Do-it-yourself chevrolet niva CV joint repair

In detail: do-it-yourself repair of a Chevrolet Niva driveshaft joint from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.

Today we have a car Chevrolet Niva (Chevrolet Niva), 2012 of release, on which it is necessary to replace the driveshaft CV joint, for repair. The problem with the CV joint arose due to a torn anther, the owner of the car did not notice this in time, as a result, road dust and dirt got there, and unpleasant sounds appeared during movement.

Getting to work, remove the gimbal, unscrewing 4 nuts on the bridge on each side (key 13), remove part of the protection. For the convenience of work, longitudinal jet thrusts were unscrewed. We dismantle the cardan.

Before starting the repair, a Cardan repair kit was purchased, its number in the spare parts catalog: 21214-2201160. The kit comes with a boot, grease, separator, two clamps, new nuts, engravers, plugs, a stopper and assembly instructions.

Using a screwdriver, remove the plug:

We remove the stopper of external fixation. From the repair kit, first install the clamp, then the boot, add lubricant:

We put on a stopper, while its dimensions did not match a little, I had to go to the turner. We take the separator, remove the fixing clamps from it and put it on. We fill the grease into the separator, in general, it was not enough from the repair kit, I had to add a little of my own. We put the cardan in place.

We carry out work on a viewing ditch or overpass. During operation, you will need to rotate the drive shaft, so you should put the machine in neutral and release the parking brake lever. You can hang the machine on one rack in front or behind (depending on which shaft you need to remove). In this case, you do not have to roll the car to turn the shaft.

The procedure for removing the front and rear drive shafts is similar. We install an adjustable stop under the transfer case. With a “13” head with an extension, we unscrew the four nuts securing the side brackets of the transfer case suspension and two nuts of the cross member of the rear bracket of the transfer case.

We lower the transfer case on the stop so that it comes off the mounting studs.

Turning the shaft with an open-end wrench “by 13”, we unscrew in turn the four nuts securing the shaft to the flange of the drive axle.

The nuts are equipped with Teflon inserts designed to prevent spontaneous loosening. It is recommended not to allow repeated use of nuts and to replace them with new ones in a timely manner.

To remove the nuts, insert a mounting blade into the slot between the CV joint and the flange, then press the CV joint so that it moves slightly along the splines of the shaft and allows you to remove the unscrewed nuts.

Then, with two mounting blades, we press the CV joint so that the mounting studs come out of the holes in the drive axle flange.

The transfer box removed from the mounting studs allows this to be done. If you do not release the transfer case, then the free play of the spline connections of both CV joints will not be enough.

Holding the drive shaft with your free hand, unscrew the four nuts securing the shaft to the transfer case flange ...

Install the drive shaft in reverse order.

Being a car from the SUV class, Chevrolet Niva, respectively, is equipped with all-wheel drive. But what if not a cardan transmission can transmit torque from the transfer case to the wheels. Today we will consider the complete picture of the rear cardan of the Chevrolet Niva car, its features, structure, how the replacement is carried out if there are faulty breakdowns.

The cardan gear is a steel hollow tube. The thickness of the metal of the tube is from 1 to 2 mm. This tube is welded on both sides:

The fork of the second hinge is connected to the splined tip and put on it. Thus, a spline connection is provided. This connection must be sealed with an oil seal, which is installed on the slip fork.

So, the torque on a Chevrolet Niva car is transmitted through cardans (front and rear), but we are only interested in the rear. On the Chevrolet Niva, the design of both the front and rear cardans is almost the same, the difference is only in the length of the device.

On restyled models, the design of the driveshaft has an improved look, and on models since 2010, the Chevrolet Niva is equipped with a drive shaft with hinges of equal angular endings. The components of the Chevrolet Niva rear cardan of models until 2010 and the CV joint shaft of models from 2010 are shown in the photo below.

The image "A" shows the steel base, called the shaft (2). On both sides at the ends there are crosses connected on one side by a shaft flange (1) and a sliding fork flange (4). There is also a sliding fork (3). On restyled models, the cardan design has already acquired a distinctive appearance from earlier modifications of the Chevy Niva, and is a shaft with constant velocity joints (B). The image shows that the shaft consists of a tube (7), the CV joint device itself (5) on both sides and, of course, anthers. The boot is designed to protect the connection from not only dust, but also water and dirt. It also keeps grease from leaking out.

The performance test is carried out on the included neutral transmission of the PP box. The car is driven onto a flyover or viewing hole and placing shoes under the wheels so that the car can move, but does not roll off the flyover. Let's get to the testing. The check is carried out for both types of structures:

  1. External inspection. All joints are inspected, if there are any loosening of the bolts, in what condition the anther is.
  2. Then, with both hands, the shaft is clasped on the side where the connections are checked, and the rocking is carried out with sharp movements. If a small backlash is inherent, then the design is faulty. There should be no backlash.
  3. With sharp movements, it is necessary to turn the shaft around the axis of its rotation, while holding the fork-flange of the hinge with one hand. There should be no circumferential gaps.
