It is possible to carry out minor repairs of tubeless tires (puncture up to 0.5 cm) with your own hands without even removing the tire from the disk. To do this, follow the instructions below.
Tubeless tires are allowed to be repaired in the manner described below. It will be possible to determine what type of tires is installed on the car by the shape of the nipple. Structurally, in products with a chamber, the nipple has a shape in the form of a cone or a cylinder. Tubeless tires are equipped with a nipple, the base of which has a rubber seal with a small rim to prevent air from escaping the wheel.
It is possible to check the presence of a chamber in the wheel by pressing the spool inward, if such a procedure can be performed, there is a chamber inside the product.
It can be difficult to establish the puncture site of a tubeless tire: the air slowly exits through the hole formed. To determine exactly where the tire is damaged will allow a soapy solution. To make it, dilute any foaming agent in a small amount of water. Then apply a soapy solution to the surface of the tire, bubbles form at the place of air leakage.
There are situations when, having processed the surface of the tire, the puncture site was not found: bubbles did not appear anywhere. Apply a soap solution around the nipple and along the rim of the fit of the tire to the rim. Reasons for air leakage:

Before starting repair work, make sure that the tire is tubeless. Then purchase a special repair kit for tubeless tires at a store or car market. It consists of:
Harnesses for repairing tires, which include reinforcing fibers and rubber.
File for cleaning and expanding the puncture hole. The tool is a file with a handle, round in shape, pointed at the end.
A special awl, its purpose is to install a tourniquet. The end of the awl has a special cut that allows you to leave the seal inside the tire.
Please note: the tools included in the set are equipped with special handles that come in various shapes: round or rectangular. Performing repairs, you will have to make an effort, so it is better to use a file and an awl with a specially shaped handle (shown in Figure 1).
pliers, with their help it will be possible to remove a nail, glass or bolt from the puncture site;
stationery knife, with its help it will be possible to cut off the excess part of the tourniquet.
Having decided to do the repair of tires with your own hands, follow the sequence:
Tubeless car tires can be repaired using a sealant. To do this, having found a foreign object on the surface of the tire, do not rush to remove the foreign material. Take a bottle filled with sealant, connect it to the valve, then pump the sealant into the wheel. After these procedures, remove the object that punctured the tire. At the same time, the air inside the tire will begin to come out, carrying the sealant with it, which will clog the hole formed.
Please note: when the pressure inside the wheel drops below 1 atmosphere, the sealant will not work: a flat tire below the specified limit must first be pumped up. Please note that the sealant will not work for a long time, it will last for 100 km. When driving on a repaired wheel in this way, the speed of the vehicle must not exceed 60 km/h. At a higher speed, the sealant will collapse, the tire will begin to descend.
Repairing tires with harnesses allows you to eliminate the puncture site. A tire repaired in this way is able to serve the full operational period specified by the tire manufacturer. The second repair option is not long-term, it will come in handy in a force majeure situation. Both options are simple, performed without the involvement of specialists.
Situations when a side cut has occurred on the tire are not uncommon. However, frequent car trips are an indispensable experience for the driver.
The kilometers traveled teach not only to drive well, but also to cope with emergency situations.
For example, a punctured tire is one of the most common problems on the road, which even a beginner can handle. But how to repair the side cuts of tires?
As a rule, such non-standard damage often causes problems even for professionals in their field, not to mention beginners.
Many motorists underestimate the danger of such damage and continue to drive a car.
Actually it is very dangerous. Even a small side cut can lead to serious problems.
Everything is simple here. With a side cut of the tire, the cord (the base of the tire) is damaged - its textile (metal) threads. Because of this, the product loses its rigidity and shape.
A hernia on the tire may also appear, and such a phenomenon contributes to the emergence of a huge number of negative factors affecting driving safety.
When driving on such a wheel, the latter may explode from hitting a small bump, which will inevitably lead to an accident. The consequences could be the worst.
Repairing such damage is a very difficult and thankless task, because it will still not work to restore the characteristics of the wheel even with a small amount of damage.
The only thing that is allowed is to use a “patched” tire as a spare wheel.
Before proceeding with the repair of a tire side cut, it is necessary to carefully inspect the surface, look at the type of tire and measure the damage. Only then can a decision be made on the maintainability of the structure.
To begin with, let's recall the types and features of modern tires.
For example, in radial tires, the cord is located perpendicular to the circumference of the product, which gives the car greater stability on the road.
The cord threads are located in the wheel independently of each other and solve the problem of providing strength and rigidity.
If even a small part of the threads is damaged, it is impossible to restore the previous tire parameters. Therefore, any repair work should be carried out temporarily - only until the tire is replaced.
In this respect, they are more reliable - in them the threads are arranged diagonally to each other, at an angle.
In this case, the side cut does not greatly affect the rigidity and shape of the product, because the load is evenly distributed over the entire surface of the cord. This leaves the camera unprotected.
But the maintainability of diagonal tires is offset by one big drawback - there are fewer and fewer such tires in stores, and they are not popular with motorists.
But, despite all the difficulties, most service stations take on the repair of side cuts in passenger car tires. At the same time, the masters are often confident in the restoration of the wheel.
Although, some criteria for "rejection" still exist.
For example, service station workers do not undertake the repair of tubeless tires :
longitudinal side cut if its size is more than 35 mm;
transverse side cut, if its value exceeds 25 mm.
If the wheel is with a chamber, then the above restrictions can be increased by 5-10 mm. At the same time, please note that torn cords could damage the car camera in several places.
Yes, and there is no guarantee that it remained intact at the time of the appearance of the main damage.
As for trucks, here the assessment is not based on size, but on the number of “torn” cord fibers.
For example, if more than ten threads are damaged, then it is pointless to mount the tire - it will not last long. Such wheels are thrown away and not restored.
Now let's take a closer look at how to properly repair tire side cuts in each case.
Car tires can be repaired in two stages.
At this step, the damage is filled with a special material - "raw rubber". Its feature is plasticity, which allows much faster and more efficient closing of existing damage.
Installation of a special patch.
The structure of the latter should be similar to the tire carcass and fit in size. Before starting the repair, it is necessary to remove all unnecessary items and degrease the area to be treated.
The patch is glued with a special glue, tightly pressed to the surface with a vise or other devices and held for 1-2 hours.
As soon as the patch is dry, it is necessary to pump up the wheel and balance it.
The last step is to put the tire in place and mount the wheel.
Truck tires are most often not repaired on the road - it is very dangerous, inefficient and time consuming.
As a rule, drivers install a spare tire, and tire side cuts are repaired by professionals using electric vulcanizers - special corner devices.
Repair of a tube tire on the road is carried out in several ways.
If the tire and chamber are damaged, then a special aerosol, which is sold in automotive stores, will come in handy.
The repair method is very simple. To begin with, the wheel is placed on a jack, then the can is inserted into the nipple and a certain volume of its contents is injected.
In this case, the wheel must be turned so that the composition not only evenly covers the entire inner surface, but also “seals” the side cut.
But this option is only suitable for small damage located close to the base of the tire.
Be sure to inspect the damaged area from the inside for any protruding threads that could damage the camera. To prevent this from happening again on the road, they must be carefully bitten off with wire cutters to the very base.
If there is a cut on the tire (without damaging the camera), you can use a special rubber patch.
The advantage of this method is simplicity, because repair work is carried out without disassembling the wheel (again, do not forget about the metal cord threads).
With a side cut on a tubeless tire, there are two ways to repair it.
You will need a spiral awl (you can clean the hole with it), a tool for applying the tourniquet, glue and the tourniquet itself.
You need to act in this order :
- firstly, the slot in the tire is enlarged with an awl or a screwdriver (it is necessary to act in such a way as not to damage the cord);
- secondly, a small amount of prepared glue is applied to the screwdriver to get the latter inside the tire;
- thirdly, a tourniquet lubricated with glue is inserted into the hole in such a way that a loop is created in diameter larger than the cut itself. That's all.
By the way, this method is effective for a regular puncture, but with a minor side cut, it can also come in handy.
Do not forget to cut off the rest of the tourniquet.
A special radial patch copes with a wide variety of injuries - hernias, delamination, cuts and other problems.
The advantage of such a patch is high resistance to high temperature, elasticity and reliability. The product can be used for both cold and hot curing.
In case of damage to one or more cords, it is desirable to remove the thread or at least its section.
For greater effectiveness, the patch must be attached on both sides of the tire and after thorough cleaning, which is difficult to do on the road.
There are options for repairing a side cut in a hurry and are actively used by experienced motorists, but with such damage it is better not to tempt fate.
The best way is to install a spare wheel, and take the “wounded” tire to a service station for repair (if you have the necessary amount in your wallet, buy a new one).
Let's see how such complex work is done by real masters of their craft, in well-equipped workshops and on specialized equipment.
For a better understanding, consider the work of the wizard step by step. Perhaps such detailing will allow you to better repair the wheel with your own hands.
So, tire repair is carried out in several stages.
An existing cut is measured.
Its character and size are measured. If the obtained indicators are not more than the norms that we talked about above, then the wheel is disassembled for further repair.
If the damage is larger than acceptable, then the motorist is recommended to fork out for a new purchase.
Remember that a good master will not take on a job and risk the life of a client for a small profit.
We make a more common shape.
For ease of repair, the side cut is given a more frequent shape. This is done with the help of special nippers.
Marks are applied to the tire in certain places, which show the place where the cleaning will be done and where the reinforced patch will be placed.
The next step is cleaning the damaged surface with a drill. This is very important, because with poor processing, the repair will be ineffective.
After cleaning the problem area, it is degreased and covered with a special cement composition.
Next, the master cuts rectangular patches from raw rubber, puts them inside the tire and vulcanizes.
After the cement has completely dried, the patch is glued to the site of tire damage. For greater reliability, it is desirable to cover the edges of the patch with a sealant.
The last step is balancing the wheel and installing it in its original place.
After the restoration of the tire, it is forbidden to immediately give a large load - the break-in should be carried out gradually.
Repairing tire side cuts is a very complicated and, in fact, useless undertaking. Remember that even with minor damage, recovery should only be a temporary measure.
At the first opportunity, it is better not to save money and buy a new tire. This will require little cost, but it will increase overall safety, save health or even life.

In ancient times, there was GOST 5170-73 "First-aid kits for the repair of pneumatic tires." What components were not in these first-aid kits! And a fungus, and a grater with a band-aid, and a roller ... And now each manufacturer decides for himself what exactly to put in his kit.
Let's check what the descendants of those travel kits are capable of. Pushed to decisive action editorial Grant, one of the wheels of which has expired. Instead of a tire changer, we visited several shops where we purchased 16 different tubeless tire repair kits. The spread of prices is sevenfold, although the principle of operation is the same. After detecting a puncture, you need to remove the culprit of the trouble (screw, nail), then expand the hole and firmly insert the folded rubber flagellum into it. The nuances of technology and tools may vary, but in general, the repair algorithm is exactly the same.
Having repaired the tire, which met the self-tapping screw on the road, we decided to test all 16 repair kits on the poor thing. However, in the end, only 13 stab wounds were inflicted on her, since three sets were rejected at once: the flagella in them are frankly bad, instantly torn in the hands.
The instruments also differ quite a lot. So, the cute handle in the CityUp CA-793 set managed to turn around relative to the sting at the first attempt to get inside the tire.
Note that in some sets there are no “pickers” provided, and in some places there is no glue. And the names of the instruments are different for almost all manufacturers - in the explanations we give exactly the “branded” version.
A tire with so many holes in the tread part passed the test of running at speeds of over a hundred for a couple of weeks without losing a drop of precious air. For the sake of the experiment, we did not even cut off a few ponytails - and everyone resisted. A small puncture in the sidewall was also managed with the help of a flagellum. Although the reliability of sealing is noticeably lower than in the case when the tourniquet is held in a thick (even for a used tire) tread layer.
Towards the end, they conducted another test - a kind of "household": they pierced the sidewall of the tire, like some kind of bully with a knife or a screwdriver. We were no longer engaged in comparative tests, but simply fought for survivability. By the way, the same damage occurs, for example, when the tire makes hard contact with a curb or a sharp edge of a pit. Such a temporary repair is a priori more difficult: the sidewall is thinner than the tread, and therefore it is more difficult for the flagellum to stay in the hole.
Equipment: spiral awl, tool for installing harnesses, raw rubber strips (5 pieces), adhesive activator
The spiral awl destroys the cord - when installed, a crackling of breaking threads is heard. However, the repaired wheel drives successfully.
Equipment: a tool for stripping and forming a hole, an awl with an eye, reinforced plaits (5 pieces), glue
The beautiful handle of the rasp turned right away - the set can be removed from the tests. Okay, we took an analogue of a “picker” from another set ... As a result, the wheel was repaired, but it’s hard to advise buying such a first-aid kit.
Equipment: Twisted tip tool, eye tool, raw rubber activator adhesive, raw rubber strips (8 pieces), cutter
The spiral awl is good, the handles are comfortable. Note the presence of a cutter in the kit - it is not in other kits. I liked the first aid kit, but it's pricey.
Equipment: tool with a twisted tip, a tool with an eye, an activator adhesive for raw rubber, raw rubber flagella (3 pieces)
I didn’t like the picker: the cord breaks. But the wheel was still fixed.
Equipment: twisted tip tool, eye tool, wet rubber activator adhesive, plaits (5 pcs)
A tool with a hole like the eye of a needle has a too wide groove. Nevertheless, the set has stood the test.
Equipment: a tool for stripping and forming a hole, an awl with an eyelet for installing a tourniquet, reinforced cords (5 pieces), glue
The inexpensive kit coped with the task successfully, demonstrating the best value for money.
Equipment: rasp for cleaning and forming a hole, awl with an eye, reinforced braids (5 pieces), glue
The handle is poorly made. The glue feels very watery. However, it works.
Equipment: lug tool, wet rubber activator adhesive, conical black plugs (6 pieces)
Stepped "wedges" broke almost immediately. Failed.
Equipment: eye tool, raw rubber strips (10 pieces), activator glue
The set failed rather quickly: weak, unreinforced strips of raw rubber tore at the first attempt to shove them with the included tool into the workplace. Failed!
Equipment: pressure gauge, rasp, eye tool, repair harnesses (10 pieces), glue, 4 caps, 4 spools, universal key for cleaning valve threads, 10 chamber patches
The most expensive, but also the most complete set in our selection. The kit coped with the puncture. However, the tool is inconvenient. And most of the content will not be needed by everyone.
Equipment: rasp, needle tool, repair strips (3 pieces), glue
Glue is liquid, like water. But the wheel was repaired pretty quickly.
Equipment: tool for stripping and forming a hole, an awl with an eye for harnesses, harnesses for repairs (5 pieces)
There is no glue included. However, the set fulfilled its immediate function.
Equipment: eye tool, long black "self-vulcanizing" cords (4 pieces)
Glue is not included in the kit. The straps appear to be very thin. There is no tool for preparing the hole in the kit - you have to act immediately with a “needle”. However, we completed the sealing of the hole.
Equipment: lug tool, wet rubber activator adhesive, conical red plugs (6 pieces)
Red step-shaped "gags" are torn even before they are installed in the tire. Failed.
Equipment: spiral file, awl with eye, plaits (3 pieces), glue
Inexpensive set successfully coped with the task.
Equipment: file tip tool, eye tool, raw rubber bands (5 pieces), activator glue
The sting of the “picking” tool is too thin. But the wheel was repaired.
Of the listed kits, we highlight the Titan T-609 for 130 rubles - at an affordable price, it is equipped with a set of tools that did not cause us any complaints.
Separately, we note DoneDeal DD0320 for 540 rubles - the only set in which a cutter is provided to cut off the ends of the bundles sticking out of the tire. If not for the price, he would be a champion.
The most general recommendations are as follows: the flagella should be thick and reinforced, the “picker” should not be too “toothy”, but glue is still needed.
We determine the place of the puncture. If an external examination does not help, immerse the wheel in water or, at worst, douse it with water to detect air bubbles. Sometimes for this you need to increase the pressure to 2-3 bar. Having found a puncture, we mark it. Pliers extract the culprit.
We take the tool [1] for stripping and holes (colloquially - “picking tool”), set it to the puncture site and release the handle - we are trying to determine the direction of the puncture by the angle of inclination.
We apply a layer of glue to the surface of the “picker” (if it is present in the repair kit) and first screw it all the way into the tire, and then pull it out. The operation must be repeated two or three times. On the last pass, leave the tool in the recessed position.
We take a tourniquet and install it in the eye of an awl (it is also called a “needle”). We apply glue to the surface of the bundle.
We take out the tool for stripping and shaping and quickly drive an awl with a tourniquet into the hole [2] . The ends of the bundle must remain on the surface.
We take out the awl - the tourniquet should remain in the hole.
Same tire, inside view [3] . Captured with a hidden camera...
We inflate the wheel and check the tightness with water or at least by ear.
We cut the ends of the bundle sticking out from the outside flush with the surface of the tire tread [4] .
Use only "classic" flagella reinforced with synthetic threads. Outwardly, they resemble a twisted rope impregnated with a rubber-like composition. Do not use any conical plugs or strips without reinforcement, otherwise you will cry.
It is advisable to choose a "picker" with a T-shaped handle. Otherwise, calluses are guaranteed.
We do not recommend using sharp, rasp cleaners for repairs. They almost always break the cord.
Before starting repairs, the wheel must be pumped up to at least 0.5–1.0 bar.
If you are in doubt about the quality of your repair, move the repaired wheel back.
If a puncture is discovered while driving, and immediate repair is not possible, do not rush to remove a nail or self-tapping screw sticking out of the tire. As long as it is in place, the tire will not deflate as quickly. It is better to pump up a punctured wheel from time to time before a full repair begins.
Remember that with the presence of glue in the kit, the installation of the flagellum becomes easier, and the chances of a long service life are higher.
If the kit has been lying in the trunk for a long time and the glue has dried up, you can use gasoline instead (but not diesel fuel).
