Do-it-yourself clutch repair on a classic

In detail: do-it-yourself clutch repair on a classic from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.

It's hard to imagine a car engine without a clutch. The main task of an automobile clutch is to ensure smooth engagement of speeds by briefly disconnecting the engine from the transmission. Thanks to the clutch, the car can move away smoothly without overloading the engine and preventing premature wear of all its parts, as well as gearbox parts. Overloads are caused by the inertial moment, which is formed due to the rotation of engine parts with a sudden sharp deceleration of the crankshaft speed.

Replacing the clutch disc VAZ 2106as well as the clutch basket are usually produced at the same time. This process is not easy and requires certain skills and dexterity, so if you have only recently learned how to change spark plugs on your own, it is better not to risk it and entrust the work to specialists. Replacing the clutch can be done in two ways, with and without removing the gearbox, it is this less laborious and convenient way that we will use today. This work is carried out on a lift or inspection pit.

  1. Secure the vehicle with wheel chocks.
  2. Disconnect the universal joint from the transmission, as well as the clutch slave cylinder.
  3. Remove the reverse light switch wires from the contacts.
  4. Disengage the clutch cover from the side of the cylinder block, unscrew the yoke from the bottom side.
  5. Using the head on "13", unscrew the two retaining nuts that secure the gearbox mount, then remove it.
  1. Move the transmission as far as possible from the engine until the shift lever rests against the rear of the underbody opening.
  2. The transmission will hang from the front exhaust pipe as a safety net, install an extra support under the rear of the box.
  3. Grasp the flywheel assembly, and unscrew the 6 bolts securing the clutch basket using the key "13". Rotate the crankshaft constantly so that you have access to the bolts.

10. Then slide the basket towards the motor and remove the clutch basket.

11. After pulling it out of the clutch housing, remove the clutch yoke and remove the release bearing from the transmission input shaft.

Replacing the clutch VAZ 2106 with your own hands

Clutch parts are installed in reverse order. Before installing them, it is necessary to wipe the working surface of the basket, flywheel, and clutch disc with a clean cloth soaked in gasoline. Center clutch disc in relation to the bearing in the end part of the crankshaft, using a special mandrel that simulates the splined part of the transmission input shaft. When finished tightening the basket mounting bolts to the flywheel, pull the mandrel out, it should come out easily by hand.

Apply a thin layer of “SHRUS-4” grease to the splines of the input shaft, then install the box in place. After replacing the clutch disc VAZ 2106 completed, it is necessary to adjust the stroke of the clutch slave cylinder, it must be free.

Welcome!
The clutch is one of the most important parts of the car, because we use it to change gears. The main work of this unit is to disconnect it from the flywheel while squeezing the clutch and for further switching the box. This unit looks like two discs on top of one of which there is a clutch cover, and the clutch also includes a release bearing with a clutch assembly. But over time, one of the disks or the release bearing itself becomes unusable, which will cause them to need to be changed.

Note!
To replace the clutch, you will need to stock up on: a "13" wrench, and in addition to all this, you will also need to take two different types of screwdrivers (Flat and cruciform in this case), and you also need to stock up on a mandrel for centering the clutch disc, which in a car shop it costs literally 100 rubles! (You can see how this frame, which is mentioned in the article, looks like a little below in the heading: "For beginners!")

Summary:

When should you change your clutch?
During operation, the clutch in any car wears out over time, and the first signs of a worn clutch that the car will give are:

1. Increased noise which very clearly begins to manifest itself when changing gears on the car.

2. And also jerks can occur when starting off in a car, as well as they can occur while driving when you depress the clutch pedal, then turn on the gear and then when you release the pedal, the car jerks forward a little.

Note!
This is mainly due to the damper springs that are installed on the driven disc, and in the photo below they are shown by arrows. These springs are needed so that the clutch disengages smoothly and thus does not give discomfort when driving, and when these springs become unusable, when the clutch is disengaged, as mentioned earlier, a jerk occurs, which often has a very negative effect on the comfort when driving a car!

3. In addition to all this, in the event of a clutch malfunction, the effect of the clutch "slipping" may occur. This is when you drive a car and at the same time squeeze the gas pedal to the floor, and your car does not accelerate, but the engine speed rises sharply and even reaches the red zone, this effect is popularly called the clutch "Slips".

4. Finally, let's note one more effect called the "Leads" clutch. The first signs of this effect are as follows, let's say you engage the first gear and at this time the clutch pedal is still fully depressed, but even in spite of this, the car is rolling. This effect is called the "Leads" clutch.

Note!
Before starting the replacement, be sure to make sure that the clutch malfunction is not caused by any other reasons, because the replacement of this unit itself is very laborious and time-consuming compared to replacing the same clutch slave cylinder due to which it can also be observed the effect of the clutch "Leading"! (If you want to take a closer look at the malfunctions of one or another unit of the entire clutch system, then use the "Search" form, which is located in the upper right corner of the site, and hammer in the search for the malfunction that you exactly need, let's say: "The clutch slips" and you will get all the results in which the given combination of words was found)

Withdrawal:
1) First, to get to the clutch itself, you will need to remove the box for this. (For how to remove the box, see the article titled "Replacing the gearbox with a VAZ")

2) Next, after the box is removed, take the purchased mandrel for centering the clutch disc in your hands, and then install it in the center hole as shown in the photo.

Note!
The mandrel must be installed to the very end, until it rests against the crankshaft bearing!

3) Then, so that the flywheel does not turn, screw one thick bolt, which is indicated under the letter "B", into the lower left side of the block, and then fixing the flywheel from turning "A" with a screwdriver, unscrew all the bolts that secure the casing and the clutch pressure plate itself.

Note!
When unscrewing the bolts securing the casing and the clutch pressure plate itself, hold this disc by its casing so that it does not rotate! (Note that you only need to hold the disc by the casing, because if, for example, you grasp the thrust flange of the pressure spring, you can easily damage it, so only hold the casing with your hands)

4) Next, remove the clutch pressure plate together with the casing, but when removing it, hold it with both hands for its casing.

5) After removing the clutch pressure plate together with its casing, proceed to the removal of the driven disc, for this take the installed disc in your hands and then remove it together with the mandrel from the place where it is installed.

Note!
By the way! If you do not understand where you had to insert the mandrel earlier, then we indicated this place for you with a blue arrow in the photo just above!

Installation:
1) Installation of a new clutch is carried out in the reverse order of removal.

Note!
Install the new clutch carefully and be sure to install the pressure plate, center the position of the drive plate using a mandrel!

Additional video clip:
A detailed video clip was prepared especially for you, which clearly shows an example of replacing a clutch on cars of "Classic" production:

Signs of a faulty VAZ clutch can be both difficult switching on of speeds and a problematic start of the car's movement. In this case, it is recommended to replace the clutch disc and, as a rule, the clutch basket VAZ 2107, VAZ 2107 changes at the same time. These VAZ repair operations must be performed either in a pit or on a lift, since most of the work is performed under the car. At many service stations, according to the technology, it is necessary to dismantle the gearbox, but there is an easier way to replace the VAZ 2106 - VAZ 2107 clutch, in which dismantling the gearbox is not needed.

The procedure for performing work when replacing the clutch VAZ 2107, VAZ 2107

  1. The first step is to disconnect the propeller shaft
  2. Then we disconnect the contacts from the reverse sensor
  3. We unscrew the bolts securing the clutch cover on the cylinder head, and also dismantle the underbody cross member.
Video (click to play).

Well, at the end of the preparatory stage, using a head of 13, unscrewing two nuts, remove the gearbox pillow.

  • Using a pry bar, it is necessary to push the box to the opposite side of the engine, until the gear shift lever is at the rear edge of the hole in the underbody of the car.
  • As a result, it should turn out that the VAZ transmission unit should lie on the receiving tube, while it is recommended to substitute a stop so that the unit does not slip and sag.
  • The next step will be to remove the clutch basket from the flywheel of the VAZ engine. To do this, it is necessary to fix the flywheel using the same mount, and then unscrew the bolts 13 fastening the clutch basket VAZ 2107 - VAZ 2107 one by one.

After unscrewing the basket, move the basket aside with a pry bar and carefully remove the clutch disc, as shown in the photo.

Now pushing the clutch basket inward a little, align and pull it out.

Following the basket, dismantle the clutch fork, and replace the release bearing, which is located on the input shaft of the gearbox.

Actually, this is where the removal of the VAZ clutch ends. Now it is necessary to install the new parts in the reverse order and be sure to center the clutch disc relative to the crankshaft bearing. Centering is done with a special mandrel. With the correct position of the clutch disc, the mandrel should freely enter and exit the bearing

And in conclusion, we suggest watching a video of how it happens clutch replacement VAZ (classic)
