Do-it-yourself CV joint repair for Niva Chevrolet driveshaft

In detail: do-it-yourself repair of a drive shaft CV joint for a Niva Chevrolet from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.

Today we have a Chevrolet Niva car, produced in 2012, for repair, on which it is necessary to replace the joint of the propeller shaft. The problem with the CV joint arose due to a torn anther, the owner of the car did not notice this in time, as a result, road dust and dirt got there, and unpleasant sounds appeared when driving.

We get to work, remove the cardan by unscrewing 4 nuts on the bridge on each side (key 13), remove part of the protection. For the convenience of work, the longitudinal jet thrust was unscrewed. We dismantle the gimbal.

Before starting the repair, a Cardan repair kit was purchased, its number in the spare parts catalog: 21214-2201160. The kit includes a boot, grease, separator, two clamps, new nuts, engraver, plugs, stopper and assembly instructions.

Remove the plug using a screwdriver:

Remove the external fixation stopper. From the repair kit, we first install the clamp, then the boot, add the lubricant:

We put on the stopper, while its dimensions did not coincide a little, we had to go to the turner. We take the separator, remove the fixing clamps from it and put it on. We stuff the grease into the separator, in general it was not enough from the repair kit, I had to add a little of my own. We put the cardan in place.

We carry out the work on a viewing ditch or overpass. During operation, you will need to turn the drive shaft, therefore, put the machine in neutral and release the parking brake lever. It is possible to hang the machine on one post from the front or rear (depending on which shaft needs to be removed). In this case, you do not have to roll the car to turn the shaft.

The removal procedure for the front and rear drive shafts is the same. We install an adjustable stop under the transfer case. Using the "13" head with an extension cord, we unscrew the four nuts securing the side brackets of the transfer case suspension and two nuts of the cross member of the rear bracket of the transfer case.

We lower the transfer case on the stop so that it comes off the mounting studs.

Turning the shaft with an open-end wrench "13", in turn, unscrew the four nuts securing the shaft to the drive axle flange.

The nuts are equipped with Teflon inserts to prevent spontaneous loosening. It is recommended not to allow repeated use of nuts and promptly replace them with new ones.

To remove the nuts, insert the mounting paddle into the gap between the CV joint and the flange, then press the CV joint so that it slightly moves along the shaft splines and allows you to remove the unscrewed nuts.

Then we squeeze the CV joint with two mounting blades so that the fastening pins come out of the holes in the drive axle flange.

The transfer case, removed from the mounting studs, allows this to be done. If you do not free the transfer case, then the free play of the splined joints of both CV joints will not be enough.

Holding the drive shaft with our free hand, unscrew the four nuts securing the shaft to the transfer case flange ...

Install the drive shaft in reverse order.

As a car from the class of SUVs, the Chevrolet Niva, respectively, is equipped with all-wheel drive. But how, if not a cardan transmission, torque can be transmitted from the transfer case to the wheels. Today we will consider the complete picture of the rear cardan of a Chevrolet Niva car, its features, structure, how it is replaced if faulty breakdowns occur.

The cardan drive is a hollow steel tube. The metal thickness of the tube is 1 to 2 mm. This tube is welded on both sides:

The fork of the second hinge is connected to the splined tip and is put on it. Thus, a splined connection is provided. This connection is necessarily sealed with a gland, which is installed on the slide fork.

So, the torque on the Chevrolet Niva car is transmitted through cardans (front and rear), but we are only interested in the rear. On the Chevrolet Niva, the design of both the front and rear universal joints is almost the same, the difference lies only in the length of the device.

On restyled models, the design of the propeller shaft has an improved look, and on models since 2010, the Chevrolet Niva has been equipped with a drive shaft with hinges of equal angular ends. The components of the rear universal joint of the Chevrolet Niva models up to 2010 and the CV joint shaft of models from 2010 are shown in the photo below.

Image "A" shows a steel base called a shaft (2). On both sides at the ends there are crosses, connected on one side by a shaft flange (1) and a sliding fork flange (4). There is also a sliding fork (3). On the restyled models, the cardan design has already acquired a distinctive appearance from the earlier modifications of the Chevy Niva, and is a shaft with hinges of equal angular velocities (B). The image shows that the shaft consists of a tube (7), the SHRUS device itself (5) on both sides and, of course, anthers. The boot is designed to protect the connection from getting inside not only dust, but also water and dirt. It also keeps the grease from flowing out.

The operability check is carried out on the engaged neutral gear of the PP box. The car is driven onto an overpass or inspection pit and shoes are placed under the wheels so that the car can move without rolling off the overpass. We proceed to verification activities. The check is carried out for both types of structures:

  1. External examination. All joints are inspected, whether there are any loosening of the bolt tightening, in what condition the boot is.
  2. Then, with both hands, the shaft is grasped on the side where the connections are checked, and the shaking is carried out with sharp movements. If there is a slight backlash, then the design is faulty. There should be no backlash.
  3. With sharp movements, it is necessary to turn the shaft around its axis of rotation, while holding the plug-flange of the hinge with one hand. There should be no circumferential gaps.
