In detail: do-it-yourself Peugeot 405 repair from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.
In 1987 at the Paris Motor Show, Peugeot presented to the public a model under the index 405. The elegant, streamlined sedan car represented Peugeot in class D. It immediately received the prize as the best car of the year. In 1988, a five-door station wagon appeared with a spacious 1640-liter trunk. Later, an all-wheel drive modification was released.
The design of the 405 model was developed in collaboration with the famous Italian studio Pininfarina. The Peugeot 405 is a front-wheel drive car with a 3-volume body and a fairly spacious interior (wheelbase 2669 mm). Due to the long base with small external dimensions, the 405th stands on the road like a glove. He confidently goes through any turns, precisely following the trajectory planned by the driver, responsive to the position of the steering wheel and accelerator pedal.
The forms of lighting technology are especially captivating: slightly slanted headlights and exceptionally simple and at the same time elegant taillights.
The exterior and interior of the Peugeot 405 does not look very dated even today. The dashboard design and trim still look pretty good. The steering column is height adjustable, the dashboard is very informative. The seat is quite rigid with a full range of mechanical adjustments. The upholstery is usually fabric. However, some versions may have both servos and leather.
The air flow for each passenger can be adjusted individually, and the thoughtful distribution of air from the vents in the dashboard ensures a fairly good heat exchange in the passenger compartment.

The ergonomics of the interior space is fully consistent with the requirements of those years. Here are just such a signature Peugeot detail as the location of the horn button at the end of the turn switch pleases far away all drivers.
The visibility is good. Power steering (except for GL equipment). Peugeot 405 is famous for its excellent handling and cornering accuracy, for which it is considered one of the best front-wheel drive models in this indicator.
The level of safety is typical for vehicles of this class. Adjustable belt buckles, airbags (1994 only). The brakes have always been reliable. On the fastest versions, the rear was not drums, but discs, which increased their reliability during intensive driving. Later versions are equipped with ABS.
A wide range of modifications, of course, contributed to the popularization of the novelty. Even the interests of sports driving enthusiasts were taken into account - for them the MI 16 ″ with a 150-horsepower engine was released, and in 1992 it was equipped with a turbine, and the power increased to 196 hp. This modification was named Peugeot 405 T16.
The car is also characterized by excellent dynamic characteristics. The list of power units was opened by a 1.6-liter carburetor with a capacity of 75 hp, as well as its 92-horsepower two-carburetor version. In addition to them, the original range included 1.9-liter engines with 110 and 125 hp, and the 16-valve modification developed as much as 158 hp. (with it, the top version of the Peugeot 405 Mi 16 gains a hundred in 8.6 s, and the maximum speed reaches 214 km / h).
In the spring of 1988, the number of engines was increased due to a 1.4-liter 70-horsepower carburetor, 105-horsepower 1.9-liter injection, 1.9-liter diesel engine with 64 hp. and a 1.8-liter 78-horsepower turbodiesel.
In 1989, the 1.6-liter engine was equipped with injection, and the power increased to 89 hp. In 1991, the 1.9-liter injection engine was bumped up to 148 hp. A year later, there was a change in generations of power units, and the previous ones were replaced by injection ones with a working volume of 1.4-; 1.8- and three 2.0-liter capacity respectively 75, 100, 122, 155 and 200 hp. (the latter is turbocharged).The main gearboxes were mechanical 4- and 5-speed, which, since 1988, were supplemented by a 4-band “automatic”.
Front independent suspension type MacPherson, rear - torsion bar.
After restyling, carried out in 1992, the model slightly changed the appearance, the instrument panel and the torpedo, the trunk began to open up to the bumper, the interior became much more convenient.
The car lasted almost ten years on the assembly line. In 1995, it was replaced by the 406th model.
The Peugeot 405 has many versions and represents a rich offer from the manufacturer. It is a relatively original model, although many well-known solutions are borrowed from the cars of the PSA group (Peugeot - Citroen). To meet the new requirements for equipping the 405 with mid-range engines, Peugeot was forced to consistently implement a policy pioneered by Jean-Paul Paraire and continued by Jacques Calvet. This policy was based on the use of constructive solutions of the PSA group and expanding the supply in accordance with the demand. According to this concept, the versions to be equipped with less powerful engines were equipped with a 1.4 cc TU engine and a MA gearbox (previously used in Citroen AX vehicles), while other versions were equipped with XU engines and gearboxes. type BE, some varieties of which have been successfully used in cars Peugeot 305 (series 2), as well as Citroen BX.
The petrol engines are positioned in front of the vehicle's front axle and tilted back 30 °.
In January 1988, four new sedan variants appeared in the Peugeot 405 range, including the GLD and GRD versions, equipped with a very successful 1905 cc 51kW (70hp) engine. This engine was previously tested in the 305 as well as the Citroen BX. A Peugeot 405 equipped with this engine has a top speed of 165 km / h. The GLD and GRD versions differ from each other only in some features of the equipment, namely in the size of the tires. The GRD version can also be equipped with a power steering system.
Among the above four models were also the GRD Turbo and SRD Turbo versions, which were equipped with a 1769 cc XUD 7TE engine (derived from the engine described above). Thanks to a turbocharger (Garrett T2 or KKK type K14) with an air cooler, this engine develops 66 kW (90 hp). A Peugeot 405 with such an engine can reach a speed of 180 km / h. Gearboxes for both types of engines differ in gear changes.
In May 1988, the Peugeot 405 with a combi body appeared. These were GLD, GRD, GRD Turbo and SRD Turbo versions. In terms of the solutions applied, these versions are similar to their predecessors with the Sedan body.
The car's suspension uses proven design solutions. The front suspension is of the pseudo-McPherson type with a powerful lower arm (the mistake of the 309 GT model is not repeated). The front suspension elements are connected to a cross member made of welded steel sheets. The cross member is the element to which the forged steel arms (on each side), the stabilizer bearing and the steering gear (along with the rigid intermediate plates) are attached.
The steering gear of the non-power steering system has a 6-tooth drive gear and has a gear ratio of 23.9. The power steering system has an 8-tooth drive gear and a gear ratio of 17.8.
To facilitate the maintenance of the Peugeot 405, several original solutions have been applied, namely:
- the connection between the pipe of the exhaust system and the muffler is "double-cone", which greatly facilitates the replacement of parts;
- removal and installation of the clutch is possible without first removing the engine;
- in the support plates of the springs of the suspension columns, special holes are made for the cables holding the springs in a compressed state, which makes it easy to remove the shock absorbers;
- rear wheel bearings are replaced without adjustment;
- special holes are used in the brake drums, through which you can easily determine the degree of wear of the brake pads without completely removing the unit.
All versions received the new BE3 gearbox, derived from the BE1 gearbox. This gearbox features a new gear shifting scheme - reverse gear is opposite fifth gear.
In the SRDT version, the driver's seat cushion adjustment has been replaced by an entire seat height adjustment. Versions with a combi body received a special luggage cover.
The GRDT, SRD and SRDT versions use a remote control for headlight adjustment.
All models are equipped with a right-hand rearview mirror and a new steering wheel.
In the GLD version, the door upholstery is made of fabric, instead of the previously used upholstery - leatherette. Equipment for installing radio equipment is also used.
In versions GRD and GRDT with a combi body, special covers for luggage appeared.
The SRDT version uses a block-controlled right glass lift and an electrically controlled right mirror.
A new version of the SRD was introduced, which was characterized by the use of mechanical assemblies from the GRD version and the finishing of the SRDT version.
In April, a new version of the STDT was introduced, which received the equipment of the SRDT version, namely: anti-lock brakes, alloy wheels, remote control door locking, leather upholstery, heated front seats with electric control, walnut trim on the doors and on the dashboard as well as electrically lifting rear windows.
In October 1991, a special series called “Style” was launched, featuring a metallic finish, heated mirrors, tinted glass, central door locking and power steering.
In March 1992, two special editions went on sale:
- GLX version, based on the GLD version and equipped with a special fabric cover and “sports” wheel caps;
- GRX version, based on the GRD and GRDT versions and equipped with additional velor upholstery, central door locks, “sports” wheel covers and a front left seat with height adjustment.
Peugeot 405 cars have been modernized. The most significant modifications were:
- a new boot lid with a lowered threshold for accommodating luggage;
- a new type of salon;
- turbocharged engine 1905 cm 3 instead of turbo engine 1769 cm 3.
The knock of the steering rack always causes negative emotions in the owners of the Peugeot 405. Especially the manifestation of negativity comes after the owner finds out how much this repair of the Peugeot 405 steering rack costs from the officials.
And so, having weighed all the pros and cons, it was decided to try to eliminate this ailment with our own hands. There is time, hands grow from the right places - there are all conditions =)
After talking with the knowledgeable, I found out that either the support sleeve on the left can knock in my rail, or the repair kit on the right is rubbing off. I did not find any backlash on the left side, but on the right it was pretty much backlash! There is reason to believe that it is possible to carve the bushing out of secondary plastic.
So it was decided to do so.
First you need to remove the wheels and put the car on stands. Think in advance that the rail will have to be reached from the left side in the direction of the car. Park so that nothing gets in the way
Using a syringe, pump out the hydraulic fluid from the power steering reservoir
Then you need to screw the nut on the steering rod and on the steering tip
This procedure can be performed using a special puller, but if this is not at hand, we resort to using a simple hammer.
We recommend preliminarily treating all loosening parts with a WD-shear.
Next, we will work in the cabin: before unscrewing the cross-piece, make marks so that it is easier to put the steering wheel straight and the wheels straight in place later.
Now carefully unscrew the hydraulic pipes
For more convenient work, we make keys of smaller sizes
Farther. He unscrewed and took out the crosspiece from the bottom.There was no need to mark here: time marked itself, everything is rusty, where there are no slots.
In 405-ke, gear shift rods are attached to the steering rack. I do not advise knocking them down with a hammer and a guide, it is better to torment them with a key for 16.
We unscrew the steering rack itself
To remove the steering rack, you will have to unscrew this bracket
Now we take out the steering rack
Let's start disassembling the steering rack of the Peugeot 405. You may need a gas wrench to remove the steering tip.
With a chisel we carefully mark the tube of the hydraulic nose
Now remove the steering rod boot. It is more difficult with the "cap" - I had to use the chisel again. We unscrew the steering rods.
We unscrew and take out the support sleeve. Here you have to be careful, there is a spring, if it fires, you will search all over the garage to look for.
We remove the body of the worm. In order not to break anything, I had to try. The best fit was a montage.
Everything was thoroughly cleaned, washed and folded into a bag. I'll go to the turner tomorrow. Let's try to carve a bushing out of secondary plastic. There is no point in buying a repair kit, because it is enough for a short time.
Use a suitable mandrel to knock out the old sleeve.
The photo is bad, but the reason for the knock is visible: the copper-graphite bushing has worn out from old age.
These bushings were made of second-grade plastic for me: one is really big (it hangs on the shaft), and the second is too small. I had to pick up a file and then work with a little knife. I immediately grinded the outer diameter to insert the sleeve into the rack body. And then, having inserted it, processed the inner diameter a little.
Here you go. Now you can thoroughly lubricate everything with lithol (salidol can eventually roll up and stand in one place) and collect. Since I plan to ride a typewriter happily ever after, I changed all the rods, tips and anthers.
