In detail: DIY suzuki grand vitara repair from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.
I want to supplement my previous review, starting with a mileage of 110 thousand km, I began to eat up oil, first a liter per 10 thousand mileage, then sharply more and more than 500 grams per 1 thousand km, I drove up to 143 thousand km I poured it in, but I got tired of it and decided to take up the engine, at first I thought I could do it replacing the oil seals, but after checking the cylinders with the endoscope, the minder said no brother more and more serious than the piston, all the rings lay in a fur coat a hundred pounds and he was right, they removed the cylinder head head, pulled out the piston and the oil scraper rings were completely stuck, the oil scraper seals were also already oak.
The engine oil and automatic transmission oil were changed immediately upon purchase. Filled in original synthetic oil. The viscosity of the engine oil is 5W-30. After 1000 km, I don't notice the consumption of engine oil. Expenses for changing the engine oil amounted to 5,000 rubles.
I poured oil into the automatic transmission without replacing the filter, I want to ride like that, then replace it with the filter by the spring (when I first turn it on, there is a small kick, I don't feel kicks and jerks on a warm engine and in motion). The replacement cost 5500 rubles, with the replacement of the filter about 13 tr will be released. (including the price of the filter itself 6000 r.)
I poured Castrol SAE 75W-90 synthetics into the gearbox and razdatka, but according to the catalog the oil should be 80W-90, but for our winter under -50 it is not suitable.

The cause of the failure of the internal combustion engine J20 car Suzuki grand vitara
the fuel became of poor quality due to which the catalyst collapsed and sintered, as a result of which there was a decrease in the performance of the exhaust system and overheating of the piston group. Removing the catalyst did not correct the situation anymore. Compression and oil scraper rings are stuck. The thrust has disappeared, the oil consumption has increased sharply. Oil seals and valve cover gasket leaked. The engine was dismantled and disassembled for inspection and troubleshooting.

As a result of troubleshooting, the need was identified: replace the connecting rod bushings, replace the valve stem seals, replace the set of rings and restore the honing of the cylinder block.
The engine block was cleaned from dirt and carbon deposits, the honing of the cylinders was restored
and the assembly began. We installed the crankshaft in place, not forgetting to blow through all the oil channels. Cleaned the piston, and most importantly, the piston ring seating grooves from carbon deposits,
installed the rings and using a mandrel, observing the direction indicated on the piston, install the piston into the cylinders. Beforehand, do not forget to lubricate all rubbing surfaces with engine oil - these are main, thrust and connecting rod liners, pistons and cylinders, camshaft pastels, etc. which will ensure a normal engine start Suzuki Grand Vitara after assembly (not dry). After installing the piston group and pulling the crankshaft bed and connecting rods with the required tightening torque, we get to work - the cylinder head bulkhead (cylinder head).
We dry and take out the intake and exhaust valves, conduct a close inspection of the cylinder head for scratches, cracks, valve seats. If everything is in order, then we carry out cleaning, washing and blowing out the cylinder head, cleaning the valves from carbon deposits and grinding the valves. Next, we replace the valve stem seals and assemble the cylinder head. When disassembling and assembling, do not forget that we carry out the removal and installation of valves, springs, plates strictly in their places. After checking the mating surfaces on the block and the cylinder head for scratches, debris, etc. install the gasket and the block head. Tighten the block head from the center to the edges in three stages using the tightening torque specified in the manual.
Further, observing the installation marks, we put the timing chains, we install in place, after having washed and blown with compressed air, the front cover of the engine, the valve cover, the oil pump and the sump, after which you can install the internal combustion engine, etc. completing Suzuki Grand Vitara engine repair.
Prepare a wide basin, a stream of antifreeze will hit anywhere, but not into the prepared container. Pour fresh antifreeze carefully, as the radiator neck is very narrow. And don't forget to change the antifreeze in the expansion tank.
The oil in the axles - front and rear - is changed at one interval. Remove the filler plug before unscrewing the drain plug. This will simplify and speed up the procedure, difficulties may arise with the filler plug of the rear axle, very often the plastic washer turns sour here. A little warming up with a construction hairdryer will help to tear it off. The drain plug is equipped with a magnet, remove any remaining dirt and metal shavings from it. Lubricate the threads of the plugs with graphite grease, which will subsequently save you from problems with unscrewing them. The oil in the manual gearbox and the transfer case changes in the same way.
The transmission fluid in the automatic transmission is changed every 60,000 km. It is impossible to drain the fluid from the torque converter, only from the automatic gearbox housing. By the way, the washer is also disposable here. So that there are no questions about how much liquid is needed, measure the volume of the drained liquid and fill in a little less by 300-400 grams. You will add them later when checking the level. Just keep in mind that the transmission fluid level in the automatic transmission is checked on a warmed-up box. To do this, you need to drive about 10-15 km, and put the car on a horizontal platform in the “parking” position. In this case, the engine must not be turned off. The liquid level should be between the maximum and minimum marks for a temperature of 80 degrees C or (Hot).
These are the top-most marks on the dipstick.
The biggest problem for owners of the three-door "Grand Vitara" is the replacement of the timing belt on a 1.6 liter engine. To do this, you will have to remove the cooling fan, fan diffuser, unscrew a bunch of holders for wiring harnesses, unscrew the lower crankshaft pulley. Keep in mind that there is a crankshaft speed sensor at the bottom in the area of the pulley. Be careful not to damage it when tensioning the drive belts.
If your engine is equipped with a timing chain drive, you will have to go to service to replace the chain. When the engine was running, noise, metal crackling and clanging appeared - forward to the service station. Yes, it's expensive. But the consequences can be even more expensive.
The brakes on the car are disc brakes in front, drum brakes in the back. If you have an XL-7 with an automatic transmission and your driving style can hardly be called calm, then the front pads will last no more than 15 thousand kilometers. On average, they can cover 30,000-45,000 km. Front brake discs can handle three to four sets of pads and are not prone to wobbling. When replacing pads, carefully lubricate the caliper guide pins, as well as the places where the pads are inserted into the caliper bracket. This operation will help you avoid jamming the pads in the caliper bracket and will save you from the pads squeak when the discs are worn. Pay attention to the smoothness of the movement of the caliper guide fingers, check the integrity of the anthers and cuffs.
If the mileage is high, make sure the brake hoses are intact.
Rear brake pads last much longer, about 100,000 km. This should not relax you, because you need to inspect and clean the rear brake pads every 30,000 km by removing the drum. At the same time, check the rear brake cylinder (do not press the brake pedal when the drums are removed or there are no pads in the front calipers) and how the handbrake cables run. If you do not perform such procedures, it will be very difficult to remove the drums by the run of 100 thousand. Moreover, as a result of long knocking out of the drums, you risk breaking their geometry or deforming the rear axle shafts. When cleaning the rear pads, lubricate the axle shaft surface on which the drum sits. The biggest problem is replacing the rear brake pads: a bunch of springs and parts. It is best to replace first one side, then the other. It is better to change the brake fluid every two years.
Suspension and steering
Up front, all Grand Vitara models use MacPherson strings. The most expensive part of the front suspension is the levers, which are sold complete with ball bearings. Their average mileage in urban conditions is up to 200,000 km. It is recommended to change the levers together with the front suspension springs, which tend to sag for this run. The rear suspension, as well as the rear axle, also serve for a long time. Steering tips and tie rods reach up to 150,000 km. The only problem that may arise earlier is related to the power steering.
The amplifier return line, which is the cooler, is located on the front of the engine radiator. This tube has the property of rubbing against the clamps of the suspension. Therefore, more often check the power steering fluid level and the presence (absence) of a puddle under the front bumper.
MCP Grand Vitara, in my opinion, is very reliable and durable. Correct operation, timely maintenance and transmission will serve you for a very long time. The clutch usually lasts 100,000-150,000 km. The weakest link in the transmission is the front axle. Particular attention should be paid to its condition and oil change in it. Try not to "rip" the car if you are stuck in mud or snow, as there is no center differential in the Grand Vitara. For a long transmission life, it is recommended to connect the front axle only in icy conditions, difficult snowy roads or off-road conditions. If one fine day the front axle refuses to turn on, as soon as possible inspect the compressor connecting the axle and the air supply pipes to it. The most common malfunction here is the freezing of condensate in the pipes in winter. If the tubes are clean, the air swings, then, most likely, the front axle connection diaphragm, which is located in the gearbox housing, has lost its tightness.
1.6 l (94 hp) is fitted to the 3-door version. Has a timing belt that needs to be changed at least once every 90,000 km.
2 l (128 hp) is installed on the 5-door body.
Has hydraulic lifters, hydraulic chain tensioners. The engine is picky about the quality of oil, does not tolerate mineral oil. If, while the engine is running, you hear a constant clatter of hydraulic lifters and the rumble of chains, get ready to replace the chain. There were times when a worn and stretched chain would break, resulting in more expensive engine repairs.
2.5 and 2.7 liters (144 hp, 173 hp) gasoline 6-cylinder engines are of the same type, they have two camshafts per cylinder head and four valves per cylinder. To regulate the thermal clearances of the valves, hydraulic compensators are used. By the way, if the engine is used improperly, they wear out rather quickly.
2.7 liters are installed only on the Grand Vitara XL-7. Both engines are subject to rapid coking when using Russian gasoline.

The words "off-road vehicle" and "off-road vehicle" sound almost the same, but they are filled with different meanings. The buyer is mainly guided by the image, that is why the majority of inexpensive "jeeps" are "SUVs", rather awkward off-road. Suzuki Grand Vitara is one of the rare exceptions. The comfortable off-road vehicle that meets modern passive safety requirements has retained the most attractive features of its predecessor, "Suzuki-Vitara" - a frame structure, a reduction gear range and a low price.
But the inheritance also got some features, without knowing which you can ruin the car in no time, without even leaving the asphalt. Therefore, you need to choose a used "Grand Vitara" with passion, and use it wisely. In this case, 15-20 thousand dollars for a four-five-year copy will be a wise investment of money.

There are different types and methods of car body repair, applied depending on its condition. Further, the features of these works are considered on the example of the Suzuki Grand Vitara.
According to one of the classifications, body repair is divided into full and local. In the first case, the car body is completely restored, while local repair involves the replacement or restoration of individual parts. Another classification includes three types of repairs:
Minor body repairs correspond to the local one from the previous classification;
The external type is also called cosmetic. It involves exclusively painting work;
The overhaul corresponds to the complete one and includes the replacement of many parts, welding, restoration of the body and frame geometry.
It should be noted that overhaul or complete body repairs are very difficult and require specialized equipment, so they are usually performed in workshops. In addition, this type of road repair, therefore, preliminary assess its feasibility based on the damage and value of the car. In some cases, it makes no sense to restore the car, since the cost will be comparable to the price of a new one, if not more expensive.
To carry out these works, complex specialized equipment is required, represented by a stand or a slipway. These tools are used to apply multidirectional forces to the body. However, few users have such equipment, therefore, body restoration is rarely done independently.
This is the straightening of deformed body parts using specialized straightening tools. They require strict adherence to technology, therefore, experienced performers can do it. Straightening is usually performed by mechanical action, sometimes with the use of thermal. There are several technologies for these works.
There are several methods of such work, which are used to straighten dents when the paintwork is not damaged. They are based either on the pulling of the dented material, or on its percussion, or on thermal action. Most of them are simple enough to complete on your own.
This is the removal of defects in the paintwork in the form of chips and scratches. The technology of these works is also very simple, so they are within the power of many motorists who have no experience.
It is advisable for experienced users to apply paint and varnish material to the surface of the body. The paint is usually applied in three layers, having previously covered the unpainted elements.
There are several ways to remove corrosion. Usually, for this, the areas of the body affected by it are treated with various chemicals.
Body repairs are carried out on the basis of the damage identified during the preliminary inspection. Based on its results, the type of repair, types of work and methods are determined.
First of all, the integrity of the body geometry is assessed. To do this, it is measured and the data obtained is compared with the factory parameters. This technique is used for models with a monocoque body, which include the latest generation of Suzuki Grand Vitara. For frame vehicles, such as the earlier Grand Vitara, the integrity of the body geometry is determined by the frame. In the absence of damage, the geometry is limited to local or cosmetic repairs. In any case, the entire car should be carefully inspected, as this may reveal initially unnoticed defects.
This item is relevant for a complete repair. The early models of Grand Vitara begin to be repaired from the frame, while the new ones, first of all, restore the geometry of the body. Then the body parts are straightened or dents are removed without painting, if possible. Painting is the final stage of bodywork.
We will show you how to replace the front shock absorbers and springs on your own on a SUZUKI Grand Vitara car (Suzuki Grand Vitara). The video was prepared by the KYB company, known to many for the production of suspension parts, it is their shock absorbers that are installed on this car. The video is in good quality, filmed professionally from several angles, graphs showing the tightening torque, tools used, heads, etc. are superimposed on the image in the right places. There is no sound, but we do not need it. You will be able to carry out this repair on your own without any problems, having a standard set of driver's tools. Before installing new shock absorbers, remember to bleed them.
