Replacing the silent block of the lower rear arm of the front suspension Audi A4 / Passat B5
VIDEO
All work related to technical inspection and replacement of suspension parts can be conveniently performed on a lift or inspection ditch with an assistant. We check the tightness of the fasteners of all parts of the front suspension, tighten the loose connections. Before checking the backlash in the front suspension with the car at a standstill, we energetically swing the wheel by the upper part with our hands. In case of heavy knocks, check the tightness of the wheel bolts. If the bolts are well tightened, then we hang the wheel and ...
... swing it with both hands in a vertical plane. We repeat the check with the brake pedal depressed.
If the knock (backlash) disappears when the brake pedal is pressed, then its source is excessive clearances in the hub bearings (see. Adjusting the clearance in the front wheel hub bearings ). Potential knocking can be caused by ball joints. A defective one can be identified by touch by the play of the ball pin. We replace such a hinge. We replace the deformed axis of the lower arm (this is noticeable even by eye). If the wheel alignment angles do not lend themselves to adjustment, deformation of the body is possible, the mudguard struts are "overwhelmed", the side members and cross member are bent. We recommend checking the "geometry" of the body at the service station and, if necessary, replace the cross member.
We check the condition of the rubber-metal hinges in the following order:
we hang the front wheels of the car and make sure there is no deformation of the elements (see above);
the radial displacement of the thrust washer relative to the outer end of the outer sleeve of the rubber-metal hinge should not exceed 2.5 mm;
the distance between the thrust washer and the outer end of the outer sleeve of the hinge should be 3–7.5 mm for the lower and 1.5–5 mm for the upper arms.
Rubber-metal hinges must be replaced in case of ruptures and one-sided wear of the rubber. We check the condition of the lower ball joints in the following order:
After removing the wheel, we substitute a solid, stable wooden block 280 mm high under the hub and lower the car onto it. For safety, we put the removed wheel under the threshold of the car. Unscrew the tapered plug from the lower ball joint;
We measure the distance from the outer part of the hinge cover to the spherical head of the finger with a caliper depth gauge (for clarity, the stabilizer is removed). If this distance is more than 11.8 mm, the hinge is replaced.
We check the condition of the hinge dust covers. We replace the hinges with torn covers as an assembly. On the new ball joint, turn or deflect the ball pin in different directions. Backlash, free play of the finger or strong sticking is unacceptable. We carefully inspect the suspension springs. Sagging springs, as well as those with other damage, are replaced with new ones. We replace the deformed or worn out stabilizer bar. If the suspension rod mounting pads are worn out, we replace them with new ones. There should be no backlash in the shock absorber mountings. We make sure that the rubber-metal hinge in the lower attachment lug has no wear - cracking, delamination, etc., the bolt of its attachment is tightened. If there are strong leaks of working fluid on the shock absorber housing, we replace it with a new one. It is recommended to replace both shock absorbers at the same time. You can check the health of the shock absorbers while the vehicle is at a standstill. We swing the car by pressing the wing several times in the vertical direction. Having stopped pumping the car, we are convinced that the free vibrations of the body damp out in no more than 2 cycles. There should not be any knocks.

If your car engine has started to "eat" a lot of oil, then you must definitely find and fix the problem. The first thing you should pay attention to are the valve stem seals. Replacing the Skoda Fabia valve stem seals is a rather tedious procedure, but necessary. It includes not only installing new caps, but also changing the camshaft oil seal and valve cover gasket.
Without shock absorbers, driving a car would be like moving in a carriage - each pit would be clearly felt as a fifth point. A slight malfunction of this element leads not only to discomfort, but also to breakdown of other important parts of the machine. Replacing Skoda Fabia shock absorbers is not an easy task, but quite doable. Especially if there is a great desire.
The air in the cabin of the filter must always be clean and fresh, otherwise the driver and passengers will be uncomfortable. In addition, dirty air can lead to lung disease. For this purpose, a filter is installed in the stove and air conditioner.
A wheel bearing is a device that ensures uniform rotation of the wheel around the axis. It is available in 1 and 2 rows, open or closed. This part is constantly subjected to tremendous stress, but despite this, it is durable. The driver remembers about bearings only when the wheels start making an unpleasant noise. Although, if you operate the car correctly, then replacing the Skoda Fabia wheel bearing will not threaten you. If the problem is obvious, then there is no escape from the repair work.
Without a good fuel filter, the combustion engine will quickly clog up and fail. And such a break can be "treated" only with a major overhaul, which will cost, oh, how expensive. Therefore, it is better not to wait until the engine breaks down, but to proceed with such a procedure as replacing the Skoda Fabia fuel filter.
The gas distribution process in the engine must be constantly controlled. And this action is impossible without the timing belt, which connects the camshaft and crankshaft. Automakers constantly point out that this part needs to be changed after a certain amount of distance traveled, but many drivers do not even know where the belt is and what it is for.
Skoda Fabia can be equipped with different types of engines. In the event that they differ only in volume, only the amount of oil that needs to be poured into it changes. If there is a difference in fuel, then the replacement of the oil and the Skoda Fabia oil filter in this case is slightly different. We suggest you familiarize yourself with two options for changing the oil: in diesel and gasoline engines.
Skoda Fabia's coolant performs the same functions as on any other car.Without it, the car engine will quickly overheat and its lifespan will not be long. Therefore, it is necessary to timely replace such a liquid, since over time it loses its properties. Replacing the Skoda Fabia coolant should be done with a "cold" one. That is, if you have just driven a car, then let it stand for a while so that both the engine and the liquid cool down.
In case of malfunctions of the main parts of the steering column, no repairs will help you. Get ready for the replacement of the entire Skoda Fabia steering column. According to the rules of the road, driving with a faulty steering column is prohibited, so if any prerequisites for a breakdown were noticed, immediately start detecting the breakdown and eliminating it. Follow the step-by-step guide to successfully replace the steering column.
The new models of gear levers are designed so that all the insides are hidden and protected, at least with plastic. Previously, a cover was used to protect the insides of the gearbox from the passenger compartment. Old Skoda Fabia models made in this way. This element is not necessary for the car, but if it is not there, then moisture, dust, dirt can get into the gearbox, which will complicate the shifting.

The seat belt jammed in the back of the rear seat while tightening the covers. Below is a photo report of disassembling / assembling the backrest to access the belt reel, if anyone needs it. Of the required tools you will need: - Slotted screwdriver; - Socket head 17; -Bit "star" 10
First, you need to release the end of the belt screwed to the body, for ease of manipulation. In my case, it was a mandatory procedure.
Slide the backrest attachment clip counterclockwise
Then remove the plastic edging of the backrest upholstery from the grooves using a screwdriver. I started this action from the bottom of the left sidewall.
In the process of removing the edging, the aforementioned screwdriver may be required, because there are such stoppers in the clamp, which make it very difficult to remove.
When working, you should be careful, because my actions in the blind led to the following result.
It may be nothing, but not much pleasant. Here, by the way, is shown the removed left and most of the upper side of the upholstery.
Further, everything is quite simple. We pull back the upholstery with filler. Take the socket wrench and tighten the nut holding the belt tensioner.
Further actions as necessary, either replacing or unlocking the wedged belt tensioner, as in my case, and assembling in the reverse order.

Finally it came to Skoda !! AND photo report describing the replacement of the ball joint on the Skoda Fabia solemnly opens a new section on the site.
And without stretching the introduction, I want to remind you for what, the main reasons, you have to remove the ball joints - failure of the ball joint entirely (a characteristic knock, a creak in the car's suspension is difficult not to notice) and rupture of the anther of the ball joint (if you replace and replace the torn boot in time, this will help to significantly increase the life of the ball joint itself). Looking ahead, I will say that, in my case, the problem was just in the anther. But, whatever the reason was, you still have to remove the ball joint. Since it will be difficult to put a new boot on a support screwed to the lever. And why bother if it is enough to unscrew only three nuts and the ball will be in your hands !? I hope you agree with me 😉 Therefore, I will continue without further ado.
Spare parts ... When buying a ball joint for a Skoda Fabia, you should immediately clarify which side you need a part on. This is how the ball on the left side differs from the support on the right side. Skoda Fabia 2 ball joint part number on the left side along VAG 6R0 407 365 (Febi 36051 photos 1 and 2), on the right side of VAG 6R0 407 366 (Febi 36052). It is possible to put them the other way around, but not desirable, since this would be a direct disrespect for the design engineers!
So how to find original boot for Skoda Fabia ball joint I could not find it, then I cannot share the catalog number for this detail with you. I had to take off the ball and pick up the boot on my own, as they say "from what was." In principle, I managed to pick it up, so I report: Fabia was installed on the ball bearing boot from the steering tip VAZ-2108 (photo 3, 4, 5). Therefore, for those who, like me, will face a problem when looking for a native boot for Fabia's ball joint, I will leave the catalog number of the steering tip boot for VAZ 2108-2115 - 2108-2904070 and 2108-3414077.
A checklist of the tools you need for a successful and quick ball joint replacement : jack, wheel wrench, open-end wrench for 18, socket or box wrench for 16, hammer, soft metal (copper, aluminum) guide, pry bar or large screwdriver, jack-rhombus (for which it will be needed clearly from the further description ). At the place of work. It is advisable to change the ball on the inspection pit, but if this is not possible, then it is not critical. It will be possible to do everything “from the ground”, it will just be a little inconvenient))).
A detailed description of the replacement of the ball joint Skoda Fabia 2 (Skoda Fabia 2) :
We release the wheel bolts. We raise the car with a jack. We install insurance under the body (you can use a removed wheel for this purpose). We turn the steering wheel to the extreme left or right position (this must be done for easy access to the ball pin nut).
We unscrew the ball pin nut, the key is 18 (photos 6 and 7).
We take a guide and a hammer. We apply two or three clear blows. And, as a rule, the finger is pressed out of the steering knuckle eyelet (photo 8 and 9).
After that, it remains only to unscrew the three fastening nuts of the ball to the lever and the support in your hands (photos 10 and 11)
Next, we act according to the circumstances. If we change the ball joint entirely, then we can immediately start assembling. During installation, we use new nuts, which should be included with the ball.
If the support was removed to replace the boot, then before installing a new boot, the ball pin should be cleaned of old grease and dirt. Apply a small amount of new grease (Litol-24 or its imported counterparts will do), put on a new boot (photos 12, 13, 14, 15) and install the ball joint on the car.
When tightening the nut, the ball pin may start to spin. To fix it, it is enough to tighten the ball joint with a jack (photo 16)
Everything, with the replacement of the ball joint on the Skoda Fabia finished!
Skoda Fabia has been rolling off the assembly line of the Czech automaker for more than 10 years and is still very popular with domestic drivers. Over the years, the Fabia has gone through several modifications, but time has allowed us to calculate the characteristic features in the service of the Skoda Fabia.
All engines that are installed on the Skoda Fabia have a good resource, but each of them suffers from its own drawback. A 1.4-liter engine with 75 horsepower runs from 300 to 500 thousand kilometers without problems, vibrating at idle speed, which, combined with the service life, does not cause any particular complaints. Engine oil gets into the cooling system. At about 150-200 thousand kilometers, liner gaskets are pinched, and a similar phenomenon is quite common. Often, problems arise in the ignition coil. With an increase in mileage, it may be necessary to replace the timing chain: it stretches, but even in this state it serves for a long time, only increasing the fuel consumption indicators. The drive will begin to wear out a little earlier, at about 80-90 thousand kilometers, but only when the car owner saves on oil. Oil change in Skoda Fabia should be carried out in a timely manner. It is better to choose the brand recommended by the manufacturers or corresponding to it in terms of performance.
As for the 1.2-liter engine, its resource is half as much, and repairs may be required for the same reasons: a stretched timing chain, worn out cylinder pistons. It is worth monitoring the condition of the timing chain, changing it in time. It is recommended to renew the tensioner and damper every 90 thousand kilometers.
The fuel filter is located between the tank and the body sill on the right. Replacing it in the absence of an overpass or observation pit is a rather complicated matter. For different Skoda Fabia engines, the manufacturer has provided filters that differ from each other. Sometimes a pressure regulator is built into the filter, then before starting work, you need to relieve the pressure in the fuel system. Resetting is carried out by pressing the valve spool in the ramp. Before this, it is required to turn off the engine and close the driver's door, otherwise the pump will begin to pump out fuel. After installing the filter, you will need to release air that has entered the fuel system.
In the Skoda Fabia transmission, the main criticism is the clutch. Repair or replacement of the clutch will be required for 150-200 thousand kilometers. Replacement is simple and not too expensive, but repairing the Skoda Fabia automatic gearbox will cost a pretty penny to the car owner.
In Skoda Fabia, especially of the second generation, the power steering (GUR) often fails. Power steering contamination is the most common cause of malfunctions. Provide additional power booster insulation to protect against costly repairs.
The chassis of the Skoda Fabia generally works fine. The braking system is not satisfactory. The front pads must be changed after about 50 thousand kilometers, the rear ones - after 100 thousand kilometers along with the rear brake cylinders. If the replacement is carried out on your own, then be careful about the little things: for example, it is recommended to thoroughly clean the grooves for the tool on the front brake pads, otherwise there is a risk of ripping off the bolt, and then it will be difficult and expensive to get the stuck part. If you do not want to clean the bolts every time, it is worth purchasing protective caps in advance. Rear brakes are usually drum-type. The rear pads are of good quality, but they also need to be inspected and lubricated regularly. When the thickness of the overlays becomes less than one and a half millimeters, they should be changed. Changing the pads will entail removing the hub.

Electronics does not cause serious problems. As a rule, the nature of breakdowns in this area is not systematic for the Skoda Fabia, and the repair is quite simple. For example, replacing bulbs in headlights does not require any special preparation, for this you just need to unfasten a couple of latches and remove the cap; an opening will open through which it is convenient to inspect the lantern and everything that is adjacent to it. The turn signals also change very simply: the manufacturers have provided for the presence of a special holder for the cartridge. The latter is removed from the body together with the burned out lamp. Do not use jumpers or fuses that are rated for a different amperage for replacement, as this may cause malfunctions in the operation of the devices.
Repairing a Skoda Fabia is generally quite cheap. With regular service and diagnostics, you can do without unnecessary replacements. The standard operating manual of the model contains all the rules for safe handling of the car. The repair manual will tell you what and how best to fix it. It is difficult to find the required spare parts for the old Fabias. In such situations, disassembly helps, where you can find suitable originals or analogs.
As you know, it is not recommended to operate a Skoda Fabia with a defective brake drum. This is because it reduces the life of the brake pads, and braking becomes less effective and is distributed unevenly between the wheels. And this means that when braking, the car can easily skid.
The purpose of this article is to tell you how to properly change a brake drum. But first you need to figure out which drum is considered defective.
Signs of a defective Skoda Fabia brake drum
1. The inside diameter is out of specification. And the norm is as follows: 200-201 mm.
2. The drum has chips and risks.
3. The brake drum is now oval.
Do-it-yourself Skoda Fabia brake drum replacement
1. Loosen the wheel bolts while the machine is on the ground.
2. Check the position of the handbrake. It must be lowered all the way.
3. Using a jack or hoist, lift the part where you intend to change the drum and remove the wheel.
4. Compress the brake pads. To do this, insert a screwdriver into the hole where the bolts for fastening the wheel are placed, and use it to squeeze the adjusting wedge (there is a special protrusion on it that will allow you to do this without difficulty), pointing it up. To make it clearer, see the figure below.
5. Then unscrew the number 1 screw shown in the figure below. This screw secures the drum to the wheel hub.
6. Then remove the brake drum. In the picture below, it is numbered 2. If you cannot remove it with the force of your hand, then take a rubber mallet and knock it on the drum. If you do not have a rubber hammer, use the usual one - just attach a piece of wood to the drum itself.
7. Put a new one in place of the defective drum, and then tighten the screw No. 1. In this case, the tightening torque should be equal to 4 Nm.
8. Place the wheel and tighten the bolts securing it - just not completely.
9.Lower the machine and tighten the bolts until they stop.
10. Press the brake several times to adjust the brake pad installation position.
That's all. With this information, you can easily replace the Skoda Fabia brake drum, thereby saving money.
