In detail: DIY Scandinavian-style apartment renovation from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.
Northern Europe is a mysterious area, known to most only for its harsh climate and sagas about brave Viking warriors. The way of life of the Normans for a long time remained a mystery to foreigners, but with the spread of the Swedish furniture chain IKEA around the world, interest in their unassuming way of life has flared up. With its simplicity and airiness, the Scandinavian style instantly gained immense popularity among designers and became one of the most relevant trends in apartment decoration. Basic characteristics and photos of such interiors are presented in this article.
Even one glance at any traditional interior is enough to determine in what area it was created. When furnishing housing, people, one way or another, repeat the landscapes, shades and lines that surround their houses from the outside. Perhaps that is why every detail of the Nordic design is so reminiscent of the Scandinavian Peninsula with its rocky breaks, icy fjords and snowy shores.
The color palette here is limited to winter shades - white, gray, dusty blue occupy almost the entire space. And only in modest decor, furniture and textiles are splashes of bright colors possible. As a rule, they are present on traditional carpets and embroidered patterns - these are red, burgundy, orange, blue and ocher-yellow threads with a natural touch of gray.
Natural materials predominate in Scandinavian design, with wood as the dominant element. Its lively texture somewhat dilutes the severity of the achromatic setting, giving the rooms a more comfortable look. In the modern interpretation, unpainted boards are used mainly for flooring, while furniture is often covered with snow-white enamel or laminated with a glossy white film.

Walls and ceilings, which are standard for northern European interiors, are perfectly flat and clean whitewash (painting) of snow-white or gray, less often white brickwork, gray-blue wallpaper with a geometric print, or light wood panels. On the ceiling, whitewashed beams may occasionally be present - for example, if it is a country house, an attic or a high room with an unusual layout.
Special attention should be paid to the windows. In view of the short daylight hours and the lack of sun, the Scandinavians almost never cover them with curtains or even light curtains. However, for those who still need privacy, in the evening and at night, you can use opaque tulle or dense monochromatic gray curtains. The window openings themselves are usually quite large, and the frames with thin partitions are painted white.
Regardless of the area, a Scandinavian-style living room is always something spacious, light and airy. Snow-white finishes, warm wooden floors, comfortable furniture and high-quality textiles give even the smallest room a fresh and well-groomed look.
For the upholstery of the sofa and soft armchairs, good-quality fabrics made of wool, cotton and linen are used, sometimes with a slight admixture of synthetics. It can be dense jacquard with diamond and triangular patterns, weaving that resembles burlap, various pile and velvety textures - velor, velvet, velveteen.
Given the cold climate, carpet is often laid on the floor next to the sofa. The most appropriate are plain options with a fluffy pile of medium height (imitating the skins of northern animals), as well as woven products with ethnic Scandinavian patterns. Also, bright decorative pillows, knitted blankets and other "warm" hand made will not be superfluous.
The Scandinavian-style kitchen exudes cleanliness and coolness. Everywhere there are perfectly smooth surfaces, facades sparkling with snow-white lacquer, stone countertops, mirror steel of appliances and accessories, brickwork or patchwork tiles on the apron.
Light parquet or porcelain stoneware on the floor, wooden table, stools, hanging shelves add warm shades to a strict winter interior. In order not to freeze during cooking, a woven path is often laid on the floor in a narrow kitchen, and a small carpet with characteristic patterns in the dining area.
The maximum bright light in a Scandinavian kitchen is provided by an open window and numerous bulbs that hang everywhere without shades. For apartments in metropolitan areas where the sun rarely comes in, this is a really great idea.
The spaciousness and openness characteristic of the Nordic interior is also reflected in the sleeping room. White walls, a glossy wardrobe of the same color (or gray, like a rock), a simple bed with a low headboard and the complete absence of any frills are the best option for those who prioritize convenience and practicality.
The atmosphere in this discreet achromatic bedroom is created by details - bleached boards and a fluffy carpet on the floor, light curtains falling in vertical folds, several themed framed paintings, fresh bedding, soft woolen bedspreads, many pillows.
As a decor and at the same time romantic evening lighting for a Scandinavian-style bedroom, electric garlands with large bulbs hung on the walls can be used. Preference should be given to the shade "warm white" - this way the room will look more comfortable and softer than when illuminated with cold or colored colors.
Decorating a nursery in a Scandinavian style is a universal option. It is equally suitable for both girls and boys, ideal for children of different sexes and does not lose its relevance as the inhabitants grow up. Such a basic, but at the same time solid design lends itself perfectly to all sorts of modifications and additions - just by changing the curtains and adding a few new items, you can create a marine, puppet, fairytale style or equip a discreet room for high school students.
Natural materials in decoration, an abundance of wood and white-gray interior colors allow you to show great ingenuity in the little things - to choose an individual decor, interesting textile elements (upholstery of sofas, bedspreads, cushions). A slate board, a section of the wall painted with a special dark gray paint for chalk drawings, black and white wallpapers and pictures fits very well in this style.
The corridor of a Scandinavian-style apartment, as a rule, leaves a pleasant impression with its cleanliness and neatness. The snow-white background of the walls, ceiling, cabinets with black and white or gray splashes visually expands the space. Due to this design, the hallway looks large and light enough.
As for the materials, the most practical solution for the floor is porcelain stoneware, tiles like gray stone, checkerboard, in small diamonds, patchwork; on the walls - whitewash, white lining or brickwork of the same color, white matte ceiling.
Northern cleanliness and freshness - what could be better for a bathroom? In the water treatment room, the Scandinavian style shows its best: it is here that the snow-white gloss of ceramics, surrounded by glass and wood, brilliantly conveys the features of Nordic nature.
Walls in a stylized North European bathroom can be either painted white or faced with shiny hog-format tiles (rectangular, imitating brick protrusions) or tiles with soft ethnic patterns - patchwork. For the ceiling, it is best to choose a matte film - unlike painting, it is not afraid of moisture.
Furniture can be made of plastic, laminated to light wood, stone or white lacquer. This setting goes well with all modern plumbing options.
In the photo gallery you will find many interesting options for decorating apartments in the Scandinavian style. The rooms, united by a common design idea, look modern and comfortable. At the same time, each of the functional areas - kitchen, living room, bedroom, nursery, bathroom - slightly differ in the details of the furnishings. The Scandinavian interior is ideal for both large and small apartments, as well as trendy modern studios - any space in this design will appear visually wider, lighter and more spacious.
There are probably as many styles of interior decoration today as there are styles of clothing. There are as many ways to create a unique look for your home now as there are ways to dress in an original way. But if you are not a fan of pretentious outfits, you can “dress” your home in unpretentious but elegant shapes and colors of the Scandinavian style.
The history of this trend dates back to the 18th century and is closely connected with the name of the Swedish king Gustav III, who patronized the development of art, science and culture. With his light hand, the Empire style interior style, popular in Europe, took root in its northern part. But under the influence of national and geographical characteristics, it has noticeably changed and acquired characteristic features.
Throughout the 19th century, the so-called "Swedish Empire" was more and more modified, adapting to the climate conditions and the needs of the inhabitants of these harsh lands. And since their main priorities were comfort, safety and warmth, various decorative trinkets and luxurious materials gradually disappeared. They were replaced by simple functional solutions, not devoid, however, of grace and beauty.
By the middle of the XX century, the term "Scandinavian style in the interior" appears in print, and its illustrative examples are recognized by the general public. Since then, this unusual direction has not lost its popularity.
Decorating an apartment in a Scandinavian style involves working out such aspects of the home as light and space. At the same time, it is not necessary that the room be large - even a Scandinavian-style studio apartment gives the impression of being spacious thanks to design techniques.
It is the play with light that allows you to achieve the impression of lightness, therefore, special attention is paid to windows, an artificial light source, as well as the color of the floor, ceilings and walls. The main color here is white, which can both expand the space and draw attention to the rest of the interior elements.
Another characteristic feature of the Scandinavian style is laconicism. This feature goes back to such a trait of the mentality of the northern peoples as the love of functionality. Every thing, every piece of furniture or decoration serves its purpose. Therefore, in such an apartment there is nothing superfluous, everything has, in addition to decorative purposes, certain functions. For example, graceful glass vases, in addition to decorating and storing flowers, serve as "ray traps", helping to capture and diffuse sunlight.
It is also worth mentioning the use of natural materials and colors in the interior as an important feature of the style. The design of the apartment in the Scandinavian style does not imply an abundance of objects made of synthetic materials in bright unnatural colors. Instead, fans of the style stick to calm plant palettes and natural raw materials - wood, metal, clay, etc.
The combination of these factors creates a unique atmosphere of discreet coziness, freshness and convenience.
Renovating a Scandinavian-style apartment is, among other things, a great way to save time and money. This democratic style is just designed for a modern person who values his comfort and resources, therefore, ultra-fashionable expensive materials and pretentious solutions are not used in it. An interior in this style may well be embodied with your own hands in an ordinary city apartment.
An apartment in a Scandinavian style is, first of all, a bright room. The most suitable solution for this aspect is to cover the walls and ceiling in white. Whether it will be wallpapering or painting, you decide.
For the floor, wood is usually used in the form of laminate, parquet or solid wood, which can be quite expensive. Therefore, apartments often use linoleum with a pattern that matches the texture of the tree.
In the decoration of windows, Scandinavian designers also prefer to use wood, however, modern plastic double-glazed windows are in perfect harmony with the general mood, without interfering with sunlight filling the room.
The elegant minimalism of the Scandinavian style is exactly what is required in a small apartment of a city dweller. Various options for simple furniture that regularly perform their basic functions are what will make your home cozy without overloading it. Currently, a large number of models of sofas, transforming beds have appeared, allowing you to save room space.
If the furniture is aged in neutral calm shades (black, gray, wood colors, etc. are preferred), it is worth adding a few bright decorative elements to it, and the interior will sparkle with cheerful colors. These decorations - pillows, blankets, colorful rugs, will add an element of unique charm and complement the atmosphere of home comfort in your apartment.
You can find examples of interior design in the Scandinavian style in the photo at the end of the article.
The owners of the apartment, Yuri and Karina, arranged their apartment on their own. The couple had a desire to make the most of the space and create a light and airy interior. And how they did it, read our blog NEST - Renovation without a designer: Scandinavian style kopeck piece project.
The owners of the apartment managed to do without redevelopment. The bathroom was only combined in order to organize storage space for household chemicals and put a washing machine. The guys demolished the walls in the apartment and rebuilt in the same places new, more even ones, made of foam blocks.
When choosing materials for decoration, they adhered to the "golden mean" - domestic mixed with foreign ones, budget ones - with more expensive ones. Laminate was laid on the floor in the hallway and in the rooms, tiles were used in the kitchen and in the bathroom, and the patchwork tiles for the accent wall in the bathroom were ordered from Spain. Stretch ceilings in all rooms.
Since the apartment is not very large, it was decided to paint all the walls in a neutral light gray tone. This solution became the perfect backdrop for bright accents. Only one wall, which is at the dining table, has been papered with brightly printed wallpaper.
But the main feature of this apartment is ideally thought out storage systems. Bed - with a lifting mechanism for seasonal items. And above the front door is a mezzanine, where tools, a router and a doorbell are kept.
And on the balcony there is a pouf, under which there is another storage space. There is a bench by the dining table in the kitchen that opens like a chest. There young people keep their board games.
And a couple of life hacks to save space and perfect order: under the kitchen set, the guys provided a place for a robot vacuum cleaner in advance, and instead of one of the kitchen drawers, they installed a sliding ironing board.
The owners say that the main element of the decor is the picturesque view that opens from the bedroom window. Yuri and Karina wanted to beat him somehow profitably, and the solution was a kind of "frame" of wardrobes and a place for rest.
As a result, all repairs "from scratch" lasted about 8 months. The budget that was spent amounted to 3 million rubles. This is taking into account the fact that absolutely everything has been changed, from pipes and wiring to finishing and decor.
The Scandinavian style has become one of the most beloved styles in Russia in recent years. This is largely due to the fact that we, like the Scandinavians, know what a long winter is, a lack of light, small areas and the need to organize competent storage systems. The Scandinavian style is able to solve all these problems and is able to do it in style.
We have visited many people who have furnished their apartments according to Swedish aesthetics many times, and today we decided to see how the spaces differ from each other with the same style. In the first part of the article, we looked at the houses of families with children, and this time we will go to couples who are still living together. All our heroes are united by the fact that they independently purchased their two-room apartments (however, one heroine turned a one-room space into a two-room apartment) and equipped them without the participation of a designer. This proves once again that the Scandinavian style is subject to many: even if you do not have a specialized design education, with proper study of the style rules, you can create Swedish-style comfort at home.
What apartments we will consider:
- A bright 50 m² apartment on Ilyich Square for economist Karina and her husband Yuri.
- Scandinavian apartment of 40 m² in Krasnogorsk for economist Yana and engineer Anatoly.
- Cozy Scandinavian kopeck piece 47 m² in Krasnogorsk for photographer Elena and presenter Alexey.
There is a hallway in almost every house - it is she who creates the first impression when entering the house. All our heroes have thought of this space and made it interesting and functional.
1. There is one very unexpected detail in Karina and Yuri's apartment - a bright front door. It is she who sets the mood for the gray-white interior.
The blue front door was my dream. We made a bright door from the inside so as not to "injure" the neighbors. And the invariably bright color adorns our hallway and makes us happy when Yura and I are going to work or, on the contrary, returning home.
2. The entrance hall in Yana and Anatoly's apartment is black and white with geometric tiles on the floor. A rather spacious dressing room is hidden behind glass doors, where all the things of our heroes and household appliances can be found. The Home Sweet Home poster at the door serves more than a decorative function: it also hides the electricity shield.
3. The entrance hall of Lena and Alexei is a narrow corridor, on one side of which there are wardrobes and hangers, and on the other, a door to the bathroom. The color of the walls is not the most traditional for the Scandinavian style - coffee.
All kitchens are united by functionality and white color, so characteristic of the Scandinavian style.
1. Karina's kitchen area is 9 m2. It was for this room that the heroine thought of hiring a designer, but in the end she managed it herself. The kitchen set from Stylish Kitchens fits into a built-in hood, wine collection and even an ironing board. The turquoise table for the kitchen was made by the craftswoman Daria Geiler: as in the case of the colored front door, one bright accent sets the mood for the whole room.
2. Yana and Anatoly's kitchen area is only 5.5 m2. Although the room is devoid of natural light, it does not look dark or gloomy. Artificial lighting does its job well. All appliances are built-in. In the cabinet opposite the hood there is a refrigerator and an oven, and on the bottom left is a washing machine. Yana says that due to the fact that the cabinets are made right up to the ceiling, she still has a lot of free space that can be filled if necessary.
3. In Lena and Alexei's apartment, the kitchen is combined with the living room, dining room and study area. By removing the extra walls, the guys got a single large space that solves many tasks. The kitchen was ordered from IKEA.
One of the rooms in a two-room apartment is traditionally assigned as a bedroom. All our heroes did this.
1. Karina and Yuri's bedroom area is about 15 m2. Our heroes have thought out a lot of storage space in this room: a wardrobe, bookcases and a place under the bed. Karina's long-standing desire is also realized here - a wide window sill on which you can sit.
As you may have noticed, in the hallway and kitchen, the main accents are turquoise, while here they are sunny yellow. Karina repainted the bedside tables herself.
2. Initially, the apartment was a rectangle without walls with two large windows. Yana was faced with the question of how to harmoniously organize the space and delimit the zones. I really wanted to allocate a separate bedroom with a window for 40 m2, but it would block all the natural light in the kitchen. However, it was decided to sacrifice sunlight in favor of a place where you can retire. This is how a separate bedroom of 8 m2 appeared. It accommodates a 1.6 m wide bed, a roomy chest of drawers and a small bedside table.
3. Lena and Alexei's bedroom is done in calm spring colors. Our heroes saw the headboard from the blind doors on Pinterest and made it themselves, painting it in the same color as the bedside tables. There are drawers under the bed and a wardrobe by the door.
1. Karina and Yuri have a kitchen as a living room. They left the second room for the future nursery and have not yet made it furniture.
2. Yana and Anatoly have not yet fully equipped the living room. There is a lack of detail and painting on the wall. However, near the window overlooking Krasnogorsk there is a dining room, which can be easily attributed to the living room.
3. As we have already said, in the cozy Scandinavian two-room apartment of Lena and Alexei, one room combines several zones at once. Lena and Lesha are very fond of receiving guests, so they bought a round table that unfolds.
1. The most interesting visual solution in Karina and Yuri's bathroom is an accent wall with patterned tiles. And the practical one is a device for drying clothes over the bathtub.
2. Yana's bathroom differs from the general style of the apartment. It is made not in a Scandinavian style, but in a modern, pop-art style. It all started with a bright yellow alarm clock, which fell in love with the landlady. The alarm clock was supplemented with bright details in the form of a rug, towels, a poster "We can do it" (friends joke that this is the perfect slogan for placing in the toilet) and a red curtain. It is worth noting that the toilet bowl and brush are suspended. This solution allows for faster cleaning.
3. The bathroom in Lena and Alexei's apartment is separate. Our heroes believe that they made a mistake with the choice of tiles: they are too easily soiled and difficult to maintain. Initially, they made white seams, which very soon got dirty, and Aleksey himself reworked them.
In the restroom, niches are thought out for storing household chemicals and equipment.
Walking through the three Scandinavian apartments of young couples, we can conclude that despite the fact that they are decorated in the same style, all rooms look very different: Swedish aesthetics makes it possible to experiment, add bright colors and create coziness in any area.
Simplicity, minimalism and functionality - these three principles of interior design originated in Denmark, Norway, Finland and Sweden after World War II. The governments of these countries decided that comfortable, cozy, beautiful housing should be available to everyone. In this vein, design styles began to emerge in these countries. They reached a special heyday in the 50s of the last century. It was then that the concept of "Scandinavian style" appeared.
The Scandinavian style assumes the predominance of white, and the rest of the colors should be an unobtrusive addition. Nevertheless, natural lines, simplicity of furnishings can be easily mixed with a colored sofa and a bright spot of the pillow. At the same time, no matter how the sofa stands out, the rest of the objects around it will persistently reflect the Scandinavian style, emphasizing its functionality and immediacy.
However, any construction, any piece of furniture can become a bright spot. You yourself can determine what exactly will stand out in the calm, almost discolored northern interior.
It is not surprising that the Scandinavian style quickly became so popular: following its canons, it is very easy to create an elegant interior with a shortage of living space and budget. Today, together with Timur Abdrakhmanov, we will tell you how to make repairs in the Scandinavian style and save money.
Open space permeated with light and air is the main concept of the Scandinavian style. But it requires aesthetics: ceilings and walls must be perfectly flat - this finish will require significant funds. However, you can save even here. The options are:
- leave part of the brick wall as it is, only slightly leveling;
- sheathe the walls with ordinary clapboard and paint it white;
- do not make any additional structures on ceilings and walls.
Natural materials prevail in Scandinavian apartments. Wood, preferably rough, untreated, lends the cold white and gray interior a homely feel. But modern materials, perfectly imitating the texture of wood, also successfully fulfill this role. This can be a significant source of savings.
Floor decoration ideas: light wooden (can be painted) from the floor slats, laminate, linoleum, ceramic tiles.
Wall finishing options: plastered and whitewashed (painted), upholstered with clapboard, sheathed with painted plywood.
Doors: glass sliding doors or generally a free wide opening without doors, so that nothing impedes the spread of light and air.
In a Scandinavian interior, these are open shelves and racks instead of expensive cabinet furniture. Now there are many innovative storage systems on sale, the fashion for which came along with IKEA stores. For example, the versatile open cabinet systems make it possible to conveniently and elegantly place numerous items in the interior.
They are inexpensive, assembled on their own, but at the same time, they are a new generation of ergonomics. You can arrange the filling of the cabinet at your discretion, fixing hangers, shelves and drawers in any order. You can add or change something at any time.
Open shelves and racks are also the basic principle of Scandinavian style. This is an opportunity to express your individuality by placing your hobby in plain sight, and at the same time get rid of the clutter and chaos of closed cabinets.
There should be a lot of light - both natural and artificial. To increase the amount of daylight, windows are draped with only very light sheer fabrics, without heavy curtains of fine silks. Artificial light is individual spotlights, sconces, floor lamps. Expensive chandeliers don't belong here.
In the Scandinavian interior, there are no trinkets and frills that increase the cost of finishing: moldings, ceiling plinths, decorative stones and others. Nevertheless, there are a lot of possibilities for individualization. Due to the color, texture and decor.
Despite the monochrome color of the room itself, bright accents make the interior lively and boring. White and gray backgrounds perfectly combine textures and colors.
Decor in a Scandinavian style - these are photographs and posters, live plants. Handmade items give a special home comfort: bright pillows and blankets, knitted rugs and tablecloths, embroidered napkins.
Textiles are simple and laconic. These are natural fabrics, plain or with a discreet ethnic print. For example, linen covers for furniture.
A sample of furniture for the Scandinavian style - the assortment of the IKEA store. This is inexpensive and comfortable furniture for universal use or modular: sofa beds, console tables, folding tables, chairs and armchairs. Furniture is present in minimal quantities. Give preference to items made from natural materials, lightweight structures with legs instead of massive solid platforms.
The use of modern materials is quite allowed: plastic, metal.
Vintage and craft furniture are in fashion. So you can return something from the cottage or make unique things with your own hands. This could be, for example, a workspace for your brand new Macbook in the form of a simple board, one side of which is attached to the wall, and the other just rests on a metal leg.
