In detail: Prior hand brake DIY repair from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.
The hand brake device on the Priora is no different from previous VAZ cars with front-wheel drive. That is why the procedure for tensioning the cable will be the same.
If you begin to notice that even with the maximum lever raised, the braking efficiency is low, most likely this indicates that the rear pads do not move to the required limit, thereby not blocking the drums as needed.
It is worth noting that the lever travel is considered normal from 2 to 4 clicks. If in this position the handbrake is not able to hold the car on a slope, then it is necessary to tighten the handbrake cables. Usually, this happens after 20-30 thousand kilometers after purchase.
In order to adjust the tension of the handbrake cables, you will need the following tool:
- 13 mm head, preferably deep
- key for 13
- ratchet handle
- penetrating lubricant
- First, you need to drive the car into a hole in order to perform this Priora service more conveniently. If this is not possible, then you can raise the rear of the machine with a jack.
- On Priory, the parking brake cable adjustment mechanism is located under a special metal screen, which must first be unscrewed and removed. To do this, you will additionally need a key for 10.
- We apply a penetrating lubricant to the lever stem so that there are fewer problems during the loosening or tensioning process.
- With the help of two keys for 13, and best of all, a deep head, a ratchet and a cardan, we tension the cables as follows. If it is necessary to tighten the handbrake, then turn the stem nut clockwise, if loosened - counterclockwise, respectively.
- Since there is a lock nut on the stem, it must first be loosened.
- After making a few turns, you can check what is the working stroke of the lever. If it is from 2 to 4 clicks, and the rear wheels are blocked enough, then the tensioning procedure can be considered complete.
- We tighten the lock nut and put the protective heat shield in place.

Operations performed when repairing the parking brake lever on a VAZ 2170 2171 2172 Lada Priora
The parking brake lever is a brake system and not only the operation of the brake system during parking, but also your safe movement depends on its serviceability. So, in particular, with the help of the hand brake, the rear brake pads are exposed, in the event of a malfunction of the hand brake system, the rear brakes may not be provided with the proper efficiency.
You will need: two "13" wrenches, a 13 "socket wrench (head), a Phillips screwdriver, pliers.

In general, in practice, the handbrake cables on the Priora are rarely changed. And if it is necessary, then in most cases for the following reasons:
- The cables stretch over time, that is, they become longer. Accordingly, even with the lever fully raised, the effectiveness of the handbrake will be greatly reduced.
- Failure or complete rupture of the cable, which can occur with sudden braking with the handbrake (there are such amateurs), or if the lever is too tight for a long time.
If, for one of the reasons, you had to face a similar problem, then it must be solved by replacing it. For this we need the following tool:
- Long nose pliers
- Flat screwdriver
- 7, 10 and 13 mm head
- Ratchet or crank
- Extension
- Penetrating grease
All work must be performed with the rear of the car raised, using a jack for this, or they are carried out in the inspection pit. First, unscrew the nuts securing the protective heat shield, and remove it as shown in the photo below:
Now, using a 13 mm head and an extension cord, unscrew the nuts of the parking brake adjustment rod.
Then we remove the cables from the bar:
Now you need to pull the cable out of its seat, exactly the one that needs to be replaced:
Next, it is necessary to release the cable from the clamps at all points of its attachment to the Priora body.
And in other places that have these staples:
As a result, we should get approximately the following picture:
Next, we proceed to release the cable from the side of the wheel. To do this, it is not necessary to remove the pads, it is enough just to remove the lower spring, and then, using a flat screwdriver, move the cable drive lever to the side and remove the cable itself:
And now we remove the cable from the opening in the casing. If there are difficulties with this, we first apply a penetrating lubricant:
And slightly loosening the cable in its seat, remove it from the hole:
Installation takes place in reverse order. The price of a new cable for the Prioru is from 200 rubles per piece, and you can buy this part in almost any car store or market.
The parking brake cable on the Lada Priora car must be replaced in cases of: difficult movement inside the shell, loosening of steel threads, breakage of the tips. Before replacing, you can try to restore the cable's performance by spilling engine oil into the shell and letting it soak for a few minutes, develop a core. If this step did not help, then we change it to a new one. It is most convenient to carry out repair work on an inspection pit, overpass or driving a car onto lifts. To carry out dismantling work, prepare a standard set of tools and perform the following sequence of actions:
- Lower the handbrake drive lever all the way down to unlock the pads.
- Hang up the rear of the vehicle by loosening the wheel bolts and then removing the wheels themselves.
- Disassemble the brake drums.
- Next, under the car, loosen the lock nut and completely unscrew it and the cable tension adjusting nut, remove the tip from the equalizer.
- Next, we take out the ends of the cable sheath from the brackets on the body on both sides.
- Then we unbend the staples that press the shell to the body side members.
- Now we need to disconnect the cable ends from the drive levers with pads. For the convenience of work, it is recommended to insert a screwdriver between the lever and the body of the brake flap and pulling the lever slightly to the side, remove the tip from it. Do the same on the opposite side.
- There is a holder on the rear axle beam that holds the cable sheath. Loosen its nut.
- Now you can remove the cable sheath from the bracket on the body and rear axle beam.
- Then pull it out of the brake flap.
This completes the repair work on removing the parking brake cable on the Lada Priora. Replace it, then install in reverse order. It is also recommended to pour a little engine oil into the new cable. As a tip: the misleading of drivers is that they do not want to use the handbrake frequently in order to increase its service life, leading to the opposite effect - corrosion of the cable surface, sticking to the shell, etc. The parking brake should be used whenever possible in all appropriate circumstances to ensure it will get the most out of it.
The parking brake must always be in working order, if you begin to notice any malfunctions, you should immediately start repairing. Today we will publish a guide that describes in detail the repair of the hand brake on the Lada Priora with our own hands.
You will need:
- two keys "for 13";
- socket wrench (head) "13";
- a screwdriver with a Phillips blade;
- pliers.

The parking brake is one of the key elements of the entire braking system. Any motorist realizes the exceptional importance of this device. When the unit fails, it is not worth delaying the repair. The serviceability of the system is an important condition for the safe operation of the car. We will tell you how to tighten the handbrake on the Priora or replace the parking brake.
Wear of brake pads, like other elements of a car, is inevitable. For this reason, the cable must also be tightened regularly. During normal vehicle operation, the frequency of adjusting the brake system is every 20-30 km. mileage. To set up, you need two open-end screwdrivers. Work is best done in a garage pit or on an overpass. Before starting the operation, we clean the bottom of the car from dirt.
- Remove the heat sink (mounted on 4 bolts).
- We loosen the lock nut and adjust the cable until its tension ensures the effective operation of the handbrake (reliable blocking of the wheels).
- Do not over-stretch the cable (it leads to overheating of the drums and premature wear of all structural elements).
- We tighten the lock nut, install the screen.
- tips are too loose;
- the threads are badly worn out;
- the cable moves with effort in the sheath (even after lubrication).
If the adjustment of the cables did not give the desired result, change the parking brake.
- Disconnect the wires from the battery terminals.
- We dismantle the equalizer.
- We unscrew the mounting bolts.
- We take the bracket to the side.
- We remove the traction from the hole in the floor, dismantle the parking brake lever.
- We take out the cotter pin, washer and remove the thrust from the axle.
- We mount the new lever and related elements in reverse order.
- We carry out the adjustment in the above sequence.
After work, all elements must be well lubricated. This measure will protect components and assemblies from corrosion and extend their service life.
Rear brake pad wear is inevitable, which is why over time you have to tighten the parking brake cable for the parking brake to work effectively. On the Priora, as well as on other front-wheel drive cars of domestic production, the adjustment is carried out in the same way, and to complete it you will need only two keys for 13, preferably open-end.
To look at all this work visually, I recorded a video lesson that will show this process in as much detail as possible.
This work was done on the example of a dozen, but the only difference that can be is the installation of a protective metal screen on the Prior, which must first be removed.
Below there will be a photo report in case of unavailability of viewing a video clip.
This procedure is most conveniently carried out on a pit or hoist to get to the adjustment mechanism without too many problems. In the back of the car, under its bottom, you need to find such a mechanism, which is shown below in the photo:
So, the first step is to remove the heatsink, if any. It usually rests on 4 nuts. Then we loosen the lock nut and tighten the first one until the handbrake works effectively. Usually it should block the wheels of the car well with 2-4 clicks of the lever.
When the cable is properly tensioned, the lock nut can be tightened and the protective shield replaced. It should be borne in mind that you should not overtighten the cable, as this can lead to rapid wear of the rear pads and excessive heating of the drums.
If, even with a sufficiently strong tension on the parking brake cable on the Priora, no improvement occurs, then it is necessary to replace the pads.

Parking brake lever travel should be 2-4 clicks. During the operation of the car, it is allowed to increase the lever travel up to eight clicks.
If the lever travel is six or more clicks, adjust the parking brake actuator.
To complete the work, you will need a viewing ditch or overpass.
1. Preparing the car for the job.
2. Raise the parking brake lever up to the stop, determining the amount of its travel. If it is less than two clicks, lengthen the drive, and if more than six, shorten it.
3. Fully lower the parking brake lever.
4. Remove the pillows from the brackets of the additional muffler.
5. Pulling the additional muffler away from the bottom of the car, place a wooden block under the muffler pipe. We remove the protective screen.
7.Loosening the adjusting nut lengthens the drive, tightening it shortens it.
8. Periodically, during the adjustment process, we check the lever stroke.
If the length of the threaded part of the rod is not enough to adjust the lever stroke, it is necessary to replace the drive cables, and in case of severe wear of the linings and brake pads.
9. After adjusting the parking brake lever, we hang the rear of the car. We check the ease of rotation of the rear wheels and the reliability of their fixation with the parking brake.
10. If the brake pads do not interfere with the rotation of the wheels, fix the adjusting nut with a locknut. Install the protective screen in place.
11. We check the performance of the parking brake system: on an incline with a slope of 23%, it must reliably hold the car at a standstill. If necessary, we check the condition of the parking brake drive parts, the condition of the rear brake pads and brake drums. We replace defective and worn parts. Then we repeat the adjustment.
I somehow tightened the cable so that the car could not move :)

We replace the parking brake cables when they break, pull or jam inside the shells, when adjusting the parking brake fails to keep the car stationary on a slope - up to 25% inclusive. We remove the parking brake lever to replace it or to replace the lever arm.
Replacing the cables should be done simultaneously - left and right.
We show the replacement of the left cable.
We move the parking brake lever to the lowest position.
We unscrew the locknut and the adjusting nut from the parking brake lever pull rod (see "Adjusting the parking brake").
Remove the cable equalizer from the parking brake lever pull.
We take out the front ends of the cables from the equalizer and remove the equalizer.
We take out the end of the shell of the left cable from the bracket.
The cables cross in front of the bracket.
With a head or a key "for 10" we unscrew, not completely, the nut that secures the bracket to the rear suspension beam ...
... and remove the cable sheath from it.
We remove the sheath of the cable from the holder on the bracket for attaching the rear suspension beam.
Bend the bracket with a screwdriver ...
… And remove the cable from the holder on the body.
We take out the cable from the second holder located on the body in front of the fuel tank.
Disconnect the rear tip of the left cable from the parking brake drive lever (see "Replacing the brake pads of the rear wheels").
We remove the tip of the cable from the hole in the brake shield ...
... and remove the left cable.
Remove the right parking cable in the same way.
We install the cables in the reverse order.
After replacing the cables, adjust the parking brake (see "Adjusting the parking brake").
To remove the parking brake lever, unscrew the locknut and the adjusting nut from the parking brake lever rod (see "Adjusting the parking brake").
Remove the cable equalizer from the parking brake lever pull (see above).
Remove the tunnel floor lining (see "Removing the tunnel floor lining").
Using the "10" head, unscrew the four bolts securing the parking brake lever bracket to the floor tunnel.
Remove the parking brake lever with bracket and rod assembly by pulling the rod through a rubber sealing cover in the bottom of the body.
We straighten the cotter pin with pliers ...
... and take it out of the finger.
Remove the washer, axle and tie rod from the parking brake lever.
Install the parking brake lever in reverse order.
Adjust the parking brake (see "Adjusting the parking brake").
If on the VAZ-2112 it has become bad to hold the handbrake, then you should not immediately change it, since the cable can be adjusted. In the event that the mileage on the car is large, the rear pads on the car may wear out. This can lead to a decrease in the effectiveness of the handbrake and the entire braking system. In this case, the handbrake cable will need to be tightened.
For clarity, we give a diagram of the hand brake
1 - a button that fixes the parking brake lever; 2 - hand brake lever; 3 - protective pad; 4 - handbrake traction; 5 - cable equalizer; 6 - adjusting nut; 7 - lock nut; 8 - cable; 9 - protective sheathing of the cable.
In this scheme, we need item number 6... It is he, and only he!
In order to adjust the handbrake, you need an overpass or a lift. If there are no such devices, then you can simply hang the rear wheels on the "trestle". They can be installed under the car using a jack. It is also worth taking two keys for "13" and pliers.
-
The car is installed on a flyover or "goats".
We put the handbrake at the very bottom. Do not pay attention to the scuffs of the console, we conducted an experiment with non-standard armrests. The iron mounts of the armrest are visible. On the photo is the editorial car
We tighten the adjusting nut
Everything is rusted with us, we have changed the adjustment mechanism
If it does not come out to pull the cable, then it should be replaced with a new one.
After adjusting the brakes, check them again. To do this, the car should be placed on a road with a slope. not less than 23% ... The car should be in neutral in this area and with the handbrake tightened. If the handbrake brakes hold the car in this area, then the handbrake is adjusted correctly.
There are also cases when the above actions are not enough to adjust the handbrake. This can happen, for example, when the handbrake cable is cut off. This happens on the VAZ-2112, although rarely. In such situations, the cable must be replaced. Also, the cable must be replaced when:
- Tips are loose.
- The cable itself begins to stretch, which will lead to its breakage during operation.
HAIKU! The old cable is very worn out! For comparison, the old and new parking brake cables
Strong wear of the parking brake cable
Such a replacement procedure does not require contacting a service station. Although it will take some time and skills from the driver, you can do this work yourself.
It should also be remembered that certain conditions must be observed when replacing the cable. To do this, the driver will need an assistant who will pull the cable.
The cable acts as a drive here. If the driver pulls the handbrake lever, then at the same time he uses the cable, which spreads the pads in the rear wheel.
If the handbrake is faulty, then you just need to tighten the cable or replace it with a new one. On the VAZ-2112, it is quite simple to do it with your own hands.
You can determine if the parking brake needs adjustment by checking. It is recommended to do it every 30,000 kilometers. This procedure should be done even when it seems that the handbrake is working well.
Also, the device must be checked in cases where it does not work. For example, a car is moving when the brake lever is applied.
Car brake pads are susceptible to gradual wear, in connection with which it is necessary to periodically check the operation of the parking brake, and, if necessary, tighten its cable. On Priora, the parking brake cable is tightened in the same way as on other front-wheel drive cars of domestic production.
And in order to do this work, you just need two keys for 13, preferably open-end.
In order to more clearly see how the whole process should go, you can watch the video review
In case you still have any questions after that, you can see the photo countdown for the video.
It is advisable to do all the work on a pit or on a lift, since in this case it will be much easier for you to get to the adjustment mechanism. In the back of the car we find the mechanism shown in the photo below.
So, first of all, you will need to remove the heat sink, unless of course it is on your car. As a rule, it is kept on 4 nuts. Next, you need to loosen the lock nut, after which we tighten the first one until the parking brake cable is pulled up to the desired level. Usually, the wheels of the car lock occurs with 2-4 clicks of the lever.
After that, we tighten the lock nut back and install the protective screen in place. With all this, it is also worth noting the fact that it is also not recommended to overtighten the cable, since the consequences of this can be rapid wear of the rear pads and excessive heating of the drums.
After completing the operation, check in action whether the adjustment was performed correctly.
In cases where, even after a strong tension on the cable, nothing has changed, then it is necessary to replace the brake pads.
To check the condition, or rather the robotic ability of the handbrake, we set the car on a slight slope. If by 3-4 clicks the tightened hand brake lever keeps the car on a slope, then you did everything right.
Repair of the hand brake lever on the Lada Priora car is performed in the case when it has ceased to perform the functions assigned to it. Depending on the severity of the damage, the lever is either changed or restored. The car must be driven onto an inspection pit, overpass or lifts. To carry out repair work, prepare a standard set of tools, then do the following sequence of actions:
- First of all, it is necessary to de-energize the car; for this, disconnect the minus terminal from the battery. To prevent a short circuit and damage to the fuses when disconnecting the power wires from the parking brake sensor.
- In the passenger compartment, dismantle the decorative tunnel located directly between the front seats.
- Next, we move under the bottom and with two wrenches, one of which we keep from turning the adjusting nut of the drive cable, and the second we unscrew the counter nut, after which we completely unscrew the adjusting nut and disconnect the cable from the equalizer.
- Remove the protective rubber boot from the rod. Subsequently, during assembly, if it is damaged, replace it with a new one.
- Inside the car, near the handbrake lever, unscrew the screw for the front fastening of the bracket for the parking brake indicator switch button, also under this screw there is a ground wire.
- Now you can remove the lever mechanism itself. To do this, with a socket head for ten, unscrew the four bolts of its fastening to the body. The two bolts are also used to secure the switch bracket.
- Set the bracket with the switch aside so that it does not interfere.
- The mechanism itself with the lever can now be removed.
- To replace the drive rod, release the tabs on the locking cotter pin.
- Now you can remove the rod from the axle and the plastic washer located under it. If the washer is damaged, replace it.
