Do-it-yourself webasto land rover freelander 2 repair
In detail: do-it-yourself repair of webasto land rover freelander 2 from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.
Are you here »LAND ROVER FREELANDER II Owners Club» Diesel Engine »Webasto: removal, disassembly, diagnostics, repair, assembly.
In order to remove it, you need to unscrew the muffler and six bolts: three under the key and three under the star.
I don’t remember two bolts of 8 mm or 7 mm!
three screws under a star 1.24 it seems!
Diesel Land Rover Freelander 2equipped with a heater from the Webasto company.
This device provides a quick start of the engine at negative temperatures. Starting the engine in cold weather is usually quite difficult, but the heater makes this process quick and hassle-free. The use of a heater reduces the wear of many engine elements, since abrasion and destruction of parts more actively occurs at low temperatures.
The Webasto heater uses fuel from the car's tank for its own purposes, but an economical burner minimizes this consumption. After the Land Rover Freelander 2 engine has started working confidently, the heater does not turn off and continues to heat the interior while consuming a minimum amount of fuel.
Heater Webasto performs the following functions:
Prepares the engine for a cold start
Provides maximum power in a short time
Reduces fuel consumption
Creates a comfortable temperature in the cabin
In a well-heated interior, the windows are not covered with condensation, which contributes to a safe ride. The heating system can be started from the Land Rover Freelander 2 cabin, using the radio remote control or by sending an SMS message. After the heater is turned on, the automatic system switches it to automatic mode. During the operation of the Webasto heater, various malfunctions may occur that can only be eliminated in service conditions.
Video (click to play).
In rare cases, the electronic unit blocks the operation of the heater according to a certain algorithm, and it can be turned on only after the blocking has been removed. This procedure is carried out under the conditions of service on special technological equipment. The blockage is associated with a decrease in the fuel level in the Range Rover Defender tank. When the sensor shows a decrease in the level to a possible minimum, the heater is blocked. This is done to save fuel. The blocking is indicated by a lighted indicator. It is almost impossible to remove the lock on your own and you should go to the service department.
The design of the heater itself is very reliable, but the nozzle is critical to the quality of the fuel. Therefore, if the tank was refueled from a dubious seller, the burner nozzle will very quickly become clogged with products of combustion of low-quality fuel. The burner cannot be disassembled, therefore, if it is clogged, it must be replaced completely. Regular diagnostics and testing of vehicle components will help avoid serious breakdowns and unnecessary financial costs.
Using the Webasto diagnostics on Freelander 2, you can identify the following defects:
Burner clogged
Mechanical deformation of the nozzle
Fan failure
Temperature control system failure
Open or short circuit in the wiring
Malfunction in the electronics unit
In order to replace the burner, it is necessary to completely remove the heater assembly. This changes all the gaskets. Some difficulties may arise in the process of removing the block. The fact is that the fastening bolts are welded to the holes due to the high temperature. In this case, the bolts are removed with a drill using a drill. After that, the threads should be cleaned.
The unit with the new burner is put in place and secured with new bolts. To remove air locks, antifreeze is poured into the system and the system is pumped. Temperature sensors play an important role in the control system, so when they fail, the system is completely blocked.
All work on the Webasto Friel 2 heater is carried out only by experienced specialists, since the slightest inaccuracies in the work can lead to a fire.
Our service employs high-level specialists. We use the most modern diagnostic and auxiliary equipment and components from trusted suppliers. After completing the work and testing, we issue a one-year warranty.
In order to make it easy to understand how the preheating system works, Webasto has prepared a video that is recommended for everyone to watch:

What happens inside the WEBASTO boiler?
Hello again. Today, as promised, as well as by popular demand, we will talk about a useful, but very capricious device called Vebasto (Webasto))) he is also a liquid autonomous heater, he is a diesel heater, he is a coolant heater, he is pre-heating system ... in general, he's Gosha, he's Goga, he's Georgy Petrovich.)))) ... although NO - Petrovich, it's I.))))
To begin with, briefly about the principles (very principled) of its work and usefulness for the car:
1. The basis of Webasta is a combustion chamber (boiler) made of an aluminum alloy into which the electric fan pumps air (we hear a hum during start-up), the glow plug is pre-heated, and then a special pump pumps fuel from the tank (we hear silks under the bottom of the car near the tank ). A combustion (flame) is formed inside the boiler, which is controlled through the glow plug, based on the indicators of its resistance (changing from heating), when the boiler is hot enough, the glow plug turns off (saves battery energy) and ignition occurs due to the heated walls of the boiler (we hear weak aircraft hum and we can observe the exhaust from under the right front mudguard).
Here she is hiding ...
The fuel mixture ceases to be supplied to the combustion chamber when the coolant temperature approaches 85 degrees and Webasta turns off.
2. At low temperatures, its uninterrupted operation is extremely important for facilitating the start of a diesel internal combustion engine and maintaining its required temperature regime. It should be remembered that 75% of the ICE wear occurs during cold starts, therefore, preheating the diesel ICE cooling system not only makes it easier to start the ICE, but also increases its resource. Those. This Webasta is a very useful piece for internal combustion engines.
Now let's move on to her capricious qualities and the rider of her work.
1. To start the heater, the coolant temperature should not be higher than 40 ° С, and the outside air temperature should not be higher than 4-8 ° С. If it is warmer outside or the car has not yet cooled down, Webasta will not start.
2. The peculiarity of Webasta is that when the level of diesel fuel in the tank is low (less than a quarter), the system blocks the operation of the stove (that's an infection). When filling the tank, the Webasta system is not unlocked! (exactly an infection), in this regard, the connection of diagnostic (dealer or SDD) equipment is required to unlock. Therefore, do not bring the fuel level in the tank before the indicator lights up at low temperatures!
3. Also, Webasta is very sensitive to the level of coolant. As a rule, after trying to start Webasta, the electric pump starts to drive the coolant and the level in the tank drops, Webasta does not start. ... The corresponding inscription lights up, you add coolant, but the re-heater is not reanimated. Most likely, in this case, you need to look at pp. 2. Again this bitch was capricious.
4.Light whims (errors) can be reset by removing the 32nd fuse (20 A) under the hood according to the following scheme: (removed the fuse for 3 seconds, inserted it, pressed the start, started the car, waited 3 seconds (you can press the ON button on the remote control instead of starting), again removed the fuse for 3 seconds, inserted). But to be honest it rarely helps.)))
There are several reasons for Webasta's malfunctions, the main one is software blocking, it can be eliminated, as we said above, through diagnostic equipment without mechanical intervention. In addition, a common cause of Webasta's malfunction is clogging of a candle, clogging of a nozzle, burners in general, everything inside, accompanied by increased smoke (smoke comes from under the wheel as if the car is on fire, it often happens at the first start after a long break. Well, the worst thing is ... destruction of the boiler, only its replacement will help.
Now to the control of Webasta and decryption of blinking on the remote control. If there is no remote control, then Webasta is turned on automatically when the engine is started, according to the ambient conditions and coolant temperature. But in most cars, Webasta is equipped with a remote start. The remote control is of 2 types, the scheme of work is the same for them, the differences are only in size and shape. The operating range with a good battery, according to the manufacturers' assurances, is 100 m, and it is not necessary to point the remote control at the car. In practice, the line of sight of the car is much less and desirable ... How can it be controlled?
1. To turn on the heater - press and hold the ON button on the remote control for about 2 seconds. The green indicator will light up and go out, which means Webasta has turned on and the signal has passed. Warming up will work for 30 minutes or until the coolant temperature reaches 75 C, or if the fuel level falls below the minimum or the battery is discharged.
2. If Webasta failed to start, the indicator will blink 3 times and turn off.
3. To turn off Webasta yourself, press and hold the OFF button for 2 seconds. The red indicator will light up for about 2 seconds, Webasta will turn off. Everything is extremely simple ON (hold) turn on, OFF (hold) turn off ...
BUT there are secrets and decryptions in the blinking LEDs on the remote.
1. Green lights up for about 2 seconds. - the heater has turned on.
2. Red lights up for about 2 seconds, - the heater has turned off.
3. Blinking alternately green and red for 2 seconds - no signal from Webasta.
4. Lights up orange for 2 seconds, then changes to red - low battery charge.
5. Blinking orange for about 5 seconds - weak signal, you need to change the battery in the remote control.
In the next part I will try to tell and describe the procedure for unlocking Webasta on my own using the K-Line adapter, which can now be ordered on Ali for 300-600 rubles. In general, that's all, if you missed something, write. Well, traditionally vidosik.)))

Webasto did not work either from the remote control or with the engine running. We carried out diagnostics. Error codes: B1 D33 “Interruption of ignition during normal operation”. As I understood by the master, it is blocked because the burner, the burner does not ignite. The diagnosis is to change the burner. Is it so?
Diesel Freelander 2 are equipped with a Webasto heater that runs on diesel fuel. Installation on all cars for the Russian Federation is due to the fact that in Russia the winter is quite long and harsh, and the additional unit allows you to warm up the engine faster and get additional comfort when operating the said vehicle. It is thanks to Webasto that the motor functions in the cold season as well as in summer. All motorists know that rubbing elements wear out exactly when it's cold outside. The heating element makes it possible to significantly increase the service life of one of the most important components in the machine - the engine. Also, thanks to Webasto, a comfortable temperature is maintained in the cabin.
If you want to turn off Webasto while the engine is running (not yet warmed up, and the ambient temperature is below five degrees Celsius), you will not be able to do this. The engineering design of the unit does not provide for this. The automatic control maintains the temperature constantly and works reliably.
But even this system is not capable of functioning forever, therefore it periodically requires replacement. In the LR King car service, you can carry out Webasto repairs at a convenient time for a reasonable price. We specialize in just such cars, so we do our job at the highest possible level.
A parking heater usually has two problems. It may not start at all or be blocked. In the first case, the problem is a malfunction of the burner of the unit.
In the second - in the blocking of the system, which occurs due to the low level of fuel in the tank. This approach is necessary to comply with fire safety measures and to save fuel, which is already scarce. Of course, the system can be unlocked, but this will require special dealer equipment required for diagnostics. You can come to us and carry out a check in a short period. After that we will do a test run. If this does not work, we recommend disassembling and dismantling the Webasto on Freelander 2. As a rule, the problem lies in the burner or candle, they are deformed, get too hot and are covered with soot due to the use of a low-grade diesel engine. The burner cannot be repaired; it can only be replaced with a new part.
Under the wheel arch liner, namely in the front wheel well, there is the heater itself. In order to change its burner, you need to remove the unit. In addition, you will need several seals, they are sold as a kit. Very often it is necessary to drill out the fastening bolts, due to the fact that they sour and do not loosen. After replacing the part, the heat exchanger is mounted in its place. Do not forget to add coolant after handling. This is necessary for pumping the system.
We strongly advise against repairing the boiler yourself. Entrust this business to specialists who have approvals, the necessary certificates and experience. Otherwise, you risk starting a fire, damaging your car and getting hurt yourself. It is important that our car service is specialized, we specialize in Land Rovers and provide a guarantee for our work. You don't need to buy anything to complete the renovation. We will do the work on a turnkey basis using original parts. If necessary, we will advise you to install additional elements in order for the stove to function properly.

In this article we will tell you about the additional heater on Webasto fuel on one of the most popular Land Rover car models - Freelander 2. Cars before 2012 and from 2013 have a slight difference in the heater design.
For reference: Webasto is the name of the manufacturer. And the heating device itself is correctly called "additional fuel-fired heater". In the common people it has taken root - Webasto.
There are two modes of operation for the Webasto auxiliary heater on Freelander 2 vehicles.
The first and the main one is in diesel engine re-heater mode... The heater starts to automatically turn on and work when the engine is running and the outside air temperature is below +5 o C.
This mode was invented by engineers in order to warm up a diesel engine, which heats up longer than a gasoline engine. The diesel engine needs reheating because at temperatures below -15 o C the diesel engine may not reach operating temperature. Also, heating in the passenger compartment will be ineffective, it will be cool in the passenger compartment.
To do this, it is necessary that the outside air temperature be below +5 o С, and preferably negative.
Climate control must be on, it doesn't matter in auto or manual mode. The main thing is that it is not turned off with the "OFF" button, and the engine is started.
After starting the engine, the pre-heater enters the heating mode within 1 minute. How can you understand whether he earned it or not? According to the characteristic haze from the heater exhaust pipe, which is located at the front right wheel.
What happens when the Webasto heater is started? The coolant is heated in order to warm up the engine faster and get a more comfortable temperature in the cabin.
The second operating mode of the Webasto heater is prestarting. This means that by pressing the remote control, the boiler can be started without leaving home, that is, start Webasto well in advance of starting the engine.
On Freelander 2 until 2012, Webasto does not heat the interior, only the engine is heated here.
On Freelander 2, since the 2013 model year, the pre-heater operation algorithm has been revised and now the stove fan works here when the boiler is operating - the interior is warming up, the engine is warming up.
In order for the Webasto heater to start in preheating mode, the following conditions must be met:
the outside air temperature must be below +5 o С;
climate control must be on;
the battery must be charged and its voltage must be at least 11.4V;
the doors of the car must be closed and the car must be guarded;
the temperature of the antifreeze must be 15 o C or less;
You need to understand that if the engine is still a little warm, then the heater may not start.
Another important point is the serviceability of the battery, which is especially important on vehicles that are equipped with a battery charge monitoring system (BMC). If the system considers that the battery is undercharged, then the heater may not start.
If the remaining fuel in the tank is less than 8 liters, the system can write a fault code to the auxiliary heater, and the heater will be blocked. To unlock it, you will need to connect to the diagnostic computer and delete the fault codes.
To prevent this from happening, try to keep the fuel level above a quarter of the tank during winter. The fuel level error code blocks the operation of Webasto in all modes. Even after filling the fuel tank, Webasto will not work.
To start the Webasto boiler from the remote control, you need to hold down the "ON" button on the remote control for 1 second. The LED will light up green for 2 seconds and then start blinking green about once every 3 seconds. This means that the boiler should have been started, but this does not mean that it is working.
To turn off the heater, it is enough to disarm the vehicle. The heater will turn off automatically. Or just press the "OFF" button for 2 seconds. The LED will turn red for 2 seconds and turn off.
After starting the engine, Webasto does not obey the control of the remote control. The priority for the Webasto boiler control is transferred to the vehicle systems, the heater will be controlled by the climate control unit.
The manufacturing plant declares the range of the remote control in the line of sight of about 500 meters, if there is no radio interference and other obstacles.
The LED on the keypad has a number of diagnostic functions.
If the LED flashes green, it means that the signal has been transmitted to the car and further this connection is maintained.
If the LED quickly blinks green when the "ON" button is pressed, this means that the signal has not reached the car (to the receiver). There is no connection.
If the LED flashes orange, it means that the battery in the remote control is low and will soon fail. The battery needs to be replaced.
The LED flashes in red only when the "OFF" button is pressed.
If you press the "ON" button and the green LED starts blinking quickly, it means that the signal has not reached the car. In this case, either the distance is too long and the signal simply did not reach, or if you are near the car and see such a thing, most likely the key fob is not registered (“got rid of the car”).
The key fob can be untied when replacing the battery or when removing the terminals. After replacing the battery, it is imperative to check whether the key fob is working, if not, then tie it.
The easiest option is to remove the battery terminal (any "+" or "-") for 5 seconds. Then put it on and press the "OFF" button on the remote control within 5 seconds. The red LED will flash for 2-3 seconds, then turn off. This means that the remote is attached.
If the red LED blinks quickly, it means that the signal has not passed, and there is some problem.
If you are reluctant to remove the terminal, there is another way. You can remove the fuse that powers the receiver. It is located in the luggage compartment fuse box. To be honest, it is not very convenient to get there.
The last option offered by the manufacturer is to remove the connector from the receiver. It is also located in the trunk under the trim on the left side. Getting there is also not very pleasant.
Therefore, the most convenient is the battery terminal.
The Webasto boiler is located behind the front right fender of the vehicle. If you go lower, then in the area of the front right wheel is the exhaust pipe of the Webasto boiler. From there you can observe smoke when starting the boiler.
The Webasto boiler has a muffler, which is designed to reduce the noise during the operation of the boiler. The boiler has an air inlet pipe. Please note that both the air intake pipe and the exhaust pipe must not be clogged with dirt, ice or anything else. These pipes need to be monitored.
A fuel priming pump is located in the area of the fuel tank. It is separate for this system and has nothing to do with the engine power supply system. When the Webasto boiler is operating, you can hear cyclic clicks at the rear right wheel - this means that the pump is working. It is impulsive, so it makes such sounds. This is normal pump operation! Both in the preheating mode and in the auxiliary heater mode.
The most common malfunction of a Webasto boiler is burner destruction. It will burn out over time.
Another common malfunction is a breakdown of the circulation pump, which is located under the panel near the windshield. The fuel pump may also be faulty.
Sometimes there is a malfunction of the control unit of Webasto itself. Then you have to change the block assembly.
In order to understand whether the boiler is working or not, you need to carry out diagnostics and testing yourself. The simplest thing is to go to the car and start the boiler from the remote control. Then go to the right side of the car and listen to whether there are any sounds or not, whether smoke comes from the boiler exhaust pipe or not. You can stick your hand under this pipe to check whether the exhaust is warm or not.
When operating from the remote control, the boiler should work for 20-30 minutes. If the boiler has worked for its time, then it is serviceable, and there are no problems with it. If it was launched incorrectly, then it simply stalls and will not start again.
The 2013 Freelander 2 has interior heating and radio controls. This vehicle can be retrofitted with a GSM module. The advantage of the GSM module is that the boiler can be started by a call from a mobile phone or SMS. It will operate wherever there is cellular coverage. Unlike a keychain, which has a distance limit of 100-200 meters.
On the Freelander 2 until the 2012 model year, only the engine heats up, and on some cars the Telestart was not even installed. Telestart can be installed on these vehicles. It is also possible to warm up the passenger compartment, install a GSM module and a passenger compartment fan control module.
If you have a suspicion that the Webasto boiler does not work correctly, does not work in some separate modes or does not work at all, then come, we will diagnose it for free. Whether you want to renovate, you want not to renovate - that's up to you.
The owner can make preliminary diagnostics of Webasto on his own:
You need to understand in which mode Webasto does not work. In reheating or preheating mode? It often happens that Webasto does not start from the remote control, but works while the engine is running.
Check if the remote control is tied, is the remote control battery defective?
If the remote control is tied, then you need to understand whether Webasto is trying to start when the remote control is pressed or does not react at all (does not make sounds)?
Remember, did you bring the fuel level in the tank before the indicator lights up?
All this information, which the owner can collect himself, saves time to identify the cause in the service.
The most common causes of Webasto malfunction in the LR-WEST service practice are:
Ignition plug defective - burner.
Blocking Webasto on the level of fuel in the tank.
Low battery of the remote control.
The remote control is not registered.
Fuel booster pump.
Additional electric pump of the cooling system
Configuration settings failed
Failure of the software or the wrong software is "flooded".
Malfunction of the "brains" of the Webasto module.

In order to make it easy to understand how the preheating system works, Webasto has prepared a video that is recommended for everyone to watch:
If you liked the video about the design of the Webasto parking heater, installed regularly on Land Rover Freelander 2 cars, watch another video about the harsh field tests.
What happens inside the WEBASTO boiler?
The cost calculator is made for your convenience. He will help you find out the cost of spare parts, the cost of work and the approximate time required to complete the operations you need.
All Land Rover Discovery 3.4 and Freelander 2 diesel cars sold in Russia are equipped with an additional Webasto fuel heater.
This device allows you to warm up your Land Rover engine to the temperature necessary for easy starting even in very severe frost. Also, the absence of "cold" starts of the engine has a very positive effect on its resource.
The second very important function of the Webasto heater is to maintain the operating temperature of the engine to fully heat the interior of your Land Rover. Modern diesel engines are efficient enough and the heat generated into the cooling system during parking or driving in traffic jams is not enough to create a comfortable temperature in the cabin.
On Land Rover cars, the Webasto heater turns on and off when the engine is started. Also, the Webasto heater will turn off when the engine warms up to operating temperature (when the arrow of the temperature gauge is in the middle) and turns on again if the temperature drops again.
Unfortunately, the Webasto heater on Land Rover Freelander 2 and Land Rover Discovery 3 and 4 often fails, which makes the two functions listed above impracticable for the safe and comfortable operation of your car.
The principle of operation of the additional heater Webasto Land Rover.
The principle of operation of the Webasto pre-heater is perfectly shown in a small video clip below. The video is made very cool and understandable, so I recommend that you spend one and a half minutes to watch it.
I will describe in a nutshell how the Webasto Land Rover heater works. A special fuel pump on a separate fuel line picks up fuel from the tank, atomizes and ignites in the combustion chamber. The flame heats up the heat exchanger, through which the engine coolant is driven by a special electric pump. During the passage through the heat exchanger, the liquid heats up. Then the fluid is fed back into the system, thereby heating the engine and the radiator of the interior heater. Combustion products are discharged through a special muffler under the vehicle.
Another very interesting video about what is happening inside the Webasto heater.
Typical malfunctions of the Webasto heater on Land Rover Freelander 2 and Discovery 3 and 4.
As a rule, the additional Webasto heater on Land Rover Discovery 3 and 4 and Freelander 2 stops working for two main reasons.
The first is not a system malfunction. I am talking about the blocking of the Webasto boiler due to a low fuel level in the tank. The purpose of blocking is to conserve fuel as well as the fire safety of your Land Rover. Unfortunately, after you fill the tank, the heater will not work. The lock can only be removed with a special diagnostic tool for Land Rover. This procedure costs 1,080 rubles with us and is performed without queuing.
The second common reason for a non-working heater is the failure of the Webasto Land Rover burner. Goler Webasto Discovery 3 and 4 and Freelander 2 fail due to clogging, overheating and damage to the combustion chamber. Failure is accompanied by a strong increase in heater smoke.
