DIY Chevrolet Aveo starter repair

In detail: do-it-yourself repair of a Chevrolet Aveo starter from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.

Before disassembling the starter, make sure it is working properly by the following simple checks.

1.Use a screwdriver to check that the drive coupling can move easily along the shaft.

2. Rotate the drive gear. It should turn easily relative to the coupling hub in the direction of rotation of the armature and should not turn in the opposite direction.

3. Connect the wires for "lighting" the "minus" terminal of the battery removed from the car with the starter housing. Connect the second wire with one end to the "plus" terminal of the storage battery, and the other - to the output of the control wire of the traction relay. If the traction relay is working properly, a click will be heard and the drive clutch will slide out. Otherwise, the traction relay must be replaced.

4. Disconnect the wire from the traction relay control terminal and connect to the lower contact bolt of the traction relay. The starter rotor should start rotating at a frequency of more than 6000 min –1. Otherwise, repair the starter.

You will need: keys "for 10", "for 13", socket heads TORX E5, E7, screwdrivers with flat and cross-shaped blades, pliers with narrow jaws, a hammer, a tester, a vernier caliper.

1. Unscrew the nut securing the tire to the contact bolt of the traction relay ...

2.… and disconnect the bar from the bolt.

3. Remove the three bolts securing the traction relay to the drive-side cover ...

5. Remove the two tie bolts ...

6.… and separate the stator and drive-side cover.

7. Remove the two bolts securing the cover from the manifold side ...

9. Inspect the manifold side cover. If the bushing in the cover is worn out or there are scuffs, pits and other defects on it, it is necessary to replace the bushing or cover assembly with the bushing.

10. Remove the rotor from the stator ...

12. Remove the planetary gear baffle plate ...

13. ... and O-ring.

14. Remove the starter drive arm support from the drive end cover.

15. Remove three satellites from the carrier axles.

16. Remove the drive shaft from the cover ...

17. ... and remove the drive arm.

18. Slide the stop ring over the drive shaft as shown in the photo.

19. Pry with a screwdriver and remove the retaining ring.

20. Remove the stop ring ...

22. Remove the ring gear of the planetary reduction gear.

23. Inspect the brush assembly. Check the height of the brushes in the brush holder. If their height is 7 mm or less, replace the brush assembly with a new one. Check with an ohmmeter the insulated holders for a short circuit to the case. Resistance must go to infinity.

24. Inspect the rotor. There should be no damage (nicks, scuffs) on the gear wheel and rotor shaft pins. The rotor manifold must be free of burn marks. Remove minor burns with a cloth soaked in gasoline and fine-grained emery cloth. Check the rotor winding for a short circuit with an ohmmeter. Resistance must go to infinity.

25. Check whether the armature of the starter traction relay moves easily, whether the contact bolts of the contact plate are closed (using an ohmmeter).

26. Check the drive clutch. The gear teeth should not be significantly worn. The gear should turn easily relative to the coupling hub in the direction of rotation of the rotor and should not turn in the opposite direction. If the gear teeth are worn or damaged, or the gear turns in both directions, replace the clutch.

27. There should be no cracks or traces of significant wear on the forks groove on the starter drive lever.

28. Reassemble the starter in the reverse order to disassembly, taking into account the following:

- lubricate the rotor shaft gear with General Electric CG321 silicon grease or similar;

During operation, the drive coupling does not need to be lubricated. However, it is necessary to clean it from dirt. Do not use agents to clean the drive that can flush out the grease in the drive coupling.

- lubricate the bearings (bushings) in which the starter rotor rotates with engine oil;

- use pliers to install the stop ring;

- before installing the brush assembly on the rotor, spread the brushes and fix in any available way (for example, rivets or small nails). After installing the brush assembly on the rotor, release the brushes by removing the installed clips;

- before installing the traction relay, apply a thin layer of silicone sealant to the surface of the relay in contact with the starter cover on the drive side
