I would like to note right away that the principle of tightening the handbrake on the models of the Russian car industry is the same and it does not matter what kind of car you have, an old VAZ 2101 or VAZ 2109, VAZ 2110 or VAZ 2115, the whole process of work is the same and is not at all complicated.
Adjusting the handbrake does not require any serious knowledge and in order to tighten the parking brake cable it is not necessary to go to the service station, it is quite possible to cope on its own in your own garage. The first step is to understand what types of work you need to do and determine the malfunction, because it is not always possible to do with adjusting the handbrake, you may need to replace the handbrake cable or brake pads.
Possible causes and malfunctions:
- Does not hold the handbrake on slopes.
- Broken parking brake cable.
- Sticking of the cable in the casing (sheath).
- Brake pad wear.
So, if the parking brake does not hold due to a broken cable or wear of the linings, then it is simply impossible to do without further replacement of these parts.
But, and if you are sure that your pads are in order or you changed them not long ago and the parking brake cable is not torn and does not stick in the casing, then you can safely proceed with the adjustment.
So, before pulling up the handbrake, we need two thirteen keys, pliers, a brush for metal, a jack.
The easiest way to tighten the lift is on a lift, but if this is not available, we drive into the pit and jack up the rear of the car so that the rear wheels rotate freely. You can also check the bearings on the axle shafts at the same time.
This is done so that during the adjustment process we do not pinch the brake pads too much, the wheels should rotate freely when the handbrake is released, there should not be any jamming.
Attention! An overtightened handbrake can lead to rapid wear of the pads, as well as overheating.
After you have suspended the back of the machine, we climb under it with a brush and clean the threaded part of the adjusting bolt from dirt, if there is one.
Using open-end wrenches, release the lock nut of the adjusting bolt of photo 1, then use the pliers to hold the bolt of the parking brake cable, and using a thirteen key, tighten the nut of photo 2.
After we slightly tightened the nut, we check the parking brake adjustment, pull up the parking brake lever in the car, while it should be from three to five clicks, this is the most optimal result, so to speak.
But in fact, it is not so important how many clicks you have, the main thing is that the handbrake holds well and the car does not roll on slopes, because this is its main function.
But the main point is that when the parking brake lever is released, the wheels should rotate freely, that is, when rotating, they should not be pinched and not even wedged when you turn them by hand.
After you have adjusted the handbrake, do not forget to tighten the locknut and it is advisable to process all the threaded connection with Movil.
This will allow you to easily adjust the handbrake in the future, since Movil perfectly protects threaded connections from rust.
Finally, I would like to give a little advice, try not to put the handbrake on the car in the winter season, as this can lead to freezing of the rear pads to the drum and you will not be able to continue driving further.
