In detail: DIY repair of a stamped disk from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.
Hello dear readers and blog visitors Avtoguid.ru Today in the article you can find out how to repair alloy wheels with your own hands without using the services of automotive repair centers.
If you wish and have free time, all work on the restoration of alloy wheels can be done on your own without outside help. Casting repair is a great opportunity to return them to their original appearance and save money on specialist services.
It must be remembered that it is not the gods who burn the pots and some work on the repair of the car or its individual units can be done independently. The main thing is to be patient and not rush. Alloy wheels are popular with most of the drivers.
Unlike stamped discs, they are reliable, durable and practical. The use of molding makes it possible to increase the attractiveness of the car's appearance.
Initially, without exception, all the wheels of the cars were equipped with stamped disks, the reliability of which raised doubts. They had a low level of quality and could not be used for a significant period of time.
Die-cast car wheels were replaced by alloy wheels, which caused an unprecedented excitement among drivers. Die-cast cars sold out like hotcakes in a hungry year. This is especially true of used, well-worn machines. Even the cost of cars with alloy wheels was higher than similar cars with stamping.
The modern cast wheel is produced using the hot casting method. Metal raw materials are melted at high temperatures to a liquid state and poured into special molds. Undoubtedly, their reliability is higher than that of stamped metal discs, but there are peculiarities of use and operation.

Due to the production technology, alloy wheels have one weak side. With sufficiently strong impacts and collisions, their surface is deformed and its integrity is violated. Damage leads to a violation of the geometry of the disc and the appearance of a characteristic runout, giving off to the steering wheel when the car is moving.
Modern machines are equipped with an improved version of forged wheel casting, the production technology of which has undergone improvements. This was done specifically to improve the reliability and durability of the material. When creating a forged disc, the prepared light-alloy material is slightly heated to increase the plasticity of the base and is stamped.
The structure of the material becomes fibrous, which contributes to a significant increase in its strength and reliability. Forged wheels are resistant to various kinds of damage and can be used for a considerable period of time.
Every motorist should remember that the use of a deformed alloy wheel reduces the safety of driving a vehicle several times. It can be the weak link and thus provoke an accident. Periodically, it is necessary to inspect the surface of the alloy wheels, and if damage is found, take immediate measures to eliminate them.
- damage to paintwork;
- chips and scratches;
- axial displacement;
- cracks;
- radial displacement;
- violation of the integrity of the disk.
Repair of alloy wheels must be carried out depending on the season. If they are installed on summer tires, then the restoration is carried out in winter. When using molding on winter tires, the repair time for alloy wheels comes in the summer.In principle, everything is clear and understandable.
It must be remembered that all damage to alloy wheels associated with a violation of their geometry or significant deformations can only be performed using special equipment. It is simply impossible to do without the help of competent and qualified specialists.
Other types of damage: chips, scratches and just a violation of the integrity of the surface of the disc can be done independently without assistance. In this case, the use of special equipment and expensive materials is not required.
1. Alloy wheels are freed from rubber and carefully inspected for damage. To simplify the search for defects, the outer and inner sides of the disc must be cleaned of dirt.
2. If cracks are found on the surface of the cast disc, further repair work becomes impossible. Argon welding is used to eliminate cracks. If the disc is with an aluminum or magnesium alloy, special electrodes are used to repair cracks. After eliminating the cracks, you can proceed to the next stage.
3. The place of welding and repair of cracks must be sanded to eliminate the weld.
4. The geometry of the alloy wheel is checked using special equipment. You need to seek help from specialists who will perform diagnostics quickly and for a small amount of money. If it is not violated, the task is noticeably simplified and you can proceed to the next stage.
5. Using emery paper or a grinder, it is necessary to remove all irregularities and roughness on the surface of the disc in places of damage.
6.Epoxy two-component paste, matched to the color of the wheel, is applied evenly over the entire prepared surface of the cast wheel (can be purchased at almost any store selling auto chemistry). It is best to use a special automotive spatula to apply it.
7. A hair dryer can be used to speed up the drying of the epoxy layer.
8. The surface of the cast wheel, treated with epoxy paste, should be sanded using fine-grit sandpaper.
At this point, the main stage of repairing chips, scratches and just minor damage to the alloy wheel is over. You can proceed to painting the surface of the alloy wheels.
After the repair of cast disks with your own hands in its main phase is over, you can proceed to the finishing part of the work on restoring the surface of the disk. It is no less important and responsible than the previous types of work. Careless actions can ruin the appearance of the disc, and all efforts will go to waste.
Painting alloy wheels will not only emphasize the individuality of the machine, but also provide effective protection against external adverse factors.
A special automotive primer is used to protect the material from the occurrence of corrosive destructive processes. It should be applied in two or three layers, depending on the degree and depth of damage. Wait until the previous one is dry before applying each primer coat. You can use a hair dryer to speed up the drying process.
The prepared surface of the cast disc can be painted. A spray can or spray gun is used. If it is not possible to rent a spray gun, paint cans should be used. The quality of work in this case will be lower than when using the equipment.
For high-quality painting of a cast wheel, it is enough to apply two coats. After applying the first layer of paint, wait until it dries completely. Once the paint is completely dry, the alloy wheels can be reused.
Do not forget that you need to work with paint in a respirator, goggles and rubber gloves. Otherwise, damage to the organs of vision and respiration may result from careless handling of materials. On this, the repair of the car's alloy wheels can be considered completely finished.
There are a large number of reasons causing damage to the surface of an alloy wheel, and they do not always depend on the driving style or the quality of the road surface.
Currently, the following main points can be distinguished regarding the violation of the integrity of the surface of alloy wheels:
Formed when a cast disc hits a deep hole on the road surface at an impressive speed. First of all, discs on low-profile tires suffer. They are the ones who take the brunt.
The radial displacement of the cast disc is reflected by the beating of the steering wheel. A common cause of damage is inattention of the driver and hitting a road stone (curb). This leads to the appearance of a dent on its surface.
When moving, the cast disk writes out "eights". Damage can be caused by a side impact on a curb or by colliding with another vehicle.
Small pebbles, crushed stone and gravel leave their marks on the surface of the cast disc. Of course, they do not deeply destroy the disc, but spoil its appearance.
Do not be afraid to repair alloy wheels with your own hands. There is nothing terrible and difficult in this. The most important thing is to prepare and focus on the quality of work, not speed.
It is not only from unexpected encounters with pits or bumps on the road that wheel rims suffer. They can be easily damaged by pressing against, for example, a high curb. And the reagents that are used to water the capital's roads do not spare the paintwork. But cosmetic flaws are not a big deal. Yes, it is unpleasant and ugly, but you can ride with it. As a last resort, the disc is given for repainting. But if you fly at speed into a hole with sharp edges, the consequences can be much more tragic. You will not only "condemn" the tire, but you will also write off the disk. Especially if it is cast. After all, such a disk has an integral metal structure, and in case of damage it is completely impossible to restore it. But first things first.
Let's start with the least of all evils - the loss of the attractive appearance of the discs. Powder painting can restore its former condition. Before the procedure, the discs are washed with an abrasive cleaning agent and dried. Then the old coating is removed with sandpaper. Degrease the surface with a special solution. The paint is applied with a gun with an electrostatic effect: particles of paint adhere to the disc due to a static charge. Then the disc is placed in a special oven, where it is kept at a temperature of up to 200 ° C to achieve polymerization of the paint. The process takes about 15 minutes.
Discs can also be painted with acrylic paint. Unlike powder, which is based on a dry concentrate, acrylic is liquid. And this greatly simplifies the process. Plus, if the entire discs are coated with powder paint, then with acrylic you can paint part of the surface, apply a certain pattern, for example. It is not necessary to contact professionals for this. Paints are sold in aerosol cans, this allows you to work in a garage.

Reading advertisements or advertisements for the sale of cars: color, leather interior, all options, etc., you have never thought about one feature. Namely, why are rims either not mentioned at all, or mentioned at the end, casually alloy wheels or castings? No, but in vain.
Wheels deserve more attention, and not the generally accepted attitude, according to the principle: "go, and go." Why? Because the condition of a car's rims affects many aspects of the condition of car systems, cost savings and traffic safety.
As an integral part of the chassis and suspension of a car, defective rims affect the following parameters:
- Serviceability of suspension elements. Radial or axial displacement of the damaged disc leads to failure of: steering mechanism, shock absorbers, suspension elements.
- Savings and safety. A defective wheel rim is a failure of the tire, which means the cost of replacing it, an increase in fuel consumption and a decrease in safety while driving.
The condition of domestic roads makes us increasingly pay attention to such an event as the repair of car rims. Repair of car rims, depending on their type, can be divided into two types: repair and restoration. Moreover, the second type of repair is more related to the restoration of alloy wheels.
Repair of stamped and steel discs we often produce ourselves with a sledgehammer. But, the outward appearance of a repaired dent is very, very deceiving. A simple recommendation for the repair of standard wheel disks, which are steel and stamped ones, is that in case of a dent in the disk, you need to contact a tire fitting. On the equipment, you will be able to roll the disc or roll out the disc.
With regard to alloy wheels - everything is a little more serious. Experts do not recommend repairing light-alloy wheels by rolling. The structure of the metal is broken and the cast wheel loses its quality.
Repair of alloy wheels - the matter is more serious due to the peculiarities of the disc material. You should know that a real master will never undertake the repair of alloy wheels, as a rule, in two cases: if there is a crack at the base of the spokes or a crack near the bore holes. He will not take it, even if he is a "magician and sorcerer of argon welding."
Do-it-yourself wheel rim repair is a doable event. But, on one condition: if the damage to the disk does not concern its parameters. As a rule, do-it-yourself repair and painting of disks is carried out in the case of small cracks on standard disks, which can be welded by conventional welding. This is the so-called disc restoration.
The restoration of cast disks can be done by hand if you own argon welding. If not, then the way out is service.
As usual, wheel repair and painting are complementary concepts. According to the technology, repair and painting of alloy wheels practically does not differ from painting of ordinary stamped wheels. In addition to the external aesthetics, the disc painting is also protective. Steel rims are in great need of corrosion protection and, accordingly, painting provides such protection.
Modern auto chemistry makes it possible to paint steel discs in such a way that, in terms of aesthetic perception, they will look much more attractive than casting. The main thing is to observe the technology of painting discs.
By and large, the technology of painting cast and steel wheels is no different from the technology of painting the body or painting the plastic parts of a car. All operations are required.
- Preparing the disc for painting: if possible, then the disc must be sandblasted.If not, carry out the cleaning with sandpaper, a metal brush or an electric drill or grinder with a special attachment (in this case, observing safety measures as much as possible).
- Degrease the disc surface with mineral spirits. It is advisable to wet the floors in the garage so that dust during painting does not sit on the disc.
- Primer. Both priming and painting of the disc can be carried out both from an aerosol can and using a painting "pistol". Naturally, the quality of painting with a spray gun is much higher. The primer is carried out 2-3 times with breaks after a layer of five minutes. Then we leave the discs alone for 24 hours. The primer must dry.
- The painting of the discs is the same as for the primer. An hour or two after applying the last layer of paint, apply a protective coating with an auto varnish. Also in two or three layers.
If there is such an opportunity, then the rims after painting should stand for 7-8 days. During this time, the auto varnish will gain its strength in full.
Good luck with your wheel rims repair and painting.

Hello dear motorists! What do wheels mean to you? You personally, what role do you assign to them in the first place? Aesthetic or practical?
Don't let these questions seem strange to you. After all, to be honest, a very rare motorist thinks about the role and significance of a wheel disk in everyday life.
Only fans of car tuning, but perhaps that's all. And we, the bulk of car owners, remember about disks only when we get into a hole, and we already unconditionally need to repair car disks.
It is always important to remember! A defective wheel rim means extra costs for repair or replacement of parts:
- failure of the elements of the steering mechanism;
- failure of suspension elements. In particular - shock absorbers;
- violation of the collapse of convergence, with the ensuing "devouring" of rubber;
First, let's define the concept of when the wheel rims need to be repaired. The question, in fact, is given relevance by the state of the road surface of domestic traffic directions.
Even with a careful, in normal mode, driving, we constantly find ourselves with the wheels of a car in pits, potholes, etc. Especially dangerous are pits in asphalt with sharp edges and a depth of more than 10 cm. Any, even the most branded high-quality disc from such "encounters" sometimes gets irreparable defects.
And if you are driving a car, adhere to the principle: more speed - less holes, then repair of car disks is not far off for you.
You can talk a lot about the beauty, quality and performance of different types of rims. Now we are talking about renovation. Therefore, repairing stamped steel discs is an easier and more cost effective procedure.
- Repair of stamped discs can be carried out at any tire fitting station, by rolling. Naturally, subject to the availability of equipment. As a matter of urgency, you can repair the stamped disc with your own hands using a sledgehammer. Although, this does not mean that the stamped disc, after sledgehammer repairs, does not need rolling.
- Repair of light-alloy aluminum wheels in the garage is no longer possible. Repairing alloy wheels requires a method such as dressing. And its technology implies the use of special equipment.
- Welding steel rims is also a simpler activity than welding light-alloy rims. Argon welding is already required here.
What is corrected in the process of repairing both steel and light-alloy wheels? First of all, there is the radial and axial displacement of the disc caused by the impact. Then, naturally, mechanical damage to the disc in the form of cracks is eliminated.
Repair of auto disks can be roughly divided into two categories: repair and restoration of disks. At the same time, restoration is a category in which cast, light-alloy wheels fall.The technological process of restoring alloy wheels implies exactly their restoration, i.e. recovery.
Repair of stamped steel discs do it yourself - the procedure is quite doable. When straightening a disc with a sledgehammer, we can eliminate visible defects, without guaranteeing geometric accuracy.
Therefore, it is still not worthwhile to engage in amateur performances, but spend only 15 minutes to roll a stamped disc at a tire fitting. And the geometry of the disc will correspond to the norm, and the structure of the metal will not be disturbed.
Repair of aluminum cast wheels experts do not recommend doing it yourself. Not because it is their earnings. No. The fact is that two methods are used to repair a cast disc: straightening by cold extrusion and by point heating followed by extrusion of the damaged section of the disc.
Both the one and the other method involve the use of a special machine, with centering, hydraulics and special attachments. If you have such a machine lying around in the garage, then repairing alloy wheels with your own hands is a doable task.
Welding rims... When repairing steel discs, welding is rarely used. The structure of the metal is such that cracks on stamped discs are rare. The same cannot be said about "casting".
Repair of light-alloy wheels allows craftsmen to identify cracks on the wheel. Elimination of cracks on cast disks is carried out using argon-arc welding.
You should be aware that a true professional in repairing alloy wheels will never undertake welding of cracks on the wheel in the area of the entire landing area and at the base of the spokes (any). The loads on the wheel rim during movement are such that welding is not able to eliminate the damaged structure of the rim. This is a matter of your safety in the first place.
Car wheel painting... This type of disk maintenance can most likely be called an aesthetic preventive measure. The painting technology for stamped wheels and alloy wheels is practically the same. For stamped steel discs, painting is an important element of corrosion protection, thus increasing their service life.
These are the types and features of wheel rim repairs that exist at the moment. We are able to do some of the repair of disks with our own hands, but it is still better to entrust some procedures to professional people and special equipment.
Good luck with your steel and alloy wheel repairs. Better yet, watch the road and wheel rim repairs will be unfamiliar to you.
You can talk a lot about the quality and performance of various types of rims. Now we will talk about repairing them. Therefore, repair of stamped iron discs is the easiest and most economical procedure.
Repair of stamped disks can be carried out at any tire changer, by rolling. As a matter of urgency, you can repair the stamped disc on your own using a sledgehammer. Although, this does not mean that a stamped disk, after a sledgehammer of repair work, does not need rolling.
Repair of light-alloy duralumin discs in a workshop can no longer be done. To repair alloy wheels, a method such as dressing is required. And its development involves the use of special equipment.
Welding iron rims is also easier than welding alloy rims. Here you need argon welding.
What is being corrected in the process of repairing both iron and light-alloy wheels? First - the circular and axial displacement of the wheel disc, which occurred due to the impact. Then, mechanical damage in the form of cracks is eliminated.
Repair of disks of a car can be conditionally divided into 2 categories: for repair and for restoration of disks. Restoration is a category that includes all cast and light-alloy wheels. The technological process of restoring titanium discs involves only their restoration.
Repairing stamped iron discs on your own is a doable procedure. When straightening a disc with a sledgehammer, we remove visible imperfections, without guarantees of geometric accuracy.
Therefore, all the same, you do not need to engage in amateur performances, but spend only 20 minutes to roll a stamped disc at a tire changer. And the geometry of the disk will correspond to the norm, and the structure of the iron will not be severely disturbed.
Experts do not recommend repairing duralumin alloy wheels on their own. Not because it is their earnings. Of course not. The fact is that two methods are used to repair a cast disc: straightening by a cool extrusion method and by a point heating method with the next extrusion of the warped section of the disc.
Both methods involve the use of special machines with hydraulics, centering and special attachments. If you have such a machine in the workshop, then repairing alloy wheels on your own is an easy task.
When repairing iron discs, welding is not always used. The structure of the iron is such that cracks in stamped discs are rare. The same cannot be said about alloy wheels.
Elimination of cracks on cast discs is done using argon-arc welding.
You need to know that a real specialist in the repair of alloy wheels will not undertake welding of cracks on the wheel in the area of the entire landing area and at the base of the spokes. Overloads on wheel rims while driving are such that welding is not able to remove the damaged metal structure, therefore, such welding is not safe when driving.

The headache of motorists is the roads in the pseudo-Japanese style "ToYamaToKanava". The result of a trip along such a road, and even disguised by puddles after the rain, is very deplorable. Bent discs are the smallest problem that can happen on a track like this. We can say that we got off easy. In spring and autumn, wheel alignment is on the agenda.
Some car enthusiasts do not find it necessary to fix bent discs and throw them away right away. This is also a reasonable approach. A heavily bent disc, even in a car service, after rolling can be even more damaged: microcracks will appear, from which, when the wheel is hit again or in the cold, the disc can simply crumble. In this case, even welding will not help.
If you are determined to align the disc, you can always contact the service. But if the deformation of the disc is small, welding is not required, there is absolutely little money to buy a new disc, and there is more than enough strength, you can carry out this procedure in your own garage.
- We will need: a jack, some kind of load, a hammer, a sledgehammer, water.
- First, remove the damaged wheel. Lift the car using a jack. Remove the wheel from the mounts. The damage to the disc is minor, so it is not necessary to remove the tire.
- Place the wheel on a horizontal surface. It will be more efficient on the floor, since a heavy load will have to be placed on top of the wheel. Otherwise, the wheel will toss and jump from powerful blows with a sledgehammer.
- The wheel is pressed to the floor. First, we perform a "rough" straightening. It is necessary to straighten the crumpled place on the disk with a sledgehammer.This is very difficult to carry out, because the cast wheel is difficult to process. It takes a lot of effort to achieve a result.
- Next, we take a hammer, substitute it on the edge of the rim along the inner side of the disc. We hit the hammer with a sledgehammer, carefully correcting defects of rough work. We perform such actions until the rim takes the shape of a regular circle.
- It is also to be found out if the tire is leaking water. It is required to pour water over the wheel, monitor the condition. In the presence of bubbles on the surface of the wheel, there is only one conclusion - depressurization. Use a hammer to straighten the disc until the bubbles disappear. There are no bubbles, which means that the procedure for straightening the wheel is complete, you can mount it in place.

It is not always possible to notice that the wheel rim is damaged. But in this state, driving a car is dangerous. If the disc is damaged, the following points appear: during the ride, the car skids in one certain direction, therefore, the damaged wheel is there. Discomfort while driving, strange "jumps" of the car is also possible. In this case, the wheel rims should be checked for visible defects.
