Today we have a car Chevrolet Niva (Chevrolet Niva), 2012 of release, on which it is necessary to replace the driveshaft CV joint, for repair. The problem with the CV joint arose due to a torn anther, the owner of the car did not notice this in time, as a result, road dust and dirt got there, and unpleasant sounds appeared during movement.
Getting to work, remove the gimbal, unscrewing 4 nuts on the bridge on each side (key 13), remove part of the protection. For the convenience of work, longitudinal jet thrusts were unscrewed. We dismantle the cardan.
Before starting the repair, a Cardan repair kit was purchased, its number in the spare parts catalog: 21214-2201160. The kit comes with a boot, grease, separator, two clamps, new nuts, engravers, plugs, a stopper and assembly instructions.
We remove the stopper of external fixation. From the repair kit, first install the clamp, then the boot, add lubricant:
We put on a stopper, while its dimensions did not match a little, I had to go to the turner. We take the separator, remove the fixing clamps from it and put it on. We fill the grease into the separator, in general, it was not enough from the repair kit, I had to add a little of my own. We put the cardan in place.

We carry out work on a viewing ditch or overpass. During operation, you will need to rotate the drive shaft, so you should put the machine in neutral and release the parking brake lever. You can hang the machine on one rack in front or behind (depending on which shaft you need to remove). In this case, you do not have to roll the car to turn the shaft.
The procedure for removing the front and rear drive shafts is similar. We install an adjustable stop under the transfer case. With a “13” head with an extension, we unscrew the four nuts securing the side brackets of the transfer case suspension and two nuts of the cross member of the rear bracket of the transfer case.
We lower the transfer case on the stop so that it comes off the mounting studs.
Turning the shaft with an open-end wrench “by 13”, we unscrew in turn the four nuts securing the shaft to the flange of the drive axle.
The nuts are equipped with Teflon inserts designed to prevent spontaneous loosening. It is recommended not to allow repeated use of nuts and to replace them with new ones in a timely manner.
To remove the nuts, insert a mounting blade into the slot between the CV joint and the flange, then press the CV joint so that it moves slightly along the splines of the shaft and allows you to remove the unscrewed nuts.
Then, with two mounting blades, we press the CV joint so that the mounting studs come out of the holes in the drive axle flange.
The transfer box removed from the mounting studs allows this to be done.If you do not release the transfer case, then the free play of the spline connections of both CV joints will not be enough.
Holding the drive shaft with your free hand, unscrew the four nuts securing the shaft to the transfer case flange ...
Install the drive shaft in reverse order.
Torque is transmitted to the front wheels through the drives.
The Chevrolet Niva front wheel drive consists of two constant velocity joints (CV joints) connected by a shaft.
The connection of the shaft with the hinges is splined; from longitudinal movement, the shaft is fixed in the hinge with a thrust and lock rings.
The splined shank of the outer CV joint of the Chevrolet Niva is connected to the wheel hub and secured with a bearing nut, and the inner one is connected to the side gear in the front axle gearbox.
Each hinge consists of a body, separator, inner race and six balls. The latter are placed in the grooves of the body and clip.
In the outer CV joint of the Chevy Niva, these grooves are made along the radius, due to which it can transmit torque at large angles.
The grooves in the inner joint are straight, which allows the parts to move in the longitudinal direction, lengthening or shortening the drive (this is necessary to compensate for the mutual movements of the suspension and the front axle gearbox), and deviate at small angles.
Inside the cage there is a splined hole for connection with the drive shaft.

The details of each Chevrolet Niva CV joint are made with high precision, the balls of one sorting group are selected individually for each joint.
Therefore, it is unacceptable to replace individual parts, and before disassembling, their relative position should be noted. SHRUS-4 grease is placed in the hinge before assembly.
The tightness of the CV joint hinge Chevy Niva - an indispensable condition for its reliable operation - is ensured by protective rubber covers.
The cover with its ends is put on the hinge body and the drive shaft and secured with clamps.
It is allowed to use only special clamps with a smooth inner surface and no protruding parts.
The outer CV joint cover is additionally protected by a plastic casing.
Dirt-reflecting rings are pressed onto the bodies of the inner and outer hinges.
It is not allowed to replace individual parts of the CV joint, with the exception of the boot, clamps, casing, as well as the retaining, thrust and dirt-reflecting rings.

A grenade in a Chevrolet Niva car is a constant velocity joint. It is called a grenade due to its similarity in appearance to a military device. In fact, a grenade is a CV joint. The purpose of the CV joint in the car: ensuring the transmission of torque at angles of rotation relative to the axis of 70 degrees. A CV joint is also called a hinge. Cars use CV joints in the drive wheel drive system.
A little about the history of the grenade. After cars with a front-wheel drive mechanism began to be produced, the operation of this drive was carried out using conventional cardan joints. However, the work of the hinge, with this principle of operation, was loaded. During the turn of the car, the outer hinge worked in a difficult position - with angles of 30-35 degrees. At angles over 10 degrees, the car lost power. Plus, the hinges had a short service life, the tires of the drive wheels wore out, and the transmission shaft worked with a huge load. Such problems contributed to the invention of a special joint (CV joint), which transmitted rotation evenly regardless of the angle between the connected shafts.
This device is used to transmit engine torque. The transmission is carried out from the gearbox to the drive wheels, often the front ones. Due to this transmission, rotation occurs at the same speed, taking into account the fact that there is an angle between the shafts. In a Niva Chevrolet car, there are two types of grenades - external and internal. But, like any part of a car, grenades have their own specific service life, which also sometimes ends. And it's time to repair or change the hinges. Let us first consider the main possible causes of breakdowns.
There are not so many reasons why the CV joint ceases to function.
Wear of the rubbing parts of the mechanism due to a long service life. This is the main reason for the breakdown of any parts. But this is good if the part needs to be repaired after 100,000 km of run, and not earlier. But there are times when a new car breaks down.
Wrong driving. But here, most likely, sloppy driving. Bad driving can be caused by: - sharp rotation of the steering wheel in different directions; - frequent driving over bumps at high speed; - sharp inversion of the steering wheel over 60 degrees. In this position of the steering wheel, the part experiences maximum loads.
Entry of dust, water and dirt into the device. This cause is also common and contributes to the failure of the hinge in a matter of days after the ingress of foreign substances. The hit is due to damage to the anther. Anthers tend to burst or crack during operation. It is extremely difficult to detect damage to the anther, because for this it is necessary to carry out constant monitoring, which is almost unrealistic.
The grenade consists of moving parts, which, depending on the operation, are erased or broken. Therefore, CV joints must be replaced with new ones. Only the device on which damage to the anther is noticed, and the dirt has not yet had time to get inside, is subject to repair. But such cases occur very rarely. In addition, the price of the original device for Shevik is not so high.
How to determine the malfunction of a grenade? Determining a CV joint malfunction on a car is quite simple. To do this, while driving, turn the steering wheel all the way to the right, and then to the left. At this time, with the extreme right or left position of the steering wheel, a crack or crunch is heard from under the wheels, then the hinges need to be replaced. Moreover, it is necessary to find out exactly whether it is necessary to replace one hinge or all.
To install a new grenade, you must first remove the old worn one. Consider the steps for replacing a grenade. How to remove the axle shaft from a Chevrolet Niva car can be found on the Internet and watch a video. After the axle shaft with the grenade is removed from the car, you must proceed to the following steps:
We clamp the axle shaft in a vise so that it is convenient to work with a grenade.
The worn boot is removed from the grenade by cutting or turning it outward with the inside.
With the help of a hammer, the CV joint is knocked out from the axle shaft. This is done by tapping the grenade with a hammer.
After the grenade is removed, the old anther is removed and all the teeth of the CV joint half shaft are cleaned. You can even rinse with gasoline and grease with Litol.
Installed a new grenade. The price of a new grenade assembly ranges from 1000 to 1200 rubles. Sold mostly with boot and grease inside.
First, the boot is threaded onto the axle shaft, and then the grenade is fixed. A click indicates the correct installation of the CV joint.
Anther is clamped with clamps. The replacement process is complete.
Torn boot, needs to be replaced
By the same principle, you can repair a grenade. To do this, it is necessary to remove the worn boot, clean and rinse the hinge from the inside with gasoline and clean it with a stream of compressed air.
Repair is carried out if a little dust or dirt has got inside the CV joint. If the internal parts of the CV joint are damaged, then the grenade cannot be repaired.
In fact, this is not a repair, but a regular boot replacement. It is only necessary to clean the hinge from the inside, lubricate it with special grease and install a new anther. The process of repairing the damaged anther on the grenade is over.
The price of the new original grenade is already known, but there are cheaper versions of CV joints on the market. These are poor quality materials that will last a short time. The price of a new boot, which is sold along with lubricant, costs about 250-500 rubles.
