The technology lies in the fact that when the bridge is removed from the donor, the balls remain on the chip. Since stencils are almost unavailable for this aperture, this is almost the only way to replace the chip. Although there are other ways of removing (the method of “splitting” the printed circuit board is very interesting, but in my opinion it is very laborious, although it gives 100% result), this method seems to me the most optimal and fastest. With this method, with a 90% probability, all balls remain on the chip, in the worst case, up to 5 (mostly only 1-3) balls remain on the board, but you can add them without any problems. I will consider the case when one ball remains on the board and show how easy it is to restore it (as well as if there are several of them).

Diagnostics and statistics of malfunction of the south bridges

In the overwhelming majority for motherboards from Gigabyte, when the standby power is applied, the south bridge starts heating up in 5-30 seconds. Although for ASUS motherboards this indicates a malfunction of the bridge feeder (it is treated by the usual replacement of two feeder field workers), and the bridge itself usually remains alive.

In the simplest case, with a faulty south bridge, the POST indicator shows code 25 for Award BIOS and D0-D4 for AMI BIOS.

In 99% of cases, one or more USB Data pins are short to ground, which can be easily checked by ringing them. In the photo, all USB Data pins for the Gigabyte 8IPE1000 rev. 3.1 board, which need to be ringed, are circled in red.

The most difficult-to-diagnose cases are when USB Data does not short to ground, standby voltages are not lost and the bridge does not heat up even when the board starts up. But there were only two such cases in my practice and this is more likely an exception, but we came to the conclusion that the bridge was malfunctioning (the replacement confirmed this) after replacing the cartoon, soldering the socket and flashing the BIOS.

According to our statistics, the Chinese DATA cable for cell phones is to blame in 60% of cases. Another 30% comes from USB Flash Drive and 10% from other USB devices. However, there were cases when USB devices were not used and the bridge burned out by itself! For prophylaxis, with the active use of cellular DATA cables, it is recommended to install an additional PCI-USB controller.

I use a hair dryer, but I think the tiles will work, I have not tried it.BGA flux was taken from cellular repairmen (similar to honey). Let's talk about the puller separately. Earlier, to remove the bridge from the donor, I used radiators from the MCP south bridges from EPoX motherboards, because they had a good adhesive thermal interface. I stuck them to the chip and after heating, with tweezers by the middle rib I lifted it as vertically as possible. But this method gave a lot of marriage. The balls often stick together, because The thermal interface became viscous due to the temperature and the chip, when lifted, partially detached from the radiator. And quite often he completely came off, and after that there was no chance of a successful replacement without a complete reballing with the help of a stencil. Therefore, a puller was invented from scrap materials, namely from a CD-ROM slide from a noname case. In principle, any two elastic plates (or one) bent in this way will do.

A stripper made of four medical needles stuck into a student's eraser at the corners is also quite convenient. After sticking in, the tips are bent, now they ideally fit under the soldered jug. A paper clip hook is stuck in the center of the gum, for which the heated chip is removed.

In the syringe we collect alcohol-rosin solution. One cube is enough, even a little remains. We take the donor board, and hold it at an angle of 25-35 degrees, with one. (it is imperative only on one side to avoid the formation of air jams under the chip and subsequent "carrots" from the "dry" removal of the chip) pour alcohol rosin until it appears at the edges and on the opposite side of the bridge. By the way, if the "carrots" remain, this can be easily corrected by lubricating them with flux and heating the bridge with a hairdryer (or, even better, with a soldering station). We install the puller on the bridge. That's it, the board is ready to remove the chip.

The process of removing the bridge from the donor

We put the board on the table so that its area with the south bridge protrudes beyond the edge for a sufficient distance. Stationary under the board (you have to adjust improvised boxes, CD-ROM drives, power supplies, etc., who has what 🙂 put the hair dryer so that the distance from it to the board is about 2-3 centimeters. for a larger heating area (by the way, it is better to remove the battery from the board, although I forgot to do this several times, and nothing happened to it :). However, this should not be neglected, from heating the battery and electrolytic capacitors have the EXPLODE mode, while all the heated chips and heavy smdelements merrily and quite far fly off the board, so much is added that it is easier to play a funeral.I set the temperature of the hair dryer to 350 degrees, although at 400 the replacement is faster, but the textolite on the back side can change color.

The process of restoring the work of the motherboard is quite complicated, but the demand for it is getting higher and higher every day. Often people face the problem when the south bridge on the motherboard burns out, especially if it runs on the Intel 845-865 chipset. Replacing the transistor

I took 15 motherboards running on 845-865 chipsets. There were several motherboards from Asus and Gigabyte, and thanks to the complete replacement of various elements from the power supply of the microcircuit, it was possible to completely restore about 8 pieces, that is, more than half. Battery Replacement

Motherboard battery problems are also very common, so they should be mentioned. If you start the computer and see the inscription: CMOS Battery Has Failed - the battery of your motherboard is out of order, for example, it is discharged. And the first thing to do is replace the battery.

When you have made the replacement, you need to go to the bios setup and return to normal all the settings that got lost during the procedure. Be careful when replacing the battery, for example, if the fasteners on the sides are plastic, do not press too hard when pulling out the battery, otherwise you will have new problems with the motherboard.

Replacing the cooler

If you encounter problems with the processor cooler, you will have to work hard, because this procedure is quite complicated. It happens that the motherboard manufacturer did not even think about replacing the cooler, and crammed a huge number of capacitors around the processor socket, which make it impossible to replace the cooler. But it’s even worse if your cooler has a very tight and pressed mechanism, which will need to be installed on a not very reliable Athlon with a screwdriver. You will have to try very hard so as not to damage anything.

You can seriously damage the motherboard if you accidentally loosen the mounts, or worse, knock them out completely. If the cooler is not securely attached, it will eventually loosen and fly out, and your processor will end. To replace a connector, you need a faulty motherboard, a screwdriver, and of course patience. Insert a screwdriver between the socket and the motherboard, then gently push down on it. The opening of the connector should occur, and then carry out the same procedure on all sides. But remember that you can accidentally hit something inside or even break an element of the motherboard, which will lead to a complete malfunction in its operation.

Opening the connector reveals a variety of different pin legs holding the connector. Next, put the new connector on your motherboard, put it on from below - from the side in which all the pins are turned. At the end, you need to firmly press the connector so that it does not fly out, this is where the procedure ends, and your motherboard starts working properly again.
