In detail: vaz 2110 do-it-yourself thermostat repair from a real master for the site my.housecope.com.
The thermostat is a key part in the VAZ-2110 cooling system. Despite its modest size, it is this part that protects the engine from overheating, since it allows the coolant to circulate, first in a small, and then in a large circle. If suddenly the VAZ-2110 engine began to overheat, it is possible that this indicates a thermostat failure.
The location is indicated by an arrow.
Replacing one of the main parts of the cooling system begins with its dismantling. It should be noted that this procedure will have to be carried out not only to replace the thermostat, but also to check it.
Before starting work, you need to prepare the following tools:
- Two plastic canisters, 5 liters each. They will be needed to drain the coolant.
- Empty plastic bottle.
- Crosshead screwdriver;
- Several wrenches. Most likely, you will need keys for 8 and 12.
Having prepared the place and tools, you can proceed with the procedure for removing the thermostat from the car. Disassembly occurs according to the following algorithm:
-
First you need to unscrew the bolts that hold the air filter housing. To do this, you need a key for 8, which will have to unscrew two bolts.
We squeeze out the rubber mounts from the holes in the radiator frame.
Remove the DMRV sensor from the casing.
Removing the filter, we get open access to the thermostat.
Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the clamp on the supply hose.
We remove the pipe and drain the antifreeze.
During repairs, you need to pay attention to the condition of the pipes. If they are badly worn, then it is better to replace them. You can also change the coolant and air filter at the same time.

Next, you need to assemble the air filter and pour antifreeze into the system through the tank. Before starting off, you need to start the engine and check the coolant circulation through the system. This will help get rid of air congestion. If the level of antifreeze in the tank has dropped, it must be topped up.
Since the thermostat is a fairly simple part, it only needs to be changed in three cases:
- If the valve is stuck closed and antifreeze runs only in a small circle .
- If the valve is stuck open and the coolant circulates only in a large circle ... The same point can be attributed to cases when the valve wedges in the half-open position.
- If the machine is operated in a hot climate, and the standard thermostat cannot handle the load , it also needs to be replaced with another model that will be designed for use in hot climates.
If the thermostat replacement procedure is neglected in these cases, it could overheat the engine, or even seize it. An engine on a VAZ-2110 is difficult to kill, but such a "trifle" is capable of doing it!
An old thermostat can jam, and even a new one if the product is of poor quality.
As for the case when the valve is stuck closed, it is very dangerous for the engine.
Of course, each of the drivers in the summer watched a picture of cars standing with an open hood, from under which steam was pouring, and a puddle was spreading under the car. This situation occurs due to overheating of the coolant, which expands when heated, bursting pipes or a radiator.
While many drivers regret a burst radiator, this is not the worst thing that can happen. It so happens that an overheated engine simply wedges, since the metal expands very strongly when heated. Therefore, the temperature of the antifreeze must be monitored constantly.
If the temperature sensor is out of order, then an experienced driver can determine the temperature rise from the behavior of the car. When the engine overheats, it starts to "dull", that is, slowly gaining momentum and speed. In this case, it is recommended to stop driving quickly and wait until the motor has cooled down.
If the thermostat valve gets stuck open, then in summer it may not even be noticed. In winter, this problem can be identified by the slow heating of the passenger compartment.
The thermostat is tested in a container with water of a certain temperature.
If the car owner wants to determine the performance of the thermostat with one hundred percent probability, then it must be dismantled from the car and checked in water by heating. The removal procedure will be described below, and the thermostat itself is checked as follows:
- The device is removed from the car and placed in a container with hot water or antifreeze. You need to prepare a thermometer to accurately determine the temperature.
- The initial temperature should be around 70-80 degrees.
- Then the temperature of the liquid should be gradually increased to 90 degrees.
- Upon reaching 90 degrees, the thermostat valve should open fully. After the thermostat is removed from the water, the valve should close. If this does not happen, the device needs to be replaced.
In addition, it is advisable to replace even a fully working thermostat if its body has various chips and cracks.
If the thermostat is collapsible, only the top cover with the valve can be replaced.
As for the acquisition of a new thermostat for the VAZ-2110, a feature of this model is the ability to replace only one starting element. It will cost half the price.
Although the cost of the assembled device is also, as a rule, low and fluctuates around 1,000 rubles.
On the left is a 5-hole thermostat, on the right is a 6-hole thermostat.
When buying a thermostat, remember that they are old and new ... If your car has an old-style part installed, and the store only has new-design parts in stock, do not be upset. With the ingenuity and a hacksaw for metal, the new part is perfectly installed in place of the old-style part.
Installation of a 6-hole thermostat.
To do this, you only need to saw off a piece of the pipe that comes from the pump, and then disconnect the piece from the old part. After these manipulations, the new sample thermostat will perfectly fit into the car's cooling system.
Since when buying spare parts for domestic cars there is a chance to purchase a defective part, you can check it for leaks before buying a thermostat. To do this, you just need to blow hard into the fitting. If the case is sealed, then the air must remain inside. If the air comes out, then such a part is not worth purchasing.
The original thermostat, which was installed in production, has an article 2110–1306010... It is inexpensive, but its quality does not differ in stability. Most owners of the VAZ-2110 prefer to purchase analogues that last much longer.
All foreign analogues are much more expensive, but by installing them, the owners lose the headache associated with the operation of the thermostat. Parts are in demand Fenox, Pekar, Finwhale, Luzar .

Replacing a thermostat with a VAZ-2110 is a simple process. The main thing is to do everything carefully and not to pull out the pipes by force.
Refinement of the thermostat brings its pros and cons. In this article, we will focus on how you can remake the VAZ 2110 thermostat yourself, and what is required for this.
Why is it warmer in cars with a 6-hole thermostat?
Hello everyone! My name is Mikhail, now I'll tell you a story about how I managed to exchange a dvenashka for a 2010 Camry.It all started with the fact that I was wildly annoyed by the breakdowns of the two, like nothing serious broke down, but the little things, damn it, so many things that really started to enrage. Here the idea was born that it was time to change the car to a foreign car. The choice fell on the tayet Camry of the tenths.
It is warmer in them not because the sixth choke has appeared there, but because of the decrease in the bypass of the channel.
And the new fitting serves to get rid of the constantly leaking tee of the stove return.
I want to note right away that when narrowing the bypass channel in a 5-hole thermostat (TC), there may be problems:
Problems with washing the thermocouple... That is, if in the 6-hole thermoelement the bypass coolant and the coolant of the outlet (cold) stove pipe are washed, then only the bypass coolant is washed in the 5-hole thermoelement.
In order to reduce the bypass to the desired value, you can cut a plate out of an aluminum plate.
The plate should fit exactly inside, as shown in the figure.
Further the plate needs to be fixed, for this you can use cold welding or rivets.
Make sure that the rivets do not interfere with the closure of the small circle.
After we drill a new hole in the plate.
Another mounting option.
Unlike 5-hole TS in a 6-hole vehicle I do not see a single problem with narrowing the bypass ! Because in addition to the bypass coolant, coolant from the stove also gets to the thermocouple.
The technology for reducing the bypass of the channel is exactly the same here, except that we are connecting the return of the stove to the vehicle. On this fitting:
What is the difference after reducing the bypass?
The difference will be that the temperature of the coolant entering the thermocouple will depend on the percentage of coolant that has passed through the heater and passed directly through the bypass. And also from falling t in the heater radiator.
If the drop in t in the heater radiator depends to a greater extent on the load on the radiator - the outside air temperature and fan speed, respectively, then the percentage of the flows under consideration depends on the diameter of the bypass.
Accordingly, the more we reduce the bypass, the stronger the dependence of t of the engine on the load on the stove will be.
Result after reducing the channel bypass on a 5-hole thermostat to 6mm (I believe that it could be reduced to 4mm)

The VAZ 2110 thermostat ("native" or more effective from "Lada Grant") is not difficult to replace on your own in cases where it fails.
Probably every more or less experienced driver knows that a thermostat is a device that is responsible for the competent redistribution of fluid flows in a car engine.
In the process of active operation of the machine, this device can jam on a small or large circulation circle, which will cause the motor to underheat or overheat.
It is clear that a vehicle with a faulty cooling system cannot be used, which means that the owner of the car will have to replace the device that has failed.
But before that, you should make sure that such a replacement is really necessary. That is, you need to check the thermostat for operability. This is done without dismantling the engine in this way: we start the engine and direct all our attention to the instrument panel, where the temperature of the liquid for cooling is shown. The main valve of the device of interest to us opens at temperatures from +83 to +87 ° C. If the engine has a lower temperature reading, the fluid moves in a small circle (that is, the valve is closed).
To establish whether the thermostat is working or not, you can quite simply - touch the vehicle cooling radiator and its lower hose. If the hose is colder to the touch, it means that the device is in the closed position (there is no coolant supply to the radiator). At 102 degrees, the radiator valve opens fully. In this case, the lower pipe and the upper zone of the radiator should be noticeably hot / (but the lower zone is colder). If you do not feel the heating with your hand, it becomes clear that the thermostat needs to be changed.
The scheme for performing the procedure is as follows:
- the car battery is dismantled;
- the plug is removed from the expansion tank;
- the drain plug located at the bottom of the radiator is unscrewed;
- liquid is drained from the tank, after which the plug can be tightened;
- on the thermostat nozzles, the tightening of the hose clamps is loosened;
- the hoses are dismantled (both rear and front);
- unscrew the bolts (there are three of them) that secure the thermostat cover, and remove it.
In order to remove the thermostat from the lid, it is best to install the latter in a locksmith's vice (sponges or soft pads will need to be mounted on them to protect the aluminum surface from scratches). After that, we press down the plate fixing the thermostat (the spring will resist, you will have to apply some effort), turn it and remove it from the grooves. Now the device of interest to us can be easily removed. And in its place, you can install a new one, acting in the reverse order.
Before replacing an element of interest to us, experts advise to let the engine cool down completely after operation. And after the old thermostat has been dismantled, you should definitely check the new device for serviceability. This is done like this:
- immerse the thermostat in water heated to a temperature of about 80 degrees;
- raise the water temperature by another 10 degrees (while you need to stir the liquid);
- observe the "behavior" of the new device: if you notice that the stem starts to extend from the silicone element, this means that the thermostat is operational.
And do not forget to pour liquid into the cooling system (into the tank) at the end of the work.
On the VAZ 2110, the thermostat plays a key role in the operation of your car's engine. Due to the active corrosive environment that the thermostat is exposed to during operation, and the constant temperature drops, the unit's life is short. Most manufacturers are of the opinion that a thermostat replacement is necessary every two years at least.
Neglecting the need for regular replacement of the thermostatic element inevitably leads to premature engine wear. Replacing a thermostat on a VAZ 2110 family with a six-lane one will cost you some 300 rubles and will require no more than 20 minutes of your personal time. And this, you see, is much more painless than an unforeseen engine overhaul due to the failure of key elements of the cooling system.
Based on the functions that the thermostatic element performs in cars of the VAZ 2110 family, the thermostat should operate in three modes:
- circulation of coolant along a small circuit until the engine reaches the required warm-up temperature (85 degrees Celsius);
- circulation of coolant along a large circuit after the engine reaches the required warm-up temperature (over 100 degrees Celsius);
- intermediate state with partial opening of the main circuit valve in the operating temperature range.
Based on the above, it can be understood that the thermostat at the VAZ is a very simple functional unit, the main breakdowns of which can only be caused by poor production quality, physical wear and tear and corrosion.
Accordingly, the causes of the malfunction can be systematized according to the following type:
- failure or sticking of the main valve plates. In this case, the thermostat will not open;
- Debris trapped in the cooling system causes the valve to fail to close.
Thus, it becomes clear that even a new thermostat, just taken from the counter, can malfunction due to the elementary presence of foreign objects in the cooling system. Therefore, before sinning on the functional unit itself, it is worth checking it, fortunately, this procedure is not very complicated and does not require much effort, it is possible that in your particular case, a replacement is not needed.
The easiest way is to check the unit without taking it out of the hood of the car, and this is done quickly enough and without any problems, just by turning the ignition key. Watch the temperature of the Antifreeze on the instrument panel. Until the coolant temperature reaches 85 degrees. Celsius, the lower radiator hose and the radiator itself will be completely cold.
Thus, you can judge with great confidence that the thermostat operates at the required temperature, as well as that the valve of the main cooling system is reliably closed, as expected, and the cooling radiator does not heat up - no replacement is needed.
How the thermostat works
The valve may not open or may not open fully when the required temperature is reached. In this case, the radiator will either remain completely cold even after the engine reaches operating mode, or it will not heat well, remaining only barely warm.
It is no less easy to check a thermostat removed from a VAZ 2110 car or just bought in a store. Blow firmly into the hole leading from the radiator to the pump. The tightly closed valve will not allow air to pass through.
The actuation of the valve is also checked by immersing the VAZ 2110 thermostat in hot water, heating it to the boiling point. By extending the rod of the silicone element, it is judged on the correctness of its operation. Partial extension of the stem occurs at a temperature of 85 degrees Celsius, and its full extension when the boiling point of water is reached.
Let us describe in detail the procedure for removing and replacing the thermostatic element using the example of a VAZ 2110 injector car:
- 1. Start work only after the motor has completely cooled down. Failure to comply with safety measures dramatically increases the risk of burns;
- 2. Remove the protection of the electric motor, which prevents the convenient drainage of Tosol in the next step;
- 3. Drain the coolant. Remove the expansion tank cap to avoid evacuation. Drain the antifreeze through the drain plug at the bottom of the cooling radiator;
- 4. The thermostat itself on the VAZ 2110 is located under the filter housing, for which, first of all, we remove it:
- the air filter is mounted under the hood on two bolts with a diameter of 8 mm, unscrew them;
- disconnect the sensor on the filter housing;
- having loosened the bandage, remove the filter from the hood of the car.
- 5. Directly the thermostat on the VAZ 2110 is connected to the cooling system by four pipes held by clamps;
- 6. To remove the thermostat from the housing, you need to unscrew the three cover fixing bolts;
- 7.Congratulations, the replacement of the VAZ 2110 thermostat is almost complete, the assembly is performed according to the reverse algorithm. Finally, be sure to fill the system with coolant according to the recommended level on the expansion tank.
It is advisable to consider some elements of the device (see photo). True, the most important ones are inside, you can only see them upon detailed examination after disassembly. But on old cars, the VAZ thermostat is a non-separable unit, therefore, if it fails, it must be completely replaced. This applies to all cars produced before 2003. They used an old, proven design, which began to be used even on the first VAZ-2108 cars.
The thermostat is connected to all units using pipes and clamps. The cooling system has two circuits: large and small. The liquid circulates in a small circle if its temperature is low (up to 87 ° C). After reaching the specified value, it switches to a large circle using a thermostat.
Simply put, the radiator is disconnected from the system when circulating in a small circle, so that the liquid heats up more quickly and the engine temperature reaches its operating value. When the heating is too strong, the radiator turns on, the temperature drops. If the liquid begins to boil, additional cooling is required. For this, an electric fan is provided on the radiator.
The thermostat is based on the properties of a bimetallic plate. She is able to change its shape under the influence of temperature.
A valve with a temperature-sensitive element is installed inside the body. When the operating temperature is reached (about 87 ° C), the valve begins to move slowly, opening the coolant supply. When the liquid warms up to 102 ° C, the thermal valve opens completely. As a result, the liquid begins to circulate in a large circle.
Initially, a thermostat was installed on carburetor engines, which has 4 holes. They call it that - four-hole. All of these holes have a diameter equal to the inner diameter of the nozzle. As a result of this similarity, the pipes fit tightly. But the need to tighten the clamps still does not disappear.
A branch pipe goes from the thermostat to the engine block. Hot liquid is fed through it, which only cooled the jacket of the cylinders. The second is on the radiator, to its bottom. The third is for the stove and pump. The last, the thinnest one - on the expansion tank.
From here, from the hot circuit, the liquid is taken, which heats the throttle valve. The internal structure is similar to the first type of thermostats, based on a valve with a thermosensitive element. The main feature is that the knot is collapsible. In case of failure, only the thermosensitive element can be replaced.
There is nothing difficult to replace.Even a person who is poorly versed in cars can get the job done after having familiarized themselves with the basic steps. If you follow all the recommendations, then you can replace the device in a few minutes. For work you need.
- Silicone sealant.
- Clamps.
- Branch pipes (if the old ones have become unusable and cracked).
- Antifreeze.
- Tank for draining the coolant.
- A set of wrenches and screwdrivers.
Place the vehicle on a level surface and remove the engine protection. When draining the liquid, it will interfere, you will lose a lot of antifreeze. Remember the main rule: do not carry out repairs on a hot engine. The temperature of antifreeze sometimes reaches 100-120 ° C, you can get burned and serious damage to the skin.
Now place the container under the drain hole on the radiator. Open the stove tap just in case. You do not need to drain all the liquid, it is enough to lower its level than the position of the thermostat. The second drain hole is located on the engine block and is unscrewed with a key 13. Replacing the old-style thermostat consists in loosening all the clamps on it and removing them.
When installing a new device, it is advisable to lubricate the outer part, which will be mounted on the pipes, with a sealant. Only first you need to degrease the surface of both the body and the inner cavity of the tubes. Replacing a new thermostat is a little more difficult: there are a little more pipes, you will have to unscrew two nuts from the engine block. Most often, the breakdown lies in the jamming of the thermal valve: it is either constantly open or closed.
Deposits and scale inside the case directly indicate that it is time to clean the system. If there is such a "mess" in it, then in the engine jacket it is even worse. Water with the addition of vinegar will come to your aid to get the job done. If you do not want to use such a solution, you can purchase a special liquid in the store, the composition of which is less aggressive.
A thermostat in a car of any brand is a device that redistributes fluid flows in a car engine. It regulates the temperature regime of antifreeze (antifreeze) to cool the engine system:
Experts call the main function of the automobile thermostat device blocking the flow of cooling antifreeze when it enters the radiator. This is due to the mechanism of operation of the thermostat itself. The fact is that antifreeze does not pass through a cold engine, and when it heats up to a certain temperature, the thermostat is triggered - it opens, and thanks to this, the engine can warm up faster.
The car thermostat does not differ in the complexity of the design, since it consists of several elements:
All these elements are enclosed in a housing on which informational data on temperature conditions are indicated, which correspond to a specific model of a car engine.
- Pull the stem itself out of the cover.
- Drill a 4.5 through hole.
- Cut the female thread to 5.
- Choose a bolt in length with a margin.
- Set the locknut to 5 and a washer with a rubber band to seal.
- Install the fuser back.
- Fill in antifreeze.
- Check in practice, adjust the opening of the large circle to 89 degrees.
Now the temperature will be kept at 90-92 degrees, as stated on the thermostat housing.
Experienced motorists offer another way to modify the VAZ-2110 thermostat device. This method consists in replacing the thermoelement with a low temperature regime with a higher one - from 85 degrees to 92 degrees. To do this, you need to select an analog model of the thermostat (for example, Wahler), from which you get the thermocouple itself and the spring.
So let's get started. The first step is to remove the spring and thermoelement from the analog thermostat, cut the device case and take out the necessary structural parts.
The second step - the spring is ground down to the desired size, so that it fits snugly into the body of the "native" thermostat (it is best to do this on a plane, as a result of which the last turn will become flat and will fit better).
The third step - the "native" thermostat is removed from the engine, for this three screws of the back cover are unscrewed.
The fourth step - a thermoelement at 85 degrees and a spring are taken from the "native" thermostat device.
The fifth step is to replace them with analog parts (an important nuance should be taken into account: the clamping bar must remain "native").
Sixth step - the thermostat is assembled with a new filling and installed on the car's internal combustion engine.
Thanks to this refinement method, the engine temperature will not be lower than 88 degrees. As a result of this refinement, the vehicle owner will receive the following benefits:
- there will be no thermal overheating of the engine;
- fuel consumption will decrease (according to motorists' reviews, up to 1.5 liters);
- the engine runs more smoothly.
Also, a popular way to modify the VAZ-2110 thermostat is to reduce the channel bypass. This channel serves to circulate the coolant. Experts say: the narrower its diameter, the more antifreeze flows through the heater-stove. And, therefore, the interior of the vehicle will be warmer. In order to narrow the bypass channel, you must adhere to the following instructions:
- Prepare a thin aluminum plate of suitable size (a few millimeters thick).
- Make a template for the future workpiece, which will be inserted into the inside of the thermostat.
- Cut a plate out of an aluminum blank according to a template.
- Fix the new part in the thermostat housing using cold welding or using rivets.
- Drill a hole in the fixed plate - 5-6 millimeters in diameter (standard hole size is 8 millimeters).
Those who have already made such a revision note the following feature: it became warmer in the car's interior, but the process of warming up the engine slowed down somewhat.
There is also its own instruction for this:
- An additional 8 mm hole is drilled in the thermostat housing for one more pipe.
- An additional branch pipe is installed (this must be done in parallel to the same "native" branch pipe, which leads directly to the stove).
- A throttle washer is installed for a hole with a diameter of 8 millimeters (it can be used to increase the antifreeze current through the heater when the small circulation circle is open).
Also, we must not forget about the adjusting bolt, which rests against the cover of the thermostat housing. It serves to regulate the temperature when the thermostat device is opened from the outside.
If you do not have the time and desire to modify the "native" five-hole thermostat of your car, then you can purchase a new six-hole thermostat, install it and enjoy all the advantages of this device.

The replacement process is quite simple and if you want to save money on operations, you can do without a service station.
Start work on replacing the thermostat only after the engine has completely cooled down!
There are frequent cases of burns during replacement without observing this safety measure
When purchasing a new thermostat for replacement, it is necessary to check its functionality. The check is carried out by blowing the thermostat union. The working device must not allow air to pass through.
The first VAZ 2110 with carburetor engines were equipped with four-hole one-piece thermostats. The size of the four holes corresponded to the inner diameter of the nozzle. The same dimensions ensured a snug fit of the nozzles.
On the VAZ 2110 modification with an injection engine, a thermostat with 6 holes is installed. The six-line thermostat was first used on the Ten. Subsequently, other VAZ models - Lada Kalina and Lada Priora - began to be equipped with such a thermostat.
The inside of the thermostats is similar in design to the thermocouple on the valve. The main difference is that the six-hole thermostat is a collapsible design. The fuser can be replaced if a problem occurs.

The vehicle must be parked on level ground. The thermostat can only be replaced when the engine is cold! Element replacement is performed in stages.
The structure is assembled in the reverse order. Before starting the engine, it is necessary to fill the system with coolant to the required level.
