The performance of the speed sensor can be checked in several ways. For this, the output electrical characteristics are measured using a portable oscilloscope or multimeter. DS can be dismantled, and the core can be rotated counterclockwise with a screwdriver. The oscilloscope screen should display a square-wave signal with a lower voltage of 1 V, and an upper voltage of at least 5 V. When the wheel is turned by 1 revolution, 6 pulses appear at the output.
In the case when there is a signal, but the speedometer does not work, a possible cause is a breakdown of the sensor drive. If the edges of the shaft are "eaten away", then a complete replacement of the device will have to be done. If, when measuring the output characteristics, the signal did not appear, then this indicates a malfunction of the sensor motor. They can be measured without dismantling the primary device. To do this, you need to jack up the front wheel and, by rotating it, take readings. It is more convenient to carry out such work with an assistant.
If, after replacing the sensor, the speedometer shows a speed that does not correspond to the driving mode, then the reason may lie in the breakdown of the gear wheel of the DS drive. In this case, it is replaced with the gear. When buying a working drive, you need to pay attention to the number of teeth. Failure of the speed sensor is not the only reason for the lack of speedometer readings. Why didn't the speedometer work on your VAZ car?

- X2-2: + 12V for the speedometer;

Connector X2 is colored red, X1 is white. Terminals 8 and 9 in connector X2 are the output and input of the speedometer. The output is connected to the on-board computer.
Both terminals (X1-9 and X2-2) are connected to one wire - orange. This line is protected by a fuse installed in the main mounting block (F19).
First, disconnect the negative terminal of the battery. Then, with a screwdriver, unscrew 4 self-tapping screws (photos 1 and 2) to remove the frame with glass.

Sometimes they do this: they make a tap from terminal 9, and, without turning on the gear, move (push) the car. In this case, the motor remains muted. Pulses will appear on the tap, which can be detected even by a voltmeter. The voltmeter itself must be a pointer.
The presence of pulses indicates a malfunction of the speedometer, and the absence - a sensor malfunction. However, power or ground may not be supplied to the speed sensor (see above).
Repairing a faulty speedometer will not work - it will be easier to replace it. But first you need to find out exactly what the problem was in him.

To make sure that the speedometer breakage is detected correctly, use a new or known working speed sensor. The reason for the breakdown of the speed sensor may be not the tightness of the case and the ingress of moisture and dirt. You can check the performance of the new speed sensor while driving or hanging the front wheels.

In a situation where the speedometer needle begins to move, it should be recognized that the monitoring device is fully operational. This means one thing - the fault lies somewhere in the gearbox. Here, an exclusively experienced car enthusiast or a professional locksmith is able to independently repair the breakdown. When the arrow does not move from a place, it will be enough to replace the sensor itself.
As it is easy to understand, in most cases it is really possible to repair the speedometer on your own. However, in situations where there is no confidence in them, it is better to turn to experts.
