Prior hand brake DIY repair

The hand brake device on the Priora is no different from previous VAZ cars with front-wheel drive. That is why the procedure for tensioning the cable will be the same.

If you begin to notice that even with the maximum lever raised, the braking efficiency is low, most likely this indicates that the rear pads do not move to the required limit, thereby not blocking the drums as needed.

It is worth noting that the lever travel is considered normal from 2 to 4 clicks. If in this position the handbrake is not able to hold the car on a slope, then it is necessary to tighten the handbrake cables. Usually, this happens after 20-30 thousand kilometers after purchase.

In order to adjust the tension of the handbrake cables, you will need the following tool:

• 13 mm head, preferably deep
• key for 13
• ratchet handle
• penetrating lubricant

1. First, you need to drive the car into a hole in order to perform this Priora service more conveniently. If this is not possible, then you can raise the rear of the machine with a jack.
2. On Priory, the parking brake cable adjustment mechanism is located under a special metal screen, which must first be unscrewed and removed. To do this, you will additionally need a key for 10.
3. We apply a penetrating lubricant to the lever stem so that there are fewer problems during the loosening or tensioning process.
4. With the help of two keys for 13, and best of all, a deep head, a ratchet and a cardan, we tension the cables as follows. If it is necessary to tighten the handbrake, then turn the stem nut clockwise, if loosened - counterclockwise, respectively.
5. Since there is a lock nut on the stem, it must first be loosened.
6. After making a few turns, you can check what is the working stroke of the lever. If it is from 2 to 4 clicks, and the rear wheels are blocked enough, then the tensioning procedure can be considered complete.
7. We tighten the lock nut and put the protective heat shield in place.

2. Remove the pawl spring. Replace the defective spring.

You will need: two "13" wrenches, a 13 "socket wrench (head), a Phillips screwdriver, pliers.

1. Disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the storage battery.

2. Remove the floor tunnel liner.

3. From the bottom of the car, using a key "13", unscrew the lock nut and the parking brake adjusting nut and remove the equalizer 1 from the rod 2.

4. Remove the protective cover from the hole in the floor and remove it from the tie rod.

5. From inside the passenger compartment, remove the screw for the front fastening of the parking brake lamp switch bracket. Please note that the ground wire of the switch is secured with a screw.

6. Using a “10” wrench, unscrew the four parking brake lever fastening bolts (two front ones also fasten the switch bracket).

7. Set the switch bracket aside.

9. To replace the rod, remove the cotter pin 1 and remove the washer 2.

11. Replace a worn or cracked plastic bushing. Assemble and install the parking brake lever in the reverse order of disassembly. After installing the lever, adjust the parking brake.

The parking brake lever is a brake system and not only the operation of the brake system during parking, but also your safe movement depends on its serviceability. So, in particular, with the help of the hand brake, the rear brake pads are exposed, in the event of a malfunction of the hand brake system, the rear brakes may not be provided with the proper efficiency.

In general, in practice, the handbrake cables on the Priora are rarely changed. And if it is necessary, then in most cases for the following reasons:

1. The cables stretch over time, that is, they become longer. Accordingly, even with the lever fully raised, the effectiveness of the handbrake will be greatly reduced.
2. Failure or complete rupture of the cable, which can occur with sudden braking with the handbrake (there are such amateurs), or if the lever is too tight for a long time.

If, for one of the reasons, you had to face a similar problem, then it must be solved by replacing it. For this we need the following tool:

• Long nose pliers
• Flat screwdriver
• 7, 10 and 13 mm head
• Ratchet or crank
• Extension
• Penetrating grease

All work must be performed with the rear of the car raised, using a jack for this, or they are carried out in the inspection pit. First, unscrew the nuts securing the protective heat shield, and remove it as shown in the photo below:

Now, using a 13 mm head and an extension cord, unscrew the nuts of the parking brake adjustment rod.

Then we remove the cables from the bar:

Next, we proceed to release the cable from the side of the wheel. To do this, it is not necessary to remove the pads, it is enough just to remove the lower spring, and then, using a flat screwdriver, move the cable drive lever to the side and remove the cable itself:

And now we remove the cable from the opening in the casing. If there are difficulties with this, we first apply a penetrating lubricant:

And slightly loosening the cable in its seat, remove it from the hole:

Installation takes place in reverse order. The price of a new cable for the Prioru is from 200 rubles per piece, and you can buy this part in almost any car store or market.

The parking brake cable on the Lada Priora car must be replaced in cases of: difficult movement inside the shell, loosening of steel threads, breakage of the tips. Before replacing, you can try to restore the cable's performance by spilling engine oil into the shell and letting it soak for a few minutes, develop a core. If this step did not help, then we change it to a new one. It is most convenient to carry out repair work on an inspection pit, overpass or driving a car onto lifts. To carry out dismantling work, prepare a standard set of tools and perform the following sequence of actions:

• Lower the handbrake drive lever all the way down to unlock the pads.
• Hang up the rear of the vehicle by loosening the wheel bolts and then removing the wheels themselves.
• Disassemble the brake drums.

• Next, under the car, loosen the lock nut and completely unscrew it and the cable tension adjusting nut, remove the tip from the equalizer.

• Next, we take out the ends of the cable sheath from the brackets on the body on both sides.
• Then we unbend the staples that press the shell to the body side members.

• Now we need to disconnect the cable ends from the drive levers with pads. For the convenience of work, it is recommended to insert a screwdriver between the lever and the body of the brake flap and pulling the lever slightly to the side, remove the tip from it. Do the same on the opposite side.
• There is a holder on the rear axle beam that holds the cable sheath. Loosen its nut.

• Now you can remove the cable sheath from the bracket on the body and rear axle beam.
• Then pull it out of the brake flap.

This completes the repair work on removing the parking brake cable on the Lada Priora. Replace it, then install in reverse order. It is also recommended to pour a little engine oil into the new cable. As a tip: the misleading of drivers is that they do not want to use the handbrake frequently in order to increase its service life, leading to the opposite effect - corrosion of the cable surface, sticking to the shell, etc. The parking brake should be used whenever possible in all appropriate circumstances to ensure it will get the most out of it.
