    In winter, I often cook dried fruit compotes. And what could be tastier than your own dried fruits grown in your garden ?! And two years ago I decided that all dried fruits can be made by myself - there would be a desire and an opportunity.
    This is how a household dryer appeared in our house. We did not read the reviews at that moment, did not choose a specific model, but simply came and bought what was in the store. There was no choice there - all August is the month of blanks and, apparently, they bought everything before us. I had to be content with what we have, fortunately, the price is not for the cloud.
    We purchased a dryer from the Polish company Zelmer, model FD1001.

    Moreover, the manufacturer assures that the drying has a high power of 520W, 4 capacious sieves (pallet), electronic control and convenient storage of the equipment itself. There was no doubt about the acquisition.

    And here is the drying itself. The pallets are stacked tightly for easy storage.

    Let's move on to the process of harvesting fruit for the winter. For this we need the fruits themselves. In my case, these are apples. The apples have to be cut thinly enough so that the fruits dry evenly without any moisture remaining inside the fruit.

    We put apples on pallets. Please note that you must not lay out the fruit too tightly. Otherwise, the air will have nowhere to “walk” and the drying may overheat. Be sure to close the dryer with a lid.
    The lid has holes for air circulation, so there is nothing to worry about overheating of the device.

    Let's see what happened to the fruit after an hour of drying in the second mode, that is, 500W. Let's look at each pallet starting from the top.

    The photo shows that the bottom 4 pallet is more or less dried, while the top 1 pallet is only slightly weathered.
    For a more even drying of fruits, it is necessary to periodically change the trays in places. And since I started drying fruits late at night, I will leave it on the first 250W mode for the whole night without changing the pallets. Overall, I got 10 hours of drying in the first mode without alternating pallets. Let's see what came of it.

    The bottom pallet is the 4th driest, the upper ones are slightly damp. Let's see a slice of apple cut.

    Such apples can already be left, but do not close them in a plastic bag, otherwise they may become moldy or some kind of infection may start in them. They are not wet, almost croutons. Usually I put such apples in a cloth bag and they are perfectly stored all winter.
    Here's how many dried fruits I got from one drying batch.

    Of course, this is not enough for winter, so we will dry it many, many times.
    Yes, when purchasing a drying machine, it seemed to me that the process would be quite fast - a couple of hours and the batch was ready. But the process of drying apples took me 10 hours, however, in the first drying mode (250W). Of course, in the second mode, the drying process will take much less time - 5 hours, but still it is not two hours. It annoys me a little. These are apples and 5 hours, and when I dried the plums, the drying took me three nights on the first mode. This is already a fairly long process and you need to be patient to get the result.
    The drying fan works quite loudly. The manufacturer promises a noise of 66 dBA. I do not have a noise meter, but when I dry fruit at night, I close the kitchen door.

    Otherwise, the fuse will blow out from prolonged operation (cause: overheating of the motor windings). A hair dryer will be the less preferred device.     We propose to improve the case. For construction you will need:

    1. A more powerful motor, cooler (fan) - for example, remove it from the system unit.
    2. Nichrome spiral with a resistance of 90 ohms. Ask for the length in the market. If you do not know, take a tester, measure the resistance of the cut, the length of which is known. Use the calculator to find the value you want. Why 90 ohms? To make the power 600 W, more precisely: 220 x 220/90 = 537 W. If you take a slightly shorter cut, the spiral will heat better, the danger of fire increases at the same time. As an option: take a hair dryer spiral, only turn on the elements in series to get a resistance of 90 ohms. Plus: quartz cross plates are already available.
    3. Heat-resistant plates, like a hair dryer. You can take instead of the indicated ones - a halogen lamp of an acceptable diameter.
    4. We recommend making a case of steel, buy a grid for tiers made of food-grade steel. No need to take a mosquito. It is not necessary to use welded electrodes for racks, copper wire with lacquer insulation, and other indigestible things.Only food grade steel, or aluminum (food grade).
    5. Take the body from canned food. Previously, tomato paste and olives were sold in large tin cans. As a last resort, roll the desired size from the sheet. Do not solder, riveting is permissible.

    Any craftsman can independently assemble. Safety precautions: Provide a temperature control mechanism in a secluded place. A bimetallic plate from an oil heater will do.

    A reflector is placed above the outlet in the bottom. The area of ​​the part overlaps the channel, guarantees: berries will not fall on the spiral, will not create a fire hazard. Protect the sides with a net. Fix the bimetallic plate with adjustment means to the reflector. Feed the spiral of the vegetable dryer through an impromptu relay. The snag is inertia. The reflector is made of sheet metal - wait for the constant clicking of the bimetallic plate. Make from steel 5 - 6 mm - inertia will be provided.

    For the distance between the tiers - make according to your needs. In most cases, five centimeters is sufficient for a vegetable dryer. The CPU cooler requires DC power.
