Often it was necessary to see the owners of the VAZ 2109, who, when the ignition lock failed, brought the wires to the button and then used it to constantly start the engine. Of course, this is a way out for a while, but it's not worth driving like that all the time, it's better to replace the lock, since its price is not so high - about 700 rubles.

But before proceeding with this task, you must first remove the steering column shroud. After that, use the head to unscrew the two fastening bolts that tighten the clamp of the ignition lock:

And then disconnect the two parts of the clamp so that they disengage with each other, as can be clearly seen in the photo:

And now you can remove the lock from the steering column by lowering it down:

Then we disconnect the plugs with wires, one of which is shown below - already disconnected:

And it remains to disconnect one more plug, which is with a large connector, and for this you have to stick your hand a little under the panel to get to it:

As a result, we get the following picture:

As you can see, the ignition lock on VAZ 2109-2108 cars is not so difficult to remove, and the installation is not particularly different, only it happens in the reverse order.

The VAZ 2109 ignition lock is a very important and at the same time very capricious mechanism of a car. And in today's article we will try to make out its importance and capriciousness, i.e. its malfunction. The ignition switch is used to supply voltage to the electrical circuits, depending on the location of the key. The castle consists of 2 parts. These are mechanical and electrical parts.

The most common problem of the lock when igniting is its working off and jamming. Another common problem is contact group failure. In this case, several devices fail at once. For example, the dipped headlights, stove, cigarette lighter, rear window heater stopped working right away. Replacing the contact group with a new one, everything worked right away.

Some people still know the answer to this question, and some do not. For unknowing people, we have just prepared this article, which will describe in detail the course of replacing the ignition lock. And at the end of this article you will find a video clip, which will describe in detail the process of replacing this lock.

To replace the ignition switch, you will need the following tools: First, you will need screwdrivers, as well as a drill, a small hammer, pliers, and you will definitely need to stock up on a chisel!

Summary:

When do you need to change the ignition switch and contact group?
It must be replaced when it breaks down, as well as when the key is lost, and even if the larva in the lock stops turning and stalled in one place.
The contact group must be replaced when it is deformed, and even if, after turning the key in the lock, the car's engine stops starting.

Before you immediately say that the contact group of the lock is to blame for everything, first check the contacts of its wire pads for operability. (How to check the contacts of the contact group, see below in the heading: "Checking the contacts of the wire block")

Withdrawal:
1) At the beginning with "Battery is a battery", unscrew the nut that holds the "-" terminal on the battery and then discard the clip. (How to remove the negative terminal from the battery, see the article about "Replacing the battery with a VAZ", in the "first" paragraph)

2) Then remove the steering column cover and both under-steering switches. (How to remove the cover and both switches, see the article: "Replacing the under-steering switches")

  • Further, for clarity, the operation will be shown with the steering wheel removed, but you can still remove the ignition lock without removing the steering wheel.

3) Next, insert if the lock allows, then in this case, insert the ignition key into it and put it in the "0" position.

Note!
The key must be installed in this position only to disable the anti-theft device!

4) Now remove the four bolts that secure the ignition switch. In the event that you have sheared head bolts, then knock them down with a hammer and chisel. (Be sure to read the paragraph "Important!")

If this does not work, then in this case try to drill out all four bolts, but just do it carefully without damaging anything!

5) After the bolts are loosened, remove them with pliers from the hole.

6) Next, remove the bracket from the left side, and the ignition lock from the right.

7) Now disconnect the electrical connector.

8) And finally, crawl under the dashboard, and already there, disconnect the connector coming from the ignition switch to the relay.

Installation:
Installation of a new lock is performed in the reverse order of removal.

1) First, remove the lock from the car using the text above.

2) Next, using the "Ohmmeter" or "Multi-meter" with the "Ohmmeter" function enabled on it, connect its leads to the electrical connector and then look at the readings of the device.

The device should clearly show "0", otherwise replace the contact group!

1) First, on the removed ignition switch, use a screwdriver to unscrew the screw that secures the ignition switch cover.

2) Then use a screwdriver to squeeze out the two plastic latches securing the lock cover.

3) Then remove the cover.

4) And finally, remove the contact group from the ignition switch.

Contact group installation is carried out in reverse order!

Important!
Not all cars of the "Samara" family have the ignition lock attached to the steering column with four bolts, on some cars it is fastened with only two bolts and from above it is fastened with a hook indicated by the red arrow!

The ignition lock VAZ 2108 2109 21099 is of old and new designs:
-The old one has four positions, a relay and a long key,
-New without relay and with a short key for three positions.
The ignition lock has two functions:
-Electric: contact closure depending on the position of the key.
-Mechanical: keyless steering wheel lock.That is, it will not be possible to turn the steering wheel without a key, even if you start the car bypassing the electrical part of the lock. To rotate the steering wheel, you will need to disassemble the lock and remove the mechanical lock.
Malfunctions on the electrical part, the ignition lock VAZ 2108 2109 21099 has only two (as well as for all electricians):
1) Lack of contact in a certain position of the key. In this case, the car may not start, or individual consumers will not work.
2) The presence of contact where not needed. In this case, the castle begins to melt, smoke and emit a characteristic smell.

1) Remove the steering wheel cover. To do this, unscrew the screws securing the upper and lower parts to each other. Removing the protection, we immediately get access to the ignition switch and steering column switches.

2) Unscrew the plastic lining of the ignition lock with a screwdriver. We remove it.

3) Remove the contact group of the ignition switch.

It connects to the rest of the wiring with a plug. If the replacement is made with a new type of ignition lock, then it will be necessary to redo the wiring a little.

It will not work just like that, since they have different connection schemes.
4) Then we unscrew the mechanical part of the lock, which is attached to the steering wheel.

Install the new lock in the reverse order.
The contact group of the ignition lock is sold separately, which can be replaced without touching the entire lock.
Checking the correctness of work ignition lock VAZ 2108 2109 21099:
In order to check whether the lock is working properly in case of suspicion, a diagram is needed indicating which contacts are closed with each other at different positions of the key in the ignition lock.

Red - to the starter,
Pink - + 12V,
Brown - + 12V to turn on the ignition relay,
White - turn on the ignition relay,
Black, blue - other consumers.
Key position "0":
No wire in the contact group should ring with others. All wires are open from each other.
Key position "1":
In this position, the ignition relay turns on and the VAZ 2108 2109 21099 ignition system is powered on the blue and black wire.
White is closed with brown, pink with blue and black.
Key position "2":
In this position, again, the ignition relay remains on, + 12V is supplied to the starter relay.
White is closed with brown, pink with red and black.
Key position "3":
In this position, the circuits are closed, providing the car's illumination, dimensions, and the high-beam headlights signaling.
Brown is closed with black, pink with black.
A typical example of a contact group malfunction: the car will not start. You turn the starter, there is no spark. You start sinning on the switch, the Hall sensor, the coil. But then it turns out that everything is in order, just the ignition system is not powered. That is, from the ignition lock VAZ 2108 2109 21099 power is not supplied to the ignition system.
