You can check the bendix directly on the car without removing the entire unit. For this you need:

  1. Include transmission;
  2. Depress the brake pedal;
  3. Start starter.

If at the same time you hear the sound of the armature rotation, then the bendix is ​​slipping and needs to be repaired or replaced with a new one.

To begin with, you can try to carry out a small repair and remove the contamination of the bendix without disassembling the starter. For this:

  • remove the starter from the car (Video instruction at the end of the article);
  • immerse it whole in a container of gasoline and leave it there for several hours;
  • without removing the starter from the container, turn the clutch gear several times for better flushing of the grooves;
  • take out and dry the starter.

If, as a result of such a "not tricky" repair, the malfunction is not eliminated, you will have to remove and disassemble the overrunning clutch.

Starter repair with disassembly of the bendix is ​​performed in the following order:

  1. Before disassembling the bendix, first of all, it must be removed from the anchor (look at the video below).
  2. Then very carefully flare the folded edge of the casing and remove it from the outer race.
  3. Then remove the springs and stretch them so that when they are free, they increase by about 10 mm.
  4. Next, it is necessary to wash all the parts of the bendix, the grooves of the outer cage in gasoline, and clean out the nicks and burrs on the working surfaces.
  5. Do not forget to lubricate all structural elements with engine oil before assembly.

  • the upper and lower nuts securing the starter to the engine block are unscrewed, the starter is removed.

While the starter is still installed in the car, it is quite difficult to carry out a full diagnosis and pinpoint the malfunction. When the starter is on the table, nothing interferes with checking it.

A fully charged battery is required to test the systems to function properly. The mass must be connected to the body, and the "plus" will help to find the malfunction. When connecting the positive wire to the contact bolt of the retractor relay, it should work and push the bendix forward.

If this does not happen, the relay needs to be replaced. When connecting the wire to the wire after the relay, the starter itself should work. The lack of rotation of the shaft is a command to disassemble it.

In order to carry out an effective repair of a starter with your own hands, you need to find a breakdown (malfunction) or identify its cause.

The most common reasons why the starter stops working well include:

  • failure of the retractor (traction) relay. As a result of this malfunction, the working gear of the bendix is ​​not fed to mesh with the flywheel ring;
  • wear of brushes. A starter is the same electric motor as many others, and electric energy is transmitted to the armature by means of graphite brushes, which wear off over time and need to be replaced;
  • bearing wear. With worn bearings, the starter can work, but this causes strong vibration and destruction of other parts of the mechanism.

In order to assemble the starter, it is strongly recommended: when removing the starter, lay out the removed parts in order of priority.

The "special" location of the starter, as well as the use of carbon brushes, leads to the fact that the body and all parts of the starter are heavily contaminated.

Regardless of whether it was possible to quickly find a breakdown, you should clean the starter and all spare parts from contamination, check the integrity of the windings with instruments and only then proceed with assembly.
