Today we have a Chevrolet Niva car, produced in 2012, for repair, on which it is necessary to replace the joint of the propeller shaft. The problem with the CV joint arose due to a torn anther, the owner of the car did not notice this in time, as a result, road dust and dirt got there, and unpleasant sounds appeared when driving.
We get to work, remove the cardan by unscrewing 4 nuts on the bridge on each side (key 13), remove part of the protection. For the convenience of work, the longitudinal jet thrust was unscrewed. We dismantle the gimbal.
Before starting the repair, a Cardan repair kit was purchased, its number in the spare parts catalog: 21214-2201160. The kit includes a boot, grease, separator, two clamps, new nuts, engraver, plugs, stopper and assembly instructions.
Remove the external fixation stopper. From the repair kit, we first install the clamp, then the boot, add the lubricant:
We put on the stopper, while its dimensions did not coincide a little, we had to go to the turner. We take the separator, remove the fixing clamps from it and put it on. We stuff the grease into the separator, in general it was not enough from the repair kit, I had to add a little of my own. We put the cardan in place.

We carry out the work on a viewing ditch or overpass. During operation, you will need to turn the drive shaft, therefore, put the machine in neutral and release the parking brake lever. It is possible to hang the machine on one post from the front or rear (depending on which shaft needs to be removed). In this case, you do not have to roll the car to turn the shaft.
The removal procedure for the front and rear drive shafts is the same. We install an adjustable stop under the transfer case. Using the "13" head with an extension cord, we unscrew the four nuts securing the side brackets of the transfer case suspension and two nuts of the cross member of the rear bracket of the transfer case.
We lower the transfer case on the stop so that it comes off the mounting studs.
Turning the shaft with an open-end wrench "13", in turn, unscrew the four nuts securing the shaft to the drive axle flange.
The nuts are equipped with Teflon inserts to prevent spontaneous loosening. It is recommended not to allow repeated use of nuts and promptly replace them with new ones.
To remove the nuts, insert the mounting paddle into the gap between the CV joint and the flange, then press the CV joint so that it slightly moves along the shaft splines and allows you to remove the unscrewed nuts.
Then we squeeze the CV joint with two mounting blades so that the fastening pins come out of the holes in the drive axle flange.
The transfer case, removed from the mounting studs, allows this to be done.If you do not free the transfer case, then the free play of the splined joints of both CV joints will not be enough.
Holding the drive shaft with our free hand, unscrew the four nuts securing the shaft to the transfer case flange ...
Install the drive shaft in reverse order.
To the front wheels, the torque is transmitted through the drives.
The front wheel drive of the Chevrolet Niva consists of two constant velocity joints (SHRUS) connected by a shaft.
The connection of the shaft with the hinges is splined, from the longitudinal movement the shaft is fixed in the hinge by thrust and retaining rings.
The splined shank of the outer CV joint of the Chevrolet Niva is connected to the wheel hub and secured by the bearing nut, and the inner spline is connected to the half-axle gear in the front axle gearbox.
Each joint consists of a body, cage, inner race and six balls. The latter are located in the grooves of the body and the cage.
In the outer CV joint of the Chevy Niva, these grooves are made along the radius, due to which it can transmit torque at large angles.
In the inner joint, the grooves are straight, which allows the parts to move in the longitudinal direction, lengthening or shortening the drive (this is necessary to compensate for the mutual movements of the suspension and the front axle gearbox), and deviate at small angles.
There is a splined hole inside the cage for connection to the drive shaft.

The details of each Chevrolet Niva CV joint are made with high precision, the balls of one sorting group are selected individually for each joint.
Therefore, it is inadmissible to replace individual parts, and their relative position should be noted before disassembly. The joint is filled with SHRUS-4 grease before assembly.
The tightness of the SHRUS joint of the Chevy Niva - an indispensable condition for its reliable operation - is ensured by protective rubber covers.
The cover is put on the hinge housing and the drive shaft with its ends and is secured with clamps.
It is allowed to use only special clamps with a smooth inner surface and without protruding parts.
The outer CV joint cover is additionally protected by a plastic casing.
Dirt deflectors are pressed onto the housings of the inner and outer hinges.
It is not allowed to replace individual parts of the CV joint joint, with the exception of the cover, clamps, casing, as well as retaining, persistent and dirt reflecting rings.

A grenade in a Chevrolet Niva car is a constant velocity joint. It is called a grenade due to its similarity in appearance to a military device. In fact, a grenade is a CV joint. The purpose of the CV joint in the car: ensuring the transmission of torque at angles of rotation about the axis of 70 degrees. The CV joint is also called a hinge. Cars use CV joint in the drive wheel drive system.
A little about the history of the grenade. After cars with a front-wheel drive mechanism began to be produced, the work of this drive was carried out using conventional universal joints. However, the work of the hinge, with this principle of operation, was loaded. During the turn of the car, the outer hinge worked in a difficult position - with angles of 30-35 degrees. At angles over 10 degrees, the car would lose power. Plus, the hinges had a short lifespan, the tires of the drive wheels were worn out, and the transmission shaft worked under a huge load. Such problems contributed to the invention of a special joint (SHRUS), which transmitted rotation evenly regardless of the angle between the connected shafts.
This device is used to transmit engine torque. The transmission is carried out from the gearbox to the drive wheels, often to the front. Due to this transmission, rotation occurs at the same speed, taking into account the fact that there is an angle between the shafts. In a Niva Chevrolet car, there are two types of grenades - external and internal. But, like any auto part, grenades have their own specific service life, which also sometimes ends. And the time comes to repair or change the hinges. Let us first consider the main possible causes of breakdowns.
There are not so many reasons why the CV joint stops functioning.
Wear of rubbing parts of the mechanism due to a long service life. This is the main reason why any part breaks down. But this is good if the part needs to be repaired after 100,000 km, and not earlier. But there are times when breakdowns occur on a new car.
Improper driving. But here, most likely, careless driving. Sloppy driving can be caused by: - sharp rotation of the steering wheel in different directions; - frequent driving on bumps at high speed; - sharp eversion of the steering wheel over 60 degrees. In this position of the steering wheel, the part experiences maximum loads.
Ingress of dust, water and dirt into the device. This reason is also common and contributes to the failure of the hinge in a matter of days after the ingress of foreign matter. The contact is carried out due to damage to the anther. Anthers tend to burst or crack during operation. It is extremely difficult to detect damage to the anther, because for this it is necessary to carry out constant monitoring, which is almost unrealistic.
The grenade consists of moving parts, which, depending on the use, are erased or broken. Therefore, the CV joints must be replaced with new ones. Only the device on which damage to the boot is noticed is subject to repair, and the dirt has not yet had time to get inside. But such cases are very rare. In addition, the price for the original device for Shevik is not so high.
How to determine the malfunction of a grenade? Determining the fault of the CV joint on the car is quite simple. To do this, while driving, turn the steering wheel all the way to the right and then to the left. At this time, at the extreme right or left position of the steering wheel, a crackling or crunching sound is heard from under the wheels, then the hinges must be replaced. Moreover, it is necessary to find out exactly whether it is necessary to replace one hinge or all of them.
To install a new grenade, you must first remove the old worn out one. Consider the stages of replacing a grenade. How to remove the axle shaft from a Chevrolet Niva car can be found on the Internet and watch a video. After the axle shaft with a grenade is removed from the car, you must proceed to the following steps:
We clamp the axle shaft in a vice so that it is convenient to work with a grenade.
A worn-out boot is removed from the grenade by cutting or turning it inside out.
With the help of a hammer, the CV joint is knocked out from the axle shaft. This is done by tapping the grenade with a hammer.
After the grenade is removed, the old boot is removed and all the teeth of the CV joint axle are cleaned. You can even rinse with gasoline and lubricate with Litol.
A new grenade is being installed. The price of a new assembled grenade ranges from 1,000 to 1,200 rubles. Sold mainly with a boot and grease inside.
First, the boot is threaded onto the axle shaft, and then the grenade is fixed. A click indicates the correct installation of the CV joint.
The boot is clamped with clamps. The replacement process is complete.
Torn boot, needs replacing
The same principle can be used to repair a grenade. To do this, it is necessary to remove the worn boot, clean and rinse the hinge from the inside with gasoline and clean it with a stream of compressed air.
Repair is carried out if a little dust or dirt gets inside the CV joint. If the internal parts of the CV joint are damaged, then the grenade cannot be repaired.
In fact, this is not a repair, but a simple boot replacement. It is only necessary to clean the inside of the hinge, lubricate it with special grease and install a new boot. The process of repairing a damaged anther on a grenade is over.
The price of the new original grenade is already known, but there are cheaper variants of CV joints on the market. These are low-quality materials that will last for a short time. The price for a new boot, which is sold with grease, costs about 250-500 rubles.
