cost of the work that he was told in the auto repair shop was greatly overestimated. Fortunately, there was a friend-assistant nearby with a cozy garage and full breasts of self-confidence.

Work began early in the morning in order, according to calculations, to be in time for dinner.

After four hours of unsuccessful dismantling attempts, the "repairmen" cursed their self-confidence and frugality.

Two hours later, the most selective compliments flowed like a river to the manufacturers who designed the car so that it could not be repaired.

A couple of hours later, a friend's father appeared in the garage. The three of us began to think how to remove this hated steering rack.

As a result, by hook or by crook, they managed to pull her out only by six o'clock in the evening! Moreover, there are well-founded suspicions that the path along which she left her place is very far from the one that the car developers intended.

The rest of the evening and the next day were spent installing and adjusting the new rack. And about the wheel alignment, which was hardly adjusted in a specialized workshop after such a “repair” - probably, it’s not worth talking about.

It should be noted that this was a rather old car. But modern cars, especially such as Volvo, are much more complicated.

Therefore, if there are suspicions about the serviceability of the steering rack of your faithful assistant, you should not reinvent the wheel. It is better to go to a car service as soon as possible. Experienced specialists will make repairs quickly and - most importantly - efficiently. After all, they did this procedure more than once.

If you do not rush, and bring the gearbox to full wear, then it will have to be changed, not repaired. And this is much more expensive.

But the most important thing is driving a car with such a rail is simply dangerous!

Volvo steering rack repair in the Petrogur-Spb car service - the best and most profitable solution for car owners:

Domestic owners of VOLVO cars often do not attach importance to the history of the manufacturer. It is worth revealing a few facts before talking about the repair of the VOLVO steering rack.

  • "Volvo" is Latin for "I'm going"
  • The Volvo logo symbolizes the Roman god of war (Mars)
  • The company was originally a subsidiary of bearing manufacturer SKF.
  • Volvo owns the patent for the modern seat belt.
  • Volvo is a supplier of parts for space satellites

Irresponsibility. It is with this word that Petrogur-SPb auto mechanics characterize the main reason for the repair of the VOLVO steering rack. Indeed: driving through pits and bad roads, driving onto curbs and using the wrong oil can damage the steering rack mechanism.

When buying a European-made car, it is worth remembering that not a single plant will calibrate for Russian asphalt.

The steering racks of the Volvo S80 II are manufactured by Ford.Rail numbers: 1459747, 1462955, 1504781, 1514144, 1572577, 1749757, 1749762, 1749778, 1758591, 1789455, 1789460, 1789462, 1789466, 3800034

Steering racks S80 II have a completely different pedigree than their predecessors. After the conclusion of an alliance between Volvo and Ford, Mondeo-4 rails began to be installed on the S80 II. This, in turn, determined the list of malfunctions of the S80 II steering rack.

At one time, these steering racks occupied the top line in the ranking of manufacturability and consumer qualities. For example, an original technique for welding steel tubes to a steel crankcase. The rack housing is all steel - this ensures that there are no such malfunctions that plague some rails, such as wear of the distributor housing and wear of the cylinder housing. However, time has shown its shortcomings. Moreover, some of the shortcomings and possible malfunctions were incorporated at the factory in the design in accordance with the now fashionable principle of artificial resource limitation. So, every self-respecting modern automaker introduces a time bomb into the design of the car, which should work at a certain moment and cause an insignificant, but annoying breakdown. These are the “mines” we are dealing with.

The first weak point is the wear bushing

In appearance, everything is fine - the bushing rubs against the shaft rail through the Teflon tab, which has a fairly large area and is installed tightly at the factory. The aluminum sleeve itself has a self-centering design. The sleeve is inserted into the steel crankcase of the rail with a small gap and is locked with a spring ring, and during operation it jams in the crankcase and cannot move and knock.

However, the INSERT MATERIAL IS LOOSE AND NOT AS WEAR-RESISTANT as I would like.

For example, Toyota's Teflon tabs do not wear out even after 200,000 km. Allow high temperatures, chemically aggressive liquids (synthetic oils), shock loads.

The first thing Hydrolab does when repairing steering racks S80 II – tidies up the outer sleeve of the shaft-rack. Read how it's done here.

The second (and most important) weak point is the self-popping biscuit plug

Forums are full of discussions about some kind of “cork”, and in a scientific way - a plug of cracker for the S80 II steering rack.

What's the important detail? Now let's figure it out!

We disassemble the Volvo steering rack. And we find that the plug of the cracker is plastic! Please note that it is screwed at the factory into the “fit” using a special glue that guarantees complete tightness.

Next, a retaining ring with antennae falling into the grooves is glued onto it with glue - this is how the plug is fixed from turning and popping out.

As long as the rail is operated in normal mode, everything works fine. Problems begin if the power steering pump fails, the car is towed with the engine turned off, there are hits on the rail (curbs, pits) and finally if the owner decides replace tie rods on a car!

The design of the cracker and its cork is extremely weak and works to the limit. At any opportunity, the plug pops out, and the rail depressurizes with all the ensuing consequences. What happens if water gets into the rail, read the article The story about the steering rack boot or how to kill the rail quickly.

However, more often than not, the owner of the popping-out plug of the cracker remains unnoticed by the owner. Therefore, these rails have collected so many different faults in the header of the article.

The most common case leading to S80 II steering rack repair is an attempt to replace the steering rods without removing the rack from the car. On machines such as the S80 II, this does not work. During the unscrewing of the thrust, the shaft-rail tends to turn and the cracker and its plug simply squeeze out. Read here how to properly install traction.

Ford calculated the design in such a way that the cracker plug can be squeezed out even when the wheel hits an obstacle sharply or when excessive force is applied to the steering wheel on a muffled car.

The cracker itself is also made of plastic and wears out quickly.

Wear is visible both from the sides of the cracker, where it rubs against the crankcase, and from the side of the shaft-rail, which it presses.

Attempts to “tighten” the cracker (as they say, tighten the nut) again leads to the fact that the plug of the cracker breaks off and the rail is depressurized.

The cracker and plug of the S80 II steering rack are repaired at Hydrolab in the first place. The cork is replaced with a metal one. The design is improved, backlash, knocks and extrusion of the plug are excluded. The tightness is guaranteed. Read more here.

Is it worth it to change the steering rack plug yourself?

On the Internet, in clubs, home-made metal crackers are sold. Most often, these are turned parts - a threaded plug and a lock nut.

It's easy to buy - it's not easy to put correctly. First, you will need a special sealant (ordinary silicone does not guarantee tightness).

Secondly, it is not realistic to adjust the cracker on the machine correctly. He will either pull or hang out.

Thirdly, the wear of the cracker itself will remain and the rail will still knock.

And finally, the last - the most important! In most cases, the cracker squeezes out the cork even earlier. Moisture accumulates in the rail. Installing a new cracker plug without drying the entire rail leads to the same sad result as driving with the plug unscrewed - the rail will rot.

So is it worth it then to spend time and money on an independent replacement of the steering rack plug, or is it better to drive to the experts?
