DIY semitrailer gate repair

In detail: do-it-yourself repair of a semitrailer gate from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.

Serviceable gates on trailers, semi-trailers, vans guarantee the convenience of quick and easy loading, unloading, as well as the safety and quality of goods during transportation. First of all, the gate should provide quick and easy access to the load. The time spent on opening and closing gates that are not suitable for operation threatens to result in the loss of a profitable associated cargo. High-quality locking mechanisms, sealing rubber provide maximum protection for your cargo on the way.

Very often, the cause of malfunction of the doors of vans (hinges, bushings, worn out and torn sealing rubber, delamination of door panels, swelling of mortgages) is a frame (portal) in which corner joints are cracked and geometry is lost. That is, the rigidity and internal reinforcement are lost, the frame begins to "dangle", causing the above-mentioned parts to malfunction. In order not to waste your money on door repairs, we recommend, if necessary, to repair the door frame (reinforcement with dismantling / installation). In some situations, without eliminating both problems at the same time or eliminating only one, you can return to repair in the near future. Therefore, you need to eliminate these problems at the same time.

In the gates of tilt trailers (semi-trailers), there is a design in which internal fittings are used (internal locks inside the gate, tubular hinges). In this design, the hinges are held by rods (round timber) that run inside the goal and inside the goal posts. Over time, due to natural wear and tear in the places of internal constipation and in the hinges, the "undercut" begins when the gate is opened. The gate begins to sit down and the bushings are erased, the sealing gum of the gate fails. In such a situation, we offer three options for troubleshooting:

First, we dismantle and change the rods (gates, hinges), if necessary, we replace the hinges with bushings, leaving your locks and elastic band, i.e. we follow the path of preserving the original gate.

Second, we leave your door panels (in case of excellent technical condition) and install external fittings (external hinges, locks, elastic bands).

Third - in the case when your door panels and fittings are completely in bad condition, we install new doors (new panels made of Finnish plywood, new fittings with a sealing rubber).

For a long time already, the owners of tilt semi-trailers on the rear wall have been changing the valves to the gates. The advantages are obvious: on the one hand, the time for accessing the cargo is reduced, on the other hand, the risk of unauthorized entry inside is much reduced. In addition, this design is more dust and moisture resistant.

The first question that arises if you want to replace the awning with a gate: what material will their doors be made of: aluminum, all-welded galvanized metal or laminated plywood? By and large, all options are acceptable and each of them has justified itself over the years of operation. The nuances are that, say, the metal structure is certainly much stronger, but much heavier.

And the weight of the gate, especially on Russian roads, is of paramount importance: sometimes the hinges do not withstand constant vibration, which quickly loosen and sometimes even fall off literally on the go. Aluminum wickets are much lighter, but lose in price. I mean, very expensive. The golden mean can be considered plywood doors, upholstered on the outside (or better outside and inside) galvanized. They are lightweight and relatively cheap. The issue of strength is rather controversial, because a finished frame made of strong metal profiles is upholstered with plywood.

Installing the gate on a semi-trailer, like their production itself, is usually entrusted to specialized firms offering a wide range of products and services. They go to the site to take the dimensions of the rear wall opening, agree with the customer the material of the wicket and fittings, the color, the terms of the order, after which the price is negotiated, including installation.

Many truck owners are so passionate about their craft, as well as the cost savings, that they prefer to manufacture and install gates on their semi-trailers themselves.

If the structure is frame, then the frame is first welded, which will subsequently be sheathed with either laminated plywood or sheets of galvanized iron. For the frame, as a rule, metal (necessarily closed!) 50x50 made of iron with a thickness of 2.5 mm are used. They are cut into pieces according to the size of the opening, the corners are cut with a grinder strictly at an angle of 45 °. The workpieces are joined on a flat surface. The tape measure checks the parallelism of the side beams, the level - their placement in the plane. The seams of the corners are scalded. If the flaps are long in height, a transverse channel is welded between the two side beams, to which diagonal channels are placed from the corners, so that the gate does not deform and does not sag after some time of operation. The places where it is planned to attach the hinges are reinforced with metal corners. The frame is ready.

Frameless gates are made by gluing several layers of plywood with waterproof glue and upholstering them with a metal sheet. The sheets are attached with self-tapping screws. Holes for locks and hinges are pre-drilled.

Particular attention is paid to the hinges. If earlier they were mostly ordinary, double-hinged, now the so-called free fit is in trend. Such a structure does not break, does not sour over time and therefore can be easily dismantled in case of repair. Preference for locks is given to high-quality Russian and foreign stainless steel products.
