In particular, particular attention should be paid to such elements as the steering and suspension of the vehicle. Failure or wear of any of the components of these systems can cause tire wear, reduced road stability, loss of controllability, increased fuel consumption, and so on. Timely check of the steering and suspension of the Ford Galaxy is an opportunity to find the problem in time and fix it.
Checking the shock absorber (strut)
To perform a Ford Galaxy strut / shock check, follow these steps:
- Stop the car on a flat surface, turn off the engine and raise the handbrake. Make sure the tire pressure is normal;
- Approach one of the corners of the car and press hard on it. Then let go of the body and watch the movements (the car should stop swinging and take its original position after 1-2 rolls);
- If the machine sways further or remains in a lowered position, then the reason may be a loosening of the suspension strut (shock absorber) or wear of the unit;
- Do the same on all sides of the car;
- Raise the vehicle with a jack and fix the machine on the supports;
- Inspect components (struts, shock absorbers) for fluid leaks. If a small film appears on the nodes, this is not a problem. But if there is a leak, change the strut or shock. Please note that the replacement must be carried out in pairs (on the same bridge);
- Make sure the shock absorbers (struts) are securely installed and intact. Inspect the top supports for wear or obvious damage. If there are any, then make a replacement.
Please note that if you change the shock absorbers (struts) one at a time, then there is a high risk of reduced controllability and, as a result, danger of movement. If this is real, then change four components at once.
Steering and suspension
To work on these Ford Galaxy systems, proceed as follows:
- Examine system elements for distortions and defects. Pay particular attention to the presence of leaks, the integrity of the gaskets, fittings and rubber boots;
- Clean out the steering knuckle. Give the command to your partner to grab the wheel and try to swing it, while you yourself watch the ball joints that combine the lever element and the steering knuckle. Examine the protection for breaks. If there are any, there is a backlash or a leak, then the ball joint must be changed;
- Grab the wheels from the front (one at a time) by holding the edges. Now try to turn the wheel with the back out. This allows you to check for play in the steering drive. If so, make sure that the steering joints and the various fasteners on the mechanism are firmly in place and well stretched. If you find any looseness, broach the main units. Please note that loosening of the steering rods may indicate wear on the joints.
Check for backlash
To diagnose the steering system of a Ford Galaxy for backlash, do the following:
- Place the steering wheel in the middle position;
- Rotate the steering wheel from one side to the other while looking at the front wheels. The allowable backlash is about 25 mm. If this parameter is greater, then it is worth checking the quality of the steering rods and bearings (for the fact of backlash);
- Try to move the steering rods with your hand. The absence of backlash at the hinges is the norm. If this is not the case, then the tie rods or the joints themselves will need to be changed.
Ball, tips, steering unit covers
To check the integrity (operability) of the tips, covers and supports of the Ford Galaxy, follow the diagram below:
- Using a lamp, illuminate the anthers of the lower ball joint on the right and left sides for the fact of deformations and leaks;
- Illuminate the boot of the rod end (using a lamp) and make sure that there is no (presence) damage;
- If there are traces of breakage, then it is better to change the anthers together with the hinge. If this is not done, then dust and dirt that gets to the hinge will simply destroy the mechanism;
- Move the steering rods of the Ford Galaxy in different directions and make sure there is no play. If there are any, then it is worth changing the faulty tip;
- Check the tightness of the locking nuts of the tip and fastening of the hinge pin (without rotation);
- Inspect the protective covers for integrity. Replace if damaged.
Drive shaft covers
The task of the Ford Galaxy drive shaft covers is to protect the CV joint from penetration of water, dirt and other destructive elements (objects) to the main mechanism. Please note that external contamination can lead to early system failure. Therefore, it is advisable to wash the covers with a soapy solution.

Examine the covers for cracks and jerks. If there are cracks or grease leaks, it is better to change the cover. At the same time, make sure the CV joints are in good condition. To do this, you need to hold the shaft and try to spin the wheel. Repeat the same action while holding the inner CV joint and turning the shaft. The presence of backlash indicates wear in the grooves of the shaft, the hinge itself, or the unscrewing of the nut locking the shaft.
