DIY conveyor belt repair

In detail: do-it-yourself repair of a conveyor belt from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.

Conveyors are special mechanisms that move certain goods along special belts. This technology is very widespread and is used in many areas of the national economy.

There is a huge number of tapes that can be purchased on special sites, and here you can also find out all their main characteristics. In this case, it is imperative to check the quality of the connections and the technical parameters of the products.

This type of connection is only suitable for belts made of special polymer materials and certain types of rubber. There are 2 distinctly different ways to dock these products:

  1. Direct polymer soldering. For this, gear joints are made in both parts of the belt, which fit into each other, thus forming a continuous structure. Then the joint lends itself to heat or other action, which transforms the substance and the tape "sticks" together.
  2. Using glue. This method of joining involves applying an adhesive to the ends of both ends of the tape. Then they are superimposed on each other and are subject to thermal action, which allows you to glue the joints of the structure with glue.

This method is often used when repairing or arranging very long belts that cannot be laid with one continuous product.

Mechanical connection is fairly straightforward and consists of a few simple steps:

  1. First of all, the ends of the tape are aligned at right angles to obtain an even joint.
  2. Then special fasteners are mounted to them. In this case, you can dock the tape, both end-to-end, and by superimposing one surface on another. It depends on the purpose of the design and the desired result.

The connection is made using the installed fasteners.

There are several types of connectors:

  1. Bolt fasteners are special bolts that are screwed into holes in the overlapping edges of the tape. Fixation involves tightening the fasteners using a special tool.
  2. Tip Top connectors are used to repair tapes that operate under light loads. The connection is made end-to-end using special hooks and fixing bolts.
  3. Connection with alligator fasteners. They allow you to join tapes without the use of special tools.

Mechanical repair of these products is the primary option for correcting specific types of problems.

Methods for joining transport belts - in this video:

Types of conveyor belt damage that can be repaired with mechanical repair connectors RShM 45

  • longitudinal cuts of the conveyor belt
  • cross cuts, even if more than 20% of the conveyor belt width is damaged
  • through-breakdowns of conveyor belts of various sizes

In the case when the damage to the conveyor belt has a longitudinal character, and the length of the longitudinal cut of the belt is significant, then the fastest and most economically feasible way is to repair the belt by overlaying the lining from the loose conveyor belt over the cut, and fix it repair mechanical connectors RShM 45.

If the longitudinal cut of the conveyor belt is not very long, you can make a patch of repair material. Conrema or REMA TIP TOP Repair Strips and repair the conveyor belt using the cold vulcanization method, and for reliability, fix the cut edges with repair connectors RShM 45... For these purposes, we offer sets RShM for the repair of conveyor belts, which consist of mechanical connectors RShM 45, mechanical screw connectors RShM and necessary repair materials for cold vulcanization.

Transverse cuts of the conveyor belt, especially from the edge and if a cut of more than 20% of the width of the conveyor belt is a very serious damage - they increase under load and are repaired only by completely replacing the damaged section of the belt. But in this case, you can try to temporarily repair it with repair mechanical connectors RShM 45 setting them in 25 mm increments.

Through-holes of the conveyor belt also easy enough to repair RShM 45 connectors and the imposition of a lining of their section of a disbanded similar conveyor belt.

Application repair connectors RShM 45 both separately and in kits for quick repair of conveyor belts - this, in some cases, is simply an irreplaceable and excellent solution for eliminating damage to the conveyor belt.

The fundamental difference between connectors RShM 45 from reference locks Flexco Bolt Solid Plate 190 in the method of tightening the plates - the screw principle instead of the bolt - in the locks RShM 45 the nuts are pressed into the bottom plate of the connector.

There are actively advertised “in no way” locks MATO DR for conveyor belts - “analogue” of Alligator RS62, RS125, RS187 - But, disappointment from poor quality will last longer than joy from low price and only Flexco guarantees 100% result

The new quality of the improved formula of the TRS 2002 NEW glue makes it possible to recommend it for use for gluing conveyor belts based on EP and TK fabrics, whereas earlier, in our opinion, it glued only BKNL tapes flawlessly.

During the operation of conveyor belts that just does not happen. You've probably seen a lot yourself in your life, and you can tell interesting or even scary stories, but let me tell you a couple of incidents from your life. And then we will go directly to the issue of the repair of the conveyor belt, as well as the repair of the conveyor belt from the Elastic Trade company.

The client calls in the middle of the night and asks to repair the longitudinal cut of the conveyor belt. No matter what, there was a through longitudinal cut of the tape to a length of 9 meters. When on the spot they began to find out the cause of the burst, it turned out that the conveyor operator decided to clean the tail drum from the sawdust adhered to it with a shovel (the tape transported the sawdust) and ... as you probably already guessed, he decided to do this on the operating equipment, the shovel got between tape and a drum, and while he orientated himself and pulled the rope switch, the tape broke at a length of 9 meters. It would be funny if it weren't so sad. Production stopped for a day.

Why this digression, there are dozens of reasons for damage to the conveyor belt and several types of such damage. Some can be fixed in one way, some in another, and some cannot be repaired at all.

  1. Superficial cuts and damage to the tape cover.
Not the most difficult and dangerous type of damage for the tape. The cover is needed to provide protection for the supporting frame. If the cuts are shallow and short, then you can ignore them, but if the cuts are transverse and there may be a risk of scoring, peeling of the lining and further damage to the tape, then such damage must be repaired immediately.
  2. Punch-throughs and cuts in the tape
When transporting lumpy cargo, you always come across pieces with sharp edges, so that through damage to the belt is not uncommon. If the damage is small, then it does not affect the tape in any way, unless there are too many such damage. If the damage is large (as in the picture), then further operation of such a tape is dangerous. It is necessary to repair this tape. The optimal repair in this case is to apply a patch to the breakdown site. It is desirable to apply reinforced covers on both sides of the tape and vulcanize the patch. Carrying out this procedure requires a lot of experience and the availability of materials and equipment. The specialists of our company carry out prompt departure and repair of such damage as soon as possible.
Image - DIY conveyor belt repair
  3. Belt bead damage.
Such damage is also quite common. As a rule, the belt receives such damage when it comes into contact with stationary parts of the conveyor. First of all, of course, it is necessary to eliminate the cause of such damage. Further, depending on the depth and length of damage, you need to make a decision on the further operation of the tape. If the damage is not critical, then it is necessary to align the edge of the tape. The easiest way is to cut off the torn bead by smoothly leading the cutting line, in order to avoid sharp transitions in the width of the tape. Formation and vulcanization of a new belt bead is theoretically possible, but it is a long, laborious and, as a consequence, expensive operation.Image - DIY conveyor belt repair
  4. Longitudinal rupture of the tape.
This is where this article started. In the picture below, of course, the gust is not of the same length, but nevertheless, the tape with such damage cannot work. There are several options for repairing such damage.
The first and most beloved, but not the best, is the repair with the help of repair joints. Today, several manufacturers make quality repair joints for conveyor belts. This method can be considered a temporary solution, since a spill of material will form in the rupture zone, and there is a likelihood of relapse.
The second method is vulcanization with the application of a patch on top or on both sides of the tape. This is a rather laborious process that requires the possession of the necessary skills, materials and equipment. The process is expensive, quite long, but the result is impressive. Such a repair will allow the belt to be completed to the end of its service life without any fear.
The third method, when the tear of the tape has a long length, is to replace the damaged section of the tape. As a rule, we advise you to do just that.
Image - DIY conveyor belt repair
  5. Transverse rush of the tape.
It can be either in the middle of the tape or on one edge. There are many reasons for this impulse. As a rule, the transverse rupture of the tape is formed at the junction, depending on the number of gaskets, the breaking strength at the junction can be from 50% to 90% of the breaking strength of the tape, but the strength of the joint is never equal to the strength of the tape itself. In the event of extreme loads such as: starting the conveyor in winter at very negative temperatures, starting the conveyor with a load, excessive tension of the belt to eliminate slipping of the drive drum (when the drum is not lined), such loads can also occur if the belt is selected incorrectly and does not correspond to the operating conditions ... In this case, a temporary solution can be the use of repair joints. To completely eliminate this problem, it is necessary to make a new joint at the place of the break. If, when loosening the tensioning station, the supply of tape is enough to make a new joint, then one joint is made, if not enough, then an insert must be made, that is, insert a piece of tape and make 2 joints.Image - DIY conveyor belt repair

It would be nice not to tear the tape, but the working conditions are not ideal, and of course we cannot get away from the notorious human factor. To avoid big problems, you need to carefully monitor the condition of the tape and make repairs as early as possible.

If you are not able to repair the conveyor belt on your own, the specialists of our company are ready to go to you as soon as possible, "heal" your belt, and sometimes give it a second life.

Severe operating conditions, as well as the human factor, are often the main reasons for premature wear of the conveyor belt.Despite the different nature of the damage, in case of any signs of wear, it is prohibited to operate this working element. Such a prohibition is established in order to prevent dangerous accidents at work, as well as to avoid breakdowns of other components of the mechanism.

At different enterprises, the conveyor belt can be of different lengths and widths, therefore, it is simply inappropriate to change the entire canvas, if it has large dimensions. In such cases, it will be much more efficient and economical to produce conveyor belt repair, that is, replace the damaged area with a new one. In this case, both the rubber-cord tape and the rubber-fabric tape must be replaced, and the work itself can be done in one of these ways:

  1. Hot vulcanization
  2. Cold vulcanization
  3. By mechanical method

Actually, conveyor belt repair, regardless of the specific method, implies the complete removal of the damaged area. The damaged element is usually cut out. In its place, a new piece of tape of the same size is selected, taking into account the overlap. At the same time, the material for the manufacture of a new element must necessarily correspond to the characteristics of the previous one. That is, you need to choose a conveyor belt of exactly the same rubber compound and design.

Image - DIY conveyor belt repair

Perhaps the most effective way in which you can produce conveyor belt repair Is hot vulcanization. However, not every company can afford to use this particular method. The fact is that it is quite long and technically difficult. Its implementation requires not only compliance with certain climatic conditions, such as air temperature, but also the presence of special equipment - a vulcanization press.

The very method of replacing the canvas with hot vulcanization is performed using a special adhesive. By the way, adhesive for conveyor belts may have a different composition, depending on the specific manufacturer. Actually, the adhesive is applied directly to the butt ends of the tape sections, after which the glued elements are placed in a press and vulcanized there under the influence of pressure and temperature for some time, which makes it possible to obtain such advantages as:

  • Very high strength properties of the connection
  • Lack of all kinds of butt slots and holes
  • The ability to carry out repairs even in subzero temperatures

Image - DIY conveyor belt repair

Spend repair of conveyor belt by cold vulcanization a little easier than the previous method, since in this case the presence of specialized equipment in the form of a vulcanizing press is no longer required. Actually, due to this feature, this method is used much more often. However, it also has its drawbacks, for example, it cannot be used if there is a lot of humidity in the workshop and the air in the room is very dusty.

To complete this process, you will also need conveyor belt adhesive, but in this case it will need another 10% special hardener. Before the actual work, you need to clean the surface of the tape with a damp cloth. After processing, the working body must dry completely and only after that glue and hardener are applied to it, intensively rubbing into the surface. This mixture dries for 6-8 hours, and after the joints are rolled with rollers. Through these processes, the following can be achieved:

  • Reduce the time for site renovation
  • Get a high-strength joint
  • Avoid slots and holes in the joints

Image - DIY conveyor belt repair

Conveyor belt repair the mechanical method allows you to eliminate defects on the carrying body of the conveyor in an extremely short time without the use of specialized pressing devices. Moreover, this method does not require compliance with certain climatic conditions in the workshop. Mechanical joining of conveyor belts implies the use of only metal fasteners and appropriate tools for quick replacement.

The technological process of performing such a method is quite simple and includes only a few stages. Initially, the ends of all sections to be joined must be aligned, placing them at right angles to ensure an even joint. Then you should choose the method of joining: the tapes can be overlapped, or they can be attached at the ends using metal fasteners, for example, locks or bolts. This method has the following advantages:

  • Work is done as quickly as possible
  • No complicated equipment needed
  • Consumables are inexpensive

Conveyor belt adhesive, depending on the manufacturer, may have a different chemical composition, but its basic properties remain the same. Such a substance is capable of holding together not only rubber products, but also products made of polyvinyl chloride, polyurethane and nylon. Thus, the use of this mixture will make it possible to very reliably and quickly fasten almost the entire range of rubber products, including any belts for conveyor installations.

It is noteworthy that adhesive for conveyor belts It is used both for cold and hot vulcanization of both rubber-fabric and rubber-cord webs. After it is completely dry, it is able to provide a joint strength equal to 90% of the original, and the work itself on the repaired tape can be started just 4 hours after it was applied to the surface. At the same time, the glue does not require long-term compression - it is enough just to pass it with a roller or tap the joint.

But, conveyor belt repair using an adhesive mixture also has disadvantages. So, for example, it will no longer be possible to redo the surfaces after gluing, so you should carefully make sure that they are fully consistent in size and correct diligence. In addition, the already activated glue begins to thicken after 15-10 minutes, which significantly interferes with its application, therefore, it will be necessary to lubricate the ends of the products as soon as possible.

However, it is conveyor belt adhesive allows you to almost fully return its strength characteristics and reliably fasten the sections connected by it. However, both technological processes with the use of glue are laborious and are usually carried out by dedicated repair teams. By the way, all experienced craftsmen are advised to have a few pieces of tape with the appropriate characteristics in reserve in case of premature wear.

Repair of conveyor belts... The most worn out and most often repaired part of conveyors is the conveyor belt. Repair of the tape is carried out by vulcanization, gluing or replacement of significantly damaged areas.

Before repairs, the tape is cleaned of dust and dirt, and if moisture is present, it is dried. The boundaries of the cut part are marked and the rubber cover is cut off with a knife to the fabric base. The area to be repaired is treated with a metal brush, wiped with gasoline and coated with glue 2 times. After drying, unvulcanized rubber is applied, rolled with a roller and vulcanized in a press with heating at a temperature of 145-155 ° C for 15-20 minutes under a pressure of 0.09-0.12 MPa. A simpler and more commonly used method of repairing transport belts at enterprises is the method of stitching with raw materials. At the same time, an overlay of the required thickness is sewn onto the cut off place. To restore flexibility, it is advisable to skip the place with the sewn overlay between the rolls or tap with a wooden hammer.

Raw material stitching is also used to connect the ends of the tape. Butt joint of the ends of the tape is possible.

When replacing a worn-out belt with a new one, remember that the new belt stretches during operation, so it must be pulled out first. For stretching, the tape is thrown over the drum and for 3-4 days weights are suspended at the ends at the rate of 28-35 kg per 1 cm 2 of the section of the tape.

Repair of bucket elevators, chain elevators... During the operation of elevators and chain elevators, the most common malfunctions are excessive stretching or breakage of belt chains, grazing of buckets over the walls of elevator pipes, wear or breakage of buckets, uneven wear of gearbox parts, shafts, sprockets and drums. Belt repair is carried out in the same way as conveyor belts. Repair of elevator pipes consists in correcting minor damages, removing dust, replacing gaskets. In case of more serious damage to the pipes, the tape with the buckets is removed, the pipes are disassembled and the damaged elements are repaired or replaced.

Bucket repairs are carried out by correcting the shape on the template. Bucket bolts are installed with a washer inside the bucket, tightened with a nut and a locknut is installed to prevent loosening.

Repair of screw conveyors... The main defects of screw conveyors include damage to the turns of the auger and the casing of the chute. Crumpled and deformed screw turns are straightened on a mandrel with a wooden hammer or replaced with new ones. For the manufacture of new turns, steel with a thickness of 2-3 mm is used.

New turns are cut according to a template or according to markings in the form of rings, which are then cut and stretched to the required turn pitch. The prepared spirals are put on the pipe and connected to each other by welding, rivets or overlays with bolts. Coils are welded to the pipe or shaft directly or through strips fixed to the shaft.

The worn-out chute of the screw conveyor is repaired by installing patches. In places of the casing, which are worn out to a greater extent, it is advisable to install replaceable sleeves.

The main malfunctions of the conveyors and methods of elimination are shown in table. 17, bucket elevator malfunctions - in table. 18, and malfunctions of screw conveyors - in table. nineteen.

Why does the conveyor belt move to the side?

1. Stretch the belt so that it is guaranteed not to slip during start-up. Loosen until slippage begins. Then, gradually tightening, ensure that there is no visible slippage during operation. Slight slippage of the belt is allowed when starting the conveyor.

2.Using a builder's level, make sure that the frame is conveyor along the entire length of the horizontal branch is in a strictly horizontal position. A level check must be carried out on both sides of the conveyor. If necessary, adjust the position with screw jacks.

3. Using a tape measure, check the distance from the center of drum # 1 to the axis of drum # 2. The distances should be the same on the left and right sides. Adjust the position if necessary.

4. Check the position of drum No. 3 in relation to drum No. 2 in the same way.

5. Using a spirit level, make sure that all drums (Nos. 1,2,3) marked in the picture are also in a horizontal position. Adjust if necessary with appropriate adjusting bolts and jacks.

6. Carry out actions from item 1 to item 5 until all conditions are met.

7. Run conveyor... Let it run for 3 minutes if the conveyor the tape is shifting to the side, adjust it with a wooden handle in front of drum # 1. Mark the direction bias tape during work.

8. Change the position of the roller in front of drum number 1, so that would compensate creep in the opposite direction.

9. Perform start conveyor... Let it run for 3 minutes if the conveyor belt is shifting, adjust it with a wooden handle in front of drum # 1. Mark the direction bias tape during work.

10. If the trend towards sliding down decreased, go to step 8.

12. If the trend towards offset tape decreased, repeat the operation. 11. If the change in the position of the support roller does not affect the tendency to leaving the tape to the side... Change the position of drum # 2 to the opposite side care tape... Check within 3 minutes.

13. If the change in the position of the support roller of the drum No. 2 did not affect the tendency to leaving the tape to the side... Change the position of drum # 3 to the opposite side care tape... Check within 3 minutes.

14. If care tape remained, repeat the operations from step 7.

With us, your conveyor belt will work without interruptions!

Conveyor systems are widely used in many manufacturing processes. A common consequence of heavy use is damage to the conveyor belt, of which the following are the most common:

  • longitudinal and transverse cuts;
  • side slices;
  • fraying sides;
  • through breakdowns.

The appearance of one of the listed damages, even of a large size, does not mean at all that the enterprise should buy new conveyor belt. In most cases, it is sufficient to contact Holzer, who is engaged in servicing such equipment. Price services, although high, are much lower than the cost of a new tape.

Professional conveyor belt repair allows you to extend its service life by one and a half to two times. The cost of such service is much lower than price new product.

In addition, the timely repair of longitudinal cuts and other damage reduces the rate of destruction of the entire conveyor belt, minimizes the need for butt joints. A timely inspected and repaired system has no spills of materials, therefore, cleaning near such a conveyor is minimized.

Repair of the tape can be ongoing or recovery. In the first case, accidental damage is eliminated - cuts, breakdowns, breaks. This includes repair cross cuts and other violations of the integrity of the conveyor. Such work is carried out directly on the conveyor. Their purpose is to restore the integrity of the structure, the bearing / traction force of the belt.

Refurbishment is designed to bring the initial parameters of the protective elements of the conveyor belt to their original values. It is regularly needed by protective elements - covers and rubber sides.

Both repairs can be done in three ways: mechanical, cold or hot vulcanization. For rubber bands, the cold vulcanization method is usually used, since it does not require special equipment, and the process technology is very simple. Mechanical repairs require special fasteners, and hot repairs require special equipment.

Elimination of longitudinal damage is the most time consuming type of repair. These can be deep scratches, cuts, one or more torn cables. The longitudinal cut has little to no effect on the traction of the conveyor belt, but the integrity and load-bearing capacity is reduced. If the length of the cut is large, an overlay is installed, which is fixed in place of the gap with fasteners. This option maintains the elasticity of the tape while repairing damage. With a small cut, a patch is made, which is attached to the tape by hot vulcanization.

The cross cut is different in that it significantly reduces the pulling capacity of the belt, especially if it is not in the middle, but at the edges. If the conveyor continues to operate, then such damage will increase over time, up to a complete break. Therefore, if a transverse cut appears on the belt, immediately contact the Holzer Service Center in order to to order repair service.

Repair of through damage belongs to the simplest, but requires certain knowledge and skills. To eliminate them, it is enough to put a patch over the opening and fix it with fasteners or by cold vulcanization.

Timely restoration of boards conveyor belt is very important for conveyors operating in mines. The edges of such conveyors quickly lose strength, therefore, during the repair process, they are first impregnated with glue and then stitched with hooks and / or staples. Such processing makes the bead of the coveyer stronger and more durable.

tokarka, the beginning is bad, but there are PCP tapes, apparently. With a rubber, such a number will not work.

the tape is cut on my Habasit device with a diamond cutter on a homemade domestic roller with an abrasive coarse sandpaper, as a result, we have two halves with a uniform bevel in thickness, then we glue it on a special vulcanizer of the appropriate size

the thickness of the glued belt is equal to the original thickness of the belt

We have a lot of transporters. We work with belts with a thickness of 3.5 mm.
As a rule, “habasit” is also used for stitching.

The last unit was made in which the tape carries out both raw materials and dust with sand.
To avoid waking up, I pasted a patch over the stitching.
Slightly loose with kink on the drums.
                              While working.

There is a stripper for narrow belts.
                              I'll get there, I'll take a look.
