DIY repair of steering tips VAZ 2109

In detail: do-it-yourself repair of VAZ 2109 steering tips from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.

The steering tips, as well as the ball joints on the VAZ 2109-2108, must be changed at regular intervals. Of course, if there are no signs of wear, knocks from the front suspension, then it is better not to go there. If symptoms of increased wear are heard, then new tips must be installed.

To carry out this repair with our own hands, we need the following tools and accessories:

The first step is to raise the car with a jack, or rather its front part, and then remove the wheel to gain more convenient access. Then with pliers we bend and pull out the cotter pin, which fixes the nut that secures the tip to the steering knuckle of the rack:

After that, you can unscrew the nut with a 19 key, and it is most convenient to use a union nut. To apply a more powerful lever, you can put a pipe on the end of the key, if necessary:

Then try to rip off the nut fixing the tip to the steering rod, for which you will need a 27 wrench:

If, instead of a nut, the entire coupling is unscrewed, then you will then have to remove it with it, after which, at the very end of the procedure, try to unscrew the tip on the spot.

Now we need a special puller for ball joints and other hinge joints. We insert one of its levers under the rubber band of the tip, and the other end should rest against the finger from below. This is clearly shown in the photo below:

Next, you need to turn the puller bolt until the steering tip finger pops out of its place:

If the nut on the rod has moved from its place, you can try to unscrew the tip. It is worth noting that you need to turn it clockwise:

New tips can now be purchased and replaced. The price of these parts for a VAZ 2109-2108 is about 600 rubles per pair. Keep in mind that they are different: that is, the right and left handpieces are different! The installation is carried out in the reverse order.

Replacing the steering tip with a VAZ 2109 will take literally half an hour, if you have the right tools. Even the presence of a pit is not necessary for the procedure.

A lot has already been said about how important it is to monitor the health of the steering. However, we will still focus on them. A small educational program about why the timely replacement of steering tips on the VAZ 2109 is so important.

First of all, safety. On the road, the wheel makes a huge amount of vertical and horizontal vibrations, the steering tip, the ball joint, the silent blocks, the wheel bearings - all this is under tremendous stress. Therefore, it may happen that the tip finger will simply rip out of the seat. Further, the consequences are unpredictable, it all depends on the speed of movement.

Now let's proceed directly to the instructions. First of all, you need to get long keys for 27 and 2. Speaking "long", we mean about 80 cm, not less, otherwise it is simply unrealistic to break the locking clutches.

If we change the right tip, then we turn the steering wheel to the left, if the left, then vice versa. In general, if it is possible to carry out operations with a removed wheel, then this is exactly what you should do. Using a 22 key, unscrew the nut fixing the tip in the bipod of the rack, then dry this tip with hammer blows.

Next, we open the hood, find the rods that go from the rail, after which we hold the clutch with a key of 24, and unscrew the nut with the other, by 27. On the right side, the nut is unscrewed to the front, and on the left - to the salon, this is worth remembering. Now we remove the old tip.We install a new one by screwing it about the same number of threads as the old one. After that, tighten the clutch locknut.

When driving, knocks appeared in the front suspension - a steering rod for replacement. We recommend monitoring this unit and checking it every 20-30 thousand km., Depending on wear and tear, change it in a timely manner. In this manual, we will consider how to properly remove and replace the steering rod and tip on the VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 with our own hands.

You will need: a new tie rod, a set of keys, a vice, a jack or a lift.

We jack the car, remove the wheel and take out the wire from the steering tip nut.

Next, press out the tip finger.

Then you need to unlock the tie rod nut.

We unscrew the thrust nut and loosen the adjacent one.

We take out the steering rod outward.

We fix the rod in a vice and unscrew the steering tip.

Remove the steering tip.

We change it to a new one and, with a new steering rod, we assemble the suspension in the reverse order.

Welcome!
The steering tips are the basis of the steering rod, they are made in the form of a hinge that is pressed into the body, this hinge is inserted into the hole of the pivot arm of the rack and when you turn the steering wheel, this hinge moves the wheel in the direction you need and thereby turns the car.

Note!
To replace the tips, you need to stock up on: A special puller that comes especially for ball joints, as well as all the keys that are in your arsenal and pliers with a screwdriver!

Summary:

Where is the steering head located?
As we have already said, it consists of a body and a ball joint, while the joint at the tip is inserted into the hole (indicated by a blue arrow), to easily find it, you will have to remove the wheel from the car and look at the telescopic rack, just below in the photo it was indicated by a red arrow , the location of the tie rod tip in the chassis of the vehicle.

When should you change the steering tip?
The tip has an anther, for clarity, we indicated it with a green arrow in the photo above, if this anther is torn, then immediately without thinking change the tip, even if in your opinion it is still in good condition, then after a while it will still come out out of order and the plague, the sooner you replace it, the better it will be, if the anthers are torn, dirt gets clogged into the hinge and water gets into, because of this, the grease is quickly washed out and instead of it dirt particles appear in the hinge, because of this there is a backlash at the steering wheel, it begins to vibrate and the car begins to respond much worse when you turn the steering wheel of the car.

Note!
The tips become unusable due to several reasons, the first is when the boot breaks, the second is from time to time, when driving at the ball joint, friction occurs between itself and the hole into which it is inserted (In the rack), well, and the third reason is not enough grease that the manufacturer did not really put in, or that just dried out and washed off from time to time!

Note!
Before changing the tip, make sure that this is really what your car needs, to check the tip for backlash, do the following operation, drive the car into the inspection hole and grab the steering rod with your hand (the steering tip is still on it) and shake the steering rod with your hand. (Down, up), while you will wobble the thrust, look at the ball joint of the steering tip, if it wobbles (Have play) then in this case change the steering tip, in the near future to a new one (Another tip, in exactly the same way check), if it turns out that both tips are in good working order and work normally, and there is still play at the steering wheel, then look at the steering rack, maybe it is to blame for this play!

Withdrawal:
one.Let us briefly explain how to replace the steering tip there is nothing complicated, especially when there is a puller at hand, well, let's start, first remove the wheel (For how to remove a wheel, read the article: "Changing a wheel on a car") from the car, then take grease WD-40 or something like it and brush the nut that secures the steering link joint to the swivel arm and, taking the pliers, remove the cotter pin that prevents this nut from turning away (It is indicated by the red arrow), and when it is removed, completely unscrew the nut and remove it (indicated by the blue arrow) and using the special. puller, press out the ball joint pin from the hole into which it enters (see the small photo) and then loosen the nut (indicated by the green arrow) with a wrench, due to which the tip is attached to the tie rod, then unscrew the tip by turning it counterclockwise by hand (When turning be sure to count how many revolutions the tip will make, tighten the new one by exactly the same amount).

Note!
If suddenly you need to change the boot at the steering tip or fill it with more grease, then you will need to remove it as follows, first the metal ring will need to be removed along the finger of the ball joint (see photo 1), then prying it with a screwdriver, remove the stopper which holds the boot on the hinge (see photo 2) and you can safely then remove the boot itself from the hinge and stuff the grease into the hinge, just reconnect the boot so that it fits into the groove and fasten it tightly so that no dirt gets under it moisture!
