In detail: do-it-yourself stamped disk repair from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.
Hello dear readers and visitors of the blog Autoguid.ru Today in the article you can find out how alloy wheels are repaired with your own hands without using the services of automobile repair centers.
If you wish and have free time, all work on the restoration of alloy wheels can be done independently without outside help. Casting repair is a great opportunity to return them to their original appearance and save money on the services of specialists.
It must be remembered that it is not the gods who burn the pots and some work on repairing a car or its individual components can be done independently. The main thing is to be patient and not rush. Alloy wheels are popular among most drivers.
Unlike stamped discs, they are distinguished by reliability, durability and practicality. The use of casting makes it possible to increase the attractiveness of the appearance of the car.
Initially, without exception, all the wheels of the cars were equipped with stamped disks, the reliability of which was in doubt. They were of low quality and could not be used for a significant period of time.
The stamped car wheels were replaced by alloy wheels, which caused an unprecedented stir among drivers. Cast cars sold out like hot cakes in a hungry year. This is especially true for second-hand battered cars. Even the cost of cars with alloy wheels was higher than similar cars with stamping.
A modern cast wheel is produced using the hot casting method. Metal raw materials are melted at high temperature to a liquid state and poured into special molds. Undoubtedly, their reliability is higher than stamped metal discs, but there are some peculiarities of use and operation.

Due to the production technology, alloy wheels have one weak side. With sufficiently strong impacts and collisions, their surface is deformed and its integrity is violated. Damage leads to a violation of the disk geometry and the appearance of a characteristic beat that gives off to the steering wheel when the car is moving.
Modern machines are equipped with an improved version of the cast forged wheels production technology, which has undergone improvements. This was done specifically to increase the reliability and durability of the material. When creating a forged disc, the prepared light-alloy material is slightly heated to increase the ductility of the base and is stamped.
The structure of the material becomes fibrous, which contributes to a significant increase in its strength and reliability. Forged wheels are resistant to various types of damage and can be used for a significant period of time.
Every car enthusiast should remember that the use of a deformed alloy wheel reduces the safety of driving a vehicle several times. It can be a weak link and thus provoke an accident. Periodically, it is necessary to inspect the surface of alloy wheels, and if damage is detected, take immediate measures to eliminate them.
- damage to the paintwork;
- chips and scratches;
- axial displacement;
- cracks;
- radial displacement;
- disk integrity violation.
Repair of alloy wheels must be carried out depending on the time of the year. If they are installed on summer tires, then restoration is carried out in winter. When casting on winter tires is used, the repair time for alloy wheels comes in the summer.In principle, everything is clear and understandable.
It must be remembered that all damage to alloy wheels associated with a violation of their geometry or significant deformations can only be performed using special equipment. It is simply impossible to do without the help of competent and qualified specialists.
Other types of damage: chips, scratches and simply a violation of the integrity of the disc surface can be done independently without outside help. In this case, the use of special equipment and expensive materials is not required.
1. Alloy wheels are freed from rubber and carefully inspected for damage. To simplify the search for defects, the outer and inner sides of the disk must be cleaned of dirt.
2. If cracks are found on the surface of the cast disc, further restoration work becomes impossible. Argon welding is used to eliminate cracks. If the disc is aluminum or magnesium alloy, special electrodes are used to repair cracks. After removing the cracks, you can proceed to the next step.
3. The place of welding and repair of cracks must be sanded to eliminate the weld.
4. The geometry of the cast disk is checked using special equipment. You need to seek help from specialists who will perform diagnostics quickly and for a small amount of money. If it is not violated, the task is noticeably simplified and you can proceed to the next stage.
5. Using sandpaper or a grinder, remove all irregularities and roughness on the surface of the disc in places of damage.
6. Evenly over the entire prepared surface of the cast disc, apply a two-component epoxy paste, matched to the color of the disc (can be purchased at almost any auto chemical goods store). It is best to use a special automotive spatula for its application.
7. To speed up the drying of the epoxy layer, you can use a hair dryer.
8. The surface of the cast disc treated with epoxy paste must be sanded using fine sandpaper.
At this point, the main stage of repairing chips, scratches and just minor damage to the cast disc is over. You can proceed to painting the surface of alloy wheels.
After the repair of alloy wheels with your own hands in its main phase is over, you can proceed to the finishing part of the work to restore the surface of the disk. It is no less important and responsible than the previous types of work. Careless actions can spoil the appearance of the disk, and all efforts will go down the drain.
Painting alloy wheels will not only emphasize the individuality of the car, but also provide effective protection against external adverse factors.
A special automotive primer is used to protect the material from the occurrence of corrosive destructive processes. It is applied in two or three layers, depending on the degree and depth of damage. Before applying each layer of primer, it is necessary to wait for the previous one to dry. You can use a hair dryer to speed up the drying process.
The prepared surface of the cast disc can be painted. A spray can or spray gun is used. If it is not possible to rent an airbrush, it is necessary to use cans of paint. The quality of work in this case will be lower than when using the equipment.
For high-quality coloring of a cast disk, it is enough to apply two layers. After applying the first layer of paint, you must wait until it dries completely. Once the paint is completely dry, the alloy wheels can be reused.
Do not forget that you need to work with paint in a respirator, goggles and rubber gloves. Otherwise, you can get damage to the organs of vision and breathing in case of careless handling of materials. On this, the repair of alloy wheels of the car can be considered completely finished.
There are a large number of reasons for causing damage to the surface of an alloy wheel and they do not always depend on the driving style or the quality of the roadway.
At present, the following main points can be distinguished regarding the violation of the integrity of the surface of alloy wheels:
They are formed when an alloy wheel hits a deep hole in the road surface at an impressive speed. First of all, disks on low-profile rubber suffer. They are the ones taking the brunt.
The radial displacement of the cast disk is given by the beating of the steering wheel. A common cause of damage is driver inattention and hitting a road stone (curb). This leads to the appearance of a dent on its surface.
When moving, the cast disk writes out “eights”. Damage can be caused by a side impact on a curb or a collision with another vehicle.
Small pebbles, crushed stone and gravel leave their marks on the surface of the cast disc. Of course, they do not destroy the disk deeply, but spoil its appearance.
Do not be afraid to repair alloy wheels with your own hands. There is nothing terrible or complicated about this. The most important thing is to prepare and put the main emphasis on the quality of work, and not speed.
Wheel disks suffer not only from unexpected encounters with pits or potholes on the road. They are easy to damage, clinging, for example, to a high curb. Yes, and the reagents that are poured over the capital's roads do not spare the paintwork. But cosmetic flaws are not scary. Yes, it’s unpleasant and ugly, but you can ride with it. In extreme cases, the disk is given for repainting. But if you fly at speed into a hole with sharp edges, the consequences can be much more tragic. You will not only “sentence” the tire, but also write off the disk. Especially if it's cast. After all, such a disk has an integral metal structure, and in case of damage it is completely impossible to restore it. But first things first.
Let's start with the least of the evils - the loss of an attractive appearance of the disks. Powder coating can restore the former state. Before the procedure, the discs are washed with an abrasive cleaner and dried. Then sandpaper remove the previous coating. Degrease the surface with a special solution. The paint is applied with a gun with an electrostatic effect: paint particles stick to the disc due to a static charge. Then the disc is placed in a special oven where it is kept at temperatures up to 200 ° C to achieve polymerization of the paint. The process takes about 15 minutes.
Wheels can also be painted with acrylic paint. Unlike powder, which is based on a dry concentrate, acrylic is liquid. And it greatly simplifies the process. Plus, if entire discs are covered with powder paint, then acrylic can paint part of the surface, apply a certain pattern, for example. For this, it is not necessary to turn to professionals. Paints are sold in aerosol cans, this allows you to work in garage conditions.

Reading advertisements or ads for the sale of cars: color, leather interior, all options, etc., you never thought about one feature. Namely, why are rims either not mentioned at all, or mentioned at the end, casually alloy wheels or castings? No, but in vain.
Wheels deserve more attention, rather than the generally accepted attitude, according to the principle: "go, and go." Why? Because the condition of the car's rims affects many aspects of the condition of auto systems, cost savings and traffic safety.
Being an integral element of the chassis and suspension of a car, faulty rims affect the following parameters:
- Correction of the suspension elements. Radial or axial displacement of a damaged disk leads to failure of: steering gear, shock absorbers, suspension elements.
- Economy and safety. A defective rim is a tire failure, which means the cost of replacing it, an increase in fuel consumption and a decrease in safety while driving.
The state of domestic roads makes us increasingly pay attention to such an event as the repair of car rims. Repair of car disks, depending on their type, can be divided into two types: repair and restoration. Moreover, the second type of repair is more related to the restoration of alloy wheels.
Repair of stamped and steel wheels we often do it ourselves, with a sledgehammer. But, the external appearance, as it were, of a repaired dent is very, very deceptive. A simple recommendation for the repair of regular rims, which are steel and stamped, is necessary in case of a disc dent, contact a tire service. On the equipment, you will be rolling a disk or rolling out a disk.
With regard to alloy wheels - everything is a little more serious. Experts do not recommend repairing alloy wheels by rolling. The structure of the metal is broken and the cast disk loses its qualities.
Alloy wheel repair - the matter is more serious due to the characteristics of the disc material. You should know that a real master will never undertake the repair of alloy wheels, as a rule, in two cases: if there is a crack at the base of the spokes or a crack near the mounting holes. He won’t take it, even if he is a “mage and magician of argon welding.”
Do-it-yourself wheel repair is a doable event. But, on one condition: if the damage to the disk does not concern its parameters. As a rule, do-it-yourself repair and painting of disks is carried out in case of small cracks on regular disks, which can be welded by conventional welding. This is the so-called restoration of disks.
Restoration of alloy wheels can be done by hand if you own argon welding. If not, then the way out is service.
As usual, the repair and painting of disks are concepts that complement each other. According to the technology, the repair and painting of alloy wheels practically do not differ from the painting of ordinary stamped wheels. In addition to external aesthetics, painting discs is also protective. Steel wheels are in dire need of protection against corrosion, and, accordingly, painting provides such protection.
Modern car chemicals make it possible to paint steel wheels in such a way that, according to aesthetic perception, they will look much more attractive than casting. The main thing is to follow the technology of painting discs.
By and large, the technology of painting cast and steel wheels is no different from the technology of painting a body or painting plastic parts of a car. All transactions are required.
- Preparing the disc for painting: if possible, the disc must be sandblasted.If not, clean it with sandpaper, a metal brush or an electric drill or grinder with a special nozzle (in this case, observing safety measures to the utmost).
- Degrease the disc surface with white spirit. It is advisable to moisten the floors in the garage so that the dust does not sit on the disc during painting.
- Primer. Both priming and painting the disc can be done both from an aerosol can and with the help of a paint “gun”. Naturally, the quality of painting with an airbrush is much higher. We carry out the primer 2-3 times with breaks after a layer of five minutes. Then the disks are left alone for 24 hours. The primer must dry.
- Painting discs is similar to primer. An hour or two after applying the last layer of paint, we apply a protective coating with auto varnish. Also in two or three layers.
If there is such an opportunity, then the rims after painting should stand for 7-8 days. During this time, auto varnish will gain its strength in full.
Good luck with the repair and painting of rims.

Hello dear car enthusiasts! What do wheels mean to you? Here you personally, what role do you assign them, in the first place? Aesthetic or practical?
Don't let these questions seem strange to you. After all, to be honest, a very rare motorist thinks about the role and importance of the rim in everyday life.
Only fans of car tuning, but perhaps that's all. And we, the bulk of car owners, remember about disks only when we get into a hole, and we already unconditionally need repair of car disks.
It is important to always remember! A defective rim is an extra cost for repair or replacement of parts:
- failure of the elements of the steering mechanism;
- failure of suspension components. In particular - shock absorbers;
- violation of the collapse of the convergence, with the ensuing "devouring" of rubber;
First, let's define the concept of when repair of rims is required. The issue, in fact, is given relevance by the state of the road surface of domestic traffic directions.
Even with a careful, normal driving, we constantly get the wheels of a car into pits, potholes, etc. Pits in the asphalt with sharp edges and a depth of more than 10 cm are especially dangerous. Any, even the most branded high-quality disc, sometimes receives irreparable defects from such “meetings”.
And if you, while driving a car, adhere to the principle: more speed - fewer holes, then repair of car disks is not far off for you.
You can talk a lot about the beauty, quality and performance of different types of rims. Now we are talking about renovation. Therefore, the repair of stamped steel wheels is an easier and more cost-effective procedure.
- Repair of stamped discs can be carried out at any tire fitting station, using the rolling method. Naturally, with the availability of equipment. As a matter of urgency, you can repair a stamped disc with your own hands using a sledgehammer. Although, this does not mean that a stamped disk, after a sledgehammer repair, does not need rolling.
- You can no longer repair light-alloy aluminum wheels in the garage. To repair alloy wheels, a method such as straightening is required. And its technology involves the use of special equipment.
- Welding steel rims is also a simpler undertaking than welding light alloy rims. Argon welding is already required here.
What is corrected in the repair process, both steel and alloy wheels? First of all, the radial and axial displacement of the disk resulting from the impact. Then, naturally, mechanical damage to the disk in the form of cracks is eliminated.
Repair of car discs can be divided into two categories: repair and restoration of discs. At the same time, restoration is a category into which alloy wheels fall.The technological process of restoration of alloy wheels implies their restoration, i.e. recovery.
Repair of stamped steel discs with your own hands - the procedure is quite doable. When straightening the disc with a sledgehammer, we can eliminate visible defects, without guaranteeing geometric accuracy.
Therefore, you still should not engage in amateur performances, but spend only 15 minutes to roll a stamped disk at a tire fitting. And the disk geometry will correspond to the norm, and the metal structure will not be disturbed.
Repair of aluminum alloy wheels do-it-yourself experts do not recommend doing. Not because it is their income. No. The fact is that two methods are used to repair a cast disk: editing by cold extrusion and by spot heating, followed by extrusion of the damaged area of the disk.
Both methods involve the use of a special machine, with centering, hydraulics and special nozzles. If you have such a machine lying around in the garage, then repairing alloy wheels with your own hands is a doable task.
Wheel welding. When repairing steel discs, welding is rarely used. The structure of the metal is such that cracks on stamped discs are rare. The same cannot be said about "casting".
Repair of alloy wheels allows the masters to identify cracks in the disk. The elimination of cracks on cast disks is carried out using argon-arc welding.
You should know that a true alloy wheel repair professional will never undertake to weld cracks on the disk in the area of the entire landing area and at the base of the spokes (any). The loads on the rim during movement are such that welding is not able to eliminate the broken structure of the rim. This is a matter of your safety first and foremost.
Painting car rims. This type of disc maintenance can most likely be called an aesthetic and preventive measure. The technology for painting stamped wheels and alloy wheels is practically the same. For stamped steel discs, painting is an important element of corrosion protection, and therefore an increase in their service life.
These are the types and features of the repair of rims that exist at the moment. We are able to do some of the repair of disks with our own hands, but it is still better to entrust some procedures to professional people and special equipment.
Good luck with the repair of steel and alloy wheels. Better yet, keep an eye on the road and wheel repair will be unfamiliar to you.
You can talk a lot about the quality and performance properties of various types of rims. Now we will talk about their repair. Therefore, the repair of stamped iron discs is the easiest and most economical procedure.
Repair of stamped discs can be carried out at any tire shop, by rolling. As a matter of urgency, you can repair a stamped disc on your own using a sledgehammer. Although, this does not mean that a stamped disk, after a sledgehammer of repair work, does not need to be rolled.
You can no longer repair light-alloy duralumin wheels in a workshop. To repair alloy wheels, a method such as editing is required. And its development involves the use of special equipment.
Welding iron wheels is also easier than welding alloy wheels. Here you already need argon welding.
What is corrected during the repair process, both iron and alloy wheels? First - the circular and axial displacement of the wheel disc, which occurred due to impact. Then, mechanical damage in the form of cracks is eliminated.
Repair of car disks can be conditionally divided into 2 categories: for repair and restoration of disks. Restoration is a category where all cast and alloy wheels fall. The technological process of restoring titanium discs involves only their restoration.
Do-it-yourself repair of iron stamped discs is a doable procedure. When straightening a disk with a sledgehammer, we remove visible imperfections, without guarantees of geometric accuracy.
Therefore, all the same, you don’t have to engage in amateur performances, but spend only 20 minutes to roll a stamped disk at a tire fitting shop. And the geometry of the disk will correspond to the norm, and the structure of the iron will not be greatly disturbed.
Experts do not recommend repairing duralumin alloy wheels on their own. Not because it is their income. Of course not. The fact is that for the repair of a cast disk, 2 methods are used: editing by the cool extrusion method and the spot heating method with the following extrusion of the warped section of the disk.
Both methods involve the use of special machines, with hydraulics, centering and special nozzles. If you have such a machine in the workshop, then repairing alloy wheels on your own is a simple task.
When repairing iron disks, welding is not always used. The structure of iron is such that cracks on stamped discs are a rare case. What can not be said about alloy wheels.
The elimination of cracks on alloy wheels is done using argon-arc welding.
You need to know that a real alloy wheel repair specialist will not undertake to weld cracks on the disk in the area of the entire landing area and at the base of the spokes. The overloads on the rims while the car is moving are such that welding is not able to remove the broken metal structure, therefore such welding is not safe when driving.

The headache of motorists is the roads in the pseudo-Japanese style "ToYamaToKanawa". The result of a trip along such a road, and even disguised by puddles after the rain, is very deplorable. Bent rims are the smallest problem that can happen on a track like this. We can say that we got off lightly. In spring and autumn, the straightening of rims is on the agenda.
Some motorists do not consider it necessary to fix bent wheels and throw them away immediately. This is also a reasonable approach. A heavily bent disc, even in a car service after rolling, can be even more damaged: microcracks will appear, from which, if the wheel hits again or in cold weather, the disc can simply crumble. In this case, even welding will not help.
If you are determined to straighten the disk, you can always contact the service. But if the disk deformation is small, welding is not required, there is absolutely little money to buy a new disk, and there are more than enough power, you can carry out this procedure in your own garage.
- We will need: a jack, some kind of load, a hammer, a sledgehammer, water.
- First, remove the damaged wheel. Raise the car using a jack. Take the wheel off the mounts. The disc damage is small, so it is not necessary to remove the tire.
- Put the wheel on a horizontal surface. On the floor it will be more efficient, since a heavy load will have to be placed on top of the wheel.Otherwise, from powerful blows with a sledgehammer, the wheel will rush and jump.
- The wheel is pressed to the floor. First, we perform a “rough” straightening. It is necessary to straighten the dented place on the disk with a sledgehammer. It is very difficult to implement this, because the cast disk can be processed with difficulty. You have to put in a lot of effort to get results.
- Next, take a hammer, substitute it on the edge of the rim along the inside of the disk. We strike the hammer with a sledgehammer, carefully correcting the defects of rough work. We perform such actions until the rim takes the shape of a regular circle.
- You also have to find out if the tire is leaking water. It is required to pour water over the wheel, monitor the condition. If there are bubbles on the surface of the wheel, there is only one conclusion - depressurization. Flatten the disk with a hammer until the bubbles disappear. There are no bubbles, which means that the procedure for straightening the wheel is completed, you can mount it in place.

It is not always possible to notice that the rim is damaged. But in this state, driving a car is dangerous. If the disc is damaged, the following points appear: while driving, the car skids in one specific direction, therefore, the damaged wheel is there. Discomfort when driving, strange “jumps” of the car are also possible. In this case, the wheel rims should be checked for visible defects.
