For the rational use of space, communications and devices for the garage are used with their own hands from scrap materials. It is necessary to use walls, an underground level in the process, place machines inside the room, organize normal lighting.

DIY garage accessories

For the comfortable operation of a room intended for storing a car, you should adhere to certain recommendations:

Video (click to play).
  • the tool must be as accessible as possible;
  • storage areas equipped with shelves / racks are much more convenient;
  • do-it-yourself workbenches, a viewing hole, home-made machines and garage accessories expand the capabilities of the car owner;
  • the cellar allows you to save space on the site;
  • the quality of lighting depends on the productivity of work, minor repairs.

Organization of the working space inside the garage

Depending on the size of the building, the area occupied by equipment, fixtures, and communications should not be more than 10 - 20% of the size of the garage floor.

In 80% of cases, do-it-yourself garage fixtures are constructed to store accessories, tools, and vehicle equipment. It should be borne in mind that the most bulky parts of the car are sets of winter / summer tires, depending on the season.

It is more convenient to store wheels on brackets of the following design:

  • two triangular frames from the corner, connected by jumpers from any rolled metal;
  • the triangles are attached to the wall, the wheels are installed perpendicular to the supporting structure, falling slightly between the lintels.

Wheel storage brackets

This is the most economical option for storing rubber during the off-season. Straight and corner workbenches are most in demand by car enthusiasts. The lower space is usually filled with shelves or drawers; sharpeners and vices are located on the table top.

Homemade garage workbench

An example of organizing a corner workplace

A folding workbench can be very convenient.

Wood is a versatile material for both workbenches and shelving

A wooden workbench is easier to build on your own, but it has a lower resource than an analogue from rolled metal, which needs to be welded.If no corners for shelves are laid in the load-bearing walls during construction, it is easier to make racks from rolled metal or sawn timber.

Homemade garage racks

Use for glass bottle racks

Built-in wardrobes are very compact

Original hanging shelves are suitable for storing long items

The design and arrangement of shelving within each garage is too individual to follow general guidelines.

An inspection hole becomes a necessary device for a garage with your own hands. Moreover, the owner does not have to make all the repairs on his own. Underground communication can be used in the following cases:

  • inspection of the chassis, steering, brake system before a long trip;
  • oil change, which allows you to save, does not take much time;
  • minor repairs that allow for the qualifications of the owner.

It is more convenient to enter the cellar from the pit, as this will allow several steps to be concreted instead of using a ladder.

The main nuances of these designs are:

  • swelling of clayey soils is harmful to underground structures;
  • therefore, all elements of the pit and cellar are insulated with expanded polystyrene outside;
  • in the underlying layer before concreting, backfilling the sinuses of the pits, sand or crushed stone is used;
  • along the perimeter of underground structures at the level of the sole, drains are laid to collect and drain water.

The width of the pit should allow the driver to enter it without lighting.

In garages, parallel lighting circuits are more often used. One lamp allows you to use a specific area, several devices are turned on during major repairs, visiting the cellar. The minimum power consumption is ensured by LED lamps. Daylighting devices have a great resource.

In cars, poisonous, harmful fuels and lubricants are used, therefore, do-it-yourself devices for ventilation of the garage, allowing you to create air exchange, become relevant. The inflow is organized from below:

Ventilation of the garage and cellar under it

The hood is mounted under the ceiling of the cellar, the roof of the garage, or has the form of vents in the main walls at the highest points.

Useful accessories for a garage with your own hands can be made from used utensils, inventory, materials left over from construction. For example, by gluing the lids of plastic cans horizontally / vertically, the owner gets a convenient transparent utensil for tooling or hardware, which is always at hand.

From a power tool, you can assemble homemade machines and accessories for the garage:

Drill boring machine

The advantage of the machines is a more accurate positioning of the tooling relative to the workpiece. The equipment turns out to be collapsible, the drill and angle grinder can be removed and used as intended.

The simplest design of a hydraulic press is derived from an automobile hydraulic jack. To press out / press in bearings, press / compress parts, you will need to build a frame and a removable movable stop. The frame consists of 4 channels welded to each other. At the top, the structure is reinforced with stiffeners (kerchiefs), at the bottom, transverse corners are added, giving the frame stability.

DIY hydraulic press from a jack

The stop is pulled in a normal position to the upper crossbar of the frame by powerful springs. A hydraulic jack is installed between them, if necessary, pressing the stop to the lower crossbar of the frame.The force of the press is regulated by a jack, the dimensions of the working area are selected depending on the size of the workpieces.

And finally, a few more examples of useful things for the garage.

Factory tools, undoubtedly, are necessary things, but sometimes tools for repairing cars with your own hands and caring for it are in no way inferior to factory ones.

The car needs two types of repairs: quick and long-term. The first type involves a certain replacement of spare parts - most often, only one needs to be replaced. The second, however, type assumes partial or complete work on the repair of the machine.

There are the following subspecies of car repair:

  1. Actual. It involves the replacement of individual parts only in case of its complete failure, for example, repair of the brake system.
  2. Repairs according to plan. It is produced according to the schedule. Most often, it is used in the repair of public or special vehicles.
  3. Complete renovation. It is necessary in case of failure of several departments of the car at once, which requires its complete disassembly and bulkhead of all spare parts.

Thus, based on the types of repair, the following methods can be distinguished:

  1. Individually to every detail. It involves the removal of individual parts, repair and re-installation. This is the longest type of repair - complete. With this type, you have to wait a long time for it to end.
  2. Fast way. In this case, the defective parts are first removed, and then the workers are immediately inserted. This type of repair is called actual repair. It takes about an hour, during which there is a complete replacement of failed spare parts.
  3. Self-repair. It involves the implementation of independent repair actions in relation to your car. It can combine all types of repairs at once - depending on the severity of the repair.

With this type of repair, the main rule is to prepare in a timely manner and constantly carry with you tools and devices for car repairs.

They can be located in one of two options: in a special box or in a special cassette. It is a piece of styrofoam with a hole cut into it.

All other parts are attached to the bottom of the vehicle.

These containers will include the following types of instruments:

As for the devices made with one's own hand, the following points can be noted here:

  • Rags. They should be wide and dense. The best choice would be rags or canvas fabrics. They are least of all prone to chafing and last longer without forming holes. They can be used to wipe off excess oil, hands or glass. An important rule should be remembered: if oil appears on the rag, you should get rid of it, because this can lead to ignition.
  • Spare parts. In the case of replacing contacts or other parts of the car, parts that are least worn out can be reused for preliminary repairs with the possibility of arriving at the repair site.
  • Additional details. These include the radiator cap, petrol pump, fuses and extra belts. All of them tend to fail at the wrong time. With their presence, this situation can be easily corrected.
  • Additional wheel. If you are in a deserted area, only it will help in the case of a punctured old wheel.
  • Cigarette lighter. It is required to charge the battery from another car.
  • First aid kit. It should contain all the necessary medicines and first aid equipment.
  • Gloves.They should be woolen with the ability to perform such dirty and difficult work in them, as pulling the car out of the swamp or replacing a dirty wheel.

These homemade car repair tools can help you cope with repairing your car in tough conditions.

More and more cars are produced every year. Today, you can meet a person behind the wheel of almost any profession - an engineer and a doctor, an architect and a worker, a collective farmer and a teacher. You can learn how to properly operate a car, that is, when to change the oil, how to select candles, what to do in case of certain problems, you can learn from the corresponding manuals and instructions.Unfortunately, little is written about the little things that facilitate the daily worries of the motorist. The purpose of today's publication is to fill this gap to some extent.

At first, a novice motorist gets a lot of trouble by entering a semi-dark garage. Careless movement with the steering wheel or the gas pedal - and dents and scratches appear on the body of a brand new car.

Attach the simplest rails to the garage floor (fig. 1), -and the car itself, if you drive up to them with the front wheels, will keep the "course". The guides can be two sections of a suitable channel or rails. At worst, a couple of wooden blocks will do.

So, the direction of entry is secured. The next task is to stop in front of the back wall of the garage. Some people prefer to mount two car tires on it. (fig. 2) and move until the bumper rests against them. There are a few more ways you can suggest to help you slow down in time. Here is one of them (fig. 3)... A small ball (like a tennis ball) is suspended from the ceiling of the garage on a thin cord. The point of its suspension is chosen in such a way that the ball touches the windshield in the parking place. The moment of touching will be the signal to stop.

But in a dark room sometimes it is difficult to see the ball. In such cases, it is better to use an electromechanical beacon. (fig. 4) - an electric lamp fixed on the rear wall of the garage, which lights up when the limit switch is triggered. The rod of the "limit switch" is connected with a telescopic spring-loaded probe, when it touches the bumper of the car, an electrical circuit is closed, which turns on the signal lamp. The variant shown on Figure 5.

Well, if you are used to putting the car in the garage in reverse, then an ordinary mirror will help (fig. 6)... Finding the correct position is easy. Drive the car to its normal place and turn on the taillights. Adjust the tilt of the mirror so that the light can be seen through the rearview mirror. The next time you drive into the garage, you will only press the brake pedal when the red or orange light of the taillights "splashes" into your eyes.

All these devices concerned a garage with a gate located in a narrow part of it. And if, on the contrary, the entrance is in a wide wall (fig. 7)?

Very simple. It is only necessary to lay four guide rails on the floor and weld a movable overpass - a kind of trolley on four rollers. The car enters the overpass extended from the garage, and then rolls sideways into the garage.

Almost every motorist has to crawl under the car. Still, the entire chassis, engine, clutch and gearbox assemblies are located below. Some garages are equipped with overpasses or observation pits, which greatly facilitate this work. But what if they are not around?

Other car owners get out of the situation using a pair of wooden beams, laid on two tragus. However, we do not recommend you use this method: a machine located on an inclined plane can slide off it, and suddenly the tragus will let you down.

We advise you to make a portable observation deck (fig. 8), a place for which there is almost any, even the most cramped garage. The material for it will be trimmed channels. The overpass device, as well as the assembly diagram, are shown in the figure.

In conclusion, here are a few little tricks.

Even the most "stubborn" nuts will not resist the combination of a conventional socket wrench with a steel angle and a shovel handle. How to arrange them relative to each other is shown in Figure 9.

If you have a station wagon, we advise you to fix a shelf in the rear of the body (fig. 10) from a steel bar braided with a nylon cord. On the “second” floor, it is advisable to place things that are not always possible to place together with luggage.

On the road, in a difficult traffic situation, a lot depends on the driver, on his mood. And it directly depends on the degree of correctness of others, on what their behavior is in critical situations.

Surely, the inscription flashing for a moment will cause you a warm feeling (fig. 11) on the light board of the car that has overtaken you (of course, if you met this overtaking with understanding and contributed to it!). If you would like to thank fellow motorists in this way, we advise you to put the same scoreboard on your car.

Less and less free space remains under the hood of a modern car. The manufacturer strives to utilize every square centimeter of space around the engine. For a car mechanic, these are additional problems, since it becomes more and more difficult to get to dismantle a part, more and more hard-to-reach places become.

Here, I have compiled a very interesting list of 19 special professional tools and devices that can help solve this problem.
Of course, some tool may seem very exotic, and little used in work, but every auto repairman who is more or less involved in professional car repair would want to have some positions in his garage.

LED lamp made in the format of a "police baton" with magnetic mounts.
It is very convenient to use when working under the bottom of a car or under the hood. Strong magnets will hold the flashlight in place without any problems, and the tube, which rotates along its axis by 200 degrees, can be turned exactly where you need bright light. It can work both from the on-board network and from its own battery.

The ability to switch brightness more / less and its own rechargeable battery allow the lamp to work autonomously for up to 8 hours. And as a bonus, it's a great option for lighting up your garage when the power goes out.

Working under the hood in the engine compartment, sometimes you have to face a problem, unscrew and tighten the bolt, especially if it is in a hard-to-reach place and tightens with a decent torque.
And here such a special wrench working in ratchet mode can come in handy.

A very interesting hand-held pneumatic tool, one might say percussion. Something reminded me of sandblasting, only everything is much simpler.
By connecting it to the compressor, you can effortlessly fight off rust, welding scale or old paint.

The principle of operation is simple - steel needles (options from 12 to 19 needles are possible) at a speed of 4000-4600 beats per minute (depending on the model) will knock out corrosive places to pure iron. It is especially convenient when used in hard-to-reach places, where it is impossible to reach with a corset.

Personal protective equipment should be used when working with this tool: heavy gloves, goggles and earmuffs.

With this special tool (I call it a nut), you can break any nut if it is impossible to unscrew it.
Surely any of you came across rusted nuts, especially when the chassis bulkhead, tearing off the splines and swearing.
Now everything is simple: I put on the ring, brought the hardened "tooth" to the nut and twist it until it just breaks the nut. A big plus of such a tool is that the thread on the bolt or hairpin is not damaged, all that remains is to throw off the broken nut and drive a new one along the thread with oil.

There are probably a lot of pliers in your arsenal of tools, but there are definitely no such pliers!
Have you noticed that when you try to grab a small part in an uncomfortable place with ordinary pliers, your hand interferes with seeing the process, blocking it?
The Kiwi pliers, so named for their resemblance to this New Zealand bird, will solve this problem - it will be more convenient to work.

Having such a set, where each head has its own cord, you get additional opportunities when working in hard-to-reach places of the car.These heads have a much shorter body than conventional heads when used with the kit's standard gimbal.
Minus one, this set is not cheap.

When disassembling a car for repair, it is often necessary to disconnect various electrical connectors.
In the latest car models, they are often combined with plastic fasteners and, when detached, without a special tool, they can be easily damaged.
With this set of hooks, almost any connector can be conveniently disconnected without breaking it.

If you try to pull out the plug with ordinary pliers, you can easily damage the rubber cap or the wire itself. So they came up with such an interesting gadget - special pliers for removing high-voltage wires from the plug terminal.

There are times when, when performing repair work, you need to jack up two places at once.
This problem can be solved by using a jack attachment with two independent (adjustable) seats. This device is installed instead of the standard saddle. You can lengthen the arm to the desired size, and also rotate the cross members around the center axis of the jack.

Tightening the bolts without a special torque wrench, without taking into account the recommended tightening torques, can cause serious damage to the vehicle.
As a rule, a professional auto repairman who respects his client in the workshop has several different torque wrenches for different tasks. Now, this amount can be replaced by purchasing one electronic digital adapter and using it with a ratchet wrench or other wrench with a half-inch adapter. The digital display will show the tightening torque at the moment and will inform you with a sound signal when the desired torque has been reached.

How much time can be spent looking for a newly unscrewed part: "I just put it somewhere here ..." a bolt, a nut and similar eternally lost little things.
A very interesting solution is a magnetic badge on a belt. Just stick the unscrewed screw (nut) to it and you don't have to search when the part is needed again.

Here are six more interesting mini sets of special tools for working in hard-to-reach places during disassembly and assembly. Here, in principle, everything is clear where and how they can be used.

  1. A set of four short screwdrivers.
  2. A set of ratchets and bits with various curly tips: sprockets, hexagons, squares.
  3. Flexible extension bar with magnetic tip, into which you can insert a variety of bits or heads.
  4. Miniature rotating universal joint with ¼ ”adapter.
  5. A set of three special ratchets.
  6. A set of ratchet screwdrivers capable of working at 90 degrees and attachments for it.

Interesting adaptation, I don't even know what to call it.
The platform is mounted directly on the wheel, has several adjustments, both in width and in height. Very handy when you are repairing a tall jeep or minibus. Of course, you can use, for example, a box to stand higher, but standing on the box is somewhat inconvenient and you can easily, at the most unnecessary moment, drive away from the wheel, and all that remains for you is to brake with your face against the hood ... probably everyone is familiar?

Mirror with telescopic handle and two magnets included (one swivel).
Such a set should be in every auto repairman.
Imagine a situation that when you unscrew the nut, you did not hold it, and it fell somewhere on the engine or gearbox. How to find and get it?
And here, a mirror and a magnet will come to your aid.

Looking at this set of special keys, it is immediately clear what it is for.
Using the extension and ratchet from the standard socket set, you can tighten almost any "awkward" nut in the engine compartment. Ideal for dismantling the steering gear or brake system.

This special torque wrench prevents you from accidentally stripping threads in modern aluminum engines.If you did not dare to purchase an electronic device for controlling the tightening torque, about which it was a little higher, then this very inexpensive key will be quite accurate and what the doctor ordered.
Two models of this tool (almost complete coverage of all values) will undoubtedly be a good purchase for your garage.

Undoubtedly, everyone faced this "nightmare" - when unscrewing a rusted old bolt, its cap breaks off (breaks off) and that's it ...
Dancing with a tambourine begins, drilling, thread restoration, etc.

With this set, in the photo below, you solve the whole problem at once in a complex. It has everything you need to accurately drill and remove what is left of a bolt with a diameter of 5 mm to 16 mm from the body.

If you still use an analog tester to check electrical circuits, then there is a very high probability that you will spoil the car's on-board computer.
The digital tester is safe as it does not use a ground cable. You simply stick it into the socket to test, or pierce the insulation of the wire (the stainless steel tip is sharp enough), and with your other hand touch any metal part of the car to complete the circuit.
Checking from 3 to 24 Volts DC works. It is possible to set a sound signal or turn on the LED to signal the presence of voltage.

A very useful tool for removing antifreeze hoses. After several years of operation, the antifreeze hoses in the places where they are tightened with clamps are firmly attached to the pipe. If you don’t want to cut the hose during dismantling and save it for later installation, then this special hook tool is what you need.
Simply insert the pointed end under the hose and pull it around the pipe.
This cool tool can save you a lot of money.

You can buy these and other sets on the largest portal amazon.com, you just need to look, some keys can be both in the metric system and in inches.
It is not yet so easy to acquire such a tool in Russia, except perhaps to search in online stores.
