In an upholstered chair, the seat crumbles over time, and its upholstery fades, wipes off and even breaks. But you should not throw away such chairs: it is quite within the power of a home craftsman to fix them.

So our old chairs have wiped upholstery in places, and foam rubber fell from the underside of the seats.

The chairs were made quite soundly - and I didn't want to throw them away. Therefore, the chairs in the amount of six pieces migrated to the dacha. And so. after the end of the dacha season, we got around to repairing them.

The removable seat frames of all chairs were in good condition and the seat upholstery only had to be redesigned.

Chair upholstery - it's not difficult. The main thing is desire and a small amount of tools and material.

The first thing I did was to remove the old upholstery from all the seats (no jewelry was found). But the foam rubber that has fallen into disrepair was formed in abundance. Not only was it crumbling, it was also sticky - I had to scrape off the rest of it with a knife. Longitudinal flat springs are installed on the seat frame, which are well preserved. But I decided to improve the spring system a little.

I attached a strip of stainless steel to each frame from below with self-tapping screws perpendicular to the springs: it will protect the springs from strong deflection and thus prevent the new foam rubber and upholstery from quickly deteriorating. So that the foam rubber does not lie directly on the springs I cut it to fit the frame and stapled it.

I prepared all six chairs in the same way. I bought foam rubber with a thickness of 2 cm. I made a pattern for it with an allowance of 1 cm around the entire perimeter. The material for the upholstery was provided by the wife from old stocks. It turned out to be corduroy of a variegated color - this is quite suitable for a summer residence.

The corduroy was cut with a margin for the fold. After cutting, I began to fasten the upholstery with staples. First of all, I fixed the material with a slight interference in the middle of the opposite sides of the frame. Then he wrapped the corners - and also secured them with brackets. Then, pulling the material evenly, attached the remaining parts.

In conclusion, I decided to close all the folds, springs and matting with white dense material. I also cut it (material) with a small allowance - and secured it. The seat now looked good from either side. It remains to put the seats back in place - and you can use the updated chairs.

I took four wooden slats 1 x 1 cm, using a knife I trimmed their edges (so that they fit in shape to the roundness of the seat), liberally greased these elements with glue where they adjoin the back of the seat and the base of the seat. And to fix these knots while the glue dries, I hammered small nails along the edges of the rails directly to the base of the seat.

In a day, after the glue has set, we finish the work. We paint the lower part of the seat and the reinforcement elements with stain.

And we varnish the outer part of the seat. To give the chair a more attractive look, I varnished the armrests and the side of the seat base. In my case, one layer of varnish was sufficient. It turned out the following:

At this, after the varnish has dried, the repair is completed. In principle, if it were not for the time spent on technological drying of the glue, the repair would not have taken so much time. Let me remind you that the varnish must dry and gain its strength. This, as a rule, will take at least three days.

slowly, carefully pulling out the staples with the staple remover;
in order to save time, you can simply pluck it off with pliers and a powerful screwdriver.

When removing the upholstery, keep in mind that there is a lot of debris underneath. After removing the upholstery, be sure to remove any old staples from the frame or punch them out with a hammer.

First, you need to inspect the wooden parts of the chair for breakages and cracks. They must be glued with wood glue and fixed with a 16 mm clip.

If, when disassembling the chair, you notice that one of the parts of the legs has cracked and began to crumble, you will have to replace it. For this purpose, you can use a wooden furniture board.

Next, you need to sand the details. This process is the most difficult and time consuming. Using a special drill attachment, we remove the varnish from the parts. Then, using a grinder, we clean them until the shade of wood appears.

We cut out the elements of the required shape from the building board. Cover the details with stain and wait for about 5-6 hours.

After this time, we cover the parts with furniture varnish. If you want to maintain the wood effect, do not try to apply too thick and shiny varnish. The varnish dries from about 22 to 24 hours, depending on the thickness of the coating.

Check how tight the belts are. If not too tight, remove the bracket from one side and, using pliers, pull it tighter. Torn belts will have to be replaced. For this, special elastic belts for furniture, rubber strips or any dense fabric are suitable.

It is also advisable to make a drum of dense fabric over the belts, it covers the belts and is nailed with staples. Thanks to the drum, the belts will last much longer and the old foam will not spill out.

First of all, we look at the condition of the foam rubber or foam rubber. If the condition leaves much to be desired, then it must be changed or tried to be restored.

To replace it, you need to measure the thickness of the old filler and add another 1-2 cm to it (over time, the foam rubber sagged) - we need such foam rubber.

To repair chairs, special foam rubber is used for furniture with a density of 22-25 and a thickness of 1-3 cm (depending on the state of the old filler).

To increase the density between the new foam rubber and the old foam rubber, you need to glue spunbond or coarse calico. New foam rubber is glued and fixed around the perimeter with staples.

Having done all the preparatory work, we cover the individual elements with a cloth.

Pre-measure the old fabric and make a stock of 3-5 cm on each side. Having made the necessary measurements, we cut a new fabric.

Remember to stretch well. The corners must be fixed last. We punch the staples, observing a distance of 2-3 cm. More often it makes no sense to do this, and if less often, drops will be visible on the new material.

After finishing the upholstery, use a long screwdriver to make holes for the bolts and punch the brackets around them to prevent the material from tearing at this point.

We assemble the chair in the reverse order. Nuts and bolts can be replaced. Be sure to pull through the washers, over time the nuts can push into the wood and the frame will wobble. On the lower part of the seat we nail a new coarse calico and, if available, a piece of new fabric.
