- immerse it whole in a container of gasoline and leave it there for several hours;
- without removing the starter from the container, turn the clutch gear several times for better flushing of the grooves;
- take out and dry the starter.
If, as a result of such a "not tricky" repair, the malfunction is not eliminated, you will have to remove and disassemble the overrunning clutch.
Starter repair with disassembly of the bendix is performed in the following order:
- Before disassembling the bendix, first of all, it must be removed from the anchor (look at the video below).
- Then very carefully flare the folded edge of the casing and remove it from the outer race.
- Then remove the springs and stretch them so that when they are free, they increase by about 10 mm.
- Next, it is necessary to wash all the parts of the bendix, the grooves of the outer cage in gasoline, and clean out the nicks and burrs on the working surfaces.
- Do not forget to lubricate all structural elements with engine oil before assembly.

A fully charged battery is required to test the systems to function properly. The mass must be connected to the body, and the "plus" will help to find the malfunction. When connecting the positive wire to the contact bolt of the retractor relay, it should work and push the bendix forward.

The "special" location of the starter, as well as the use of carbon brushes, leads to the fact that the body and all parts of the starter are heavily contaminated.

The starting device is necessary to start the internal combustion engine by untwisting the flywheel. Therefore, before removing the starter, it is logical to look for it near the crankshaft, that is, under the engine, from the driver's seat. The bendix engages with the flywheel, therefore the mounting holes for the mounting bolts are located on the opposite side of the starting device.
Depending on the design of this unit, the internal combustion engine and the layout of the units under the hood of the car, replacing the starter takes up to two hours. That is, it is removed in 20 minutes, at best.
There are options for fastening the body with 2 or 3 bolts, which affects the complexity of the process, respectively.
There are several options for removing the starter from the engine. The choice mainly depends on whether the car owner has a garage with a pit and free time so that the starter can be replaced on his own.
It is best to organize access to this unit from both sides by removing the lower engine protection, and partially dismantling the air cooling system, removing the battery. This is possible in a lift service or in a pit garage. However, even in its absence, repair of the starter is quite possible, but with an increase in labor costs and work time.
Before you remove the starter on your own, you need to drive the car into a hole in order to provide access to the engine protection mounting bolts from below.This thick-walled sheet steel part is fixed at 4 points and usually does not have any problems with loosening, as it is removed very often during vehicle maintenance. The replacement of the starter begins with the dismantling of this ICE starting unit, however, with the protection removed, it is convenient to unscrew only the lower bolt. The top fasteners are easier to unscrew from the top. To do this, depending on the layout of the units and components of the machine under the hood, you will have to remove:
- battery terminals (in any case);
- pull the battery out;
- dismantle the air filter housing, if necessary;
- unscrew the bracket on which the cooling pipe is attached.
After that, work continues in the pit:
- it is necessary to disconnect from the starter all the wires suitable for it from the battery, therefore the nut fixing the cable "+" is unscrewed, then the wire, which is suitable for the control contacts of the solenoid relay;
- unscrew the lower starter mounting nut with a key of 13.
Work continues from above, from the side of the car hood:
- unscrew two or one remaining upper bolt with a 13 key;
- the starter is retracted by the body towards the passenger seat so that the bendix comes out of the seat near the flywheel;
- this knot is pulled out through the top.
Depending on the type of internal combustion engine, the starter dismantling operations may vary:
- C-type engine - classic dismantling according to the above scheme;
- F-type engine - first, the starter mounting bolts are dismantled with their own hands, then the protection is removed, the rear engine support is disconnected;
- V8 engine - in the presence of 16 valves, the protection is removed, the starter mounting bolts are unscrewed, the right front wheel and the reinforcement of the exhaust manifold are dismantled, the rear engine support is removed.
Service station employees are familiar with such nuances, therefore, it is recommended to replace the starter by specialists.
In the absence of a garage, pit or in case of a sudden failure, the electric starter can be removed through the hood. The features of the process are:
- providing access to the mounting bolts by analogy with the above method (dismantling the battery and part of the air cooling system)
- the bottom bolts, the terminal on the solenoid relay and the nut "+" of the terminal are located by touch
- first, the lower fastener is unscrewed, then the middle one, since the centering sleeve is located exactly on it
Subsequently, the work time is slightly reduced due to the car owner gaining some experience. If necessary, a jack or manual homemade lifters can be used, for example, as in the bottom photo. This is useful if you need to remove the front wheel from the passenger side.
Thus, for in-line engines, dismantling the starter is, in principle, not difficult, even if it is carried out on its own. The battery must be removed in any case to ensure the safety of work. With a complex layout of nodes under the hood, operation of V-shaped internal combustion engines, it is recommended to visit a service station.

The starter motor plays an important role in the ignition of the engine. The electric armature, rotating, transmits the torque to the flywheel, thereby driving the engine itself.
To check and repair the starter, you must remove it. You can find it near the flywheel. Now let's start checking it. We take two thick wires and connect them to the starter. We connect the minus of the wire to the ground, and we simultaneously connect the plus of the wires to the control and free contact of the solenoid. In this case, you need to firmly hold the starter, which should "show" the drive gear and begin to rotate.
After we have completed these procedures, we can determine the nature of the breakdown by the behavior of the starter. If the starter does not show the gear, then the retractable contact (solenoid) does not work. To repair the retractor contact, it is enough to separate it from the starter, open it, while remembering the position of the plastic lever. Repair is carried out after cleaning all parts of the solenoid (Basically, the problem arises precisely because of the dirt inside the solenoid). Then we carefully check all the parts, replace the part if necessary.
If the starter shows the gear, but does not rotate or smoke comes out, then the anchor itself should be opened. Most often, the breakdown lies in the tight contact of the brush contacts with the armature contacts or in the malfunction of the bearings. Replace brushes or bearings if necessary. Check if the anchor is firmly on its axis. As you open it, you yourself will see the breakdown. There may be a case when the anchor gives a short circuit, you can't fix it with your own hands!
If the armature is smoking, then it is necessary to check the armature fastenings and the gear system. When assembling the starter, use only transmission oil to lubricate the bronze bushings, and for everything else, use a mixture of 50% Litola and 50% transmission oil.

We restore the electrical equipment of the car and again a miracle. For the driver it is a miracle - his car started, but for us it is the routine of an ordinary day. But right there, in front of the joyful driver, the car stalls again. We understand again - it turns out, under the valve cover, we see a picture of the oil starvation of the motor. The engine is seized. We call our tow truck and minders for help and rush on. Noble Pan Grzegosz pays for the work done and our tow truck remains to wait.
Meanwhile, the 95th DAF is asking for help on the Moscow Ring Road. Stalled. However, as usual. Diagnostics are not connected to any of the units. There is no power. We also identify damage to the motor harness. A short circuit in the most inaccessible place of the engine harness during the transition from the engine compartment to the frame has done its job - the engine ECU is dead. We pick up for repair, with the subsequent repair of electrical wiring harnesses, but it will be tomorrow.
We rush on to the challenge. Damage at Kamaz is insignificant. KAMAZ with crane installation Ivanovets, which does not turn off blocking of bridges. We determine the breakdown on the fly, having previously checked the power - the switching valve, namely the electromagnetic coil is in a permanently on position. Frozen. In addition, the owner has made an innovation in the cockpit. The power button, damaged by unknown forces, was previously reconnected to the 12-volt button for turning on the KAMAZ electrical equipment. He smiled, but still the owner gets off with only diagnostics and minor repairs, for which we do not take money. It turned out to be purely symbolic.
