The essence of the problem

Under a certain set of circumstances, the block of magnetic heads of a hard disk may not have time to park in a regular parking place and the heads fall directly onto the disk platters in an arbitrary place. In this case, the heads stick to the surface of the plates, which prevents the hard disk from spinning the engine and starting to work. This malfunction in the overwhelming majority of cases occurs on portable drives with a USB interface and 2.5 ″ drives installed in laptops. To recover data from such a HDD, it is necessary to use special tools to bring the stuck heads to a parking space and replace them with new ones from the same serviceable drive.

The reasons for the sticking of the magnetic head unit:

  • various mechanical influences on the drive, shocks, falls, vibrations;
  • incorrect disconnection of the hard disk from a working computer;
  • insufficient power when connected via USB.

Symptoms of a sticky magnetic head unit:

  • The hard drive does not spin up;
  • HDD emits quiet periodic sounds;
  • the hard drive is not detected either in the BIOS or in the operating system;
  • USB drives can be detected in the operating system, but not show their size.

Impact of malfunction on user files

By itself, this malfunction does not affect the user's files, since ideally, after replacing the magnetic head unit, the entire volume of the disk becomes available for reading. The problem usually lies in the fact that heads usually do not fail just like that. In most cases, this is due to the contact of the heads with the magnetic plates that store information. In this case, not only the magnetic heads are usually damaged, but also the plates themselves. Therefore, when the head unit is replaced, the damages that they received when the native disk heads fail remain on the plates. These can be micro-scratches and damaged, unreadable sectors. Accordingly, these damaged areas can potentially contain user data, some of which can be damaged.

Information recovery technique for HDD heads sticking

To recover data from a hard disk with stuck heads, it is necessary to remove the damaged block of magnetic heads from the disk and replace it with a serviceable one from a disk of the same model and size. After replacing the magnetic head unit, on the PC3000 Data Extractor hardware and software complex, a sector-by-sector copy of the damaged disk to a working drive is performed. When the copy is complete, you need to check the file system for errors, lost files and folders. If during the testing process damage to the logical data structure is revealed, then it is necessary to correct the errors and search for lost files.

In order to detach the heads, it is necessary, in any case, to open the HDA, and this will lead to depressurization of the entire structure of the HDD, changing many of the factory positions of the elements and parameters of the hard drive. Accordingly, even if we assume that the native disk heads after unsticking will turn out to be serviceable, the disk will still not read and write with the same characteristics as it was released from the factory. Also, it often happens that during sticking, the heads leave physical damage on the disc platters. In the overwhelming majority of cases, the magnetic heads will not work after unsticking, becausewhen hitting the HDD plates, they fail and they need to be replaced from a similar hard drive of the same model and volume.

What not to do if the magnetic head block is stuck:

  • Do not open the HDA because dust will get there, which will worsen the condition of the magnetic plates;
  • you should not try to peel off the heads that are stuck to the magnetic plates on your own, because without special skills and tools, the heads will bend and scratch the HDD platters.
  • a disc with stuck heads must not be shaken, twisted in the hands and any external influences must be applied in the hope that the heads will unstick themselves and the disc will work; under such influences on a stuck disk, the head mounts usually bend and the heads scratch the surface of the magnetic plates;
  • It is not recommended to give a damaged disk to system administrators and familiar computer specialists who do not have a narrow specialization in hard disk repair, because there are frequent cases of an increase in the number of damages on the disk due to unskilled intervention.

Therefore, it makes sense to contact the masters only when the information stored on the disk is very important.

In a normal state, the drive should not make any sounds other than noise during reading or writing. If you hear uncharacteristic squeaks, pops, clicks, knocks or even scratches, it is very important to stop using the damaged HDD as soon as possible.

Depending on the severity of the damage, the drive may not be detected in the BIOS, stop abruptly, or, on the contrary, unsuccessfully try to start spinning up.

Laboratory for information recovery from digital media

The client in this case of data recovery had a problem and soon enough this problem turned into two problems. Their first problem was that they accidentally deleted a bunch of their documents from their Samsung external hard drive. Their second problem was that, while disconnecting him from the computer, he slid off the table and onto the floor.

Fortunately for the customer, HDDSAVE data recovery engineers have proven to be experts in solving both problems. Firstly, our engineers in our clean room carried out the necessary work to start data recovery. Then it was necessary to create as perfect an image of the failed disk as possible.

Troubleshooting physical hard drive problems

In a clean room, our engineers took a close look at this Samsung hard drive. It turned out to be in relatively good condition. Our engineers did not find any visible damage to the hard disk platters. In addition, the read / write heads worked reasonably well, or at least most of them.

Most hard drives have more than one platter and store data on both surfaces of each pancake. And so of course they have multiple read / write heads. Hard drive manufacturers stack heads on top of each other and the entire head moves as one (BMG). All heads except one on this ST1000LM024 hard drive were found to be working properly.

Data stored on hard drives is spread across all surfaces simultaneously. And so all of your files end up on the surface of every pancake. The data stored on your hard disk "jumps" from one disk platter to another, usually in steps of tens or hundreds of thousands of sectors (depending on the manufacturer). Often times, one file is located on several surfaces in parts, so, of course, we had to completely replace the magnetic head unit of the hard drive.

Recover Deleted Data After Hard Drive Failure

After replacing BMG, 99.8% of the plate surfaces were read. Further, our data recovery specialists can use this image to find deleted files.

When you delete files from your hard drive, the file system makes some changes. NTFS keeps a record of used and unused data clusters in a BITMAP file. Instead of automatically deleting your data, the file system moves the clusters containing files to "unused" ones. The files still exist - but have been thrown out of the filesystem indexing. However, continuing to use the hard drive after deleting files may cause those deleted files to be overwritten with new data and the data will be lost forever. Since the client immediately unplugged the drive after deleting the files, we weren't worried about overwriting.

Our data recovery engineers managed to recover 98% of files from damaged ST1000LM024 disk including data that was accidentally deleted.

The screw is connected via a SATA-USB controller (sold as a branded pocket as a gift for a Kingston SSD).

Can you please:
1) assess the condition and the possibility of further operation
2) decipher the indicator "temperature"
3) suggest the optimal method for transferring data from section No. 3 (letter A:).At the moment, the data from there is read normally.
4) method for recovering OS key from RAW partition # 2 (letter J :)
5) explain why such a large factory section number 4 and how it can be removed (EMNIP, the laptop came without a pre-installed OS)

On modern laptops, the manufacturer places a dedicated partition (OEM) for system recovery in the event of a major failure. In fact, there is stored an image of the system that comes, as they say, out of the box. In some cases, when you change the hard drive or the availability of free space is more important to you than the recovery tools, there is a need to delete this partition. It is impossible to do this through the Disk Management Console, but there is a way out (without using third-party programs).

Run the CMD console as administrator and run the following command sequence:
