When you independently repair walls and ceilings in an apartment, you have to rise to a height. Professional craftsmen have special goats for these purposes. When performing repair work at a height, home craftsmen use a stepladder or a table in the apartment, usually a kitchen table, since it is small and easier to move.But working from a ladder is very inconvenient, legs quickly get tired and you can only reach a small area of the surface. It is convenient to work from the kitchen table, but you have to climb onto it using a stool or chair. During repairs, you often have to knock with a hammer, or work with a saw or chisel. Here a stepladder will not help, and the table can be inadvertently ruined by damaging its appearance.It is possible to create comfortable conditions for working at height by spending quite a bit of time, making a table with a step from improvised materials to carry out repair work.The table is made of laminated chipboard from old furniture. Its height is 75 cm, at the level of 45 cm, a step of 20 × 30 cm was made, thanks to which it is easy to climb the table. The base of the table is 30 cm wide, which provides sufficient stability when standing on it. The table top measures 40 × 50 cm and is symmetrically fixed to the base with four self-tapping screws. All parts of the table are interconnected with wood screws 70 mm long. Although high quality is not presented to the ends of chipboard, it is best to cut them with a saw with fine teeth so that they are even sheets.Three bridges between the side walls, 27 cm long and a step 30 cm long, provide sufficient rigidity for the base of the table. The photographs clearly show how these parts are installed. The width of the jumpers should be at least 10 cm, so that it is possible to screw two self-tapping screws on each side into the end. My jumpers are about 20 cm wide.When assembling the base of the table for repair, the screws must be tightened at a distance of 8 mm from the edge (for chipboard with a thickness of 16 mm), thus ensuring an accurate hit in the middle of the boards. Before screwing in the self-tapping screws, it is better to drill through a hard layer of the chipboard surface. Then it will be easier to screw in and the self-tapping screw will not go to the side.The height of the repair table I made is due to the size of the chipboard boards that were in stock. From such a height, walls and ceilings up to 1.5 m wide with a ceiling height of up to 2.5 m can be grasped during repairs. If the ceilings are higher, then you can make the table a higher height and add another step. The weight of the table turned out to be about 15 kg, and it is not difficult to carry it. The main thing is to go down and up to the table for repair, thanks to the presence of a step, it is not difficult.It is easy to fix a vice on the table and perform sawing work, use it as a tool holder when repairing the lower part of the walls. During the repair process, you have to sharpen trowels, a chisel, refuel drills. The table can successfully serve as a workbench; using a clamp it is not difficult to fix an emery column on the tabletop.I started a major overhaul of the hallway. The height to the ceilings is three meters and there was a need for a set of tools and materials at hand at a height. I had to modify the design of the table, make the simplest, but so necessary stand.I decided to make the stand easily removable so as not to interfere when using the table for working on the floor.Therefore, in the table top, to fix the supports of the stand, in the place where the support board passes under it, two holes with a diameter of 12 mm and a depth of 50 mm were drilled with a perk drill.The base of the stand, measuring 20 × 30 mm, is cut from a chipboard sheet from old furniture.In order to prevent the tool from slipping during operation, on the sides of the base, ribs with a height of 3 mm are made from strips of fiberglass, fixed to the base of the stand with the help of post nails.The material for the base of the stand can be successfully used as a board or plywood with a thickness of 8-12 mm, a sheet of metal with a thickness of 1-1.5 mm, and any other material.The support for the stand was 12 mm diameter aluminum tubes fixed with three short self-tapping screws to the base of the stand with flanges. Tubes will fit from unnecessary ski poles.The stand is ready, now it is enough to insert the supports into the table for repairs and you can start working at height with all the conveniences.If there is not enough space on the stand, then you can install a tray on it and put everything you need into it. I use a plastic turntable cover for the tray.With a greater weight of the tool and materials, the stand can, to give it stability, rest against the wall. In this case, up to 10 kg of weight can be placed on the stand.Another stand, if a larger tray is installed on it, significantly reduces the amount of dust and dirt on the floor when cleaning walls and ceilings from old whitewash poured plaster. The drop height of the cleaners is reduced, as it falls into the tray, and the dust becomes much less. But even so, you should not neglect safety measures and wear a respirator or, in extreme cases, a gauze bandage.In the photo, I am at work, I began to clean the concrete beam from lime plaster, which looks like the whole curve and you need to put its appearance in order with the help of rotband and putty.The main advantage of a table for repair with a stand is the economy of effort, which has to be spent a lot when performing repair work, ease of use, on which the quality of the final result of the repair performed depends. If the legs are very loose, it is better to disassemble the table and carry out further restoration disassembled.The purpose of this process is to remove the old paintwork and prepare the table for subsequent refinishing.For sanding, we need a sandpaper. Further, for better removal of old varnish and leveling the surface, you can use a finer sandpaper. If you have a sander, the sanding process will be much faster.

When sanding, it is important not to overdo it or sand down holes.

If the table is made of natural wood, it is better to treat it with a special impregnation, which will protect it from pests and diseases.

Leave the parts to dry for a while. Then we cover all the cracks with putty. After complete drying, we grind the putty again with a fine sandpaper

If the table is made of chipboard, you need to inspect the table top and determine if there are bubbles on the surface. If there is, then the veneer is peeling.

Such a defect can be corrected by making an incision on the surface of the bubble with a thin knife. After that, you need to apply glue with a syringe into the hole. Then we take a regular iron and iron the surface of the table until the veneer sticks.

Let's start painting. We take paint or varnish, depending on your taste, brush and paint. You may need to paint in two or three coats.

This is determined in the course of restoration work, depending on what kind of appearance we want to get. Let the paint dry well.

When all the parts are well dry, we proceed to the assembly of the product.

We leave the assembled furniture until the glue is completely dry and the parts set.

So we examined the main stages of the restoration of a wooden table. We wish you to try to do the repair yourself and be satisfied with the result.

Such a table was brought for restoration. Very badly damaged countertop, raised and burnt veneer.

In some places, the veneer fell off

Over time, the varnish wiped off, the legs are chipped, beaten

The first thing we do is remove the countertop. Unfortunately, it cannot be restored. the solid wood from which it was made curved very strongly over time and the tabletop acquired the shape of a “boat”. In the photo you can see how uneven the surface of the countertop has become, i.e. its functionality is lost.

If you try to straighten her, then this must be done under pressure, and the press will split her. So, I had to leave her as a donor for subsequent restorations. And on this table, make a new tabletop.

We remove the old countertop, gently prying it evenly on all sides, so as not to damage the underframe.

After removing the tabletop, we see that the array of the underframe is broken in several places.

We separate these faults, so that the underframe could be restored.

Using a mallet and a hammer, carefully knock the legs out of the underframe

Do not forget to mark the leg and the place on the underframe so as not to guess which leg to attach back to :)

The lower crosshair (the legs are attached to each other from below) is also in poor condition. One element is completely broken off, the joints on the dowels parted and cracked.

I had to completely disassemble all this in some places, I even had to break it to restore it further :))

To glue these broken parts, I had to use self-tapping screws, i.e. drill, grease with glue and tighten the components with self-tapping screws. Because it is impossible to get close with clamps, there are no flat planes.

After the glue dries, this is about 12 hours, the screws are unscrewed.

Now it's time to remove the old cover.

In the past MK I have shown the removal of the coating by stripping. This trick did not work on this table, the coating is so strong that it practically did not lend itself to washing (in its various forms)

Therefore, in this case, we will grind it. It is certainly more difficult and much longer :(

We use the “Iron” grinder on flat parts.

In thin profiles and carvings, nothing can be done with a machine, you have to manually grind every bend, every detail

In the grooves, I carefully work with fine-grained sanding paper.

And on convex and rounded surfaces I work with scotch-bright so as not to remove unnecessary

Now we start gluing the broken underframe. We coat all joints with glue and tighten the entire structure with clamps

First, we connect the parts, install the clamps.You can also see a loose connection.

And then we begin to tighten with clamps, but not both at once, but alternately as the gaps decrease, until the component parts are tightly connected.

After the underframe has dried, we look at how the legs sit in their nests

I ordered a new tabletop from a furniture factory, it was made on the basis of the old walnut tabletop, following the old Envelope pattern.

In the original, the tabletop was attached to the subframe “tightly”, i.e. was non-removable, at the request of the customer, I made the new tabletop removable so that the table could be easily moved between rooms, otherwise the table would not pass into a standard modern doorway.

It's time to glue the legs with the bottom joint. First, we bait without glue, we watch how it rises. Then we coat all the dowels and holes with glue and tighten with clamps for 12 hours.

and again we try on the entire structure on the underframe, make sure that everything fits into place and leave it to stick together in this position. If we start to remove and rearrange, then at this time the clamp can move imperceptibly for the eye and the detail will not fall into place later.

A huge and most basic restoration work has been done. Now let's move on to “water procedures”! :))

But seriously, no less important work remains, this is staining, priming and application of finishing varnish.

Stain with water stain. Because the walnut massif is very dense, deeper penetration is required, which is exactly what water stain possesses.

Staining and priming with transparent soil is carried out separately - underframe with legs and tabletop.

We prime it with transparent soil and be sure to grind it out, draw out the plane. This worktop has three coats of sanding primer.

The carved parts between the layers of soil must be matted (easily grinded) with adhesive tape for adhesion to the next layer.

And finally, we prepare the surface for applying the finishing varnish. Carefully remove all sanding dust.

Of course, very elegant, crazy beauty, brightness of color, saturation, but unfortunately this elegance does not correspond to the venerable age of the table and looks too flashy. The task of the customer was that the table did not look like a remake. Therefore, it was decided to transfer it to a silky matte varnish.

The best way to update a dilapidated table is to paint it, but the surface needs to be prepared first. The paint and varnish remover will help to clean the product from the previous finish.

If there is rust on the metal legs or accessories, soak it abundantly with vinegar, Coca-Cola or a special agent, and after 15-20 minutes wipe it with a hard scraper.

The wood is sanded with sandpaper, dust is removed, then impregnated with an antiseptic and a primer is applied. All chips, cracks and irregularities are rubbed with acrylic putty on wood.

For painting, you can use alkyd enamel, acrylic or epoxy paints, varnishes, aerosol compositions for metal. You will also need painting tools - a brush, roller, sponge, spray.

To give the table a more spectacular look, you can paint it not entirely, but only individual parts. For this, masking tape or stencils will come in handy.

If a plain finish seems too boring, try decorating an old table with patterns. Drawings can be applied with a brush and acrylic paints - by hand, through a stencil or along the lines made with tracing paper.

A table with artistic painting will perfectly complement an interior in ethnic or rustic style, and images of animals, fairy-tale and cartoon characters will appeal to children.

For such a decor, you will need a brush, patterned paper napkins, PVA glue and clear furniture varnish.

Pictures are carefully torn off or cut out with scissors, the lower layers of paper are removed, then the resulting thin applications are placed in the designated place, and coated with glue on top, trying to avoid folds and tears.

If some element cannot be attached the first time, it must be immediately wiped off with a sponge soaked in warm water, and try again with a similar fragment.

Dried decoupage is covered with several layers of transparent varnish for furniture, otherwise the paper decor will quickly be erased.

Craquelure is a cracking varnish, with the help of which the product is deliberately given a look that imitates the texture of old paintings. It can be one-step (the composition is applied in one layer and cracks as it dries) and two-step (two mixtures are used - one based on epoxy resins, the other on a water basis, they interact and a characteristic texture is obtained). The color of the veins is determined by the undercoat of acrylic paint and by the shade of the grout. Most often, a powdery golden pigment or pastel is used for this purpose.

A two-step craquelure is usually complemented by decoupage or hand-painted to achieve the effect of an aged picture. One-step is more suitable for products without drawings.

It happens that after the repair there is a small supply of ceramic tiles. It can be used to decorate an old table - just tile a wooden base with tiles. The laying technology in this case practically does not differ from wall or floor decoration.

The ceramic surface is ideal for a table in the kitchen, terrace, porch, gazebo or even outdoors.

To give the table an attractive look, in addition to plain tiles, it is worth using patterned borders, decorative panels (perhaps even with some subjects) or stylish patchwork.

Small fragment paintings decorate many galleries, temples and palaces. They will look just as exquisite in the house, for example, on the surface of coffee tables.

Mosaic elements can be ceramic (even broken tiles are suitable), glass or acrylic.

From the materials at hand, small round wood cuts, cut CDs, colored pebbles are suitable. It is enough just to come up with an interesting pattern and attach the pieces to the table with glue or liquid nails.

The simplest and most beautiful option for decorating an old table, which does not require fiddling with paints, is gluing a film.

This available material can mimic any surface - from rare woods to marble, it can have any kind of patterns, patterns and textures.

Self-adhesive film is on sale in rolls, and it is easy and pleasant to use it.

In the stores of stationery and goods for creativity, a wide selection of decorative self-adhesive tapes has recently been presented. It will take you no more than 30-40 minutes to decorate the old table with multi-colored tape, and a new bright thing will appear in the interior.

If you want to change the finish, the adhesive strips can be removed just as quickly, and if glue remains somewhere, acetone will dissolve it without any problems.

Epoxy is a liquid substance that hardens quickly in the open air, turning into a hard, transparent plastic.

Cracks in wood filled in this way look very unusual, and if you add luminescent powder to the liquid phase, they will glow brightly in the dark.

Also, dried flowers, leaves, shells, coins can be placed in epoxy resin, and due to the transparency of the substance, you get the effect of ice or amber.

An original decoration of a table for the living room will turn out if you make a recess inside it, placing there any thematic decor (sand with shells and starfish, moss or miniature cacti, Christmas balls and branches, small car models, beads, etc.), and close the top with transparent glass.

Painting the table through tulle should be done over the base layer with a pigment of a contrasting color. Before this, the lace must be firmly fixed to the surface so that it does not move and there is no gap. For the same reason, it is advisable to use an aerosol or spray bottle.

Gold monograms are a wonderful decoration for a table in a classic style. They can be stencilled with glittering acrylic paint, but a more realistic effect can be obtained with overlay. In essence, it is the thinnest foil imitating precious metals that is used for artistic purposes.

So that the gilding does not crumble, it is covered with transparent varnish on top.
